[Q] Do Samsung dialer codes work on fakes? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm going to check out a used 9505 today, and I want to ask if the dialer codes work in fakes, because I thought this might be one good way to tell if it was fake or not.
There are a ton of fakes around this area, even in stores, etc. so I want to be safe. I thought about the obvious things like the appearance, but the dailer codes I thought would be a sure thing and maybe check download mode and recovery?
What suggestions do you have to spot a fake other than this?
Today at 3PM I'm heading to meet the seller. The price is right, not too low to arouse suspicion, but decent. He says it's new.
Is there any way to check total service time/on time in the dailer?

Ususaly not, install CPU Z if you can on the device and look for the CPU info. Fake ones have a MTK chip instead of a Qualcomm.

[Q] HD2 LCD screen

Hi everyone!
I got some questions but first off I'll go ahead and give the background story of everything.
I bought my HD2 about 2 years ago, now when it finally got payed of (20/01 -12) of course I dropped it for the first time ever and the lcd screen totaly 'died'. I have always loved this phone, but to send it to an repair-store is not an option as it costs 1789 SEK (Swedish 'krona') -is something like 269,03 USD. Not much maybe but for an 2 years old phone, thats too much. /Money I rather spend on a new phone..
Tomorrow I will most likely go and buy the Galaxy Nexus, but still think the HD2 is worth saving, what im thinking of is to order an LCD and try it myself. If I make it worse well, then It wont matter.
My questions:
* After searching for LCD's they say "..for model T8585"
- I guess all HD2 (exept T-mobile maybe?) has this model-nr..? On my box anyway its say T8585.
* Some stores that also say "for model T8585" also say "only US"
- Well, I guess they dont mean "only shipping in US" as its the same store/site that sells other not saying "only US". Is this model-restrictions and how will I know the screens will 'fit' my Leo?
* Is there anything else I should look for exept the model number (T8585) to be certain that it will work/fit ?
Also I will attach a picture of how the screen looks like turned on so you maybe can tell me if I need to replace more than the LCD (Digitalizer/touch screen)
I saw another, old, topic about this but the picture was gone and I guess he could see and then thereby use his cellphone to test if the touch-screen/digitalizer worked wich I cannot.
Might be hard to tell, I dunno..
-If anybody know an reliable store/site that ships to Sweden that sells screens or right screen you would make my day if you could provide me with link.
-Also if they dont/or if you dont know -ship to Sweden; please provide link.
Another question that doesnt have anything with this topic (other than I would have needed this 3 weeks ago ) if there is somewhere to find an Otterbox case for HD2? I know they dont support Leo no longer but I will purchase it for the Galaxy Nexus also so would be nice if it could be found for HD2 also.
Thanks in advance!
Edit: And yes, I have searched the forum. All I find is dead links, non-helpful etc etc.
Oh thats not so good
I dropped mine a while back and cracked the screen big time. Decided id repolace the digitizer but it was only when i got it all apart that i found i needed more expert knowledge than i possess to put it back together. Which all meant another £50 to buy a digitiser/lcd combo. Theres plenty on ebay, such as http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110758732279?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
You could always ask the question about whether this is the right model for you. They should be able to help.
Its a bit of a faff to fit the new screen, but if your in the middle of a contract and cant do an early upgrade it is possibly an option. Or just get another one if you can upgrade....

You should buy whole combo(LCD+touchscreen) in order to do a fine job(it will be much easier for you this way, with good quality in the end). Doing like this it doesn't matter what version/type would be (US or whatever), 'cause they are interchangeable: some rumours indicate US version to be better by quality.
Ebay could be a source for you...
Good luck!

How can one choose combo assembly?
There is one for T-Mobile HD2 and one for European HD2.
This one says that its for T8585
http://www.ebay.com/itm/120745779165?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Is T8585 only european? Or are they both(T-Mobile and European) marked as T8585?
Is this one compatible with european?

Yea I had the same question but then saw something somewhere saying that T-Mobiles version of HD2 is slightly larger (longer or wider -dont know exactly wich -or both) and therefore I will go for one that is stated for EU-model and would suggest you to do the same, depending on what type of HD2 you've got.

