My N4 hasn't had good battery life compared to my GNex and its noticeable. I used Google now on the Gnex and I got like close to 3 hours or more of screen on give or take with the 2000mah extended battery depending on what i was doing with 25% brightness most of the time. But on my N4 with Google now I got like barely 2 hours at like 20% brightness which doesn't' make much sense seeing that the battery in the N4 is larger. So I decided to turn off Google now since I don't really use it and now I get a little over 2 and a half hours sometimes more. I'm guessing that's cause Google now isn't updating and all that cause I turned off all the location services and GPS except the "wifi &mobile network location" for certain apps or widgets and stuff. This is all leading up to my question. How or why maps is at the top of my battery usage and why it says its using GPS when I have it off? It never was at the top before the android OS or screen was there. Now I get better battery life but still the screen isn't the top drainer which is odd. Does anyone have any insight? Cause I can only imagine the battery life I could get out of this if everything worked properly. Cause idk if its a bad code thing or hardware.
And here are pics thanks guy's

Turn off WiFi under location access
But then I wont get any location data for certain apps or widgets. And that was never a problem on th GNex. Is that really the only option i would have?
If you have not done so, signin to navigation at least once.

Ok I did cause i haven't yet and i had to turn on GPS to do so. But now im back out i turned off GPS. What would doing that do exactly? If you dont mind elaborating?
If you never went through that step, some apps that request location will never get it and will keep sending requests draining the battery.

I have signed in but google maps is still my top battery drain even when I haven't used it at all. Anything else that could be causing this?
Could be some widget or app that put location data like any weather widget for example.

Is this a documented fact or something you came up with on your own? I am just wondering because Google Now does not work properly on my phone but it worked great on my Gnex.
Well I guess maps has a bug or its badly coded because like you guys said you still get the battery drain even when you seem to turn location stuff off. Well i did the same I have no Google now activated and it was a little better but id still get maps and it would even say the GPS was on for like hours in it on the GSam battery app So I just decided to force close Maps and since then I have no issue maps isnt even on the GSam radar and my battery life is much better I Can get 3 hours screen time with 15% brightness pretty easy and more if im not doing intensive stuff. Im hoping better code for Jellybeen or maps will come out soon to even make this higher or actually let me use maps and google now without such the drain.
Also I found that when I went to use Maps for directions the GPS getting "stuck" issue would come back so id have to force close to get that to stop and it seems that some apps that use GPS get stuck even though I switch it off like Gas Buddy which looks for gas around your location I tried it and turned on GPS then off when i was done and when i checked GSam it was at the top of my list because the GPS was stuck on and even force closing the app wouldnt shut it off so I had to uninstall and reinstall to stop it. I think it was just that it wasnt coded for 4.1.2 well so hopefully all those bugs will get worked out in the future. Hope this helps someone!
Not documented, but I have personally have 3 n4s map battery drain fixed this way. I heard here on xda, tried, and worked. So there are at least 4 people fixed this way. Of course, this is probably not the only battery bug/optimization issue in 4.2.1.

what they said. this is a huge + for why maps is being used. wished google disabled this from the start so people wouldnt mistaken the phone for having 'poor battery life'
same issue! battery usage as GPS
I'm actually having the same issue (i know this is old)
All my settings are correct, even with force closing the app (GPS and Facebook sometimes) the battery usage will be #1, and the GPS on time under details will be constantly ticking. As I refresh the battery usage, the GPS timer will continue to go up.
Only way I figured to solve this is to reboot my phone.. anyone else experiencing similar issues?
I did! I just noticed this problem in the last 2 days and I found this post.
Does google know about this problem? Will there any patch release for this bug?
I can confirm the same thing with this gps issue.
There's a bug report filed. Vote for it to make it more visible to devs.

