Ok so i dopped my nexus 7. LCD is fine, is it possible to fix just the Digitizer? Seems im just finding videos on the whole package. Its about half the price to buy just the digitizer compared to the combo.
Any help?
don't think you can. the digitizer is glued to the LCD to minimize thickness. you have to replace the whole screen.
maybe its a good excuse to buy the new n7 instead of fixing it.

Yes you can. I've done it just to find out, and someone else has. The work is reported in a dedicated thread in here somewhere. Except the task takes a long time and a lot of patience. The saving eventually might not justify the effort, unfortunately. If the dig still works, you might want to wait till the combo drops to $50.00 or something. Otherwise, check this guy out.

hello
my nexus 7's screen cracked after just 4 days of light use .. and now I have a triangular area in the top right of my screen that's not responding to the touch so that now I can't get to the right notification area unless rotate the screen or use a mouse . so I was thinking of replacing it.
since I live in Egypt and I had the tablet shipped to me from the US my only option is getting a screen shipped from ebay and installing it myself. so I was wondering what kind of screen should I get to get the whole touch screen working again.
i've been looking on ebay and was wondering if something like this might work?
http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/view...1082526272&index=1&nav=SEARCH&nid=34354766081
I am not a very technical person so I am sure what the digitizer is.but I am guessing it's the part that broke to make the screen unresponsive.
so . should I get this one? if not what should I get?
I am looking for something cheap since the shipping cost is a lot.
thanks in advance
just upping the thread. I need the answer desperately

With screen + shipping + labour charge (to change screen).. Isn't it better if you get a new set and sell off the broken one on eBay? At least it's a new set and problem free.
a new replacement screen costs as much as a new Nexus 7. I cracked mine in January. The only way to use it is to connect a mouse which is pretty lame. Waiting for the newer Nexus 7.
since I live in Egypt. I can't really sell stuff on eBay. and my nexus 7 is the 3G version so I can't afford getting a new one.
I am really confused about the concept of a touch screen, a digitizer and an LCD. what is the differences between them and what do I really need?
if you can help me with eBay links I would much appreciate it.
thanks in advance
There is a guide here on how to change the screen (ok it seems I can't post the link because don't have enough posts. If you go to ifixit and search for nexus 7, there is a guide there)
The touchscreen part (digitizer) is the outer glass.
The LCD is bonded to the glass.
I've only ever seen the lcd and digitizer sold together. It is a lot easier to change them as one unit instead of trying to remove the broken digitizer from the lcd.
As people have said the price of the part outweighs the cost of fixing it, but if you really wanted to do it you should find all the information above.

I agree a second hand one though would be a lot more economical

I dropped my Nexus 7 today, the screen cracked even though it was in a case. The display is fine, however 1/3 of the touchscreen will not respond.
The bezel is also cracked. Image attached.
So...
Question one: Anyway I can send this in for free with the warranty?
Question two: What can be done to fix it; that won't cost more than the device itself?
Question three: Project ideas to make this thing useful?

Standard warranty won't cover mishandling, which is your case, unless you bought replacement warranty from some retailers;
You can buy the whole assembly for around $100; or you can try salvaging the display by prying it off the touchscreen, buy a touchscreen for about half, then put them together - which is something I'm looking at, though it doesn't look like it can be done in 15;
You can rotate the thing around to control the touch, if you have nothing better to do with your time;
You can use an OTG cable and hook up a mouse to it. This will do almost anything your finger(s) can, albeit cumbersomely;
Nexus has no output to tv or monitor without additional equipment; so best use is to put it on Ebay and maybe recoup some of the cost.
I might get around to the chore soon, and will let you know if you're game.

Well alternatively you could try the fastboot method of replacing/flashing systems (ie: flashing .img files). Also you *might* be able to pick the rom, depending on which portions of the screen is responsive.
Might even be able to do it via adb, if I knew what kind of commands you would give to recovery.
Hi all. ok, so basically i dropped my n4 a few months ago and it cracked the top of the screen a little but it took out 80% of the touchscreen. its only usable now by constantly rotating it in the hope that what i need to touch is in the area which works. I have since bought a new phone (z1) but it seems a waste to have a perfectly ok n4 sitting around doing nothing.
choices are to
a) sell it (not get much for it i'm guessing)
b) fix it (replacement screen and digitizer cost a lot more than its worth doing plus i most likely wouldnt be able to do it myself)
c) repurpose it.
so i guess the real question is, what can i use it for? i cant seem to find any decent remote control apps so that i can use a touch screen of a diff android device to control it so its all a little tricky to do stuff on.
any ideas?
You can buy replacement LCD assembly on eBay for under 130 shipped. If you're in US. The job is pretty straight forward. On YouTube there are a lot of walkthroughs

yeah, i know, i'm in the uk though and they seem to be in excess of £70. given that i mess up putting a screen protector on i dont think i'd be able to put a new screen on. especially given i could probably buy a 2nd hand n4 for about £100 these days it doesnt really seem to a be a lot of point in going to all that effort.

