Bravia Engine 2 Sample - Xperia Z General

Quite obvious difference, this picture is good for making comparisons
and bravia and x-reality DO NOT work in 3rd party galleries
UPDATED : X-reality port used, not oversaturated like bravia, still have some enhancement.

See the lack of detail of the centre star with bravia on,i think that isnt lokking nice,
The rest of the picture is nice with bravia on

absolutely terrible.

Bravia engine enhances color and saturation.. I never liked it... Feels like having an AMOLED screen.

among the bravia enchanced colour, red to pink colour is the most obvious

Hey thanks for the comparison. There is certainly a difference between the pictures. I was thinking about unlocking my bootloader but was worried at the loss of BE. But after looking at the picture I'm not so sure I would miss it.
To me xreality looks the better picture.
Sent from the Zed

What I see from this comparison is, Xreality is like BE but with less saturation.. Really close to the original image

X-reality is very good once it is ported properly, a few files need to modified on a Rom to get it working as it should the bravia engine2 toggle does nothing for X-reality as it has the wrong reference for activating it, plus X-reality will only work with the album that is designed to use it.

Unlocked bootloaders
I know the "stock" Bravia Engine doesn't work on unlocked bootloaders due to the loss of the DRM keys. But what about the ported X-Reality Engine, is it still dependent of the DRM keys, or does it work on unlocked bootloaders (pretty much like the ported BE2 on other, non-Sony phones)?

You can only get bravia/X-reality to partially Work on ubl's because of Drm and the fact that only Sony's stock based kernels have the supporting files needed for it to do its job properly, unless a kernel developer can port the kernel parts to a non stock kernel and then bypass Drm key check?

Thats your opinion.
I personaly dislike both bravia engine 2 and X-Reality and rather have "nothing" than any of them.
We do gain some color "punch" (aka saturation) on the more soft tones, but that saturation is excessive making you lose some detail on the high spectrum of the colors.
If you check it carefully on the bravia and x-reality pictures on a certain point the reds are all equal on the very high/bright portion of the picture, you just see a lot of bright red and no detail nor diferenciation in high tones of red.
It's basicaly just a software trick to make colors look more vivid and make the LCD screen look better than it actualy is. Kinda like what Sony did with XZ to make blacks "darker", you gain a lot of black clipping instead. Makes it look better to a 1st glance but after you test it better you realize you've just been tricked.

Washed out video qualtiy

When I compare the N7 to my Note 2 on the same video the N7 looks very washed out compared to to my Note 2. (or my old Note).
I tried a ROM with the Bravia engine but still did not see much of an improvement.
Does the Bravia engine work on video or just images? What is the deal on that?
Is there anyway to tweak the image quality?
You should try posting in the designated Q&A thread for the Nexus 7.....just sayin'.

Don't try to compare the N7 screen with a Samsung screen, which probably has Amoled, they're different. I noticed this too when I compared it to my S2, but it's understandable and I don't pay much attention to it.

On another note the colors really aren't that "true" on the n7 they are pretty washed out. Comparing the colors of the n7 to my Dell IPS monitor shows just how washed out the n7 is.

New Firmware Camera Shots Please

Hello all. I had the XZ for around a week and a bit. I returned the device as I found the camera hugely disappointing in comparison to my old XS, which is a great snapper.
Camera quality is a big draw for me so I'm excited to hear that Sony have overhauled the crippling camera algorythms for this latest software update. I'm considering getting another XZ, as the S4 really doesn't interest me and the One's camera is patently sh*te in daylight conditions.
So, help please: Could you post pictures taken by your Z with the new software? I'm really keen to see the improvement and judge for myself.
(And, if anyone who has owned both could tell me, after the update, which is the better camera, the Xz or the XS?)
Well I have both devices and even before the update I felt the Zs camera was much better. The Ss camera held more detail. Yes! But that only gave it an advantage in daylight conditions. In all other conditions, the Z beats it hands down. The amount of noise on the Ss pictures are horrendous! Especially indoors and in low light.
After the update, the Z makes up the ground in detail but a lot of noise is also invited into the picture. Again, that's indoors and under low light.
The Zs camera is, as it's always been much better than the Ss.
Attached is a picture taken after the update, you can check the detail it preserves for yourself.

Noise is higher when using superior auto, but with the normal mode it's pretty good I think.

I didn't use superior auto in any of the pictures I posted, only normal mode with HDR on-off. If I used night mode/scene then the quality would be a lot better though. But I didn't thought of it at that time. You can see night mode pictures in the topic where I posted my pictures.

