I have a 2012 nexus 7. When I go into the the about tablet menu in settings theres no update button/check for update button. i'm on 4.2.2 and i've heard android 4.3 fixes the lagginess of the device. My nexus 7 is unlocked, rooted, and running AOPK. I think AOPK might be the problem, but otherwise I have absolutely no idea why the update button isn't there.
Also, I know virtually nothing about android, so if anyone has solutions, please use basic step by step instructions and explain any advanced terminology.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
You need to manually install Android 4.3 when you're on AOKP. CyanogenMod and ParanoidAndroid are both already based on Android 4.3, but you may also choose to install the stock factory images using the guide here

Thanks for the help, but my nexus 7 has caused me nothing but grief for the couple of months I had it. So i did some stuff to it trying to fix, knowing, yeah i'm gonna brick this thing. and I bricked it. or it could be the battery died... not sure yet. But I figure at 250, i'll just give Asus another chance and go out and buy the new version.
thanks though.
Well I guess i could have fixed it...
stock factory images, didn't catch that part... my god that article would have helped a lot, then i could re-root and re-install AOKP. Oh well, it's not like the tablet actually did me any good, i spent more time screaming at it then actually using it. *Sigh* I knew i should have waited a couple of months and gone with a Tab 3. Call me crazy, but i just freaking love touchwiz.
Anyways thanks again for the link... knowing i could have fixed if i had the patience left with the stupid thing makes me feel better... the lag was just so bad, i heard it was almost a lag apocalypse with the 2012 nexus 7s running 4.2.2, after I bought the thing of course.
Thanks again.
Strange that you're talking about lag so much. I don't experience any, or at least not enough for it to be really noticed.
The lag was so bad that I kinda wanted the thing to die
It's all over the net about how the 2012 nexus 7s are virtually unusable due to lag caused by 4.2.2. Not all of the devices running this version of android have this problem, but unfortunately a heck of a lot of them, from what I can tell, do. It just pisses me off because A: in essence this should be a fairly powerful device, with tegra 3 processor and a gig of ram, it just should be... but mine at least isn't. And B: this is the device I got to try android for the first time, I'm more of an apple guy myself and it's especially unfortunate that i was essentially just handed a bad nexus 7 in this particular scenario. Technically I'm the one who broke it completely but still... Lisa, or whatever her name is, in one of her mobile tech review videos on youtube said they had a nexus 7 without any problems... It's sad though because I really wanted to like the stupid thing, I mean it had really good build quality, and coming from me that's high praise, and the price point was amazing... I can't imagine google was making a ton of money for such a device going that cheap.
Thanks again, I more than anything just wanted to rant!!!

I'll find a guide on how to flash 4.3 on the stupid thing, and if that dosen't fix the issues i have been having with it i'll sell it
Sticky at the top, how to flash an image using fastboot/return to stock. If that can't help you, there is no helping you.
Sent from my Nexus 7(2012) that has zero issues.
I have access to the bootloader so i should be able to do it via the windows command line, right? In any case, i'm going to wait a bit and learn more about android so i don't completely screw my chances of fixing it.

It's official, after being on Android since its inception, I officially HATE the vibrant and I HATE Tmobile for not having phones like the EVO or Incredible and giving us that crappy HD worthless 2. I've had so many issues with this phone. And now the frustrations continue and I give up.
I flashed Eugene's Vibrant5 and the damn lag fix and rebooted my phone only to find that:
1. My entire voicemail box was erased and I had several unheard voicemails from today. I have to set my voicemail box up as if I never had one. I've never had this happen before and I don't know what on earth gives but i'm irritated
2. Now Windows 7 does not recognize my device so I can't get into ADB to flash JAC's Kernel. I went through a lot of frustration yesterday to finally get Windows 7 to recognize the device and now I'm back to square one. I refuse to go through the same crap to get Windows 7 to recognize my device, I installed the latest drivers so that's it, f*ck this phone. Who makes a phone with no L.E.Ds and a piece of sh*t battery life anyway???
I HATE THIS PHONE!!!!!!!!!!
So, you hate the phone because YOU took the risk of modifying and now you don't like the results?? Flashing your phone has nothing to do with your voicemail since your phone doesn't host voiceemail box, so not sure what you did there.
Did you research the phone before you bought it? Hope your within the 14 day window to return it.
Cya later then.