i pulled apart my broken n4 to have a look inside. there's no way i'd bother attempting a repair without the correct tools and lots of skills. it only takes a slight error to mess it up.
I bought an assembly digitizer+screen and it came with all the tools. It took me 13 minutes to take it apart and put it back together. I took it apart later to do the thermal mods too. It's really not that hard. I did it with no static protection, and I was very very careless pulling it apart. I even bent the board with the usb plug on it and it still works.
Seriously just fix it yourself.
well the point of the thread really was for ideas for using it with the dodgy touchscreen. i honestly cant see a point in spending nearly the cost in getting a 2nd hand n4 to repair mine.
Home entertainment console? Combined with slimport or something else this can make your TV a smart tv

Use OTG and connect mouse to the phone through USB. What say?
Repair it.
yeah i'm going to order a usb host adapter. might get a hdmi cable thing too. is there a special type of cable thats required? searching on ebay for them they seem to mention slimport and they are like £20 which is a bit more than i wanted to spend given i'm not sure what i'm using it for yet!
does anyone know if there exists a combined usb host/hdmi/charging cable?
hi,
what is the advantage of buying this screen?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Touch-S...e_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item4d16e48a92
what are the risks?
or compensates more buy:

The first one seems to be Synaptics, without the frame. It means you have to glue it to your old frame yourself. No need to worry about speaker size here, since it won't include one.
The seconds one seems to be Atmel with frame, but notice the big speaker. It must be compatible otherwise the speaker stops working (as far as I know U8800 ships with small speaker, but I can't be sure).
is easy to paste?

It's not hard at all. You just need to be careful not to spill it on the touch screen visible part.
Getting the old touch screen off might take some time, as the cover is not that strong. I removed it slowly and it came off pretty well.
is there any tutorial?

How about this one?
ebay.com/itm/New-Touch-Screen-Digitizer-Huawei-U8800-Ideos-X5-AT-T-/280972093595
It' a little bit cheaper and looks the same as the first one, in the first post.
I'm having some problems with my touchscreen, where sometime it detects some inputs in the right area of the screen. It's truly annoying, as you my think....
I'm thinking about buying a new one.
Which one is better by the way, Synaptics or Atmel? I would like something cheap, but that don't work/feel garbage...
A video about the replacement steps: youtube.com/watch?v=CgtaBxR-6mk
PS: replace xx by tt in the links. sorry about that, forum restrictions.:silly:

Synaptics is more or less ok, but Atmel is more configurable and with my ROM you get 10 point multitouch.
The video is nice, but it seems to describe the method where you have touch screen with the FRAME, so it does not involve replacing the actual digitizer. The eBay link offers just the digitizer, so an extra step is needed to replace the digitizer in the frame with the new one.

I thought that the multitouch limit of 2 was an hardware thing! That is very good! I'm using your CM11, and I can only make 2 multitouch at a time. So, it's a Synaptics touch, right?
Aren't you going to change the driver in the next ROM, because of the problems turning the screen off/on?
Keep the good work on that.
So, the initial problems (2012) that the Atmel touch had, are gone?
About the video, there is really one steep missing. I'm a little worried about damaging the metalic frame arround the phone, to separate the "glass" from the frame. Maybe from the inside it's easier, i hope.
Thanks!
The screens are very expensive, which is making me think It might be worth selling the phone faulty..
Maybe something is just loose inside? This is after I dropped it, by the way.

looks like the display is warping on the inside. i just replaced my brother's nexus 4 screen and it was pretty straight forward. it was 54 bucks on eBay.

Try replace only the screen not the with the frame because you'll have to change allso the battery. It's glued on the old frame and there are 90% chanses you'll broke it when removeing.
Search on youtube for videos.
Cheers.
Yea definitely worth fixing the screen, I broke my phone too and was considering selling for parts, but after looking into it it's definitely worth fixing.
Selling for parts will get you around £45.
Screen replacement part on ebay is £37.99 - this is the one I bought: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171062747594?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
Selling used nexus 4 will get you around £140 +
So assuming you fix it yourself, repairing the phone will add £100 to the value. Minus the cost of the new screen, that's still around £60 you've gained by fixing it - as well as being able to actually use the phone until you want to upgrade.
