2nd replacement N7: Noticeably different back. - Nexus 7 (2013) General

So today I returned my second N7 to get a third (rebooting issues, first completely locked up).
Maybe I'm imagining this, but this back seems significantly 'slicker' than the other two I had - very little 'grip' in the soft-touch. In addition, the look is an exact match for the N4's 'ring' - same glitter and such. I seem to remember the original 2 I had being more of a rough matte black. This one kinda has a satin finish.
Slightly unrelated note: I've noticed something interesting regarding the buttons. On my first N7, the volume rocker had a blue protective sticker on it. On my second, both the volume and power buttons had the sticker. On this one, neither of them had it.

No blue stickers on the buttons on mine either - I guess your first units were from another / initial batch

I didn't have stickers on my buttons either.. Has anyone else noticed that the buttons scratch really easily/soft plastic.
I take very good care of my devices, never a flaw on any of them even after two years. Everything on my second n7 is great.. Except that just pushing the buttons has left scratches all over them. They've never contacted any surface but my hand. They should have made them the soft touch like the original n7.

What's your serial number?
Decoding manufacture serial number/date?
The N4 has had a bunch of major and minor changes over it's manufacturing lifetime, it wouldnt be unreasonable at all to assume the 2013 N7 will too.

Stickers on buttons? Didn't have that but entire N7 was covered in a plastic wrap of sorts that covered the buttons.

Sounds bad... Maybe I should keep my 2012 until the bugs are worked out??

Volume keys beneath the cover falling apart

I've been using the HD for two months, and the volume keys beneath the cover appear to have their plastic falling apart, revealing the tiny electronic parts underneath.. anyone else encountered it?

I'm also having the same problem. I been using my HD for around 7 months though. The volume down cover cracked and after awhile, the whole cover fell off. I wonder if this is a defect and will be covered by the warranty.
It's strange, but I find the button feels better without the cover. You get a sort of click when you press on it without the cover.
mine did the same after a week, Still works fine though!
Same here had the HD for 7 months, though I think mines related to using the stylus on the vol down button when entering bootloader mode.
Still works fine though.
Did anyone find out if this is warranty repairable? My volume down button came off after 4 months. I'm just concerned about the resale value!
I pay for Orange Care, so I think I can pay £15 for a replacement, but don't see why I should!
I´ve same issue with volume up button but also still working because there are some parts of it still there.
Don´t know if warranty is covering but I wanna know!

i second that.
my buttons rubber got demolished by using a fingernail for getting into the bootloader ...
My internal down volume button is also gone leaving the round brass contact exposed. Still works but yes horrible that it has happened.
Did any of you guys try warranty repair through HTC? The cover under mine has also cracked, which for me means it doesn't have that clunk positive feel and I'm just wondering what the process will be.
Thanks,
Jon
Same issue..
I never expected such an expensive HTC phone to have such basic build quality issues ..
Have placed a complaint with HTC support, trust they would be able to help.
Thanks...
ditto..
mine has also fallen off on the vol down button, no problem as it still works, but like it mentioned, would be worth checking out if its reparable under the warranty before it expires (do we get 1 year faulty parts?)
Well I phoned HTC today and their initial argument that if the button is broken due to usage then the warranty is not valid - Eh? I can't see how that's any kind of defence. Looks like they're trying to bypass the devices having to be of merchantable quality and/or fit for purpose.
They also had not heard of any other volume buttons breaking - whether that's true or not who knows.
I'm sending the phone in tomorrow, for an assessment so I'll update how it goes.

Any news from HTC? The rubber on my volume up buttons has broken away. This looks like a design fault on behalf of HTC... We should get together to let them know they've got a problem...
My VolUp button also is failing but - the internal(the one under the back cover) is kinda soft and it has its middle pushed in... now my VolUp button is hard to press cuz the outer button (the plastic with back cover) pushed the internal in a bit!!! Since I listen to musid a lot with my Touch HD its a pain to always push the VolUp button!! glad that you have the onscreen buttons!!
oh and about the construction : my HD fell out of my hands today from about a meter high - landed on the floor which was full with little pieces of sand, and slided a bit!! now I have some nice little holes on the front cover on the right top (opposite to the Vol buttons) !! glad that my screen had a screen protector , otherwise my screen would be just f***ed up!! (when I picked up the phone the whole screen was with little pieces of sand - like sandpaper-- I just wiped them of plugged my headphones back in, and everything worked like it did before the fall)
I have the exact same problem. The plastic / rubber on my volume down key has disappeared leaving the microswitch exposed and the volume down not feeling as good. It still works though.
Well my initial call with HTC was very negative - saying that if it's damaged due to use then I'll have to pay. I sent it off to be assessed anyway, good news was that they sent it back repaired by return post. Couldn't have been more pleased.
Well worth sending off.
Jon
Both my Up & Down Volume Plastic is gone the Up Still Works but the Down the Little Brass thingie fell off :-( HTC wants $300 to fix!
what should i do?
Me too......
Just when I was about to sell my HD, (a new LEO is on its way) my down volume key began to fail. Exactly the same peeling off the internal microswitch.
Where did you get yours repaired?
Mine was bought free.(Spain)
Regards.
:-(
If your phones are out of warranty and want to do a self repair, here is the part (used) on Ebay (170408817615) for sale. I have looked high and low for months until I finally found it. The guy says he has 237 available.

