Why does my AT&T Galaxy s4 drops LTE when in calls? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I just got a Galaxy s4 and I've noticed that LTE drops when I'm speaking to someone and when I'm finished speaking it comes back. Is this normal or do I have something in the settings? My Galaxy s3 didn't do that...

During calls, I'm assuming you drop down to 4G/HSPA or 3G? That is normal. LTE goes away because voice calls don't run over VoLTE (Voice over LTE) yet. I don't think you noticed it with your Galaxy S3, but it probably dropped LTE as well. Don't worry about it though; I was worried about it at first too. That isn't a problem with your device.

You are correct in a way. The LTE is your data (for now) you will notice a drop in data speed when your on a call and surfing the web at the same time but yes it is normal chances are you won't be doing both at the same time a lot so you won't have anything to worry about.

Can anybody else's use data and voice simotaneously

Would help if you mentioned carrier. I am assuming you're referring to Verizon LTE as ATT and T-Mobile support this since they are GSM.

I know on Verizon this is only possible when on LTE. On 3G it's still impossible due to the nature of CDMA.
Yeah know that. But it's still working on 3g in Memphis Tn.

Works on my htc rezound on lte and i'm fairly certain it's the only phone save the thunderbolt that can also do it on cdma.
EDIT: Yup, works like a champ!
On SIII on vzw 3g also works when on calls

Read somewhere that this was possible due to the dual radios in the phone...
And I just tried it... and it worked, so yes, it can do voice and data simultaneously!
data and calls work on sprint simultaneously 3g and LTE (in theory LTE anyway)

Both rezound and thunderbolt can do data and voice over 3G cdma as they both have dual 3G radios.
I didn't think the GSIII could though. Am I reading right that people with sprint and this phone can?
That'd be nice if the Verizon version can. One thing I love about my rezound.

it's not actually a limitation of cdma, it's a limitation of Verizon, and i actually believe it's an artificial limitation, likely to "protect their network and users", as they like to claim for everything....
i have done it a few times on my Sprint gs3, on 3g, since I'm stuck without lte in my city right now.

This works on my sprint sg3 and it works on the evo lte... Which one of my main reasons for upgrading to a new phone. This s due to the separation of the radios that prevented this before.

As in, be on a phone call and browse the net at the same time? Yep....but I've been able to do that since my Atrix 2....dont remember if my x10 could.

I was just doing some WiFi tethering and I received a phone call... Noticed I was still getting emails. My first thought was that my laptop automatically reconnected to my work's wireless connection. NOPE! I verified again with an outbound call... Data works on the phone and over tether DURING the phone call. Supposedly this was going to be a feature of EVDO Rev. A, but Sprint had not initiated it yet. This is freaking fantastic. I guess our phones started using 3G for voice
Sprint SGSIII blue
Sprint enabled this under their network as part of Sprint Vision. It is basically an advanced 1X data network that allows data while on phone calls. Only the newer phones with certain frequencies support it. Doesn't force us to use 4G or Wi-Fi if we want data and phone calls together. IPhones do not support this unless you're on a GSM network which Sprint isn't. Sprint is CDMA like Verizon.

I noticed this during a call yesterday and I was pleasantly surprised. When I was reading about this earlier, I thought it would be a feature supported only by towers that had eHRPD support but this is pretty awesome in itself.

It is possible with the Thunderbolt, and Rezound on Verizon. It also works with GSIII. I was a little torn about getting this phone since I figured I would lose this functionality but was pleasantly surprised when I did a test for s & g's.

So no SVDO on Sprint S4 :/

Hi, about a week ago I finally upgraded to the S4 from the S3. And so far, I absolutely love the phone! Only let down, no SVDO (which is dual CDMA radios allowing for simultaneous phone calls and data for those of you who don't know). Because that was one of the features I loved about the S3 and I utilized often. Especially during boring phone calls and/or being put on hold for while. It would allow for me to surf the web, or go on FB while being on a call.
But rumor has it that they decided to forgo SVDO because Sprint was well on their way in deploying LTE, and simultaneous LTE/Voice is possible.
I don't currently live in an LTE area. Can anyone in an LTE area confirm if this is true??
Thx.
Yes it works with LTE as the LTE and call use two different radios. Thus letting us use voice and data at the same time. Works while on WiFi too. Only 3g it doesnt.

Yes it only works on WiFi and lte for Sprint. All though other carriers that actually have good networks and even t-mobile can do it. Just one more thing Sprint's network lacks.