The voicemail thing is a Tmobile issue, not the phone. It's how Tmobile has decided to implement VVM on android. It's lame and happens even if you had gone back to a completely stock rom. You shouldn't have lost your messages tho, just install the app and refresh your inbox, they should all be there again.
As for your other problem, are you using Windows 7 64bit? For some reason there are issues with some 64bit Windows 7 machines and the Samsug drivers.
I've got 2 computers running 64bit one works perfectly the other some things work some don't. I have several other Windows 7 32bit systems and they all work without any issue. I think this problem has been mentioned in several of the Odin threads for what it's worth.
Sounds like someone got over their head with different MODs to their phone and can't figure out a way back. Complaining about a phone because Windows won't recognize it sounds like you have a problem with Windows and not Samsung. Maybe you ought to flash the stock ROM and wait for more "user-friendly" MODs to come along. Day by day I am slowly not wanting to even look here for info on my phone due to moronic posts like this.
I'm with tweak on this one... Sounds like you're angry at the modifications you've tried to apply and failed at. The lagfix is a beta mod thats extremely risky since it uses EXT2 format and the data can be easily corrupted if the phone powers down abruptly. The stock vibrant is a very fast and stable phone (I came from a Nexus One and i love the vibrant).
Are you sure you "set up" your visual voicemail app? I find it hard to beleive the phone some how "deleted" your VM's. that just doesnt make sense, since they're not even stored on the phone. try dialing 1.
Good luck with your next phone.
No one cares. I don't get why people randomly rant.
Ill buy it for the $100 its on sale for today through tmobile. Pm me!
Bye bye, have fun with your new sheep phone ...

No it's not Tmobile, I had flashed another rom and went back to stock using ODIN and my voicemail was fine, it only happened after I flashed Vibrant5 and the lagfix. I've had a lot of issues with this phone since day one so I'm obviously majorly annoyed. I know how to get back that's not the issue, I'm really annoyed with the phone in general, it's a great upgrade from the MyTouch and design wise I like it a bit better than my Nexus one but MODing this thing is irritating, I've never had issues with my Nexus, MyTouch or G1 so it's not me. The samsung drivers are just lame. I prefer using ADB and it's just really annoying. I have 3 other phones and I can easily sell this one for much more than I bought it for, I paid $109 corporate discount and I'm tempted to put this b*tch on Craigslist for $350 and I know it would sell today. But then I'd be left with my nexus one which I like but am bored with, I modded the hell out of it already, so I don't know, I think I'm just going to switch back to my Nexus one until my stress levels decrease.

I've got 2 Vibrant's beside me as I type this. I've tried several different versions of the lag fix as well as a few of the roms (deodexed, Vibrant, etc) on both. EVERY one of them requires VVM to be re-setup as does the stock rom if/when you revert to it via Odin. In every case your messages are still there once you have reloaded/re-synced the app. Not sure why you would consider that something to blame the phone for, it's part of setting everything back up after a flash as far as I see it.
P.S. If you don't think part of the problem is Tmobile, go check out a Droid or Droid X and see how different and better integrated VVM is on those devices.
P.P.S. For clarification above I meant to say everytime a new ROM is flashed, I've never had to re-setup VVM for the lag fix etc..

The only issue I have had so far is that my time zone tick does not stick when I reboot the phone so everyday I have to re-untick it so that the time dont change on me when I drive into Texas, which I have to do 5 days a week for my employer. Other than that it works perfectly on Windows 7 64bit here. Still wish we had linux support though. lol