Experiencing it both on Google stock 4.3 Galaxy Nexus and Slim Bean 4.3 Nexus 4. Battery stats show GPS running under Google maps after switching GPS off using quick settings tile, after switching off location services in phone settings and even after switching off location in Google settings app. Only reboot stops good usage in battery stats.
This is very annoying. Have anybody fixed it? Any advice appreciated.

You have exactly the same finding of mine (although I may have better punctuation)
The GPS is stuck on even when you killed the map and turn OFF the GPS in the settings already.
And you are right, every app that use the GPS can have this "bug". (I used Yelp a lot and battery status always shows that its GPS usage is on even after I turned off GPS)
In GSAM battery monitor it does not show a high usage though, I guess it does not actually drain battery.
And this issue is still appearing in Android 4.3 with Google map 7.2.0
Google Services Battery Drain
To all of you having Google Services battery drain, I think I found a fix.
With last Google Services update and the last Google Maps update, sometimes it drains almost half of total battery.
I myself have spent the last week trying to see what is happening with this topic, trying to find in every thread or forum across the internet: XDA, HTCMania, AndroidCentral and even Google official forums for this annoying topic. Posted in every forum I could and tried to find an easy way, but for some people, this bug doesn´t exist.
When I write "No Google Services battery drain", I mean that this is not appearing in the battery graph.
I made a clean install of my ROM with no sync from Google, so I could see what´s the source of such battery drain. I started to disabled the "Location Access" at Settings.
I started to install only Google Search and use device a couple of hours with it. Google Search/Google Now ask for the Google Services, so I installed and used it. The Google Settings app(the one with the green icon) had disabled the "Location History" and "Reporting Location". No Google Services battery drain.
I enabled the last two to see if this could be the culprit of the battery drain and used device for a couple of hours more. No Google Services battery drain.
Then I installed Google Maps and just enabled GPS in "Location Access" and used the device again. No Google Services battery drain.
After that, I enabled "Wi-Fi & Mobile Network Location" on "Location Access" and then... Voilà!. Google Services started to appear in the battery graph.
I discovered that the drain come specifically from this option in Location settings: Settings > Location Access > Wi-Fi & Mobile Network Location.
I left GPS Satellites checked and even with that, no more Google Services drain. All the drain come from the other option, and is more noticeable when you are connected to WiFi.
No need to disable other Location services nor other settings about locations, just leave that option unchecked and Google Services won´t even appear in the battery graph.
I have been running my device with all Locations settings enabled except the "Wi-Fi & Mobile Network Location" and Google Services is not even show on battery graph.
Hope it helps.