IMHO this reference shows an HD part not related to the volume keys.
Not to mention the price......

Soft key backlight issue?

I noticed that there's a tiny gap between where the screen ends and where the frame begins. It looks really crappy when the backlight for the soft keys is turned on because the light shows through this gap.
(I used the nexus one camera for this, so it's not very visible. It looks a lot worse in person.)
Does anybody else have this? If not, I'll just go swap mine at the sprint store...
No light leak on mine!
I have the same problem although mine is a lot worse. Maybe I should get it exchanged.
No leak on mine. That would drive me bonkers....but I'm ocd. Bring it back!
Most have this
This goes hand in hand with the glass separation issue. Give it a good press down at the bottom and it will fix it for about 30 seconds. It's a problem with the adhesive. I'll be using my warranty once the evos are more readily available.

Same here..
I think they are all gonna get this at some point. Is it neccecarilly a defect? you cant notice it unless you sit in a pitch black room... also i use the silicon case that overlaps the glass just a little bit all around so i dont really notice anyways.
i like to read at night with dark mode. so just the fact that i can't turn off the menu lights irritates me. i used to use LEDshack on the droid.

Well, as it stands, its not a huge deal. The question is, how bad will the problem get? It has potential to be a serious problem if it continues to separate. (ie works it way on up the phone)

Screen not evenly aligned on handset?

Okay so I was trying to clean out the dirt in the sides of my phone (the area between the screen and cradle) and noticed that the screen was ever so slightly left and top aligned than centered. In other words, there was less space between the screen and the cradle on the left and the top than there were on the right and the bottom. Not really a big deal, but a sign of poor manufacturing.
Anyone else have this on their phone?
Glad I'm not the only one with that problem, the right side of my screen has a little gap with the bezel, not much, but dust has gotten in there. I'm wondering if I should exchange it and try to get a more perfectly aligned model.
looks like the phone was rush to market with out proper QC

I am thinking about an exchange too, but am waiting for two things:
1) A case and SP to come in to prevent this from happening again
2) To see if this is a common problem
Surprisingly, I think this phone has actually one of the better shields between glass and bezel. I went through COUNTLESS (literally probably 10) Nexus One's with dust under screen (some had failed power button too). Next, the Vibrant was ok, but the following phone, my MyTouch 4G...oh man. Again, went through 5 of them all due to being shipped with multiple specs of dust under the screen. My Nexus S isn't perfect but at least this first one is decent.
One thing I learned..trading in one phone for another can bring unwanted problems. Others are complaining about home/back buttons on the side not working, others say GPS is an issue. You never know what you'll get, so be ready. I don't know how keen Best Buy is on swapping a few phones either.
In my experience though, HTC has far worse QC than Samsung (including the crappy HTC tinny speaker). Ugh, don't get me started on that.

i think you can always go to the store and check, i am sure you will find another one that doesnt have this problem as it seems to me its a manificaturing issue where it screen wasnt placed properly.
not a big deal but for an OCD guy like me. i wont be able to sleep at night till i get a better one lol
Mine looks to be centered, I can't see a difference between the left/right side.
Mine is not off center. But I do have some "lift" on the upper right hand corner (next to the ffc). I can press it down with a little play. Basically it doesn't sit completely flush with the bezel. It's not super noticeable. However the other three corners are fine. Not a biggie but it is noticeable.