Yeah, for that price I would also sell it, but I would turn around and buy a new one. I LOVE my Vibrant. All it really lacks is Dev support and it sounds to me that is your only real issue also, crappy drivers and lack of dev support. My GF loves her Evo, so you should probably change carriers and get one of them instead. Oh and my brother loves his Incredible to, both are very nice phones.
good luck

vibrant is not a bad phone...its a REALLY good phone, does everyhting i need it to...
So basically what I get out of this is your upset because you don't know how to install drivers on Windows 7 and that the device is not fully mod ready from day one? HTC Android devices have been here since the start (G1), that is why there is such high support and why the turn around is so quick for them to be modded. The Galaxy S series is Samsungs first "real" attempt at a powerful Android device. ADB works fine, learn to install the drivers. The only real issue with the device is the GPS which is already been acknowledged. Also voicemail is hosted not stored. Installing roms and modding your phone does not affect your voicemail. God I hate stupid people, mods please delete this thread.
OP your best bet is to get an iPhone and leave us alone - thanks.
Its been what a month or so since the phone has been out?
If you where truly here when the G1 first hit then you seriously can not talk about frustration.
I want to know am I the only one that does not feel the need to root this phone. I mean I come from a g1 day one buyer mytouch 3g the g2 a nexus one, and I lived for installing roms just like everybody else I was flashing everyday lol. But on this I just don't want to I mean it's sorta perfect. I mean the no notification thing I hate. The samsung on back I hate. And a camara in the front that I can only use to look at my self what the hell is the point. how many pictures of my self can I really take? But the phone, the hardware gingerbread it perfect. What do u guys think?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I certainly don't feel compelled to flash any custom roms or kernels on mine; it's damn close to perfect. There's a few CM or DocRambone extras I sort of miss, but it's nice to be off the ROM-A-Day or ROM-A-Week treadmill I'd gotten on with my Nexus One and Galaxy S phones.
Root, though, that's a much different story. There are still things you need Root for that I don't want to give up:
Screen captures.
Titanium Backup.
adb wireless widget
Not to mention just the feeling that it's my phone, and I should have full access to the file system if I want it.
You shouldn't feel pressured to root, though. If the phone does all you want and you're not missing any of the features root gives you, don't bother. No one will look down on you for it...
I can't live without Titanium Backup and other various root-required apps, so I definitely have to root. Plus, it's not like it's a complicated process.
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
I don't feel like rooting mine either, at least for the moment. I feel mine is pretty perfect too. Considering I came from a G1 with Froyo and constantly lagging and taking 30 seconds to load the home screen, I am completely happy with my NS.
Rooting is mainly for tweakers who like to customize beyond the norm. I can't think of anything substantial it would provide me personally to do so. A little bit faster? Meh. Better battery life? Meh. HD video? Meh.
Yes its a great phone, but to purchase this phone and not tweak on it, that I will never understand...

I'm sure most will end up rooting it, but as it is right now some people don't feel the need since it's still quite early in life.
Honestly the only reason I rooted was to get rid of ads. Some of the other root only apps like Titanium (get rid of google earth, email (I only use gmail), etc) was nice but not needed.
I haven't decided yet if I am going to do ROMs although I probably will eventually do CM.
I totally felt the same way, until I found out my received MMS pics were compressed and thumbnail quality/resolution. I had to root and replace the Mms.apk, now it works fine.

Ahh, that's interesting. I don't use MMS, but I've read numerous threads where people complain of the compression. I suggested they try Handcent or other 3rd party app to see if problem addressed, but most seemed to think it was a T-Mobile server setting.
What apk did you use to replace it with?

Could you point me to where I can get that Mms.apk? I'm having the same problem. Thanks
I hadn't planned on rooting as quickly as I ended up doing....but waking up one morning to see that my stock device was bootlooping for fun caused me to rethink that one.
I still don't plan on flashing another rom, at least not yet. This is the first device that I've been happy with from the get go, and I'd like to keep that feeling for as long as I possibly can.
As fun and beneficial as rooting is, it'd be nice to get a "Google phone" with clean Android iterations already packed with all the features that rooting brings.
If developers can create better custom ROMs, why can't Google make these implementations themselves? It's a little baffling to me.
I think everything is ok on this device but I will still root because I love the freedom!
I also haven't thought about rooting, I used to flash new roms like 5 times a day on my faithful g1.
The only thing that bothers me is the compressed photos I get in the messaging app. Hopefully they will fix that soon.