Very weird i9500, dont know what to do, plz help :/

Ok, so my mum bought a i9500 online for $590 it was supposed to be brand new and sealed in the box, but when we received it, it seemed slightly used, and it was in chinese... So I went to the settings and changed the language which helped, but not really as the play store and everything else was still chinese apart from menus and what not. Not only this, but I open up the camera app and the camera is absolutely horrible, extremely blurry and laggy, and the front camera is even worse... I know what ur thinking, its a fake, but its really not, im 100% sure of it, exact same design, beautiful amoled screen, extremely fast and responsive etc, its a samsung for sure. Sooo I contact the guy and he tells me he had no idea and that it was a gift etc, he offers to refund me $200 and i keep it, I say no etc etc etc and eventually he refunds me $450 and I get the phone. Not a bad deal, as I figure I could probably fix this... given time. So I try and get cyanogen on it so it is english and maybe the camera works better... and that is why im here. This phone is completely fkd, I dont know what to do with it, I enter recovery mode and it gives me a menu completely different menu from what every other tutorial shows. I cant get Odin to recognise the phone, keis wont even recognise it, it only shows up as a USB mass storage. I think I might be able to flash a new firmware onto it through the recovery menu, but all the firmware for the i9500 is in some other language because its an international phone, so theres no point in trying that. Can someone plz help me here I have no clue what to do with it?
Sad to hear.... but ur Phone is duplicate and its Chinese..

Most likely is a fake. Get your money back.
Most like a fake one. post a photo of device info + photos of device itself?
My condolences
It's definitely a fake S4!
This is one of the reasons that I never purchase electronic gadgets online, including SmartPhones. Nothing beats peace of mind, not to mention you will be able to examine and scrutinize the merchandise personally before buying it.
Just charge it to experience and be smarter next time. Your goal now would be to retrieve your hard-earned cash. Getting back 2/3's of it is better than getting nothing at all.
always try to buy things using paypal, as paypal really helps you out when you are scammed.
yeh i eventually figured it out because i did a quadrant test and the CPU was dual core. I am stunned that they could pull of such a convincing replica. I bought it off ebay, the seller was in my region (australia) and sent straight from there so i figured it cant be some chinese fake. Anyways the seller is giving me the whole money back so its all fine, thanks for the help

[Q] Changing IMEI of the Nexus 4

My brand new Nexus 4 got stolen within a week of buying it while traveling in Bombay. I was hoping to get it back after lodging a police complaint and they assured me it will get traced using the IMEI number. But recently I have came across many newspaper articles saying that the IMEI number can be changed using software's from the internet.
If such is the case, aren't the IMEI numbers useless in the first place?
The new IMEI number doesn't make the phone unstable or make it share its IMEI number with any other phone?
Can phones with changed IMEI numbers be used with regular mobile networks?
Modern technology isnt making this impossible?
Can someone well versed in these issues answer these questions?
Thanks
I'm pretty sure changing the IMEI number would be illegal.

So is stealing the device in the first place! The thief won`t care for that. As discussions about changing Imei numbers are not allowed on XDA that doesn`t mean there isn`t some dark app/software around to change the Imei though.
Is illegal and you would have to have some sort of access to be able to change it

there are many softwares avb thru which the IMEI can be changed. But adding extra digits to the IMEI number or having two phones with the same IMEI number not make the phone useless? can the telephone companies not read these type of phones?
In India the success rate of phones getting recovered is merely 2%. There are many shops in seedy places where thieves can get the phones wiped or get the IMEI changed. Manufacturers need to come up with better solutions to prevent theft or make the phone unusable once stolen. If they expect people to buy such expensive phones, it wouldnt hurt them to make them more secure and in turn safe guarding our costly indulgence.

I'm sure it's possible for them to make the phone trackable as long as the phone has charge. Eg, a small chip that is ALWAYS on to enable 24/7 GPS tracking.
Although that's nice, people would complain about privacy. They would say the manufacturers are tracking them and soon there will be some illuminati or political war going on with the manufacturer.
Is it possible? Very likely.
Will people like it? Yes and No.

