[Q] Overheating - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Has anyone else experienced their s4 getting really hot to the point where you can't even hold it? I closed and froze all the bloatware apps and even have a plain black wallpaper, and it still reaches 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

That's nothing. I use it for texting and I'm at 105° in minutes. I put it on power saving and limited my use and barely got it under 97°. Battery life is still phenomenal though :/

Me and my friends that own a Galaxy S4 experience the same problem.
Galaxy S4 devices do seem to heat up quickly and intensely.
What I recommend is the following (In order):
Decrease display brightness
Enable Power saving mode
Disable Wi-Fi when not in use
Disable Bluetooth when no in use
Disable gimmick features (Air gestures)
Un-install/Disable Bloatware apps

this is what happens when you pack a quadcore into 35 millimeters.... no fix. best you can do is underclock

95 F is not really that hot. About the coolest it can get is room temperature. When you need to start worrying is when it hits more than 65C. Otherwise it is fairly normal.

[Q] Nexus 4 Heating and Battery Issues

Hello so I bought my N4 on the Dec 3 batch and got it around Feb, the works fine and all but I have 2 main questions
1. The phone gets hot doing simple tasks like browsing the web or watching a youtube video. I am running the CM 10.1 Nightlies and Franco's Kernel r110. Sometimes the phone can get really hot which I then stop using it to prevent any damage. Does this have anything to do with the Custom ROM or kernel because my friend's N4 is stock and unrooted and hes doesn't have any heat issues.
2. The battery on the phone is not what I expected. I hear people who get 4-5 hours on screen time, but I get around 2-2.5. Also I am on a Canadian provider which is Mobilicity if that has anything to do with it. I leave 3G on mostly and just surf the web when the screen is on.
Thanks for any input you guys leave.
If you can take it back to stock and don't root because that is why your friend's N4 is normal besides what more do you want that the N4 doesn't have?
Sent from my GOOGLE NEXUS 4 using xda app-developers app
I like the root features and also cm 10.1 if its the ROM that's making it overheat then I know to change or find a better one

Hi,
As always "overheating" is very subjective, it depends on how you feel the heat.
CPU / battery temperature?
In any case there is a protection, a thermal throttling. At certain CPU / battery temperatures the CPU frequence is automatically lowered to help reduce the temperature. In extreme temperature the phone shutdown to avoid damages so no worries.
In 3G the phone heated a little more, no problem here that the phone heats up when you re browsing or you're watching a video on Youtube.
You can try to undervolt a little to see if that helps.
As for battery life it depends on too many factors... CPU settings, screen brightness, signal quality, etc...
Search about your questions in this section or in the General section, there are lots of threads about it.
What temperature does your phone actually get? When running stock it would be impossible to see my phone get other 43c and that was only under very heavy gaming but would usually be at 32-36c ive noticed my phone does get hotter when using mobile data instead of wifi. Now running rasbean with franco m1 and temps abit lower gaming has improved greatly but i dont think there is any difference in battery life compared to stock but your 2-2.5 screen time does seem abit low as i get with just web browsing maybe few youtube vids and few minutes of games around 4 hours screen time but i also envy those who are getting 5+ hours
---------- Post added at 11:34 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:30 AM ----------
Forgot to mention thats 4 hours on wifi on mobile internet i should be able 2 get over 3 hours
The phone gets hot very easily in my opinion idk the exact temp but I have the ringke slim on it and its definitely noticeable from the top of the phone to the bottom. Also does my carrier have anything to do with it because brightness on my phone is pretty low and simple stuff tends to drain my battery.

When i was using a case on my phone it was getting hot from top to bottom but now i don't use case it doesn't get as hot and usually stays cooler at bottom half. I have found most accurate way to check your battery temp is by going on call and dialling *#*#4636#*#* and a hidden menu will come up and tap battery information you will see temp, there was an app that had same info but cant remember name so when you think its hot dial that code and let me know what temp it shows. Also are you using mobile internet or wifi when its getting hot?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I think it usually gets hot when using 3G so I'm assuming mobilicity isn't that good for this phone? Also I can clearly tell its the top part that is hot when the case is on
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Yep mine also gets noticeably hotter on 3g and yeah it gets hot at the top but after a while will spread to bottom to thats normal. I am currently running rasbean rom with franco milestone 1 and also downloaded pimp my rom from play it has various tweaks and mods so i just flashed battery saving which supposed to help with battery not sure what it does though lol but i managed to get 3 hours 40 mins screen time half of time it was on minimum brightness and other half on 40% was just internet browsing and im sure you will agree that is very good considering i was using 3g the whole time
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Just an update you should try undervolting on franco as i have now done it and it definitely helps with heating and i am pretty sure it has vastly improved my battery life if your interested i will post the values i have used which seems to be perfectly stable so far
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Yes please, do I need any app for this or can I just do it in the settings?
do you have the franco app? As that was what i used to change my setting if yes just go on frequencies/voltages go down to voltages and change from there i have attached screenshot of my setting and make you do not set voltages on boot as if it is unstable your phone is not going to boot up if that is ticked, you will have to change that everytime you reboot until you are sure its stable then u can set on boot

