/data corruption? Nearly softbricked.... - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Looking for an opinion and maybe issue a warning......
Was running crawrj's stock deodexed MF9 ROM with reverepat's ICS theme. Stock kernel, no other mods. Playstore kept bugging me for an update to Talk(Hangouts), even though I knew it wasn't installed. Finally gave in and hit update. Phone rebooted, at least attempted to, and never made it past the "Samsung Galaxy S4" splash screen. Hard reset, same thing again.
I was able to boot into recovery(TWRP 2.5.0.2). Tried to wipe cache and dalvik...FAILED. Tried to restore nandroid...FAILED. Tried to factory reset...FAILED. Tried to flash ROM...FAILED. Flashed CWM, all wipes failed, all re-flashed fail. Attempted to remount /data...FAILED. Bricks SHAT.
Re-flashed back to TWRP...asks me for a password??? Hit cancel, format data works! Reboot back into recovery, flash crawrj's ROM again. Sign in to google. Reboot once more......stuck again at splash screen. Same issues all over.
Bad data partition? Thoughts?

Use Odin and flash a tar file.

Yep, Odin back to stock, boot and do a factory reset in the stock recovery, flash cf autoroot in Odin, flash twrp 2.5.0.2 in Odin then ref lash ROM of your choice. Good luck.

OK, so factory recovery data reset seems to have fixed it.
For my own sanity and curiosity, any thoughts on what happened here?
EDIT: and thanks to GiantJay and ifly4vamerica for straightening me out. Phone is good now.

Galaxy S4 freezes when turning on?

I just rooted my Galaxy S4 (model SGH-I337 AT&T) (I have not installed any ROMS either) and I went to back it up once more in recovery mode but when it went to reboot, it froze. It booted up normally but then froze when the AT&T logo is spinning. I can take the battery out and turn it on but the same thing happens. When I go to recovery mode to reboot, same thing happens. I have wiped cache partition and rebooted, same thing. I have restored my 2 backups, one failed and the other the same thing happens, I have rebooted to bootloader but that brings me to a screen saying downloading... with a android guy then the only way to get out of that is taking the battery out. I have tried wiping data/factory reset but it fails while restoring data. Nothing is working! Please help. I am very knew to rooting by the way. I have Clockworkmod recovery too by the way if that matters. Thanks in advance.
I am going out on a limb here, did you do a factory reset within the recovery? If not, try that. should boot just fine, IF, you said, you have not flashed any custom roms yet.
Good luck.
If that does not work, please search ODIN, because I am afraid that is the next step.
Thank you.

Thanks for replying. Yes I did a factory reset in Clockworkmod recovery many times. Froze in the same spot. Then I saw a Youtube video on how to use ODIN and it worked perfectly. ODIN said "pass" but when it rebooted, same problem! Then I wasnt able to enter recovery mode, it just froze. Now I am able to enter stock recovery but still nothing is working. Should I try ODIN again? I am almost positive I used the right firmware too. my options in recovery are Reboot system, apply update from ADB, external storage,or cache, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition. thanks again for the help
now that you have flashed back to stock with odin, wipe data and reboot.

[Q] S4 Stuck on Samsung Boot Logo.

So I rooted, and installed SS. And on ROM slot 1 I installed GE Rom. Once finished I rebooted and now its stuck on the Samsung Boot logo.
Doesnt go anywhere else.
I have let it sit here. I am able to get into the stock recovery mode. I already tried to factory wipe.
Any ideas?