Here is some comparison of latest .253 Xperia Z camera v/s Galaxy Note II v/s iPhone 5.
My View:
1st pic - Exposure control the best in Xperia Z, iPhone 5 second, Note II is completely out, it is over expose.
2nd pic - Note II the best here, 2nd is iPhone 5, lastly Xperia Z.
3rd pic - Xperia Z still much closer to actual color - the best, Note II - not clear and not sharp, iPhone 5 - clear and sharp but too bright than actual.
In overall summary of 3 device camera:
Xperia Z - due to some issue on the superior auto mode which only generate noise now, need to pick scene mode or manual adjust for decent output. Point and shoot will be easier once Sony fix the Superior Mode. Now you still can get a decent in details just more step is required.
Note II - Probably due to too big size or whatever, it is easier get blur image, need some pressure to hold tide for decent output.
iPhone 5 - don't have much fancy setting, but iPhone 5 is the most easier point and shoot, you get 100% sharp in details image.
More camera shoot comparison of Xperia Z v/s iPhone 5. (No Note II this time as the owner not around).
My View:
1st photo - iPhone 5 win here, it capture more details than Xperia Z.
2nd photo - Both quite equal, but I like Xperia Z leaf color + iPhone 5 water pool color.
3rd photo - This one I give winner to Xperia Z, they is big sunlight there, Xperia Z can capture the light and color look alive.
4th photo - Obvious iPhone 5 great control of noise than Xperia Z here. Color wise iPhone 5 still a bit not correct as the light there is yellow spotlight rather than brown.
More Xperia Z .253 ROM - Camera test out:
For me it's simple, the superior auto mode on the Z isn't very good at all. It gets the white balance completely wrong. I think it's the auto setting for white balance, it doesn't seem to work. The camera focuses better when you select the right WB. Taking and posting auto shots of the Z does the camera a great disservice. The Xperia Zs camera right now, simply cannot function well as a point and shooter until Sony fixes the WB in auto mode.
For now, you've got to use normal camera and adjust the settings manually. It's straightforward, only four options, incandescent for low light, florescent for strong artificial lighting, daylight for clear blue skies and cloudy for well, as the name says, when the sunlight is obstructed by clouds.
As far as I'm concerned, fixing the auto WB issue as well as improving the quick focus would have done more to improve the Zs picture quality than the removal of image processing algorithms. For me, it did a lot of work cleaning up the pics. It certainly needed better and more intelligent implementation but that's all. Doesn't need to be canned.

No X-Reality for our xperia z?

A interview of the engineers behind the xperia zu posted on sony's blog..
What experience does “X-Reality for mobile” offer?
Kosaka: ”X-Reality for mobile” incorporates the knowhow of the super resolution technology “X-Reality,” in Sony’s BRAVIA TVs, into mobile devices.
X-Reality™ for mobile analyzes each image and reproduces lacking pixels to optimize quality for the sharpest videos. It analyzes elements depending on the scene and adjusts them based on pattern, outline and colour composition. It strengthens subtle patterns and accurately portrays their detailed feel, as well as reinforces bold outlines. It also enhances colour composition, vividly reproducing hard-to-display natural colours
You mean “X-Reality for mobile” can recreate the data that was once there?
Kosaka: ”X-Reality for mobile” is based on the “X-Reality,” incorporated into Sony’s BRAVIA TVs. However, it is unrealistic to use the exact same video processing chip found LCD TVs in a smartphone for various reasons such as power consumption. The distance that users view smartphones at also differs significantly from LCD TVs. This is why we developed and incorporated a super resolution processing technology, unique to Sony, that is ideal for smartphones including our new Xperia Z Ultra.
The super resolution processing of “X-Reality for mobile” analyzes videos one frame at a time, estimating and complementing any lost information. At the same time, it combines suitable video processes for each frame and applies them. Such video process patterns are stored in a database, and the most suitable pattern is selected for each various scene from the database and applied, thereby reproducing video quality infinitely closer to the original.
The super resolution technology, which estimates any lost information from videos and restores it by combining various processes, can be said to be a fruit of Sony’s video technologies. Each and every one of the process patterns stored in the database has been created by an internal development team in Sony, operating on high-performance workstations. By storing complex super resolution processing in a database, “X-Reality for mobile” enables you to enjoy high-quality video reproduction real-time that would otherwise take a few days.
With the adoption of the high-performance Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 800 quad-core processor for its CPU and graphic chip, Xperia Z Ultra has made it possible to perform super resolution processing that had been difficult to do thus far.

