s4 mf3 root permission denied - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Okay, so yes I am a new guy, I have rooted my previous phones though. I have an s4 with the mf3 build, tried rooting it with the sd card (2g) formatted as exfat via Windows 7, also tried in disc manager in Windows. Copied Un zipped files over to card (card was in a card reader) and put it into my phone. Opened terminal, and on ./pwn I get the "permission denied" like everyone that Trys to do it in fat32. I tried to run ./pwn couple of times in a row to no success. Any ideas?

how about trying the root methods listed in the general section

....I did, from what I see there is only one method of doing it on mf3, which is the way I did it, to the t....

ah, but see, i had no way of knowing which carrier you were on, let alone what firmware you were running. that's the kind of information you should be posting in your OP.
have you researched the MF3 root thread to see if your answer is within those pages?

This is the att s4 section, and it says mf3 right in the title. Yes I have looked through the threads, tried everything I found with no luck. 99% of the time the answer to my problem is "format your sd card to exfat", but seeing as I am formatted in exfat, that solution does not apply. I'm curious if att did something else with the phone to block this method because I literally just got the phone (refurbished) on Friday, shipped from att.

I am in a similar boat to you. I got a new AT&T S4 to me after the OTA update. I have followed every single step in the new method for rooting the S4 on the MF3 OTA; nothing.
My SD card is definitely formatted to the correct format - even tried multiple cards.
Can't find a fix anywhere.

At least I'm not alone haha

I would make sure you're working in the right directory. My previous phone's /sdcard was actually the external SD card (as expected). The SGS4 /sdcard is internal storage.
tl;dr make sure you have the files in /mnt/extSdCard and not /sdcard or /mnt/sdcard.

[Q] Installed DexterMod 1.3

In installed dexter mod 1.3 but the firmware update for feb 4th did not update. do I need to install the 1.2 first then the 1.3 are am I doing something wrong. I followed all the instrustions.
No, you should not have to install any of the prior mods since the current mod will include all previous data. But you do need to do a wipe/ reset before applying the update. If not, it won't work properly. See the instructions for installing the mod on this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=890042&page=63 and make sure you follow each step. Hope this helps! Btw - refer to Dex's thread for future issues. Most likely, someone else will have the same problem you're having.
Dexter install
Once I put the sd card in and it starts it says something about bad and it can't open the file what do I do then I tried 3 times what am I doing wrong I wiped clean I clean the cache so I don't get get it
Trying to install 1.3 mod need help.
I instaled 1.2 dex mod no problems and now with 1.3 I tried three times with two seperate sd cards and three different downloads and each time the tablet could not find anything on the sd card. I forrmatted the card in fat32 and put the mod only and did the wipe and reset before attempting the update and each time it could not find it. I am going to rename it update only as update.zip or Update.zip are not recognized. After the wipe still shows I am using Dex 1.2.
Anyy thoughts?
Really liked the 1.2 mod and would like to try the new one.

1.3 still shows as 1.2 in the About screen, Dexter didn't update the build.prop ... This has been covered, dug up, and covered again.

What size file is your download?
I had an issue where my download was only a 63K file (and update would fail), it should be closer to 100MB. I had to start to download 1.2 first, calcel after is started then download the 1.3. I would cork correctly and downloaf the complete file size after that.
Double check and make sure your not having the same issues as I.
Goog luck.

Very odd TWRP Issue

Right, this is very weird...
I made a Nandroid backup (compressed) on TWRP for this first time, it completed successfully and then I powered off and turned the Nexus 4 back on. However to my surprise, I could not find the backup on my SD card. I checked everywhere (data/media...TWRP folder...etc). I even checked the entire phone (with root explorer enabled), nothing. However the backup was successful because my Available Space has fallen by roughly 1gb, the size of my backup. Does anyone know whats going on here?
Thanks in advance, really appreciate your support.

Hmm, unfortunately I don't get that. This is what I see.
Could it be because I am using a theme on my TWRP (the Holo one btw, which no one else has reported a problem on)...
Edit: Okay, I think I solved it...I went onto the root of the phone again this time, searched the data folder and was able to find Media -> Backups (see below). Why is that it appears here rather on the SD card data folder?

maybe because you compressed it? i dont compress mine.
Thanks for the help Simms, but after digging around on XDA forums, I found the cause and the solution (posted here):

There was a weird bug with TWRP that put the FIRST backup in /data/media/TWRP/backups (read: wrong). After rebooting the recovery, all future backups will go into /mnt/sdcard/TWRP/backups, which is where you want them.
Here's what I think happened:
1) Your first backup was stored in /data/media/TWRP which is not where TWRP looks for backups. So, TWRP showed no backups.
2) You ran a second backup which showed up correctly in TWRP, and was stored in /mnt/sdcard/TWRP/backups.
3) You renamed the most recent backup, and then checked /mnt/sdcard/TWRP/backups, and assumed the renaming actually moved the folder. I don't think it did.

[Q] Possible Write Protection Situation? Can't Install Nothing.. Need Help!