Do you have a bad signal? Because if so then that will drain your battery a lot more quickly and also possibly make the phone heat up more.

Battery life problems

Is anyone else experiencing very bad battery life? I use it for five minutes and it drops 5%... Am I doing some
Thing wrong?
Sent from my SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
Welcome to life of the S4. No youre not doimg anything wrong. The best thing I can suggest is using Juice Defender, and a Task Manager. Turning mobile data off when not in use, screen brightness at about halfway. I can squeez about 20 hours out of this phone with moderate use this way.

You're doing something wrong if it drops one percent per minute

You could give the new qualcomm battery app a shot... takes a few days to read your usage then starts adjusting things like app sync times etc to save your battery.
I just started trying it out. Looks promising.

From my personal experience with it, it keeps waking up my phone when it goes into deep sleep. It wastes more battery by constantly waking it than it saves me.

When you restore your phone, are you restoring all the apps? One bad app is all it takes. you should reset to stock, and not install any apps. Then when you see that it runs ok, install one at a time as you test.
Not sure who has lag issues, but my phone rocks. No lag here and battery life is great.
No lag here, at all... My best for battery is 3 days, with 4 and a half hours screen-time...

Keep in mind there are lots of variables at work.
Wifi vs. Cell data - Turn on Wifi and battery usage goes down a LOT - if you are in a wifi area all the time. Cellular data is a battery pig.
Weak signal area - another battery pig - i have had phones drain in 8 hours doing nothing if i had poor reception
Usage mix - Your 2.5 hours of screen time, could be good if you have screen at high brightness and are streaming cellular data (movie) and if you are also syncing email, facebook, and everything else in the background.
If you do all your data by Cellular, then 4 hours of screen time will probably be your limit. It is hard to tell if you have a wake lock issue or not, as we don't know anything else about your usage, apps that are frozen, gestures on/off, etc.

Root performance vs Stock performance?

Hey guys, I just bought my U.S. Galaxy Note 2014 Wifi version for $550 (no tax on military base), which is quite expensive to me, but so far I really like the tablet. I just think it's got quite a premium price to it.
So last night I watched a 25 minute Youtube video with the screen brightness all the way down, and from what I could tell, no other apps running.
My battery life went down 15%-20%. Does that sound about right?
I want to root my device but I've never rooted anything so I figured I'd post this question up while I read about it.
Has rooting your Galaxy Note 2014 helped its battery life and the overall performance?
I've rooted mine and yes the battery life and performance has improved. You can uni stall bloat ware like my magazine which is constantly tag cpu. Also you get apps that when rooted you can select all or any app you want to for multi screen and pen window which is awesoms

That sounds great. Is the S-Pen functionality any different?
No different at all. If you keep touchwiz if will all look the same just you will have access to anything. I uni stalled all the samsung stuff that are useless. E.g chat on, samsung hub etc froze push notification and my magazine. Working great . Still leggy here and but more updates will come im sure. But faster. My battery is on 19 percent and it's been off charge since about 11 the afternoon. But Ive practically all day been watching programmes , playing games and surfing the Web . With lowish screen brightness
Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Odd, the DAY I picked mine up, without doing any of the launch-day updates, I still managed a less than 25% use from watching a feature-length HD movie (Pacific Rim, picked up on Samsung Hub with the credits. THAT was a pain in the ass). I wasn't even watching it at minimum brightness, probably more inbetween 20 and 40 percent.
Full use of series games and browsing all day I got 13 hours. Which is very good for heavy use
Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Alright I'll give it a full charge as see how long it lasts with a full HD movie.
Must reduce google services like google now. It will make battey drain fast,
Root and remove bloat ware and you will see smooth and longer battery. samsung very stupid when install too many bloatware.
hi,can i ask which are the bloatware that i can remove?thx
I uni stalled. Chat on, samsung hub, samsung apps, etc. I froze samsung push notifications service and my magazine, , add a huge difference. If u don't use it freeze or delete, just be careful not to delete Nothing important. Other than touchwiz all the samsung stuff pretty much is bloat ware
Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
And in this way does the battery live so longer? Thx
Mines majorly improved. I get about 14 hours of heavy use with the brightness on about 20 percent.