Nope. You need LTE or Wifi. The S3 will probably be the last phone to carry SVDO

[Q] Signal - S3 vs S5

I know that there is this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2713214 but they don't seem to answer the question based on an S3, so I'm curious for those of you that swtiched from the S3 to the S5, did you notice any better signal everywhere you use it?
the reason for my question is this: I'm looking to upgrade from the S3, but I want a phone that I'm going to get a better signal with. I like Samsung, but am up to considering other android phones if one is specifically better with signal than the S5.
So, again, coming from the S3 to the S5, did you notice any better signal for calls/text/data?
Thanks

No 32GB option, so I stuck with my S4. Hopefully the S5 prime has a 32GB version.
I had also been considering the HTC One M8, but from what I've been reading, the radios in that device are worse than the samsung ones. I wonder if this is beginning to be a trend... Of course, there's also the draw of S-Off and root on that device. Ultimately, it comes down to this - my S3 had absolutely no signal where 3 of my buddies' iPhones had signal as did my brother's Moto X. It was very frustrating, so I want to make sure that my next phone has better signal.

I just got my S5 and I'm dropping calls where I never did with my S3. VZW thinks it could be a device issue and are waiting for my word to ship me a new replacement. I'll keep testing today and update this thread and also if I end up replacing it after receiving a new one.
I've noticed a great improvement in regards to signal on the gs5. It even seems to be a tad better than my Note 3 as far as keeping lte. I'm in a rural area too by the way.

I noticed no difference in signal strength between my S3 and S5, both are great. Although the S5 does get access to the much faster AWS LTE.

Can't speak to the S3 --> S5 changes, but I went from an S4 --> S5 and noticed HUGE signal improvements, including WiFi
I went to the S5 from a Note 2. The S5 seems to have slightly better signal and seems to hold onto lower signal longer before switching to CDMA. That's the best part; the S5 switches between radios much quicker than the Note 2 did. When I lost LTE on the Note 2, it would take over a minute usually to switch to CDMA and even longer when it felt like switching back to LTE. When the S5 switches, it's usually functional within two or so seconds. Love it.

I went from an S3 to an S5 and have noticed the signal is much better on the S5, but that is not always the case. I had the S3 since it came out and never had issues with 4G at work or other places when the signal was good. The S5 seems to have issues connecting with 4G at the same places I have used the S3 where I never had issues before (e.g. work and other frequented places). So far it only seems to affect text and data. When I do have issues, I am able to receive text messages, but not send text messages. Also, data does not work at all. I have to change the network on my S5 to CDMA to get it work. When I arrive to work, I have to change it to CDMA and when I leave work I change back to 4G. Using the automatic network mode setting does not help either since it stays on the 4G setting. I have had the same issues at other places, but I don't visit those places daily. I called Sprint and they couldn't anything for me.

This is very helpful, thank you. I wonder though, if the Sprint radios are different from the Verizon ones as far as signal strength and quality... It would be interesting to find out whether the Verizon version has the same issues where 4g connected just fine with the S3, but has issues on the S5 as you had experienced.

I'm a Verizon user and have not experienced any of those issues that sz1980 has. I get reliable data and text in the places where my S3 did. I do also notice better reception in fringe/weak areas, such as at work where I get terrible reception. With the S3 I never could make a phone call, and text sending was hit or miss. With the S5 I can actually make a phone call, and text sending has been quite reliable.
Maybe your phone is simply defective sz1980. Have you tried exchanging it?

I have not because I don't think it's defective. If it were sporadic I would, but as soon as I am close to my desk at work, the issue starts. It appears I have signal, but as soon as I attempt a call, send a text, or use data the LTE symbol greys out. Again, it consistently happens at my desk where the S3 always worked.

It sure sounds defective to me; besides, what's the harm in doing an exchange? At least this way you'd be able to rule out the hardware as the issue. That said, it sounds like you don't want to do that, so it seems you just want to complain and not actually get the problem fixed.

My previous phone wasn't a Samsung, so I am not answering your question, but much of my work requires me to be in rural - even remote areas. My Verizon S5 is frequently the only phone in the room with a connection. I also used to have shaky connections at home (on Verizon). I now have a solid connection for both data and calls and have no dropped calls. I LOVE this phone!