My friend just gave me a Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 and he told me that it has a problem and may I can fix.
I've tried everything I know but there is no any progress so far.
Here is the problem;
1. Device is not booting. Hanging out at the first logo (Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505)..
2. I thought it's a simple problem.. I can make factory reset and it may work.
3. I entered recovery and I've seen this;
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
4. The problem seems big than I thought. I thought maybe it may work if I put original firmware. Downloaded from sammobile and nothing changed. Then I decided to install a recovery.
5. I choose TWRP and installed it with these settings. Result on computer;
Result on Phone;
6. And tried to enter recovery, result was successful !!
7. Then Enter 'Advanced' > 'Terminal Command'
8. I just checked 'whoami' on terminal;
9. I can delete everything if I'm root right? So let's try.. 'ls' and get list..
10. Let's delete etc and efs folders. I have the power!
11. Let's reboot device, enter recovery again.. and let's see if I'm successfully deleted directories;
As you can see, device is always saying that Failed to mount /efs (no such file or directory) and more. I can only install recovery. And I can't delete or change anything else. Neither I can't install new firmware.
Do you have any idea? What is this? I want to fix this stupid situation.
I just tried to explain the situation with photos. Hope it wasn't boring.
Thank you for reading.
Have you tried with Kies?
Or maybe trying to flash a custom ROM?
Did you ask if he did something to cause this?
Edit: I once had an SD card which was broken. I could create/copy and delete stuff but as soon as I removed the SD from any device it was connected to, everything was back to it's previous state (deleted files were back and copied stuff was gone). I tried formatting but same thing happened.
Maybe something is wrong with the internal storage.
Try to convert to another file system format.

I've tried with Kies 2.6 and Kies 3..
Kies 3 says 'unsupported device'
Kies 2.6 just waiting waiting and nothing..
I couldn't put any files to internal storage.. Also it doesn't recognize any sd card.
I don't know how to change the file system?
I mean to ext4 or f2fs, or whatever.
I don't know how to do it either. I never had the need to do it. I don't even know if you can in this situation, but you could try. There should be several guides on the internet on how to do it. Just google it.
Does a pc recognize the phone? Have you tried pushing something to it via adb?

Sure it's recognize.. I'm able to install recovery with Odin.
But when you did turn-off and turn-on, everything is reversing.. Like never installed.
So it's basically exactly like the issue that I described about my broken SD card.
I think it may be an internal storage problem. Maybe it's broken. I don't see why or how something would trigger a write protection.

If the internal storage is dead then I don't think there is much you can do. You could try taking it to specialized service

[Q] Why would Dropsync/Autosync/Onesync not be able to write to emulated/0?

I'm having a strange problem with Dropsync/Autosync/Onesync on my GS4 running the "Mostly Stock NG2 v1.3" ROM -- I patched it to allow writing to the external SD card, but for some reason, even though the sync apps show the external SD card as writable, they don't show the emulated/0 folder as being writable, and the apps don't create their application directories as they normally should -- as a result, even though they can write to the SD card, they can't sync because they can't write to the device to keep track of what has been synced. I contacted the developer but he wasn't able to help me, besides identifying the problem is on the device storage side of things rather than a SD card issue.

I suggest you try a different ROM. There are a lot of important things missing in that ROM. Dialer chooses don't work for one. Almost any other NG2 ROM has the SD Card fix.

I had issues with apps writing to the external SD Card after the OD2 update. I'm running a stock rooted system on the SPH-L720 (non-spark). The solution to the problem was the same as the one I used with KitKat on NAE and NG2. You have to edit your platform.xml file found under /system/etc/permissions/
You'll have to add the Blue text below
Code:
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE">
<group gid="sdcard_r"/>
<group gid="sdcard_rw"/>
[COLOR="Blue"]<group gid="media_rw"/>[/COLOR]
</permission>
Weird, mine is already fixed. I didn't touch it.
My phone is not rooted. Can I still fix it? If not I need the best way to stock root. Sorry, but I'm new to this.

That is odd. I went back to full stock to take the OTA, rooted it with CF-AutoRoot and did nothing else with the system. I thought AOSP reversed the changes to the permissions with Lollipop but I guess Samsung may have done otherwise. I was surprised when I found Titanium Backup was having issues. Did some investigating and found the same issue that we all had with KitKat.
On a side note, I'm looking forward to a possible future Lollipop ROM from you and your Dev Team for the SPH-L720. I've run ROMs from your team in the past and you guys do great work!

Don't be sorry, we all had a point where we were new to this.
Unfortunately I do not know of a way to fix it without Root. Root is fairly easy to achieve on this device thanks to unlocked bootloaders. I wish I could walk you through step by step but there is a pretty good tutorial here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2257101
Thanks everyone for all the help. I hope I get this thing working soon.
Anyone know how to get rid of that annoying sound when booting up that happens right around the Sprint screen?
Well I got it Rooted, put the line of code in and it still doesn't work. I can't even format the SD card. I don't know what's going on with it. Any ideas?

And did you use an app like Root Check to see if your rooted?
I used twrp manager after I rooted. It'll ask if you want twrp to fix the sd card write permission and then you scroll down and apply the patch. All done.

How did you manage that? It's pretty difficult to hard brick a phone.
It would not start after reboot. Just keep getting white boxes saying each app failed to start.
