I've been trying to connect a card reader with Nexus 10 using a OTG cable but I can't seem to get it working . I have tried stickmount and USB OTG helper and both show a popup when I connect the card reader but in the ES file explorer folder is empty. Same setup works fine with my LG Optimus Pro. I am running stock rooted ROM.
Any suggestions?

I have had similar experiences with my Nexus 10. I can read and write USB thumb drives and hard drives formatted fat 32. As far as SD cards, I have had occasional but inconsistent success reading them but I have never been able to write to an SD card. I also have used the same mounting apps you mentioned.

I have not tried USB drive but even it works fine, it would be useless for me because part of reason for buying Nexus 10 was to use it to view pictures from my DSLR.

With your last response defining exactly what you are trying to achieve, that is reading sd cards filled with DSLR images, my response of yesterday does not apply. I can read this type of sd cards in a reader via an OTG cable if I use the app, Nexus Media Importer to mount the sd card. Using that app, I have successfully and consistently been able to read 4, 8, and 32 GB cards that had jpegs along with Canon and Olympus raw images. The app also has a viewer that will display the images on the card. It will also allow you to transfer your images to your Nexus if so desired. On the Nexus, your Gallery app and other main stream apps I have tried will only display jpeg images so if you shoot raw, you would have to view them on the Nexus with the Media Importer app or install a raw viewer app such as Raw Droid. I didn't originally think of this app as it does not allow root folder file reading and writing which has always been my as of yet unachieved goal.
Wayne,
Thank you for the suggestion, I installed Nexus Image Viewer ( as it was free) and I was able to see the pictures from the SD card.

While still waiting for my unit. Anybody use there Iconia together with a Digital SLR on the field photoshoot?
So far only for viewing. The CF files (shoot both Cr2 and JPG) are readable through a USB memory card adapter.
Don't think you can tether for remote shooting like a PC, no Android app from Canon.
Sure wish I could color correct the screen!

I wonder if the DSLR can be connected directly via USB. But a card reader sounds a better option. Thanks.
I connected my Olympus epl1 to my Iconia with no problems. I used it to view photos and as storage when I ran out of space on the memory card. It recognized my camera with no problem.
My Nikon D70 connects happily to my Iconia A500.
I can successfully view & copy photos directly from my E-PL1, via USB starage connection.
Thanks for the reply. This is the type of device I have been waiting for to partner with my DSLR.
Can you view canon raw file on the a500? If so, what do you use?

I tried hooking a Nikon DS3000 up to my A500 this morning with a direct cable. Using File manager HD I was not able to get to the device as external USB storage. Then I used a memory card reader and got to the pics no problem.
I saw someone program a 'photobooth' style app for the I ipad, would be cool to have that with android. I'd be 2/3rds the way to having photobooth equipment to rent out to weddings, I'd just need a printer.

For canon dslr I use cr2 thumbnailer its awesome works perfectly to view and transfer, I would recomend not directly pluggin your dslr in to the tab, there's plenty of issues that could screw your camera up just use the card reader its like 5$ for one. Some devs could make bank off of developing things for dslrs i have plenty of ideas just can't create them.

Hhmm? Is it because the Honeycomb creates new folder when ever an external storage is plug in? (I noticed this when I plug in my flash drive while testing the unit in the store).

Your talking about when you shoot and it saves both jpeg and raw, I havwnt used it this week but if I can remeber you can transfer any saved file, the jpeg and raw should be next to each other since theyd have the same file name just
Just download it. Very small app, they just came out with it so expect updates.
Was wondering about everyone's thoughts about this new feature. Personally I think it's crap. I can't view/read ANY files from the sd cards unless I FIRST transfer them to my mac...GAY! Why can't we just mount the SD cards like the GS2???

It's due to the way that Ice Cream Sandwich handles the Memory. It's always live in the system. The only way to access the Memory is through MTP. There is an advantage of using such because it means that if your phone is formatted ext4 (speed increases if I am not mistaken) you can take advantage of that and still access the data. Both Windows and Linux support MTP, unfortunately Apple has not implemented such even though devices are starting to use MTP more these days.
For Further reading go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol
From reading the site, there is a 3rd party implementation, not sure how up to date it is, but you might be able to make it work.
http://www.wentnet.com/projects/xnjb/ check that out to see if you can enable MTP on your mac which would reduce the need for Android File Transfer.
Also it has been a while since I have used Mac but you might be able to use these instructions to install a Ubuntu supported MTP software on your mac through X11 (allows you to run linux software on your mac) http://www.humans-enabled.com/2011/12/how-to-fix-samsung-galaxy-nexus-mtp.html

Thanks very much. I'm looking into it now
Ok.. I am using the Android File Transfer program and I can copy individual files to/from my GS3 BUT I cannot create folders for some reason. Even with the +Folder button. The error message reads: "Could not create folder. Try reconnecting or restarting your device." (Obviously I have done both multiple times.
Any thoughts?