UPDATES
Aug 01, 2013 - I tried to install new Google Play Store and new Google Services framework and still is the same.
Aug 07, 2013 - Updated Google Services Framework to 3.2.25(Although Play Store says 3.0.25 is the last one) to test if enabling WiFi location has impact on battery. Reporting Location and Location History are disabled for this test.
Aug 08, 2013 - The battery drain has decreased a lot with latest update, it is now just 5% of total battery life until now(22hrs since charged). I ´m going to leave battery discharges and then make a new battery cycle with Reporting Location and Location History enabled to see if the problem is totally gone about location battery drains.
Aug 09, 2013 - It´s been 5 hours since I unplugged phone from charger, I have Google Services at 10% of my battery and my Screen with 30 mins. At first, Google Services drain showed 20% on the battery graph for the first hour I think, and then it seems to decrease and stay normal again. I will post tomorrow the final results. Remember that for this test I´m having enabled all the possibly Location settings on phone(both Google Now settings and Location Access settings).
Aug 10, 2013 - The first battery cycle was ok, with all the Location settings enabled both in Settings and in Google Now, gave me a total of 8% battery drain in a full day, most of the time in 3G and not in WiFi like the other tests I did. It seems that new update of Google Play Services helped a lot with this drains, because the drain of Google Services is still below of the System itself. I will report later when the battery life improve, because first cycles are always bad in terms of battery life.
Aug 12, 2013 - It seems that the battery drain problem is fixed with last update. I made 2-3 battery cycles and the drain at the end is the same, around 7%-10%, something that looks normal and below when comparing to the "Phone Idle" or "Android System" battery drain. Of course you can disable the Location options, specially the WiFi Location option to make the Google Services battery drain be lower, but people is reporting Google Now and other apps not working properly. Maybe is the way that Android 4.3 works now. Still the battery is still improved from Android 4.2.2, so I´m quite happy right now with the tests and the results.
Aug 13, 2013 - Here are the results for the tests. I maybe should call these results the final ones, until something else happens. The screenshots are pretty self explanatory. The first one is about the battery drain over night, and the other two about the battery life at the end of the day.
Aug 21, 2013 - I made a full wipe and clean installation of PA 3.97 to test if drain could be also ROM sided fro any reason, but the news is that with a clean installation and latest updates for every Google product, the drain is the same fro Google Services(around 5%-8%). For all the previous test I was using pure AOSP build.
Sep 09, 2013 - Some users reported that latest updates are making the problem reappear, so I link the post with the latest free drain version of Google Now: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45332135&postcount=161.
Sep 13, 2013 - I have installed PSX ROM with PSX GAPPS(based on BaNkS) and the Google Services drain is the same, around 5%-8% after a normal usage day. I don't report any problem.
Sep 20, 2013 - I have flashed Purity ROM and Purified Kernel and the Google Services drain is a little bit higher, around 10%, but still have good battery and performance.
Sep 24, 2013 - The opportunity now is for PSX v7 with default kernel(SiMa). Google Services drain is behaving normally, around 10%. It seems that the last update from September increased a little the Google Services wakelock. Still is performing well and it is a decent drain.
Sep 30, 2013 - Added some useful information and solution from user 511pf: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=46054200&postcount=227
Oct 24, 2013 - I flashed PSX 8.2 with default kernel, a very battery friendly and balanced kernel. Google Services drain is good, around 8%.
Oct 30, 2013 - I make a clean install of PSX 8.5 with new kernel and Google Services still are around 8%. No major problems with them.
Nov 12, 2013 - I came back to stock to wait for the Android 4.4 update, and the Google Services remain the same: around 7%. No major issues presented and battery drain over night is around 5% for 9 hours.
FINAL UPDATE: Nov 23, 2013 - I flashed stock image for Android 4.4 and Play Services drain reappeared. The problem is, after some researching, that KitKat has "modes" for location settings. There are 3 modes: high precision, battery friendly and device only. The first two drain battery as hell, but the third one makes the Play Services drain completely gone. With this in mind, widgets and Google Now are still fully functional, just Near Places is not available as well as some apps that need location, because it will work with just the GPS. My battery has greatly increased after I made this change.
I won't be continuing with this thread because I already sold my Nexus 4 and I got a Nexus 5, so I'm moving on. I will ask a moderator if it possible to make this thread a sticky thread so it will continue to be available to all the Nexus 4 users.

Yesterday I did a full wipe of my phone(even sdcard) and restored everything from scratch to stock 4.2.2 image, and then update came to 4.3 few minutes later.
As far as I know, the problem still persists because in the time I was making wizard and setting up all the options for every app I have, I was seeing battery drain with the WiFi Location option enabled and when I finished setting up all, the Google Services drain was about 20% in a time of 2 hours.
I disabled the option, and currently I don´t have this drain again, but it is just the first day, so I will enable it today and will report tonight with results.
It is 9:00AM exactly now, I´m enabling the option now.

These are the results, the drain is still there although it is not much in 4.3. I have say to say that battery improvement is huge in this new version, so maybe this could matters directly with the drain.
I think still that is better to uncheck that option is not needed, so 10% of your battery or more won't be affected by this wakelock.

