I'm not a total noob, I have been rooting and installing custom roms on my Xoom and other smartphones for about 2 years now and consider myself to be knowledgeable enough to go ahead and root my new S4.
Here's what's going on.
I'm having some major problems after rooting my S4 using djrbliss' Motochopper root method.
After rooting I installed Titanium Backup and did a complete backup of the device "all user apps and system apps" to a folder on my ext. SD card.
Over the coarse of a week I began to remove some of the AT&T bloatware.
I removed AT&T Navigator, AT&T Family Map, AT&T Mobile TV and AT&T DriveMode.
I kept MyAT&T, AT&T Smart WiFi and AT&T Messages for the time being.
I like using the Samsung Messages app more than the AT&T Messages app.
So I decided to uninstall AT&T Messages this morning and that's where all my problems started.
I started getting "Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped." messages constantly.
So I rebooted and I got the message that "Contacts has stopped working" and the same "Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped." Upon checking my contacts sure enough I would get a "loading" circle and my contacts would never load.
I then tried to reinstall AT&T Messages using Titanium Backup. I noticed that a system app called "Contacts Storage 4.2.2" was also uninstalled. But every time I tried to reinstall any apps I would get "Titanium Backup has failed to reinstall "x" number of apps".
So reading up on androidcentral someone said to do a Factory Reset, which I did, but now things have gotten worse.
The Samsung setupwizard keeps crashing and now I'm stuck in a virtual loop and can't get back into my phone.
I then downloaded the "[FACTORY STOCK] GS4 Stock Firmware Odin Package- Original Factory ROM" from that thread in an attempt to set my phone back to stock and hope that that will fix my problems.
I followed the instructions but when I get to step 5:
"Hold Volume Down + Home + Power until your device enters Download(Odin) Mode, then press volume up."
the phone does not go into "Download(Odin) Mode". Is Odin something that has to be installed on the phone first?
The thread never states this.
Please any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Odin mode is download mode for all intensive purposes. Odin itself is a computer program although there is a mobile version (mobile version doesn't currently work on s4)

The tread was written for the S4.
Did you already try restoring all your user and systems apps from your tb backup?

What? AdamOutler is a reputable dev with a wealth of knowledge. That is in no way a bogus thread. Mobile Odin does not work on the S4. That is an Odin application that is self inclusive on the phone with no need for the computer. From what I read it requires a custom recovery to then write the stock images. We can't do that at the moment because of the locked boot loader and chain fire needs to update the app as well.
Odin (the computer version) is what is described in the thread you mention. That requires a computer for the program and a USB cable to be hooker to your S4. Be sure to follow all directions in the thread to a "T" for this process or any for that matter

I hope you figure it out man... as a rule of thumb, i always disable first and then remove after i can prove to myself the phone is stable for a few days.
Have you tried just using Kies to restore the firmware? I had the same issue after doing a factory reset through the phone settings.
Here is the link to the guide on doing the Kies restore.

If you still want to do it with Odin... To get your phone into download mode you hold down Volume Down and the Home button. Then while holding those down you press the power button until the phone vibrates and then let off only the power button.

Yea, that's what I should've done.
Should've freezed first, then deleted.

Then what is AdamOutler talking about in his thread?
He doesn't say anything about needing to have a custom recovery installed on the S4 first.
I have followed the instructions to a "T", and when I get to step 5 the phone does not go into Download(Odin) Mode.
Do I need to do step 6 before step 5?
What am I missing here?

