[Q] 4.2.2-4.3 battery difference? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Before, while running 4.2.2, usually cm10, i had been getting just barely over 3 hours sot, so not bad, it was acceptable for me. Now, after flashing 4.3 roms, and the new bootloader, Im struggling to get even 2 hours sot, even with lighter than normal usage. After going to 4.3, if i flash back to 4.2.2 roms, I now still get the same awful battery life. Generally, to go along with the 2 & 3 hours sot, my total time off charger is between 8-10 hours off charger.
My question is does anyone else have the same big difference? Could it have been the new bootloader and any new firmware i may have flashed along with it?
With how i spend my day, (I play Junior Hockey), up about 8am, light texting, snapchat, Instagram, while connected to WiFi, then about the same usage until about 6pm, keeping light usage, i drain completely with 2 hours sot.

Try calibrating the battery, go to the play store and download an app called battery recalibration, follow the instructions in the app, and you should be good. I noticed a definite increase in battery life from 4.2.2-4.3 so, you should be fine.

Stock battery life survey

After using CM 10.1 for the last two weeks and loving every second of it (including the unbelievably impressive battery life), I regretfully had to return to a stock ROM to avoid outgoing call audio bugs that were interrupting my phone's use for my job.
Out of curiousity, what kind of battery life is the typical stock ROM user getting? On CM 10.1, I was getting almost 4 hours of screen on time with 40ish percent battery left by the end of the day. What can I expect with stock TW?
There's a thread somewhere in here that talks about battery life and I'm seeing most people get between 3 and 5 hours of screen on time. A few people have horrible stats at around 1 or 2 hours, a few get 6+, it just depends on what you have installed, sync etc, and how you use your phone. Personally I average 3 1/2 - 4 hours on the stock ROM with Gmail, Facebook, Instagram, and a few other small things syncing.
Im running stock rom rooted with awesome battery life 5+

Battery life of nexus 10 after updating to 4.3?

Guys, how long is your battery life now? Is it getting better?
I'm on my third cycle of charging after getting it recently. Updating it to 4.3 and rooted it too.
Current, the SOT is about 5 hours and I'm expecting it to be better.
Wifi connected all the day, mostly for browsing and so.
How about you guys? I've read a few with 11 hours SOT. That's amazing!
Nexus4 modded with cyanogen.

Funny you say that, my first charge after 4.3 I only got about 5 hours SOT. Since then it's got much better though, I rarely let the tablet get too empty on charge but I tend to use 50% of the charge (according to the battery meter) in about 3.5-4 hours. Ditching Chrome for AOSP browser helped my battery life a fair bit too I noticed.

Yeah, Chrome really hammers the crap out of the CPU. It's got a nice interface and syncing and all, but it's slower, less responsive to touch and uses more power than the AOSP browser...
My battery life is about 5 or 6 hours in 4.3, on stock rom and cyanogenmod :crying:
I went through two charges on 4.3. My battery life was awful, I'd get about 5 hours of SOT at minimal brightness. Flashed back to custom ROM/kernel and I'm back to 9-10 hrs.
Gonna wait for 4.3 to mature before flashing back. Nothing I would use was implemented anyway

What custom rom do you use? Gona give it a try.
My battery life is nice. I with moderate-heavy usage it's surviving from 8-10h . Running Stock Rooted Android 4.3 ROM
I only get about 5 hours too. I'm on stock rooted 4.3 with custom kernel. Thought kernel would help but not much... This sucks!

[Q] Screen on time?

Hi!
I have a relatively new Nexus 4, which I got NIB about 6 months ago. The battery life is ok for a phone with these specs, it easily lasts 1.5-2 days, depending on usage. But my screen on time is really bad: I rarely get more than 3 hours, usually more like 2-2.5 hours when reading emails, Twitter and Facebook (no games). Everything is fully stock, I have very few apps, and other than really bad screen on time can't complain.
Reading about people having 4-6 hours of screen on time, I wonder what I could do to improve mine. I'm so upset because of this issue, that started thinking about selling my Nexus and buying a Motorola I would appreciate your suggestions!

Depends on who you ask. Some says flashing a custom rom will help, some says flashing a custom rom with a kernel, and others say just a kernel. As far as the best option, you will have to experiment to find the best configuration for you.

Are you saying that 2-3 hours of screen time are normal with stock ROM and I shouldn't expect any improvement?

There are the usual fixes:
Turn off as much syncing as possible
Turn off location / bluetooth / nfc
Turn down brightness (although auto is relatively smart)
Beyond that, not sure how you only get 2-3
You can try apps that monitor battery usage more closely to get a better idea of what is actually draining your battery so quickly

Well, it would seem that the screen eats the battery, as I only get very poor battery life when the screen is on, otherwise the phone lasts ~2 days on a single charge with WiFi, 3G and GPS on. The brightness is set to auto, but I still get only 2-3 hours of screen usage with really simple apps (Chrome, Twitter, sometimes Facebook) and then the battery dies.

2-3 hours of screen time is normal.
You got to take into consideration;
this phones battery is NOT big, its small.
This phone has an LCD screen, the power is going to run out much FASTER than OLED screens.
Be happy you get 2-3 hours. Some people can barely get one.
I get 4+hour but with 6 hours total battery time. I can also get 1 1/2 days of light usage.
This phone isn't going to give you 5+ hours screen time on top of 12+ hours of battery life. Its just not gonna happen.

For the most part, I don't keep up with the amount of battery life because my phone and tablet is never too far from a charger. Although I have watched the battery drain while charging when I watch a lot of videos on YouTube tho.