Guys I am facing such extremely annoying Google Services (DownloadManager in BBS) battery drain + mobile/wifi data usage issue and I have been searching for some hours.
First of all I have tried the most answered solution - clearing the data of all those stuffs related to Google Services - well it did not work so well.
Then I don't think freezing download manager / factory reset / restrict background data / disabling google services framework are good solutions as I myself did not make changes related to this recently so a factory reset should not be needed, plus the other mentioned solutions would cause syncing issues with Google and this doesn't suit my lifestyle of heavily depending on various google services.
Many of you have proposed that the massive download / repeated downloads are related to downloading the 4.3 OTA and that might be possible according to the similar file sizes as well as logcats you have found. But on the other hand one of the solution - disabling Network Locations settings has also stopped the "download" triangle from constantly staying there when my wifi is on. Therefore we can conclude that it is partially related to the 4.3 OTA download which cannot be disabled on our custom ROMs, as well as partially about the stock Network Location settings.
Fortunately after many posts that do not provide a feasible answer I have found this xda post which addresses the issue related to the Google Play Store 4.1.6. Some of the users have reported that 4.1.10 has fixed the issue and some even said the newest version 4.2.9 is over the internet since 25/7 together with 4.3 update.
Not sure why such critical update did not roll out to the unluckily bunch of us from Google, but I have found the Android Police source about 4.1.10 fixing the "Network Location bug which hogs the battery" and hopefully this will stop the DownloadManager wakelock as well as the crazy battery drain + data drain by Google Services.
I haven't tested this thoroughly because I will probably need a day to check out whether it stops the crazy behaviour but I would just like to share with you guys my founding as soon as possible so you guys can try it out together with me. The latest Google Play Store 4.2.9 apk can be downloaded from Android Police here.
Hope I have helped! Good luck to you and me!

Don't lose your time with that article. Drain happened to me with Google Play Store 4.1.10 and also with Google Play Store 4.2.9. I was a completely week trying to install every Play Store I could and never worked.
Indeed most of test were made with 4.2.9, and the only way I could stop Google Services to appear in the battery graph was unchecking the option I mentioned before. At least for me, this is the only thing it worked to stop this.

Google Now won´t stop working, because it still has access to location, but not being pushing and receiving data all the time, what makes the wakelock and the battery drain.
I have only that option unchecked and still having functional Google Now, but just to note that there will be a warning saying that locations settings are not optimized or something like that. Also in Google Maps happens the same, but still we have the GPS if app uses any location.

Well, for me, it asked me to enable location settings in order to use maps and Google now (I don't use GPS cause it doesn't work indoors here...we have houses and buildings made of concrete).

About the GPS, you are right in the part that GPS won't easily lock indoors, but this is maybe the price we have to pay to have a really good battery. Remember that this is just a work-around to this bug, not a fix. Google is the one who should make a fix in future releases for this insane battery drain.
With 4.3, I'm able to obtain a full day without a charge leaving all the location settings enabled, but although Google Services drain is around 15%, it constantly keeps the device active and consume battery .
You should consider enabling the Wifi Location option just when you need it, because is what I do. I barely use the location settings for anything, but when I need it for any app, I just enable the option, make what I have to do, and then disabled it to keep battery.
Below I share my battery stats with the tip I just wrote.

I´m testing right now the new version and see if there is any change about the drain to make the feedback.
One weird thing I noticed is this link is showing 3.0.25 as the latest, but I have on my phone 3.2.25 installed.

It seems that new Google Services update helped a lot with the drain. Right now, the drain is only 5% with 22 hours of battery life.
So, I'm rooted on VZW with no OTA and suddenly had abnormal battery drain today. Any idea why this may be happening?
Mine is kinda high today as well. I saw something about Google having issues today with email and other applications. This could be related, or phones can't connect to Google so it just keeps on trying.
Sounds nice but don't know if it's true or not.

Install Greenify. Hibernate all the APPs that you don't want notification from first. This app doesn't allow APPs to Wakelock you're phone. Once you find which offending account is the issue you'll be ok. I found that Facebook woke up my phone thousands of times and I have up notifications. Best choice ever ?
This app requires root and free in the app store.