[Q] Does overheating kill my S4 (I9500)

Does the overheating eventually kill my S4? I have CM 11 (Android 4.4.2) and the problem still persist. I can't update via OTA since its rooted. I also don't want to lose any apps because they are large apps and dont want to bother to download them again. So will it actually gonna kill my S4 someday?

The Android 4.4.2 for S4 is leaked version. It is not published Officially by samsung and it may has many bugs. (eg. overheating, ...)
Overheating can eventually cause some serious problems. The board is able to adjust slightly with flexing caused by heat, but eventually soldered connections will give in and break if your device is getting extremely hot. When or what is causing it to get so hot?

@megamanDJ It overheats when browsing, playing games. Does this eventually break the LCD screen ( not the gorilla glass 3 ) ?

No it won't break the HD Super Amoled screen.
Overheating will eventually cause logic board failures and shorten the batteries' life span

Not a little bit hot but perheps if it reaches 85 degrees+ all the time. But even in doing so it will still (from my experience) last longer that you'd ever keep this phone for.

They have quite a few apps out there for monitoring temps and whatnot. I personally use Android Tuner for everything I monitor. As a huge plus, this app is one of the most versatile apps (especially if rooted) I've come across and have had for a long time. Its good for adjusting or tuning down anything that may cause overheating as well as view summaries of the culprits

I agree. You don't hear too often about someone's phone overheating to the point of failure. I've seen one phone that would get so hot you almost couldn't hold it in your hand, and had a habit of doing that but was ultimately broken months later by a shopping cart.:silly:
Still a decent monitoring app (among dozens on the market) can help you monitor temps and pinpoint when, where, and what is causing problems.
Thank you the app works. Is there anyway to drop the temperature as low as you can? Like 26 C? I disabled my Google account stuff and sync and removed the sim card because I use this phone as a gaming device. When I play a few rounds of subway surfers it already gets to medium warm and for 3D games it gets warmer more faster.

I would say you are safe in that temp range. Its when you get 80 C and above that that's causing damage. Also are these temps from the battery or the CPU? The CPU can and will get to 60 C temps at times which is normal.
CPU I played the game six guns for almost an hour and it didn't go over 65 C and I think I totally screwed up my ext SDcard

If you are having heating problems while playing 3D games alone then you might want to try experimenting with using different GPU settings. You can try tuning down the frequency. It may or may not help with temp being its only a frequency setting. Try also using the app "Greenify" to put as many of the remaining apps that you don't absolutely need running into hibernation. Greenify is a lot more efficient when it comes to keeping apps from using resources.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda app-developers app
How to adjust the GPU frequency settings? Does this affect the quality of the game after its adjusted? But I do not think adjusting the GPU frequency settings will work. The overheating problem is caused by the CPU. May try Greenify app.

If your GPU is capable of adjusting the frequency then it will show you in the Android Tuner app next to the CPU settings, but you're right it wont help with overheating. You can set your CPU governor to "powersaver" and underclock by sliding the max frequency setting down one step at a time until you notice a difference in temp. Greenify is a huge help mainly with battery saving which in turn stops a lot of unnecessary CPU draw.
Does under clocking CPU will cause large 3S games crash? Hope it doesnt

Bad idea. When I change it to power save it makes every sluggish and laggy even I turn one step down the CPU thing its sluggish

The coolest running samsung device I've ever had.

you know what I love most? the fact that every samsung I've ever owned (two gs3's, gs4, and gs5 for a day) ran incredibly hot. like the back would get so hot near the camera on the gs4 and by the ear piece on the screen that it was so annoying to hold.. battery temperature would easily hit 40 degrees Celsius and above...
but the note 4 is the first samsung I've had that doesn't get hot. I can use it for a long time on 4g and the battery temp hovers around 35 maximum, and the cpu temp hardly hits 65. the back is cool to the touch, same with the screen. it's unbelievable. I absolutely love how cool this phone runs! anyone else?