What is your recovery? CWM or TWRP?
If you did wipe data on TWRP, it'll cause you to hang at the Samsung boot logo, you have to reflash via odin back to stock. Check GE FAQ section (post #2)

Oh shoot. Totally ignored safestrap. I heard you could only flash 4.2.2 ROMs and not 4.3

Ive tried everything MF9/MJA stuck at boot

2 days ago i foolishly flashed to a stock rooted deodexed MJA zip from Cyanogenmod 10.2. (NO I DID NOT MAKE A BACK UP. I DID do a full data/cache wipe before i flashed) Things got really weird after that. Phone would not boot past the yellow sprint screen. I had a few different backups that must have been old so i tried restoring to an older Triforce MF9 backup that i had from 2 months ago. After that i was stuck on the triforce boot animation. I thought "maybe my kernel got mixed up when i tried flashing to MJA". Downloaded and flashed stock MF9 kernel NO LUCK.
Ended up using ODIN to install a factory stock .tar of MF9... same boot loop, cleared cache(this succeeded), tried clearing dalvik cache (but it failed). It booted up and YAY stock MF9 WITH ROOT. So after all the sprint bloatware loaded up i was prompted for an OTA 4.3 updated. I foolishly accepted. So my phone shuts down into recovery installs the update then goes to CWM and says "fix root? yes or no" i hit "yes". Since then NOTHING has worked.
I tried to ODIN back to MF9 again as mentioned before, nothing. I thought it may be a kernel issue, I found no info on the new MJA kernel. I successfully used ODIN to flash philz recovery.tar so now im on philz instead of CWM or TWRP. I attempted to flash the original stock rooted MJA.zip that got me into this mess, but no luck. I now can not get passed the "Samsung Galaxy S4 screen" (tried clearing caches, and battery pull too). Im downloading "KERNEL-SPR-L720VPUEMJA-1382157965.tar" & "SPR-L720VPUEMJA-20131030154609.zip" at the moment to flash with ODIN. Also i might add, it seems like any recovery i use, TWRP, CWM, Philz they dont fully install the rom .zip's. I hit "install zip from ext/sd-card" and its like a 2 second installation. NO MATTER WHAT ZIP I TRY. Kernels seem to flash okay.
I dont care about root, or knox. I just want my phone again lol.
Try going here

you need to try to install the Triforce MJA/4.3.1 kernal/MJA modem all at the same time. IDK what happened on the first try to boot loop you but once you updated the modem to mja you can't flash MF9 modem/kernel on top of it. Try that and let me know.

Recovery can't mount /system S5 bricked

TWRP can't mount /system. Phone is a SM-G900T 16GB
- Running the latest version of TWRP I tried:
- Wiping, repairing, and reformatting from TWRP, also tried formatting data. I get a unable to mount '/system' error message every time.
- Using Odin and Heimdall to reformat using a downloaded .pit, neither works. I ran Heimdall in Windows and Linux (ran as sudo and admin). I re-downloaded the .pit multiple times and tried a couple different sources.
- Installing CWM using Heimdall, and ADB. In ADB and Heimdall I still have TWRP and in Odin it removes the recovery completely.
- Fix permissions gives the unable to mount '/system' error message.
- Installing ROM from Heimdall and TWRM
- Mounting /system with or without MTP
How it happened:
I was running Cyanogenmod 11 with encryption and updated to 12. CM12 was running great, flashed GApps, still running good. I signed in to my Google account and downloaded IPcamera. While running IPcamera I got an email, the screen started going crazy flashing between the alert and IPcamera screen, I couldn't do anything so I pulled the battery. When I rebooted it was stuck in a boot loop. I booted into recovery, it asked for my encryption password as usual. The password didn't work. I tried several times. I rebooted and tried again, still nothing. I rebooted again and this time hit cancel when asked for the password. I wiped everything and got the can't mount /system error. I tried everything above, nothing works.
I can't download my .pit so there is more wrong than just the data partition.
Any ideas? I would love this thing to no longer be a really expensive paperweight. I really can't afford to replace this thing right now
Thanks for your help.

That worked!! I don't know why the stock recovery can fix it when TWRM couldn't. It worked though. Thanks a ton!!