I used to use iPhones so I don't go back with android to the S3 but recently have owned and used iPhone 5, LG G2, HTC One M8, Galaxy S5, Galaxy S5 developers edition and Moto Maxx Developers edition and hands down the Droid Maxx has the best reception. Note that all have been on Verizon so it may be different on different carriers (droid is Verizon only). Recently drove with my son from VA to CA. Son used the LG and I the Maxx. Maxx had better reception from coast to coast. Of course a lot of places neither one of us had any reception.
That said the S5 is good and I am enjoying my new Dev edition S5.

Sprint S4 petitions (need some bumping)

Hello XDA friends
Many of you know of the recent issues with the Sprint Galaxy S4 4.4.2 issues that have come up with the stock update. I have started a thread here https://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/161785 on the sprint community website.
Please take a moment to click and say hi in the thread just leave a little message to help your unrooted brethren out.
PS I will root soon and be back among the community but for now a little help would be appreciated
Thanks a bunch
I went to your thread expecting to see some issues posted but didn't. Just a side note since this was one of your complaints. There is no signal meter for Data services. The signal meter you see at the top of you phone is for voice service only and not LTE or 3g signal strength. If you have acceptable LTE signal strength it will connect and show the LTE symbol, if not, then 3g will be displayed. The signal lines are strictly voice and have nothing to do with data. So if you only have one signal bar displayed then you have week voice signal, but your LTE signal may be coming from another tower and be very strong.
Thanks for the info...
I was just bumping the thread over there. I don't think the average sprint online rep knows the difference

HTC U11 AT&T support and collection

this is going to be an AT&T specific collection thread for this carrier specific stuff like VVM and try to make wifi calling work, also users can ask any questions related to AT&T and I will try to answer them and hopefully other users can help to.
HTC lying about AT&T "compatibility"
U11 does not support VoLTE on AT&T
U11 does not support WiFi-Calling on AT&T
U11 does not support Video Call on AT&T
U11 does not support Integrated Visual Voicemail on messages app like it use to on HTC One M7, M8 & M9, you need the stand alone app which is crap...
the phone works for calls data LTE works MMS haven't test yet I don't use them....
Any comment from AT&T on any of this? We know HTC's saying it works.

Haha, AT&T never comments on these things.. and it won't work.. I have and unlocked GS8 and it don't work there either.. so no way in #[email protected] it will work on HTC..
Argh... This sucks. I'm in an area where coverage quality has dropped significantly, and I spend a lot of time in a building where almost no signal gets through from any provider. Wifi calling and texting has become a lot more important for me for that reason. I can get by without the extra features, but it's tough now what I've had them (currently using an S7 edge and Note 5).I guess that leaves me with no option but Samsung or LG (and all of the provider bloatware).

Not a fair critisim for HTC. Even if the phone is capable like my non-AT&T S8, if the phone does not have the AT&T logo on it they will not allow these features. So complain about AT&T like I do.

See if you still have LTE during a call. The LTE icon should go away and if you go into about phone and then network, it'll most likely say HSPA. The problem is we're not getting services like VoLTE and wifi calling. In normal cases, HSPA speeds should be manageable considering the average phone call won't be very long and there's wifi nearly everywhere now. This is just bad for those in areas with poor reception. I've been doing ok with the whole issue since I never really noticed much of a difference with HD voice and I'm usually always somewhere with wifi.
My question is what did they do differently with the U11 than the 10. We never had any of these issues with the 10 being unlocked and not certified and all that bs

The importance for me & probably for many others on getting VoLTE is that I do technical support on my phone and trouble shooting while on a call takes to much time most of the time, that being said if I don't have the option to make phone calls on VoLTE means internet speeds while on a call is crap.... I really don't care about HD call clarity as far as I can here the other person, but the internet speed while on a call it is important to me the faster I can browse the faster I can provide technical support

Having a weird issue with my U11 on AT&T. I randomly lose all signal for no reason then takes a good 30 seconds for it to connect again.
It has happened at least a couple times a week mid phone call which is really obnoxious. I have seen it happen a few times when I am just browsing through my phone not on a call so I know its not just a calling issue, and I am sure it has happened multiple times when I am not looking at my phone at all and I don't notice.
Anyone else had this issue? An issue with AT&T and can be fixed by a firmware update? Or am I alone and need to RMA?
I know this thread is old, but can't we use the ATT RUU if you do what you need to do? We used to be able to go back and forth, at least that's what I did with both my M7 and M8. If you really need those features, that's what I would do.
