[Q] Raw Photos on Nexus 4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
searching the forums and google there was really nothing to be found about raw photos on the Nexus 4 or Android in general.
Maybe someone here knows if there is a App/hack that enables it, or has some technical knowledge about Android internals and if it is even possible.
Any information is very welcome, maybe there is even more quality to get from the camera with simple software?
Regards
user
PS: If you do not know about raw photos or why they are great, many details are here. Short Version: You can edit photos way better than Jpeg and they keep more quality.

Yes I'm intrigued by this as well. More than happy to put up with larger RAW sizes and post processing if it gives even a 20% boost to final image quality.

As far as I know, Google did not updated the nexus 4 camera api to the new lollipop version, so it will not be possible to get the most of it, like RAW shots or manual controls. It's a shame.
(My source is the thread in the L camera github page where they're talking about this.)

It seems like not all nexus devices are supported..

so will developers enable it?

The quality of photos in my N4 is **** ! every pic I take is blurry even when visualised on computer, I think the problem is hardware and taking RAW pics wont make it any far better !

Nexus 5x Manual Camera Controls and Samples

I'm starting this thread for owners of the Nexus 5x (maybe 6p too?) to share their results using third party camera apps that support manual controls. The most obvious one being Manual Camera.
The new Nexus phone both support the full range of manual controls, being:
- Shutter Speed
- Focus
- ISO
- White Balance
- RAW shooting
It should be interesting to see how much better results can be achieved by fully leveraging these controls, since the stock camera app is so barebones.
Post you photo samples, along with the settings you used!
I would also be curious about an app that has built in video stabilisation
Sent from my victara using Tapatalk
Some RAW images can be downloaded here. The same images developed using Adobe Lightroom with a bit of retouching can be viewed here. IMHO the quality is extremely good for a phone camera.
Third party camera apps aren't good as lg g4/g5 camera app.
Then the best thing would be to have a porting of this, because is the perfection of manual control camera apps!
But i can't do this. D:
Hey guys!!
I'm thinking of buying Nexus 5x, currently using nexus 5.
Want to know about what's the slowest shutter speed available in Nexus 5x
Thank you in advance . please do reply.

Unfortunately, this device goes up to only 0.2 sec, nowhere near to 0.8 sec as the N5. The awesome camera almost makes up for it, but I'm sure Google could change this with a software update.

Huawei mate s or p8 camera port

hey I wondering if it is possible to port the good camera from Huawei mate s or Huawei p8 , even honor 7 . they are the same with lot of good functions. well nexus 6p is a Huawei device too, do u think it is possible ?
It likely uses the EMUI framework so I doubt it. The Google camera app is great and there are other options on the play store if you don't like the stock one
y cant we have few features like using the fingerprint sensor for taking selfie or scrolling? No such app?

Its a Nexus (AOSP based)not a bloated EMUI phone. That's why it doesnt have those bloated features, nor does it need them. I never take 'selfies' or even use the FFC so it's not important to have for me. You have to remember that this is a Nexus not a skinned UI phone so it only has the bare minimum in terms of software features. If it had Huaweis normal UI it would be slower and the phone would be ruined.

Sorry m8 but the stock camera app sucks. No ISO, no Sutter speed, no manual focus, nothing. Fv-5 is great but it needs some bug fixing cuz sometimes is just wont focus and won't capture at all.

None of that is really required on a phone. The stock camera app works great, and doesn't clutter things up with necessary features. I use my DSLR frequently in manual mode which serves a purpose for a real camera; phones don't need manual adjustments especially not the 6P. Every picture I've taken has come out perfectly the first time I took it. I don't need to play with settings like I did on my LG G3, Nexus 6, or S5.

I don't know about you but I really miss the HTC camera app. Editing the photos in real time using the MF, SP, and ISO can give you the image your looking for. Nevertheless, even on auto setting on FV-5 it takes better photos then the stock camera app on the 6p. For me it always seems to be over exposed and washed out.

[APP][Camera Super Pixel][0.9.6beta] 32MP rear camera & 4.9MP front camera

Hi all!
After more than a year of hard work I am pleased to announce in this Nexus 5 forum the first beta release of “Camera Super Pixel”, a camera app that takes pictures enhancing the resolution of the camera, improving sharpness and reducing noise.
The app takes a burst of pictures and intelligently combines them into a higher resolution photograph (up to 4x) using an own-developed super-resolution (SR) algorithm. The camera is optimized for static scenes. In other situations the result may not be good.
We are working on improving the performance in terms of speed and quality of the result.
Please send us your feedback if you have any issue with the app.
Thanks for your support!

Hi RonnellTapawan,
the device must support the “burst mode” and raw photo format included in the new Camera2 API. Unfortunately just a few smartphones support this feature. We are working hard to add full support for new devices (Samsung S6 & S7, One Plus Two, LG G4, ...).
Amazing job. Is this possible to make it save photos in dng ? Other than that - once again amazing job
I've paid for it but the ads are not removed. Can you help me?

Awesome, can't wait for that. It's just step back behind "L camera" , with raw support it will be definitely best camera app
Nice work ..Keep it Up !
Front camera result is excellent ...atleast 3-4 times better than Google Camera. So this app becomes permanent Selfie app for me
But to be honest i don't see much improvements in rear camera, many times even Google camera with HDR+ performs better than it !