This didn't work for me every time I wipe in TWRP it just never installs the packages, or upon restart it just doesn't mount system. Wipe repair on TWRP doesnt work either

I'm totally with you on wipes and package installs randomly failing on TWRP, but I have no idea why. Sometime in December, I made the switch to Philz CWM, and I haven't looked back since.
At any rate, it is always good practice to odin back to stock, use the stock recovery to do wipes (factory reset and wipe cache), and then odin Philz CWM or any recovery program of your choice.
If you're planning on loading Lollipop, then you might just download the latest from Sammobile, odin the stock and wipe, and then load your custom recovery.
Best of luck,

I have a G900W8, there's no lollipop version for me. What phone FW can I flash and retain phone signals etc.
Captian Double post Double post here.
I'm going to snap my phone in half, it's been over 13 hours of trying to fix this. How does no one else have this problem?
EDIT: YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSS I FINALLY GOT IT TO WORK > I HAVE NO CLUE HOW <

Boot Loop! Please help me restore to lollipop quick!

HELP
So I was flashing the MOAR ROM and think I messed up. I was on Optimal Lollipop and used NI2 flasher to get to safestrap...Then instead of just wiping or doing advanced wipe I also did "format data" or whatever the bottom right option is when you are in the wipe section of safestrap... Anyways I then flashed this ROM and then the OC4 kernel and now I am in a bootloop. Samsung screen for a few seconds then reboots
I need to get this fix within the next hour. I have my PC with odin if someone can give me some guidance without linking to a thread about restoring.. I am hoping I don't have to go all the way back to Nk2 or whatver it was and then root all over again...please let me know how I can get back up and running quick!

ah good idea..didn't whatever I formatted like completely wipe everything..including safestrap and root access and EVERYTHING
If this doesn't work I know I can go the long way and start back at Kitkat and root again but that will take some time...could I just flash the OC4 or OD5 FULL firmware? One flash in odin just to get a usable phone for the night...and then tomorrow flash back to kit kat and start from scratch

I am more trying to figure out what went wrong...I just flashed the NK2 kernel via odin and I am now back in safestrap...
Previously the order I did everything was.
-Boot to safestrap
-Factory reset
-Format Data
-Flash ROM
-Flash MOAR ROM
Then the boot loops started
what should I do differently now that I am back in safestrap? I thought formatting data wiped EVERYTHING including safestrap and all that
**EDIT**
Tried a simple wipe data and getting
E:UnMount unable to find partition for path '/'
Updating partition details..
E: Unable to mount '/ss'
Full SELinux support is present
and then it repeats
ugh
do you know where there is a full Lollipop firmware I can flash..like all in one

Just do what you should have done. Don't format data. I don't know what you we're coming from as far as firmware but Factory reset, flash Moar, not knowing everything, it might not hurt to reboot to download mode after flashing Moar (through safestrap) and flash the firmware Moar is on. You have down that you flashed two roms. You can only flash one.

Sorry just in a rush so I was typing quick. Here is everything
I was on Optimal ROM (OC4)
I used NK2 Flasher to get to safestrap
Did a factory reset and accidentally formatted data
Flashed MOAR and then the OC4 kernel then started bootlooping
Taking your advice I quick flashed the NK2 kernel via Odin and got back into safestrap
Now after I factory reset it looks like it worked but there is also an error mentioning something about "E/ blah blah something not found"
I ignored it and flashed the MOAR ROM
Flashed OC4 Kernel
Rebooted
Now it's showing a tornado in the ocean and has been for 10 minutes...possibly a boot animation?
do you know what exactly happened? what does format data delete? I thought it would wipe the entire file structure of the phone removing safestrap and root which it somehow didn't?
last thing..if this doesn't boot. Do you have the link for the OC4 or OD5 FULL retail file to flash in odin? Isn;t there one file to get it back up and running for now

Just OC4
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23991606952607153
But if you are going to do that you might as well go to NCG so you can root
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23991606952607139
your not in a bootloop
Deodexed ROMs like MOAR and Optimal take 15+ minutes on first boot.
Give it some time!
