Root apps - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

So I rooted my device for the first time a few weeks ago (hallelujah!) I found a few root apps, I know about the famous root apps(Tit. Backup, Greenify, setcpu, etc.) but I was wondering if there are any underated root apps?

Airdroid is kind of cool. It allows you to control your Android from a computer.

I like Light Manager. It lets you set the notification LED color and blinkiness, or lack of blinkiness (i.e. solid), for notifications from different apps.

There are tons and tons of under-rated root apps and even apps that don't require root. You'll have to kind of discover those as you go.
But if you're not on a custom ROM, with root, you can remove bloatware!

I try every app for whatever need I have. I.e, tried all the launchers, all the file managers, etc...what kinds of apps are you needing, or what are you interested in? I was thinking just today that I need to start blogging app reviews for power users...

Has anyone been successful with rooting on DL17 version?
And if so, can you point me to the instructions?

Why root?

I am no Android noobie, owned a Aria, DHD, Galaxy, etc. Never had a Nexus device though. It's quite obvious as to why you need to root these phones because of the crappy software but why should I root my new Nexus that's coming tomorrow?

Why have Root access - titanium backup
Why have Custom recovery - custom Roms
While the software on here is great already, custom Roms make it just that much better.

I'm wondering the same thing. I think I'll keep as is for the time being until I do some more research.

I didn't root for the reason of roms I did it for the blocking of ads, some app in the app store that require root like flashlight and etc
Nexus 7 of HELLBoy
Adfree to block ads
Titanium backup to backup /restore/freeze apps
Root explorer to modify system files
Six axis controller to link ps3 controller over Bluetooth for emulators and games
I could go on but you get the idea

I just bought this phone.

Couldn't resist myself seeing as I am now far too pissed with the crappy radio chip in the Gnex. Cost me 580 euros on my vacation here in Finland.

Best phone ever. Enjoy!
Enjoy man. I also had a GNexus previously, and I found that the hardware on SGS3 is so much better. Camera, storage, processor, everything is much better. You just have to learn how to deal with Samsung bloatware and be happy
right choice
I can live with TW for now.

You can always put a different launcher on the stock ROM

Is there a way to deactivate bloatware without rooting?

Removing bloatware requires you to edit Rom and that requires root

Please note he said deactivate, not remove. You can still freeze a lot of the bloat without rooting. Go into system settings - application manager - all. Select the bloat in question then select disable. The bloat will no longer be able to run and won't appear in the app drawer.

But a lot of the bloatware can be removed with root only. The easiest way imo is to root and use titanium backup to freeze them.

Yes I know you need root to remove it. He asked how to deactivate it without rooting. Deactivating != removing.

Apps started crashing after rooting my N4 ?

Does rooting affect the way the device performs ? Everything is still smooth, but I get about 1 or 2 crashes a day. Does rooting have anything to do with this ?
It shouldn't, unless you tinkered with system. Which apps are crashing?

Regular apps, no pattern. Last I remember was facebook before I went asleep yesterday. All I did after rooting my device is install these apps:
-Nexus 4 Display (for tinkering with RGB)
-SuperSU
-Titanium Backup

I rooted my S4 Active, now what....

I am still pretty new to android, but I can follow instructions, so I rooted the as4 Active.
I removed the bloatware, I think.
What now? What is worth my time to do?
Really all I feel like I need is to play emulators with a PS3 controller, any good free apps for that?

Welcome to XDA by the way
Yeah, I guess reading 100 pages of the same suggestions of how to and what I have already done is worth while.
Everyone says to root the phone, but I guess there is no real use.

The biggest advantages for me were to be able to run Titanium backup, ad block, Helium, Xposed and have read/write access to the system folder. With access to system, you can remove or disable apps you can't normally uninstall. You can also install modified system APKs like the dark dialer.
So there are a few advantages that let you have a more control control over your phone, but it is a few steps short of loading a full blown custom ROM in recovery.

So, I downloaded Dark Dialler, moved the original files, but it wont let me move the new ones into the app folder.