You need to read what I write more carefully. I discussed mobile Odin in the top portion and explained about the recovery being necessary to use that.
The PC version of Odin does NOT require a custom recovery, unlocked boot loader or any of that good stuff.
As for steps do as he instructs. When you get to 5 and 6 where you seem to be having trouble, hold the button combo until you enter download mode, hit volume up to continue and then plug the micro USB into your phone (cable already plugged into PC before hand). Your device should be recognized by Odin

Thanks RandomHandle:
Your detailed explanation on how to hold and release the buttons was able to get me back on my feet.
The only difference is that the phone doesn't vibrate when you hold all 3 buttons down, the screen just goes black.
After it goes black I release the power button and keep holding down the volume down and home buttons, after a few seconds then the phone vibrates and then goes into downloading mode. I didn't use Kies, I stuck with Odin since I spent about an hour downloading the ROM.
Phewwww!
I was scared that I was going to have to go into the AT&T store and play dumb to try and exchange the phone.
Although the big unlock symbol and the word "Custom" underneath it would have shot me down.
:victory:

Hi Mike on XDA,
Random handle was able to help me out.
It's the way you press the 3 buttons that was hosing me.
AdamOutler needed to explain that just a little bit better.
You have to hold volume down + home + power, wait for the screen to go black, then release the power button only and keep holding down the volume down + home for about 5 seconds more, then the phone will vibrate and enter "ROM Install" mode. That's when the phone will warn you about installing custom ROM's, you then press up to proceed into "Download" mode or volume down to cancel.
Anyway after getting the S4 into "Download" mode I was able to reinstall the AT&T stock ROM and all was well.
Just a note: After re-installing the AT&T stock ROM your phone will be un-rooted again.
I was trying to root my S4 using the video and downloads provided by QBking77. That did not work so I tried to update Samsung software.
I got a message saying the software has been downloaded and will be installed. Clicked yes and now all I get is a black screen with recover booting on the upper left hand side corner.
Please help.
Go do some research on Odin. I'm not very knowledgeable in this, I came from HTC, but I think Odin can help you.

Thanks for the quick replies guys. I dunno what I did but somehow its working again. Pulled out the battery and still the screen with Samsung Galaxy S4 and recovery booting showing on the screen. Pressed the power off + volume down + home screen button and was somehow able to restart the phone which seems to be working fine now.
The problem is I dont know what happened there? And if its safe to go ahead and update the samsung software or not?
Any clue? Any advice is appreciated.
Sounds like a typical update fail to me. It will most likely do the same thing if you try again.
I have a client's Atnt galaxy s4 that will not boot up normally and will not boot into recovery also.
when i try to boot into recovery i get the blue lettering in the top left and it just sits there i have let it sit for sometime like that with no change.
this is not my first go around with flashing android devices so please even give me Dev only options if that is what you think will fix it. i feel bad because he just bought this phone 2 weeks ago and cant use it. not sure what the other guy that tried to root it did and neither does he so i am shooting in the dark so any help would be great.
I have tried flashing the stock Odin package with no luck.
Also tried Kies Firmware upgrade with no luck
Most of the custom recovery for this phone from what i read are not flashed threw odin anymore, but if i am wrong please link me and i will give it a shot.
Dose anyone have any ideas someone told me to use the .PIT file and re-partition the device and reflash the stock odin package. but i have had no luck locating the .pit file for the I337 galaxy S4 could anyone grab it from there phone and upload it for me or any ideas on how i could possibly fix this issue.
Thanks in advance
Since you already tried ODIN, why don't you try KIES.
I tried that allrdy just forgot to add it to the list updated first post
Copied this from another thread, guy was having same issue.
EDIT: Problem solved by scott14719. Here it is: As soon as you feel the phone vibrate, immediately let go of the power button but continue to hold the other buttons until the recovery boots, then let go of them.

ok i will have him give it a try

if the os isnt hosed just download goomanager and install the recovery then download a touchwiz rom that has an extended reboot menu, you can then just boot into recovery from the OS.

In addition to letting go of the power button after the vibrate, here are a couple of other things that appear to have worked for other forum members. I didn't discover any of these fixes, I just did a lot of reading and saw where others have had similar problems and found ways to solve them. That is what makes the XDA community great:
Uppercuticus said:
I've had this happen to me several times while playing around with flashing. Basically (without fail in my experience), hold power+volume up+home as you'd normally do until you see the booting recovery message and let go. It will do one of two things - boot into recovery- or - restart and vibrate-. If it restarts and vibrates, immediately hold power+volume up+home until the booting recovery message pops up again and let go. It should then boot into recovery and you shouldn't have trouble in subsequent attempts.
It took me a while to figure this out and I actually thought I had permanently bricked my phone as the phone wouldn't boot and I couldn't get into recovery. Hope this helps.