Thats a good idea. and Privacy-shrivacy! People who make a big deal about privacy should pay everyone who loses their phone and then cant track it.
Also, manufacturers have done away with a tiny slot that you could used to tie a cord around. I feel tying your phone to your trousers is the only way not to lose your phone in India. We are packed like sardines here when we use the public transport and thats the only way to secure your phone.

Wouldn't be surprised if they're already doing that, atleast American carrier locked phones. But then it would be detected by engineers by examining the motherboard? Although it's not necessary with network and software capability like Carrier IQ and Prism.

Pretty annoyed by people who keep whining about privacy as well. Germany is probably the worst worldwide right now when it comes to such people. Like a while back, when they all complained about Google Streetview and set them back via lawsuits and politics several times. Now it was only passed when people were able so request their houses(!) to be pixelated. I mean srsly, it's not like it's their faces or licence plates, it's just some outer walls, every one can see when driving by themselves! Anyway, that's why there isn't much Streetview going on here right now (Google probably got tired of it). And it's just one of many annoying examples.
But back to topic: I think Google is doing some good first steps in the anti-theft and recovery direction with the Device manager. Now it just has to work for me...

Nope. I actually don't like "big brother" tracking me down.
So what if you can track it? I might be able to track it down to a condo, so how are you gonna know who took the phone?
I doubt the police would make a raid JUST FOR A PHONE.
Yes I know, I've been to India. Yep, I agree on this one. I do want a strap.

If they were, engineers would see it.
No, with software it's easily wipeable. If the nexus 4 came with a tracking app named TRACK (for an example) , I can just take the phone, wipe it and install cyanogenmod on it. There you go, the app "TRACK" will be gone. Software side would be useless. If i'm not mistaken cerberus suffers from the same problem. It's a software. I'm sure you can wipe it.
Bottom line is, unless manufacturers make a HARDWARE that lets you track it, there's no full proof way of tracking it. Even then, it's hard to convict someone of stealing your phone.
In case you're thinking that I don't understand your pain of losing a nexus 4, trust me when I say I do. I lost my nexus 4 IN SCHOOL about 2 weeks go.

The point is to make stealing phones difficult. If the police raid a couple of times, the thieves would think that its useless stealing phones, since they get tracked and would discourage them from this practice. Till the someone found an IMEI loophole, im guessing phone theft would be on decline too. For eg: Modern cars. Since the chip installed in the Key. Car theft has gone down considerably.
Also, were not really upset upon losing your Nexus 4? What steps did you take to get it back, if at all?
I was hoping mine would get recovered eventually. But i have lost all hope.
I wish the thief gets slow roasted in hell.

Real or fake

Hey guys was going to buy an s5 from my daughter for Xmas off a third party, how would I make sure its real and not fake any help would be great cheers
Don't do it. If you must study the real handset and lookup fakes online. But seriously it's worth paying extra for a genuine new unit. Do you have a link for this third party?

If you had bought it, use this app to check if it is genuine or fake:
Phone INFO ★Samsung★ > Menu > 'Refurbishment Check'.
You should also compare the IMEI and S/N on the box, in the app and on the back plate (behind the battery). They should be all the same.
Also use a bar code scanner app to scan the bar code on that back plate, and it should match with the IMEI.

Hi, first just like to say thanks for your above guide to buying second hand phones.
I have another phone that interests me another S5 But this guy seems very genuine he said that i could check anything I want on the phone there and then. Only thing is no box it was damaged by his kid brother, seems like a nice guy. Do you think I would be O.K if I just went by your above guide?