Hi,
the quality varies according to the number of photos the app can mix correctly. You can activate "Debug mode" setting inside the app to check it, we are working hard to improve speed & quality.
Maybe you can add flash and hdr

As a reviewer i like to give all the details i can give instead of just saying awesome or worst so i shared my observation that improvement in back camera isn't that much drastic as Front. So that you can focus on it in next version

Hi there, thanks for your efforts. I tried this app on my Z5 E6653. Didn't get the chance to test properly yet but I have a few suggestions for a future release: adding option to enable flash, option to set resolution, and make this app compatible with other devices.
I understand this is still beta but I find the concept very interesting and I'll keep my eye on this one!
Cheers!
Just tested on Xperia Z5 Compact. Works great - definite improvement in image quality. Good idea on the multi image sampling!
Agree with other comments about improved setting options. Although I imagine flash would be difficult to implement due to the camera taking a series of burst shots

Pro camera app request fot photographers

camera configuration on this phone could risult in insane quality:
I had nexus 5 and I made photos of much better quality than dslr, really. That's why I'm still using that phone. how?
https://github.com/PkmX/lcamera
this simple app let you shot an INSTANT burst of 20 RAW shots in BRACKETING, which merged in camera raw results in perfect photos even in extreme low light. So 20 raw shots + instant burst + bracketing.
I'd like to have the same function on Op5 (maybe more than 20shots per burst?), but (this is important) for both sensors at the same time.
Optical zoom is only 1,5x so I ensure that if we merge in photoshop a bracketing burst of both sensor we'll obtain the quality of professional expensive camera.
I can attach some examples of what Nexus5 reaches with this function if you want, but who's expert in camera raw hdr editing understands the insane result reachable
edit: i tried the app and it works! with our 16mp resolution, so it is fittable to any phone. the only problem remains that raw shots acquired with non op-camera apps are kind of blurred-violet
+1

ROFL, I'm an enthusiast photographer and shoot with a Nikon D3 and I laughed my a$$ off reading that. The OP is delusional. There just is no way you'll out do a DSLR with a camera phone if you have any clue on what you're doing with the camera. With total control of a current smartphones camera you might get close to what a DSLR will get you on auto.... MAYBE, and forget from a phone from 3 or4 year old smartphone camera.

Another enthusiast here (D800) and I am willing to be more charitable. In good daylight a cell phone camera will produce images that are more or less on par with a mid-low end dslr, at least in terms of basic technical things such as noise, acuity. I do agree that in lousy light all bets are off, and this is what the OP implied.

In good light they will be close on the camera maybe at 100% on a phone screen. You put that baby on a PC monitor and start pixel peeping and really scrutinize, it won't be close

Google Camera HDR+ function can be activated on Mate 9's?

Recently seen that for the latest 8** series Snapdragon SOC driven devices the HDR+ function on Google Camera was made functional on most of devices. The results in comparison to their original camera seems day and night from all points of view especially in low-light situations. As we now this seems to be Achilles heel for the Mate 9 and maybe the biggest reason that most of us lookup for other devices.
As I am no expert, I wonder if this function can be made functional on Kirin chipsets!? I want to take this opportunity to pull the alarm for the developers' and for the skillful members of this forum.
If successful most likely most of us won't look that soon for the planned new launches like: Note 8, V30, maybe even the next Mate.
You can do it yourself you know. Just shoot several raw images and combine them into one in post. Not as quick as HDR+ but it works!

That thing already know, but regardless of how hard you try (any app or setup) you cannot achieve results that good. Plus google camera's exposure is much better. Please check this thing yourself if you don't believe me.

Yes. But not the most recent ones. The ones for 7.0 work.
True HDR uses three different images that you then assemble in a photo editing suite of your choice. The 'HDR' function in any phone is not a true HDR and just a computer algorithm that blends three exposures. Since the Mate 9 shoots raw, most will just do it the 'real' way Would be neat to see this function in the Mate 9 for us lazy folks(yes I am lazy and yes I am a professional photographer)
Ok, so no interest in this direction, nobody keen on improving the camera.
Not what I was saying at all. If we can improve the camera and keep all the functions built into it by Huawei, I would be first in line to sign up. Hell, I bought this phone specifically because of the camera. It is a wonderful performer that I have not even begun to stretch to the limits yet, but I have only had the phone for 3 days or so. I look forward to an improved camera, but only without the loss of functionality

No, I didn't do anything special. But pay attention: there are two different APKs. One of them is for Qualcomm CPUs. Download the one in the first link. This one.
Hey guys, I've tried the other one I think and crashed the camera driver had to reboot! Lemmie try this one! Thanks kermex
Edit: Nope! I open once, then can't open again :/ Oh well... Another curious thing is that it only detects the 12MB RGB Sensor... These sensores have so much potential, hope Huawei will get into the Camera Software deeper...
So now it works, change hw level to legacy.
Comparing histograms using 2 pictures, one is stock HDR and the other is using the Google Camera HDR+, I can conclude that HDR+ isn't working, can't see any improvements regarding dynamic range. What do you guys think?
