[Q] 4.3 roms and TWRP issue - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I posted this question on another forum and apparently there is a fix for this issue either posted here on XDA or droidrzr.com. I have searched both extensively and cannot find it.
Here is what is happening.
I upgraded TWRP to 2.6 a while ago, I have made several back ups since then. I even made a back up of a 4.3 rom with no issue. Recently however when I back up a rom it takes about 6GB of space and says it is splitting data into several archives which takes forever. If someone can help I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you.

CWM + ROOT

This guide is no more. Due to the fact that seedrom193 had a guide made before this but with missing file issue, I did this one
to provide an easy way with more than one option.
seedrom193 fixed his guide now so I deleted this as I promised.
I leave the thread still existing for now. There might be some usefull info for someone to find.
Thank you.

Oh, sorry. I looked over a few of those root guides and some of them had missing links and one wasn't totaly complete I think, so I just thought
I'll do a quick guide on how to get everything in five mins.
I think it was yours who had missing files.
Get yours fixed and I'll delete this :good: No problems bro.

First file still missing, and supersu wont be seen in app-drawer unless you download it from play as well.
Every app who wants su will just hang unless you do that because you cant grant or deny access.
I made total unroot today to figure this out, and that was what I came up with. Everything else failed.
About pictures - You can upload them directly to xda. No need to use another host.

I'm not sure if I did something wrong but when I rebooted the phone in 'download mode' it's stuck, saying "Downloading... Do not turn off target!!". What do I do now? I tried running Odin3 but it just said successful but I'm not sure if anything happened.
Update: I noticed that Odin doesn't recognize my drive so I guess it's just stuck in that 'download mode' and I think I know why. I read that the IMEI needs to be recognized and while this was probably not a smart move I followed this guide to root the phone before I put in my SIM card because I have to break it loose and after that I can't use it in my old phone. Question is, what the hell do I do now? Since it says I can't reboot it and I can't use Odin it's a bit of a dilemma.
Update 2: Nevermind, I had forgotten to update USB drivers and then reboot. Question, is it possible to continue without TriangleAway? They warned about potential bricking the phone and I'm not planning on flashing any ROMs at the moment.

Make sure to go to google playstore and download SuperSU and update it, afterwards just download Triangle Away and use it. I rooted my phone 2 days ago and everything is perfect.

Yes but I don't want the risk of bricking the phone. Assuming I don't get a power outage during activation with TriangleAway there's minimal chance that something gets screwed up?

No, it's not needed then but are you sure? Did you flash firmware or recovery?
On this phone you don't get a triangle on boot, but it's seen only in download mode.

I flashed it with CWM then rooted according to the guide, I don't think I know the difference between firmware or recovery.
Anyway, I haven't booted into download mode again to see as last time I could restart the phone so what do I need to do once I'm there to reboot again to normal mode in case I only want to see if the triangle is there?

First thing first. Just go get the stock image here:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#occamjwr66y
Then run flashall. That will get you back to a working device.
At that point you can go break it again.
I would suggest using efrant's guide on returning to stock. It may seem a little complicated for first time users, but once you get the hang of it you will understand it very easily. Also his guide is much safer than any toolkit

Most of the toolkits are perfectly safe and easy of used correctly. I can't see any reason a beginner should try to do this manually.

Have you backed up all of your SD card data?
To sort out this X logo loop..Try going to the recovery & do a factory reset. If it doesn't work then just lock & then unlock your bootloader..You will get your Rom Booted just fine

Wifi won't work after trying to root. Help!

So I posted a thread here asking for help (the phone was functional at this point) and one user suggested a root method to try out in the comments there http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2379833
After running this root method my wifi is now dead. It's killing me! Someone please help me out here.
My phone model is a Japanese Softbank 201 M with the 4.1.2 update. It's not rooted but is unlocked. The phone is the developer edition if that helps any.

Ouch. Your WiFi is broken because he told you to flash a US VZW (XT-907) firmware.
Okay. First, you should try to find a 201M restore file. That will get your WiFi back. Next, since you've got a Dev edition, you can bootloader unlock and install a custom recovery, then flash a root zip
EDIT: Found it

While the link I gave him was unidentified as to warnings to non vzw users (now fixed) , the flashing of vzw sw comes in step 8 clearly he would have had to have pulled it from a xml himself if he even got that far. And if he did it would have been from reading the rzr op. As the bare motochopper has no vzw sw inside.