Greenify can't touch system apps to my knowledge but yes, it is an excellent solution for rogue apps that take up resources when they shouldn't. :good:
As far as the google services battery drain, I eliminated that by simply turning off google location services. The actual GPS is so quick to lock that I haven't run into a scenario yet where I'd absolutely need to turn it back on.
My location services are off. Doesnt seem to help me much. I also bought donation greenify and greenfied Google Play services and Google Play Store

How is that working? Considering doing the same as I've already tried removing the sytem app and replacing with Play Services from the play store. That seemed to work for a few days but the nip wake locks are worse than ever right now. Killing the otherwise stellar battery.

works great today..... google services error has gone away today and my battery life seems longer. :good:
I just froze google play services and will look at the battery stats later to report the difference. What apps are affected by freezing this though? It seems Hangouts is one.
I don't know why, but all my days are pretty much exactly the same location-wise and some days have huge wakelocks, others don't.
Aside from installing the play store services which seemed to help quite a bit, I've also noticed a nice drop in wakelocks since I went on to Google's Location History dashboard (https://maps.google.com/locationhistory/b/0/dashboard?hl=en) and deleted all my history so maybe it could re-create it.
One thing I've noticed is that on high-wakelock days, my GPS is going nutso. My point markers on that dashboard will have me moving ALL OVER the place, even while I'm just sitting at my desk at work.
This leads me to the conclusion that signal plays a huge role, and I do have bad signal at work (1 bar, and can't get a good GPS lock at my desk).
Also, you can minimize these wakelocks without the use of Greenify by simply turning off Location Reporting and Location Using WiFi and Mobile Networks. This dropped my wakelocks to pretty much 0, immediately. But you'll lose things like weather widget geolocation and some Google Now features. On the other hand, this is a more viable option than freezing services which can cause you to lose push notifications for GMail among other things.
I've been messing with this throughout the day today and the problem is high NIP wakelocks originating from Google Services...specifically the Network Location process. So the fix for me appears to be disabling newtork location while leaving GPS location enabled. This is usally the reverse of how I do things but for this phone, it may be the better solution. Google Now is still working for me, as is maps/navigation. There may be some casualties of disabling newtwork location but I haven't run across them yet. I've always viewed these two options as coarse (network) vs.fine (gps) location. So I'm hoping GPS picks up the slack and I don't lose any functionality. What I could see happening is that it just takes longer for location to be confirmed because network location is faster. I'll take that in lieu of battery drain however.
Still need to run like this for a couple days to see how things go but I was getting hundreds and even thousands of NIP wakelocks in a run cycle prior to disabling network location. I'm now getting zero.

I believe disabling network location will disable Google Now location cards, such as weather or places.

You are correct, there's the first casualty confirmed. I'm going to run like this for a few days and see what gives. I don't use the cards anyway so no issue there. If anyone knows of other functionality loss, please speak up.
Like some of you have said, I don't rely on Google Now cards, and I don't leave the city I'm in, so for things like weather, I am find with the hourly syncing of my weather app. If I do need GPS/location services, it's not hard to toggle and battery life is incredible. I feel it was just something going rogue the other day. Today, with locaiton off, I've been off the charger for 15:34 with 1:24 screen on time and I'm at 58%. I spent a good portion of today in a sub-basement on airplane mode, with wifi active in the background though. Walking around campus, I used Songza via 4G due to some wifi weak spots. I can't be happier with this phone, as my GNex would have long since been dead, even on airplane mode.
EDIT: Holy ****, 15:34 sounded familiar, checked my post from yesterday, I responded then at the same time off the charger...
Okay so I may have fixed it on my phone.
I forced closed "Google Play Services" and "Google Devices Framework" then rebooted.
Google services was using it 50% of battery consistently through the day and now its down to using 2% of battery. I'll come back at the end of the day with battery stats.

this night was a pain.... the phone was on 83 and when i wake it was on 76..... google services was draining all my battery, who could fix this?
Ok so my phone would die after around 5-6 hours of doing nothing, I found by going to device administrators and disabling "android device manager" and then going to settings > apps > all > Google play services. You are now able to force stop the app. After doing this I have now have no battery drain and this don't seem to cause any other issues

So the battery drain problem is on Google side instead of SONY?