if sony wants the z to have it the z will have it
its all a question if sony wants
That's true - if sony wants to, they will give it. But there are some facts to be said - the Xperia ZU that is now launching hasn't got the X-reality onboard but will get it with an software update. So for this part is seems that the X-reality is software dependent. Which is a plus in considering that Xperia Z might get it as an software update as well.
Secondly, with the Honami leak of apps I tried a mod with X-reality on my Xperia Z - and you could really see that it worked cuz if you quickly zoomed in on a photo you saw the image getting sharper one area at a time. So as far as I'm conserned - S4 pro chip has no trouble handling X-reality. And I didn't notice any more battery drain than otherwise..
So yes, in my view it's only really a question of if sony wants to give it to Xperia Z.

Can you really say that you can see superresolution in videos? I don't think so. But from what I can tell, video looked super awesome with X-reality for me. I saw difference between on/off X-reality. Was it just BME2 behind or was it super resoultion? I don't think that anyone can tell that just by viewing a video because it's not the same as in pictures to see it happening before you.
If I was a Sony executive of anykind, I'd vote for to give Xperia Z/ZL/ZR X-reality even if had to be limited in it's functions just to keep the software among 2013 devices equal (and to stop the hype in media/XDA )

This is what i took out of the article , it clearly states its only "super resolution processing" and that cpus before werent capablepreviously, yeah sure the s800 is 30-40% more powerful, but that still leaves the fact that the s4 is still half capable of processing it, its just whether now they want to implement it in ONLY their new phone, so it looks like a new feature specific to that range is anybodies clue. but thats how i see it , interpretations may differ

General consensus on the 'x-reality' engine

Just wondering what peoples general thoughts are now the phone's been out for a while in terms of the display with x-reality enabled.
I've found it hard to notice TOO much of a difference, and I'm aware it doesn't 'work' with 3rd party movie apps etc etc. But what intrigues me is reviews for the xperia z1 compact (and z1, z2) are EXTREMELY polarising concerning it.
Some have said it's helps and adds 'pop' and sharpness to colours whereas other reviewers have de-cried it and said it should be the first thing you switch off.
Opinions?
X-reality engine just adds more sharpness and contrast.. But sometimes it also increase noise in video.. Sometimes it makes unreal color too

More contrast, vivid colors - I like it when I'm showing photos from my holidays and trips to someone else, but that's good we can easily disable this function
I find it only helps when you are watching something where the original media's resolution or quality is not up to 2014 standards.
So using it on the more recently compressed files have minimal effect. In another words, your full HD downloaded video won't be helped with this on.
But heavily compressed files can look better with it on. I pick and choose my moments when to use it, because resource wise it is not free, at the expense of battery usage.
Usually I prefer MX player, since it covers wider range of codecs...

Thanks ! didn't know.

Can someone that has the Z2 answer a question about the X-reality engine?

Ok, so I currently have a GS4. I'm looking to upgrade, and I've had the Z2 in my sights for a while. I've been reading up on it, and read about how you can root the phone and install the Xposed framework in order to use the 20 and 15.5mp options while in Superior Auto. This is a HUGE plus for me. However... I also heard that if you root the phone, you lose the X-reality engine.
Coming from a GS4, I like how my pictures and such on the phone are a little saturated, due to how the colors "pop". (Granted, it's not NEARLY as saturated as my old GS2.) My question is, how do images on the screen look WITHOUT using the X-reality engine vs having it on? I don't want pictures I take to look dull and lifeless on the phone.
It looks real.
First, keep in mind x-reality enhances the color saturation when viewed on the phone, so the picture itself isn't altered.
Coming from a GS4 (which I did myself) some pictures can still look a bit on the flat side, but I would personally say both the pictures and the screen on the GS4 were just more saturated.
The Z2 produces excellent pictures for a smartphone, and if you really need the extra pop, you can easily use an app like Pixlr to crank up the colors.
1. Images without X-reality still look awesome.
2. If you are going to root. There are ROMs like RomAur that has X-Reality working.
3. Yes, there is an Xposed mod that does that. Cheers!

I love it. The things I miss are the IR blaster and the thin and light weight of S4.
I never really used the IR blaster, so I'm not too worried about that. As for the size and weight... I will probably miss that. Is the Z2 awkwardly large coming from a GS4?