I didn't get the system img at all. I just wanted to flash the superuser files to /data which I thought would set me up to flash the whole thing with Rom manager.
Anyway, thank you for the help. I am downloading the firmware you linked to now. This guide tells me to edit the XML file and remove the getvar text from it, should this apply here as well? (Edit: Cant post outside links, but I think you get my point)
I'm going to use RSD 6.1.4 to restore the firmware. Any further instructions would be appreciated as I have never done this before.

I think I'm gonna give up on the idea of rooting this thing until there's a more reliable method available. Also, if anyone has the same issue then take note: I did remove the getvar commands when using RSD.

I am glad SC took care of you & I am sorry I lead you in that direction.
Please fill in some details for others?
How do you have a path to the newer sw? Is it your carriers ota? If you can obtain the same in the xml form there is an easy root using a modded ver w/ unlocked phone. The ota.zip could also be useful if you take it while you have root. It resides in /cache.
Thank you

It wasn't your fault for trying to help, so it's ok. I'm glad a solution existed.
I'm more than willing to answer the questions, but I am a layman here so please explain some things for me: What do you mean by SW? I just installed the update by going into about phone -> system update on Wifi. The carriers here don't even support 3G, much less 4G (So now you know why Wifi was important for me).
The phone came unlocked day one when I bought it from a friend's friend. I don't know if he did it that way or if it comes unlocked because it is the developer edition.
I installed CW Recovery using Fastboot. I installed the incorrect superuser file using Motofail which wrote the superuser file but failed at all other steps. I was then unable to either access or remove this superuser apk file.
Since I am back on 4.0.4. now, what's the easy way to get root access and superuser permissions that you mention? I wish other XT902 owners would post here too, generating interest would really help in getting development support for this phone.

Once you root on 404 you can grab your update.zip & copy it to your sd . Any rooting exploit would evolve from that Or the newest xml ver of the 404 you just flashed from rsd. You may be able to request it from your carrier.
---------- Post added at 01:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:40 PM ----------
You can paste the mods from my vzw restore (no vzw software will be used) into the 404 xml & obtain root from a preinstalled cwmr! Then maintain root with voodoo for your ota.
I will help you just read the op. Link is in my signature.

Odin Download mode...

So as you can see I finally figured out how to get out of the scary Download Mode screen on my gs4. Well I need some help trying to get my recovery back to normal. I tried to install TWRP with Goomanager and it didn't do it correctly or maybe its just me. So after TWRP downloaded I went to go install it and it put me in DL mode. I panicked and thought I bricked my phone and I did power button+volume down+home button and it restarted and booted up Android. Now when I try and go into recovery it throws me back into Download mode and I have to do that button sequence to get out. Its almost like I deleted my recovery so Idk what to do... :'( if anyone can try and help it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!!

I don't think your suppose to get TWRP from Goomanager it has to have "Loki"or something like that if not mistaken. Hate to say this my Friend as of now you are without a recovery and there's no way to get that since there isn't any Odin for MF3 Only thing i
can tell you is go to Bestbuy they can recover your Rom back to the stock way it was lot's had this happen to them and they got it fix for free in Bestbuy, Cause
since MF3 Bootloader is locked there's no way to get your Recovery back!
The button sequence is not what's rebooting you out of download. Just holding the power for 10-15 secs does that. When the phone is off press and hold VOL+HOME and press and hold POWER till first splash screen. ( mine is the custom screen). Then release POWER only. Holding VOL+HOME till you see the first TWRP logo. You don't have to really hold it that long. Ussually just till the small blue writing in top left corner pops up. Works better for me to hold till the blue TWRP logo. Then release both buttons. Should take 5-8 secs then TWRP options screen will be up. If you are ever in download mode and you are not flashing with Odin or installing or really doing anything besides thinking "damnit I wanted recovery not ODIN". Then hold power till it shuts down and then start recovery boot sequence. Or hell just pull the battery. Want hurt as long as no installing , flashing, or upgrading or nose picking is going on.

Excellent I cannot thank you enough for making me feel a lot better. I feel better knowing Samsung is so cool about that unlike most companies.