After using ODIN, make sure to do a software (factory reset) to get rid of any data and settings that stayed behind. The firmware packages that we have for Odin, do not wipe everything on their own.

here are all the details;
Rooted ATT Galaxy S4 MK2 with Busybox. all went well until I tried to flash and boot into recovery. Installed ClockworkMod Recovery, tried to reboot into recovery...permission error. Installed Team Win Recovery, same problem.
investigated... Superuser.apk for some reason is NOT present in app directory. hmm. checked for root, have root.
installed ClockworkMod Superuser from play store... asks to update superuser... fails with signature error.
There seems to be no way to flash this phone. I have the original backup I made with ClockworkMod but restore fails with signature error.
The phone works fine, has root but I am concerned I will not be able to update to 4.4 when it's available. I am also NOT able to flash any alternative ROM. frustrating.
I see there are relatives to this issue all over xda but as far as I can tell after a weekend of trying is there's NO WAY to boot into recovery with write permissions being allowed.
I was messing around with my phone getting trying to get the annoying "insufficient storage available" notification to go away, I was able to by going into the internal files then deleting the app data.
I rebooted my phone and now I'm stuck at the yellow sprint logo. I went to recovery mode did a factory reset then tried to wipe cashe and a dead android appears with a red exclamation point. Then it reboots and goes back to the yellow logo and freezes there.
Help!! I don't have a computer at the moment, and no clue what to do!

I won't have access to a computer for a couple weeks. Do you know how sprint would handle this issue? I don't have insurance but I just got the phone a month ago.
If you can get into stock recovery mode - Power+Home Button+Volume Up. Try a 'factory reset'.
If that doesn't work you can always take it in and say you what every you feel is okay (phone stopped booting or whatever) and see what they say.

I got that as well on my N10. Stock, stock recovery rooted. Booting into recovery didn't help. The next morning it was the same thing, but after a while it shut itself off and when I was ready to flash a stock img, had the USB cable plugged into the laptop, I look at the N10 and it's booting just fine, then starts applying the update.
Not helpful I know, but just wanted to let you know it fixed itself, I did nothing. Good luck.

Okay, something pretty similar happened to me twice now. I'll share what I saw and did.
Unboxed brand new n10 and immediately went through the process to unlock and root it. I did *not* install a custom recovery.
After a couple of hours playing, it prompted me to install an update. I *think* it was actually on 4.2 before and this was the update to 4.3.
Applied the update and it rebooted and went to the "No Command" screen. As others stated, it felt very stuck.
I eventually gave up and figured it was soft-bricked so I use the Nexus Root Toolkit to download and install a factory fresh 4.3 (v). Lost all my customizations.
Fast forward to this morning. It prompted me for a new update to 4.3. I made a full backup using Nexus Root Toolkit and tried it, but again, it just got stuck on the "No Command" screen.
This time, I tried pressing all three buttons (power, vol down, vol up) quickly, but it did not bring up the stock recovery screen until I actually pressed them in order, (power, vol down [next to power], vol up [farthest from power]). At that point it brought up the recovery menu and I selected the option to wipe cache.
It took a while, but after wiping, I rebooted and it went straight into Android without a problem and it *looked* like it finished the upgrade. Oddly, it still reports it is 4.3 (v) rather than 4.3 , so i don't know if I ended up aborting the upgrade or if it was just trying to re-install (v) for some reason.

When you cleared cache you lost the update package I believe, so it didn't update, when I received my OTA I had TWRP installed and it went through nicely. Maybe you should try it and then installing Stock Recovery again.

Good luck.