Former it was just Google play services that seemed to be doing some all the time, so unless it's just mine, it seems to be google

I believe that you did not fully understand what the OP has stated in his first post. I think he might be on to something. I'm going to test it on my phone and (if I don't forget) I will report back. Turning off location for ADM would actually be a better solution for me than turning off location as a whole.
ok, and what I do at all is Setting > Locations > Google Location Reporting > TURN OFF Location reporting , TURN OFF Location history .
and the problem just fixed ..

Toggling 'Location reporting' also toggles location reporting to Google Device Manager I guess.
For me disabling google services helped
On xperia z disabling network and wifi location, location history, some other stuff and some google services increased the battery life significantly. See pics.

this!!! Sony broke our phones with latest update.
It didn't occur before, it must be sony, not google. Otherwise every phone in the world would have this problem.

I am beginning to think the same thing. I have a friend who has a Nexus 5 and never had this issue with any of the KitKat versions.

Don't you remember the last time you said this and people linked you to various examples of other devices suffering battery drain because of Google Play Services? Or do you just like finding reasons to complain about Sony?
I suggest that you'll be better off posting complaints (valid or not) or suggestions in the Sony support forum for the Xperia Z in future, where someone from Sony will actually see it.

There are many, many more examples if you just do a quick Google search. It isn't the best situation, but it is not Sony's fault.

It's just the powered cradle for the motorbike. Had few rides and in between used for 50 min google maps in a car without charging.
For me the problem would always creep back after a few days of use.
The way I fixed it was to disable location reporting, ads and automatic backup. I then rebooted into recovery and wiped Dalvik and Cache.
Now it's been over a week and Google Play Services doesn't even appear in the top list of battery usage anymore.
Hope this helps.

I just noticed the manage space button under play services where you can force stop it. Is this a kitkat feature? I never had access to it before. It actually crashed on me after I,cleared the cache the first time.. Weird
I have a few questions (sorry if they're unrelated):
1. If I disable location reporting, will google's android device manager be able to locate my phone?
2. If GPS is disabled in the action bar, are apps still able to use location reporting? If so, do they use wifi triangulation or do they turn on gps temporarily?

You are wrong, as it happens on other phones sometimes (very rare issue) when it is in all Sony phones updated to 4.4.2

It's not necessarily on EVERYONE's phones. I didn't have this before and when GPlay Services updated I did. So no, it's not Sony's fault. Some people just don't understand that Sony does not have control over Google Play Services and what it does.
I also have access to both a Z1 and a Z2, both of which are running 4.4.2 and just disproves your claim even more.
This is what I'm getting now since it updated just after Google i/o. I don't even know how to stop it. My battery has gone from 1+ days of usage to just about 16 hours with no other change. No new apps nothing. And these screenshots were taken after a reboot so I would imagine I'd have well over 1000 wakelocks from this thing. What's more look at the time stamps on the second and third images. Taken 7 minutes apart but I have 21 wakelocks in that short space of time.
Compare that to the wakelock crazy Facebook with only 11 in that same space of time. I don't even know what to do about this. Has never been this bad in my 2 months of owning the phone.
Any advice or recommendations to fix this? It's driving me crazy.
Also:
No I have no new apps.
No I didn't flash anything else.
My kernel was the same this entire time.
The phone gets mad hot for no reason.
Tried wakelock terminator on it but it only made it not want enter deep sleep all together.

If you have a look around the forum and the internet, you'll notice every device from every brand has this issue. Sony has it worse, they dont even last 7 hours.
Turn off Google data backup, opt out of personalized apps and turn off location services.
You could always just disable Gplay services for now. I'm not rooted and I've done it.