Excellent I sure will read up on this stuff and I guess just tell Samsung what happened and see what they can do. I appreciate all of your help. I feel so much better.
Also one other thing since you obviously know so much. What happens if at&t pushes their update out automatically like I hear they are doing and my phone is rooted. Will it break my phone?? Thx

Since you already got bootloader Locked with Firmware MF3 If
Bestbuy flashes you back to Stock with Everything working they will Flash MF3
back so by the 2 links i provided once you know how to do this come back and
ask cause you can freeze apps with Titanium Backup there's a few apps that
can be frozen so no AT&T Upgrade can be pushed once they are frozen plus
once you flash a custom rom AT&T Can't push a Upgrade on Custom Roms but i
can't Remember which those apps are just get your phone fixed and start
reading more you will find the answers with the search as well in XDA Good Luck!

Great until I make my way over to bestbuy I will freeze at&t DM server with titanium just in case the update gets launched and I am not messing with any of this anymore after my phone gets restored lol. I'm only going to root because that's safer thank installing a custom ROM Haha.

Tell Them Something Like this guy Did!

SO i was a fooled and i tried to flash my MF3 S4 with TRWP. Make a long story short my phone was soft bricked. I was unable to go into recovery mode, only Odin mode. So after reading a bunch of posts and thinking that my phone was bricked until samsung released official MF3 recovery image , i gave up. My friend at best buy called me and said that they now have "Samsung Experience Centers and they can Flash your phone to factory stock. I called Samsung and verified. i immediately brought the phone over and after explaining that "Kies" Ruined my phone they were able to flash my phone now it is working. I will go into more detail soon. But those who were in my situation, rest assured there is a solution now.

Should I just tell them that I tried to update to mf3 via keys and it failed and I didn't realize until I tried to access recovery mode and it didn't come up only Odin mode? Lol I'm trying to make this sound like its not a ridiculous story.

Can't you guys run whatever you basically want on sprint kernels? Usc and sprint are so close its sick...i used to have luck with sprint stuff all the time when i had tmo...
Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk
I think you would have to do some editing and deleting but ya... I have usc and i can run most thing that is on the note 5 sprint... The only problem i had was. i cant seem to send picture messaging form sprint roms... I did get it to work one time but it was by luck.....im working on porting ux but i cant seem to get past this data issue that everybody is having problems with...im running out of time becasue the note 7 will be here soon.
i have tried a couple Sprint ones, and it gives me a reboot issue...sometimes it will make it 5 seconds, then reboot, other times it makes it 10 seconds'
I would recommend also rooting your stock usc kernel then backing up the rooted boot.img and reflashing it then latest supersu zip after installing any sprint rom...that way BL,CP, and kernel all match up and the rom is the only difference...

Unless there's r4 variant kernels available, but i don't personally know any devs building for them...

I have a twrp backup on my phone, i made AFTER i did the rooting, and SU...what way would you recommend extracting and reflashing from it?
im wondering if i can pull out MY boot.img and add it to a sprint rom before i flash it...hmm
Just flash the actual img file in twrp

From a twrp backup I'd use nandroid manager (from playstore) and it'll allow you to pull whatever you want from a twrp backup...
Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk
NOPE..the answer it seems was much easier... I went in with twrp and made a backup of just my boot.img and my modem, and after i flashed the rom, before rebooting, i flashed that backup...seems to be working...ill let you all know
still no luck..trying again with just the boot.img

When twrp does a backup, i chose JUST boot.. Then i flashed MOAR and waited for it to boot.. got past the wifi setup to where it says it is seeting up phone for first time use.. this is where i always had problems.. so i waited there until it did a reboot, then button combo into recovery and then restored, using the backup with JUST the boot.img....and....
worked!!!!!!

Yup exactly! You can definitely do it like that, or you can extract the boot.img and flash that alone, either way...and if during this you ever boot loop at Sammy screenthen flash supersu zip nicely done!

I can send you an edit ver of Moar 4.1 that works with usc ..just flash alway. 4g and everything works. If you are into pic message. Just download Google messaging . It should work just an FYI battery drain a lot.. working on it but very nice rom and I take no credit for this becasue I did not build this..

was trying MOAR Toasted..i got it to boot and got thru setup, but no matter what i did, NO signal.. I also live in an area where theres NO sprint signal, but USC works perfect everywhere...weird huh? Please send me the link, would be a huge thanks on my end
i think i found the issue!!! I backed up my modem and efs in twrp... Flashed the rom, and after, flashed a kernel i know works with the R4, and then went and restored my modem and efs...then, first boot...fired up with signal!!