You might try a custom kernel that's optimized for extended battery life. You'll get small but noticeable improvement, just don't expect miracles!

Uhh, I see. Thank you, guys!
Looks like my Nexus will be replaced with a Motorola after all
I get about 4 hours of on screen time with moderate gaming with CM rom.
Biggest difference compared to stock is that a lot of the services that run on stock are not installed or turned on.
Apps that constantly check in email/facebook/etc.. can drain things as well. Increasing the interval between checks, or disabling it altogether and just doing it manually would help.
BetterBatteryStats can help you narrow down what is giving you the biggest drain.

i can agree with you: my girlfriend and me got both a nexus 4. she has to charge her phone every day when she comes from school and also get not more than 2,5h screen on time. her phone is completely stock and loaded with a lot of beauty-apps, lol.
i rooted my nexus 4 and run paranoid android beta 6 with the stock gapps package and the hells.core b44t3 at the stock settings and iam getting at least 5h screen on time when useing my phone for about 20h-30h. iam just useing whtsapp, messenger, facebook, instagram, web browsing and google+, not playing games with it. i also tunred 3g off and use only wifi or 2g, because these apps dont need 3g necessarily.

2 years later?

I think this will be a good general discussion:
Whats the battery performance like for you guys on a 2 year old phone, i know after a while the battery begins to degrade which is why im trying to see if this is the case for everyone
Also what rom, kernel, tweaks are you using to get your current battery
1.5 years ago I easily get 6-7 hours screen on with power saving mode, for now i only get 4-5 hours with the same usage with Hurricane rom.
this phone is not two years old......
Yeah this phone is not 2 years old yet.. but aside, I love the Note 2 and don't plan on upgrading. I have 6 batteries for it, plus a external charger, so I never have to plug my phone in again. As far as UI goes, yes, it's missing some features, especially on 4.1.2 (luckily I never did the update ), but its multitasking features are kick-ass. At least for beginners. I had to tweak things to my liking, thanks to Xposed, such as default expanded notifications, Multiwindow for all apps, and such, but now that I have so much time into tweaking this phone I have no reason to upgrade.
I hardly noticed any difference between the time I purchased and now. My phone is 18 months old now.
Then again it could b me using 2 batteries and rotating the battery between uses so it doesn't degrade that fast.
But then again I'm not on stock rom. I was using miui in the past. Then regret upgrading to 4.3 which I found it too big of a hassle to downgrade to use miui again (4.1) and used hurricane rom with note3 mod installed. I tried ditto kitkat beta and rc1 but always reverted back to hurricane after a day of usage.

Mine last fine, about 5 or 6 hours of screen on.
Kitkat official, about 30apps frozen (Samsung I hate you lol), and greenify ftw.

thats minimum because when playing clash of clans all day in a marathon to collect lute really kills battery. With norman use easy get 18+ hours easy.
I also de blotted my stock 4.3. Eitherway better battery than before.
cheers
I was stock rom and after numerous useless updates from samsung my battery wont last even 12 hours. I moved to xperized rom and even then battery backup was less. I have just switched to SuperBeam and I am seeing an improvement. will post detailed update later. right now getting near 14 hours with 3-4 hours screen time with wifi and bluetooth constantly on.

Hmm yeah thats what i get too here and there depends on if i play games or not which i rarely do! Im trying out Omega rom v27 4.4 atm and testing the battery for a couple of days :fingers-crossed:
really guys only 6-7 hours? I go at least 10-12 hours, yeah of course it depends how much you use it for example when I use 3G and Wifi Hotspot simultaneously the battery drains like 1 second for 1%. I recommend you guys to install WakeLock Detector app. This app will tell you which app drain your battery, and guys, remove the facebook app as soon as possible it was on the top of the list.

My battery life is steadily declining. Still getting by the day, but not easily like it previously was. Hopefully it'll last until the Note 4 hits.
Is there an app out there that can accurate measure the battery of your phone?
There are tons of battery app , there is one that comes with CleanMaster app hope that should be good as cleanmaster is good app
I get 2 hours and 30 min with screen on and 5 hours with the phone off the charger and on 3g and 2 hours with screen on and 4 hours on 4g with screen on with stock 4.3 and custom roms and i get 7 hours with the on wifi and 2 hours 30 min with the screen on that is with good signal and on Telstra.
Apps i am using are facebook and facebook messenger and pocket cast and google apps that is all on 3g
I've only had the Phone since 16th of January 2013 and that is with two battery as well
After 1 year 2 months of usage, my note 2 lives around 7 hours screen on for wifi and 5 hours screen on for 3G

Bad battery life no matter what

So, I had a couple good days off amazing battery life and then went back to appalling battery life. No matter what I flash, stock kdz, v20a via twrp. Fulmics, stock nougat. Nothing works. Now I'm going to replace the battery. If that doesn't fix the issue I'll be at a loss.
Anyone else? Is this a bad batch.
Btw SoT is 4 hours on normal usage.
What is your "normal usage"?
4 hours could be OK depending of what is your usage... Also, you should give some days to the battery calibrates itself...

Normal usage is just texting every now and again with some YouTube and chrome mixed in. Definitely not a rogue app, about 2 weeks ago I had by far the best battery life with 11 hours SoT with my regular usage, then I changed nothing and I went back to 4 hours or less
Install the BetterBatteryStats for check a little more in detail what could be causing that issue. Could be some wakelocks from some app installed, but that app should give you more details...
I'm also a little like you, but for me i never had more that 4 hours of SoT in a brand new G6. I notice some big drains when using instagram or something that have camera permissions (even if the camera is not used at all).