Opinions Wanted, Slight screen lift:keep or return

So this is the 3rd day i have owned my new Nexus 7 32gb SSN: C90 bought from walmart. Really happy with the device, the first day i had checked it for screen lift and didnt notice any, not saying it wasn't there as it is very likely i didnt even quite know what exactly i was looking for. However, after examining it today, more in admiration of it, i noticed some screen lift on the upper left side (in portrait orientation). I believe this is exactly where mostly everyone else has noticed it. I could tell there was screen lift because when looking at the device from the right side over to the left i am not able to see the bezel where the screen lift is occurring, while from looking from the opposite side i am able to see the bezel completely.
Anyway, what are your guy's opinions? should i return it and exchange for a different one, i checked all of their stock and they are all C90 models, not sure if that matters but i assume they are all from the same production batch.
Hold on to it until a new batch comes in, then exchange it.
If it's bothering you or there is noticeable movement in the screen when you tap that area, then return it.
Ignore all the talk of "batch numbers" there have been issues with every single one of them. Personally, I had a C70 with bad screen lift and it was replaced with a C70 that is perfect.
Its bothering me, but it is only because I know its there, there isn't any noticble flexing in the screen when viewing it normally. Have purple had the screen lift without issues?
Washer fix and move on with your life. I've been through 4 and 50% of them had screen lift. The washer fix works awesome and takes a few seconds. The back is meant to pop off. No big deal.
As for all my swaps.
#1 bricked after flashing a bad boot loader. #2 was stolen. #3 was a loaner that I returned for #4 32gb.
Washer fix works. Or get a case. Boom.

Wiggly unresponsive home buttons

I came across a bunch of threads and videos on YouTube of people saying that their home button is loose, wiggly, and sometimes unresponsive. (as in my case)
My s6 has an issue where it didn't respond to normal pressing on the left side of the button, and since I'm left handed caused a lot of miss clicks for me.
I went to samsung today and they've sent it to the technicians, hopefully I'll get a replacement.
Here's an example from youtube of someone who has an issue on both sides of the button. (only responds in the middle)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5IIAIl0Dfw
Since this is a manufacturer problem, I think Samsung should recognize this issue and replace units that have that issue.
Yup, had the same with mine, but only left side.
So many quality issues with this phone that I went back to iPhone6.

Mine is on the left side only as well, I'm not sure how the 14 days return policy apply to electronic devices in my country, I didn't even notice the problem at first, now that period has passed anyway so I gave it to Samsung under their warranty, hopefully they'll either fix it or replace the device and won't just claim it's not a real issue or something, it's a premium device that I paid a lot for, there shouldn't be issues like this with a premium phone.
They hand out refurbs under warranty. I would've kept it for something that minor.
I wonder if that's an issue that can be repaired though, like replacing the button or something. (using the manufacturer warranty of course)
Mine has the same issue. Left side presses do nothing until I get towards the centre. Right side is perfect up to the very edge. The button doesn't feel wobbly. But I put it close to my ear and tapping I could then hear the left side is rattling but the right side there's no rattling. I'm going back to the EE shop tomorrow about this. Two things concern me though. Is it possible to get one that doesn't have this issue because many people have said they've had a few replacements with the same problem. Secondly, I hope Oliv3 is wrong and I don't get a refurb replacement.

My first S6 had the exact same problem. I got a replacement with a fully functional home key. Too bad a third of the screen had a really bad case of pink tint. Getting a replacement tomorrow. I wonder what will be wrong with that one...
I am getting a bit fed up with the inconsistent build quality of these phones.
This has ALWAYS been the case with the Galaxy series of phones.
I had 7 replacement S4s, YES 7!!! Because each replacement I got had a fault be it pink tint, green tint, banding on the screen, wobbly power buttons, wobbly home button etc
I finally gave up on my 7th handset and made do with a defective power button as it had a near perfect screen.
So basically, I would rather a wonky home button than half a screen that's pink.
Think twice about sending in for replacement.
My S6 has very unresponsive capacitive buttons, the back button especially doesn't register i've touched it 25% of the time.
But, the screen is good, so I'm living with it.

Refurbished phones like Apple does? So if i send my phone that has a little scratch on the frame i'll get one without it? Because i have the wiggly home button that doesnt respond to clicks on the sides, but i didnt want to send it to repair and be without phone for a couple of weeks, but getting rid of the scratched frame would make me send it.
They repaired it, though it took two repairs.
First time they've replaced everything besides the home button, which was the problem I've sent it in the first place. (They've replaced the entire display, charging port and god knows what else)
Second time they've replaced a bunch of stuff including the home button. (Random stuff like "battery sticker(?)")
Oh well, at least now it responds like it should, it's still a bit wiggly but nothing that bothers me as long as it works well.

Probs they send out refurbished products in the US only, you know to be on the same level of Apple. I think i'll wait then, the problem doesnt bother me that much.
