Many custom roms allow you to customise the auto brightness, but I prefer to use lux auto brightness app - it is brighter by default. I'm not sure about the HTC one, but using one of those two solutions (and colour calibration if necessary using a custom kernel) it will improve

I strongly recommand you to actually upgrade to full version of lux.
The auto profile is amazing, during night time it automatically dim out more than the day profile. Best 4 bucks I've ever spent on play store

I will definitely buy the full. For now I will run it as much as possible. I'm having good battery life and this app seems no effect on it.

Lower Brightness Setting

I have my brightness setting as low as it will go. At night (darkness) it's still too bright. Is there a way to get the brightness even lower? Thanks.
i've been wondering this too, haha
i just keep everything on the lowest, and make sure the browser setting are adjusted too
Any solution yet?
Has any one found a way to this cos the brightness really hurts my eyes at night!
Thanks.
Try an app called dimmer in the market. It will set brightness to 10. The default low point is 30

use a voodoo kernel with colorfix. the lowest brightness setting will be suitable at night after installation.

Thank you - I've been looking for something like this since I got my Vibrant. I'm also going to try Screen Filter and see which one works better.
Man screen filter works perfectly! ..cept for notification bar
Been trying to figure this out forever

Disable auto brightness?

Since we have root now. Anyone found a way to disable the auto brightness?
Dazzle allows this to be switched off without going root.

Well for me Dazzle to disable auto brightness dont work...
Dazzle does not allow the user to disable auto brightness on the Xperia Play.
Dazzle and all other brightness control apps dont work on play. Play works differently from other android phones, even Arc......
If you have root access you can alter the sensor behavior to shift between brightness levels more slowly instead of fast and jerky, but it appears it is never completely disabled.

Some people are having trouble if they put a screen protector on. Did you put one on? If so you need to cut out the part over the square sensor.
Is the brightness issue europe only? I have been using mine here in the US and it seems I am able to disable auto brightness and have manual control. The auto brightness seems to work better than my fascinate. Any US play users having the auto brightness issue.

how do you disable it? there is no setting unless you root it.
My apologies your right. I cannot disable it. It looks like it only operates at about 30 percent from where I set the brightness and the changes in the auto brightness are so Minor I barley notice it at the higher brightness levels. I guess I was expecting much worse.

Some people have been complaining about it flickering when they have a screen protector over the sensor.

Sadly on mine (UK, unlocked, rooted) there's no option to disable it - there's a bar to adjust the "base" brightness, but it'll still dim whatever that's set to...
if you have root you can disable this, but it is only temporary as somewhere in the system it re-enables this.
create a gscript with su ability
echo "0" > /sys/devices/i2c-0/0-0040/leds/lcd-backlight/als/enable

lasts around an hour, stops the flicker in bad light situations

For everyone still having problems with Auto Dim on the Xperia Play, there is an app in the Android market made just for the Xperia Play!
Search: Disable Auto Brightness by hatcyl in the android market!
This app will stop the screen from Dimming / Brightening once it is being used.

I bought your app, congratulations for the work done, but for display brightness?IS low
Well in the description it says that the brightness will depend on how bright it is when you unlock the screen and it remains that way. So if you're in the dark it stays that way until locked.

Instructions cleary say:
This app disables the light sensor AFTER you unlock your screen. So screen will remain dim at night and bright in the day. For maximum screen brightness, unlock your phone while it is bright!

So, place phone somewhere bright, and unlock screen. It'll stay bright.

Lower brightness settings

Hi
Could someone told me if there is a mod or some settings to do in order to get a brightness lower than the min value, I do use the phone sometimes at night but I found out that the min value is too bright for me, compared to my xperia S, which is very low..

Is this maybe that thing that you're looking for?
Screen Filter
This app makes your colours look washed out, but makes the backlight less intense.
Thank you, screen goes a little grey but it's fine

There is an app called LUX, which can reduce you brightness to "0". It also does a much better job of auto brightness control that Android does in general, so your battery should last longer

App/tweak that adds the steps for auto brightness?

I'm looking for that tweak that adds the small adjustments for auto brightness, so you can lower/raise the auto settings without losing the automatic part. Some Roms have it cooked in, but unfortunely the one I'm using does not!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda app-developers app
I have never seen it in any MDL of MF3 rom. If you want that feature I would suggest installing a international rom. For some stupid reason Samsung doesn't use it in the US version of their phones.

Infact you can use it. Install the xposed framework and then Wanam Exposed. Among other things there's an option for it.
Try this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.velis.auto.brightness

I use and like the pro version of it.
The app lets me choose a preferred brightness level for various night or day brightness.
Such as if I'm next to the dim lamp next to my bed, I tell Lux how bright (or dark) I want my phone and everytime my phone gets to that level of light, it will automatically adjust to my preferred backlight level.

[Q] Auto-Brightness Confusion

Can someone please explain how the auto-brightness works on this phone it seems to act a lot weirder than my galaxy nexus did. What does it mean when it talks about setting the baseline brightness and in what context? Do you use it? If so what brightness do you have it set to?
This phone has the worst auto-brightness of any device I've used.
I need to read the manual. I'm assuming the baseline is the minimum brightness, but it never seems to change when expected.
I chose to use a 3rd party app to manage it. Lux auto brightness works really well, and you can calibrate it any way you'd like.
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk 4
I have mine set to 40% on auto. I found the best way to decide the minimum brightness was to set it at a comfortable level in a dark environment.
To test this, set up your minimum brightness, then point the screen (ambient light sensor) at a light source, keep your eye on the screen and it'll gradually brighten. I've found mine to work pretty well and rarely have to manually override it, but the change is a lot slower than my note 2.

Get lux lite from the play store. It works great
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk 4
Comfortable in a dark room for me is about 5%, unfortunately even in the brightest of sun it seems like the phone never turns its brightness up at all when on auto like this. Anything less than 50% seems to break auto brightness for my device and that is just sad. Even when it works when set above 50%, it takes 5 seconds or so to adjust which is just terrible and the brightness seems to still act funny about how and when it decides to change. It really is the worst auto brightness ever.
Whoops!

Thanks for the recommendation guys that app seems to work sooooo much better than the stock auto brightness so far. The stock auto-brightness is garbage on this phone. Seems like the stock setting either doesn't get bright enough or doesn't get dark enough.
I don't agree, either I have a working phone or others are broke, but this is the best autobright performing phone I've every used, after the hd2, galaxy nexus, note 1 and note 2. Its perfect according to the ambient light situation and is really fast acting