I can't get Android File Transfer to work with my Galaxy S3 running CM9 (or CM10, for that matter), either using MTP or using the camera setting. This is really annoying. Anyone know of a way to get it to work? I really wish that USB mounting still worked, so I wouldn't be required to use client software.
It works fine on my mac at work and I have a 5 year old macbook pro. It's not all that bad. I just use it to transfer files when I'm at work.

Does N7 only have single partition and that's why there is no USB mass stroage connection option and have MTP instead? Does this also mean when flash a custom rom, the wipe option will also wipe the entire "internal storage" folder?
My main questions is actually about the MTP connection with limited access. For example, I have GTA game installed but after connected via MTP, under andoid/data I don't see the com.rockstar.gta3 folder along with many other folders. If I open up any file browser on N7, I see all the folders showing but In my windows 7, I only see 9 app folders. Is there a permission setting somewhere so I can gain access to see all the files?

yes but usb is allot faster then wifi, so transferring movies and backups sucks via wifi.
I'm trying to copy across Titanium Backup files but only 2 files will transfer. My Nexus 7 is showing up as a Portable Media Player and using MTP. I don't want to use this method. Is there a way to see my Nexus 7 as a USB Mass Storage Device? I have tried the PTP although that limits even more files to view.
With the limited space on offer for the Nexus 7 I don't like being limited in what I can and can't transfer from it. I don't want to use WiFi either, it simply isn't as fast as USB and I don't want to have to upload all my information to DropBox or a cloud in general
Wait until you try to put a lot of photos on the Nexus 7 that must retain their timestamps. Due to the filesystem used and MTP all the timestamps get changed to when the copy procedure occurred. My Nexus 7 is going back because of this major design flaw.

Hi all,
I'm on the verge of getting a N10, just holding off a little longer to see if the 32GB version becomes available in the next few days (praying the 16GB doesn't go out of stock in that time).
I'm just wondering if when downloading files etc it gives you the option to save straight to the external otg storage? I don't mind getting the 16GB and using an otg cable for additional stoarge, but would be very handy if this is possible, ie does it show up in file explorer apps like solid explorer?
I believe you need to root the device to write to external storage, my N10 isn't rooted and reads USB storage fine. It just appears in esfile manager like any other but I cannot write to it.

I have always used "gallery" to view pictures that I have stored on my external micro SD card. This new ATT galaxyS4 doesn't allow it. It only displays pictures that are stored on the internal SD card.
I got root and use an app called "root explorer" is the only way to view the pictures I have stored, which is ok but there is no slide show function in root explorer.
I postponed the update that came in over the airwaves, but it processed last night while asleep. I don't see any difference except it's not rooted anymore. Gallery is still limited to viewing only the onboard chip that's full of bloatware.
Does anyone else notice gallery not seeing the external SD?

Storage and reading of the external SD card for pictures works great for me.
One thing to note if you are having problems with the gallery, is to reformat the SDCard in the phone.
I was getting laggy gallery images, and a high battery drain from the Gallery.
Reformatting the SD card cleared up all my problems!
When you open gallery, hit menu and content to display. Make sure all is selected.

If you use stock browser anything downloaded will go to external sd. Camera also asks you to save pictures on external sd when inserted, if not it can be changed in camera settings.

I stuck a different 32 gb class 10 microSD chip in the external memory slot and gallery started working finally.
So I assume the chip I've always used needs formatting sounds like.
Thank you for the feedback.
I have a similar issue as OP. I have a 64gb Sandisk SDXC, and it came straight over from the S3 and the S4 gallery didn't see my pix from the card either nor the music player see all my music. I have to format the card in the phone then copy everything over from pc to phone via usb for the gallery and music player to see what's on my ext card. Then the phone restarted by itself, and it says the sd card is damaged, then the OTA update came just in time, updated, amd magically the Sd card was fixed, now it only see select videos and images and still none of my music. If it's in the inter sd then it's fine.

It sure sounds like it. My chip still works, all I did was use the computer to format it.
The only way to tell is get another chip and put some files on it for a test.
It ticks me off they don't even populate the external SD slot with a cheap chip like they used to. ATT phones used to come with a one or two gigabyte capacity bottom dollar chip for free but alas they got even more greedy!

I used foldermount and moved the DCIM folder to the external sd, so all the setting have it looking at the mounted folder on the internal card, even the burst shots are stored right onto the external. the longer I've had foldermount, the happier i am with it. endless possibilities!