Hello! I am a Nexus S owner (for the second time now, had it back in the states then sold it before coming to Korea) Picked up an iPhone which I loved but after using Android on my Hp Touchpad, it made me realize how much I missed Android. I was going to pick up a Galaxy Nexus then realized they wanted 850 US dollars so I settled on a used Nexus S for 300,000 won (roughly 250 dollars) Its just like I remembered it, it feels cheap haha but I miss all the widgets and using the GO Keyboard on it is making the transition a lot easier. Also, the apps seemed a lot more polished up, I cant wait for Ice Cream, hopefully they roll the update soon over here. I'll still be bouncing back and forth to the iphone though.
What I really miss is my Droid Pro, anything with a portrait style keyboard is a-okay with me!
You don't have to wait for ics. Either update it manually or flash any ics rom. This is android, you can tinker with the phone whenever you like.

How is it BS?
I compared my nexus to a 4s and the colors were much more viberant on my phone but they arnt real.
For instance I edited a pic on mine, it was really hard because I was really adjectings the lightinds like a pretty bicth #based, but then I transferred it to my computer. And wow it was off. Didn't even look like what I was working with on my phone.
So yes we have nicer colors. But they are fake. Over saturated.
Im not even going to call it retnia because its LCD and we have olee. But I need higher Res for my line of work.

While waiting for ICS to be released on a google phone my frustration has led me to an iPhone 4S. The screen is much clearer (retina is not bs), the phone is faster, and the battery life is better. I hope ICS is released soon for the Nexus S 9020A or I will end up selling the nexus s. I didn't buy a google phone to wait for updates. I may be impatient, but it's still really annoying.

Where have you been? The official update was already updated a while ago. You are probably going to have to flash a zip manually though cause I've heard there have been issues directly from your phone. If you're going to flash a zip you might as well flash a custom one. They're faster, better, more settings and tweaks, did I say BETTER?!? . Go and check some out you won't regret it
I am not rooted and was against flashing a custom rom as I have to wipe my phone and lose everything. Anyway around formatting device but still unlocking and rooting?

Have a look here, should be able to do a non destructive root on GB. After you do that you can backup all your apps and app data with titanium backup and restore it after unlocking the bootloader. Just remember to copy over any files you need on your sdcard before unlocking the bootloader (particularly the newly created titanium backup folder).
Texts and call logs can be backed up with smsbackup + or the likes. Orr just copy the relevant files with a file explorer on the phone, can't remember exactly where they are though.
I didn't realize you could backup without root. Was trying to wait it out for the OTA as I was scared to flash ics and AT&T radio as I have never before but may give it a shot this weekend. Thanks guys.
Just opened up my new Nexus 10 - sealed in box, bought off another guy locally who happened to get 2 of them for Christmas (lucky guy haha, I believe it considering the neighborhood I picked it up from!)
Turned it on and it has a system update. Im one who tinkers, rooting and customizing etc... I rooted and flashed my Galaxy nexus within hours of opening it... and every android phone has been the same way. Im gonna try to keep the device stock for a bit though as I do have a handful of defects that people seem to be complaining about, but they're issues that aren't bothering me if functionality is fine
Issues I do have:
Inconsistent backlight - it is noticably darker near the camera at the top of screen
Strange buzzing noise from the back of the device.. "behind" the left speaker / near the power button corner.. It is definitely eminating from the rear of the tablet. It gets MUCH louder when the brightness is turned down (in fact I can't even hear it with brightness locked @ 100%, but it is really irritating with brightness at minimum)
And the device has a weird smell lol... this will probably go away though, might be from the plastic
Will updating the device make it harder to root the device for flashing purposes? Or is there any odd things from said update that I should know about before proceeding? I don't see any "DO THIS INSTEAD IF YOU HAVE XXX VERSION INSTALLED" type of posts yet so my assumption is no but I feel the need to ask anyway...
Thank you
No. The update will take you to 4.2.1 then you can proceed with rooting. It works the same no matter the version.
The update is minor so all the rooting techniques will work for either version. Every ROM available is using the latest revision, so I would suggest updating via play store before rooting.
To clear up any confusion, take the update. It's okay. It won't do you any harm.