On a different note wouldn't it be handy for truthful sellers and truthful buyers of phones to make a transaction without the fear of being scammed Surely in this day and age there has to be a way to do that Would a transaction through the likes of paypal not be a better idea? I just mean how would you get a buyer to give you the phone to run all these checks on it before you have even gave him the money. And then from his point of view how could he trust you with the phone without money, you could be doing anything to it, I mean is there some info on a phone that could be dangerous for someone to have? I guess that's why people say not to buy second hand. But these phones a very expensive a specially for teenagers so that is why its nice for parent's to get them for a better price then at least they can mess around with rooting and flashing I mean £300 is better than £600 not to mention bringing them to school they are so often stolen but hey that is just my opinion.
This website has good details about the difference between real and fake S5.

weird delivery from staples

Boght fire tv for someone from staples I was hoping to root it .. nope it had newest firmware and was updated on Dec.2 too bad... but that's fine.
It shows there were 2 remotes used 2 serial numbers (one is the one I just activated) and other one.
You guys think they sent me used one? or it was simply opened to update? everything looked brand new though..

I did it has shown "Rootable" and when I opened I saw it was updated on Dec.02.
Should I complain to staples about this? what you think?
I got around the root modules etc.. I needed so it's fine without root for this particular fire TV.

You should returned it asap, if the store accepts the return that were bought online and buy another one, just make sure it is one of those serial number and serial number seal is not broken.
Or just walk in to a staples buy a new one that has root able serial numbers and then go home open i andt put the other one in box and take it back to store and say it is defective you cant connect to internet either via wifi or ethernet so they will send it back to Amazon and wont re-sell it. Since the amazon device it self does not have any serial number labled that matches with the box there is no way they can confirm which one you giving it back....
Thank you

I will call them soon.
Just called them and the lady said just to go to the store and swap it and pack it how it came and just bring a receipt..
So now I need to find out how do I factory reset thing thing lol.
Thanks guys !
People should stop believing that anyone can tell if their fire tv is rootable by looking at the serial number, cause its impossible. I got three fire tv boxes at different times and none are rootable, but the decoder says they are. its just someone trying to take a guess and there are zero facts to say otherwise. Its funny how some people will believe anything that they read. I personally think that its a crap shoot, and that they update the boxes themselves, but sometimes they do not have the man power or time to get around to doing all the updates so some people will get rootable boxes and some won't. At least that is what I was told by more than one person that works there that I personally know, and I'll believe them before I beleve some crackpot that thinks he has decoded which can be rooted by looking at the serial number. I live less than 40 miutes away from Amazon in Lexington KY and its not uncommon to know a few people that work or have worked for Amazon. So I am beyond positive they are right about why some boxes are rootable and some are not, since they are on the inside, so they seem 100% more legit then a crackpot. Especially when different people, that actually work there, have told me the same exact way that they update fire tv boxes and why some boxes do not get updated.

Sure it will not always worked but the decoder is just guide not 100% guaranteed but if you get one of those serial number, you have better chances that it will have root able firmware but you wont know until you actually see what is actually installed on the box
Personally, i am just thankful someone took time out to put the guide out there for free.
However, if someone is in the market i would still try to buy a box with one of those serial number. I bought 2 and they both were root able.
thank you

You are totally out of line calling AFTVNews a crackpot after all he has done for the FireTV community. I remember your name from the i717 forums and you were negative there too. Please don't bring it here. We have a great community of respectful and helpful individuals.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717
^^^ +1
Take your negativity else where. AFTVNews put a lot of time and effort into the decoder and everything else they do. Sure nothing is 100% but something is better than just a 'Crap Shoot' on it's own.
I actually just checked the serial number on aftvnews just because I was curious... but my fire tv was indeed used so I am going soon to exchange it (staples said I can do it there)
Update: store didn't have it in stock staples already sent me Return label (told me to ignore it lol ok)
have to go another store soon. Apparently they have 2-3 in stock.

Got a replacement today from staples store!
status: rootable!
Controllers: only "1" the one I just activated.
Thanks for all suggestions!
The truth is only negative when someone cannot handle it. That is not my fault. When someone does something and says it is fact, but then states that it is not 100% confirmed for every device, then its not factual, period. I am beyond positive that his crackpot method is beyond flawed. Sorry if you cannot handle me saying it.

It even says on his site that its not 100%. And you can't believe what someone who works at a place says either. Unless they actually work doing wat they are saying then they could be full of ****. People like to make up **** for the departments/sections at their job that they don't do them selves and then it spreads to other people until people think its fact. I use to deal with that type of **** all the time.
