I am getting video stutter in the new YouTube app, namely when the overlay(for pausing, rewinding etc) comes up. Even changing the volume brings up the overlay, and causes the video to stutter. For reference, I am on PA 3.96 with Trinity kernel TX3. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
EDIT: It also only seems to happen in full screen.

It also stutters on my s4...

It's also happening on my Kindle Fire, so it's not device specific. Kind of annoying.....

I confirm that's a problem with the new app, firstly I thought it was a connection issue but on my One X with the old version everything goes well..waiting for a fix

I had an annoying issue where it would hang about half-way through a video and become unresponsive. I was able to narrow it down to certain stagefright and TCP/IP tweaks. Once those were eliminated I haven't had any issues. Smooth as silk.
Where are the resolution options 360/480/720/1080?
I think that hd is not supported and for sure it is not 1080p
There's a lot of issues with the new app hopefully they'll be ironed out.
Weird, my mom's note 2 youtube app is not stuttering but my s4 is.
Uninstall the update from Settings >> Apps >> Youtue >> Uninstall Updates
Should fix the issue for most people until a new update is out.
On Samsung TabS T800, youtube stutters at any resolution and framerate despite "FORCE GPU RENDERING" is enabled in the developer options, cpu usage is low, and no other app is running.
BUT
IF I call the CARDBOARD view in the YouTube options and then return to normal 2D view motion is then butter smooth up to 1440p60, for any video!
If closing youtube and restarting it, it is stuttering again.
Clearly hardware if fine (cpu, gpu and OLED is great!), but google/android/youtube is bugging !

Videos played by my nexus have an odd choppy feel. Every five seconds or so, the player pauses for a very noticeable moment, then continues. Is anyone else experiencing this?

No problems regarding smoothness.
The only problem I have is that nothing seems to have audio (using mxPlayer)

Yes.
Is it a background app causing it? I read about a few phones having this issue in the past.

I'm on 4.1.1, not rooted and I've noticed the same problem. When playing a video or certain games every 5 seconds or so there is a slight pause. I've tried different video players and still the same issue.

Having the same issues but it seems to happen more with games especially tegra 3 games like a riptide. the funny thing is is I swear I remember playing riptide and It had no lag. I can't remember whether it was prior to the 4.11 update.
Same here! I tried watching the Transformer movie we got for free and it kept freezing up! This is irritating, I'm going to try a factory reset. I'm exchanging this thing any way cause the headphone jack is defective.
From my long awaited and totally worth it EVO LTE!
Same issue here after upgrading to 4.1.1. Anyone here having this issue on a custom ROM? If not then I'm flashing a ROM ASAP.

Try other video players (MX Player, BSPlayer)
Was this apparent before 4.1.1? I just got my 7 yesterday and updated right away and do notice the stutter w/ my high profile 720p vids. On my Prime stuttering was fixed with over clocking and running an interactive governer.
Edit: this is for 720p high profile movies stored on the device, happening w/ dice player and MX player. Don't use stock since it doesn't support ac3 audio.
stock n7 with latest ota updates, unlocked and rooted. No problem playing any game and video, either stream from play store (transformer movie) or stream my my home network.

It doesn't matter if it's on the device or not, it happens when I stream the transformer movie and/or any YouTube video. I'm about to return this back to Google if I don't find a solution soon. Going to try a data factory reset and see if that helps.

Yeah looks like its happening for me on YouTube as well.
I just put a video on my device from my PC and it played fine. But if I stream anything it plays like crap

Did some more testing. Tried the stock player and no stutter but no sound due to no ac3 support. I have another 7 coming in on Monday and will test that one leaving it as is (before 4.1.1 update)
I just got off the phone with Google and they said it's probably a issue with my router streaming media on the device. I'm going to test another WiFi connection sometime soon and see if the issue persist or not.

I'm having problems with this, I can't watch a single video on this device without the lag. I've tried the youtube app, Netflix, dice player and a few other video apps and everyone of those lag.

The developers of XBMC have released a preliminary version for Android, and it works great on the Galaxy note. you can download the test build here. (http://dl.miniand.com/miniand/xbmc-android/xbmcapp-armeabi-v7a-debug-20120714.apk).
I have tried it on my note and it works great !
Going to test it now.. love xbmc on my computer

higher resolution videos stutter/lag a bit because it is software rendering ( hardware should be enabled by the time it gets to play staore) but I think it is a great start off the bat.
No hardware acceleration :S 1080p videos looks slow, even on the S3
It's an alpha. Nuff' said.
Getting audio bug today.. video playing bit no audio

Could someone please test this for me. Make sure the video is playing in HD and look for every so slight choppy playback in the video. You will need something action packed.
Cheers!
mine is ok it depends on the speed of your connection.

Maybe I see it more then you do? Try using SmartTube from the app store. Plays a lot smoother and 1080p . It also allows you to set the video quality from 240p to 1080p and everything in between. Sorted out all my youtube playback issues.
Haven't encountered any problems.
The linked video also works fine (after waiting for it to load, slow internet connection).
Is it choppy for the entire video?
I.e. do you get this just for some videos, but then it's for the entire video, or does it happen just for part of the video?

Yeah all videos but heres the kicker. Using an app called Smart Tube I have no issues at 1080p playback. Perfectly smooth! Using the stock youtube app is choppy for me.
Hey guys,
Got my device and after factory reset tested the preinstalled youtube in HD and it played great.
After updating it, I noticed these annoying stutters in HD (possibly even in non-HD).
Then, I uninstalled it (back to default system Youtube) and the issue disappeared. This can actually be reproduced and resolved in that manner.
Can anyone tell me if he can reproduce this?
Thanks in advance.

I am very, very sensitive when it comes to video quality and stutterness.
But i never noticed any at all with the updated youtube app on my 801

So my problem is that, when i play a video in the youtube app and i drag down the video into the corner and begin scrolling the list of vidoes, it begins to stutter. Now the video itself plays ok, and it seems to happen on 720p or 1080p resolution. What do you guys think? And btw I'm on stock 5.0.1. No root no nothing.

i tried lollipop, even with custom clean roms, it lags, more than kitkat, my guess is that the firmwares right now arent that good, i am using cm12 right now, and its so smooth, you have to wait for better firmwares...if they exist....