This was definitely the opposite case on my HTC G2 (well not mine in particular as I heeded this caution) but G2's that were updated to 2.3.5 would have to force the device to downgrade to 2.2 before they could flash a rooted 2.3.x ROM
Samsung Galaxy S 2 - aka T-Mobile Vibrant - same story.
That was exactly why I asked
I rooted mine with 4.2.1 using mskip's toolkit before it was updated to support it.
There were instructions in the toolkit thread to just use the 4.2 image option for 4.2.1
It was a breeze.
Received the update to Android 7.0 NRD90M (from Preview 5) last night.
Wifi or LTE?
---------- Post added at 08:51 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:33 AM ----------
I enrolled my Nexus 9 LTE in the Beta program and got DP5 yesterday. Today I got the update to full Android 7.0.
I did the same (beta program) 2 hours ago for my N9 WiFi, received the full Android 7 and installed; then removed from beta with no need to reinstall all (I agreed to receive the OTA for a official Android version but nothing is arrived...).

not that i've come across but why would you need one? stock img is available from google
edit: you could even take the extremely lazy route (as long as you're on fully stock) and sign into the beta program for N, it updates almost immediately
My device is not recognised for the beta program. Any ideas why. I flashed the full version any way but just curious. Nexus 9 wi-fi.

It has nothing to do with being lazy... Lol..... It has to do with ADB. I know that I can use ADB and side load this from my PC using TWRP. But usually there is a rooted version out hours after Google releases a new OS. I was just checking to see of anyone made one yet. That's all. I see now that there isn't one so I will wait until one is made and shared. Thank you though for replying to my post.

Actually .. if you're waiting for someone to post a zip flashable version that's already rooted, instead of just flashing the files with fastboot, then flashing superSu, I'd call that pretty lazy too. Lol

Call it what you will. I am not going to argue with you. I already have it on and rooted, so I'm not lazy. I do video reviews and a large portion of my subs are new to android. I just wanted to try and find an easy to flash, one step process for them to follow but you cant even ask for something like that here without someone doing exactly this. Its a shame really and its no wonder that some people find it hard to enjoy this side of Android. Thank you again for you response.

Going to have to disagree with you on this one. If you are doing any of this stuff to your device, it's best you know how to fix it if it doesn't work out. IMHO, if you are on the Nexus line, you should be adb/fastboot proficient.
I can understand why people don't like responses like ours, but honestly the world has become way too coddled. People want everything NOW. Answer my question, I don't want to search. For the people who have been around for a while, that gets old. I have no qualms helping people out, but people are overly sensitive to everything. I'm not trying to argue either. Wasn't trying to come off negative, was just being playful. If that gets misconstrued as something that would make people not want to visit this site, then I say they seriously need a dose of reality.

Just don't bother saying anything at all then this thread won't get filled up with your disagreements... Or at least just private message them:good:

Agreed to disagree. I wasn't asking for anything right away or demanding of anything of the sort. I simply asked a question. I searched and did what was required on my part. And I didn't ask you personally for you're help. It was a simple question asked in general. Either there is a yes response or no response at all.
I have also been around for a while and am not new to this forum or android. I know the rules and before I posted I checked. All I'm saying is if there is no help or answer to my question, and there isn't, I go my mary way with no response and I keep searching on my own. I get it. Look at my posts, I don't treaty people like idiots. If I don't have an answer for a post, I Just don't reply. I am not going to waist my day in argument over something this trivial. I am sorry to have disturbed you or anyone one else for that matter in this thread and I sincerely apologize, it's just a shame that it's needed, but I'll respect that since I wasn't the one to start this thread. Again thank you for your reply.

Not replying has also had people come back to threads mad that nobody replied, lol. It's a dammed if you do, dammed if you don't type situation. *shrug* oh well I guess.

Just thinking out loud, but maybe you are not best placed to pass on your "knowledge" to beginners if you yourself don't know much/enough about the subject?

Got my update yesterday via OTA . I must say I am slightly underwhelmed by the performance now. Especially Chrome feels much more laggy and sluggish. Scrolling was smoother before.
Anyone else with the same experience?

I haven't updated yet, so I don't know if the following applies to N, and, since you took the OTA you're probably not interested in a custom kernel, and, I don't even know what kernels are available, but, what the hell, just in case: Chrome was extremely slow for me, too, until I installed ElementalX and set Readahead to 128.
