[Q] Can't send/recieve MMS with wifi on - TMO - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been reading different things everywhere about this and I still can't find a solution. I also had this issue on my S3 with a custom ROM on there.
I just got the Nexus 4 and I flashed PA3.96 on it, great rom. Everything works fine. I just am unable to send or receive MMS with wifi on. Once I turn it off, it's fine.
I've tried both stock and GoSMS and neither can download or send out MMS.
Can someone direct me to the solution for this? I'm on T-Mobile and the APN settings are correct, checked it with a stock S3 and they're the same.

Just to be clear, are you trying to send MMS over wifi or you just cant send them while wifi is enabled?

edit: didn't see you already mentioned the carrier.
T-Mobile and Verizon usually don't send MMS via the Wi-Fi Network, you must be on 3G (in my experience)

I'm just trying to send a MMS anyway, my previous phone(s) on tmo, with wifi enabled, would be able to send the mms regardless. But I would see the wifi signal still on, and then also the 3G symbol come up because it can't send it over wifi, but it would know when to switch to 3G/4G.
If that makes sense.

I believe I understand. When you are on wifi, even with 3/4G coverage your Texts do not send? Mine work just fine on Tmobile. What app are you using to try and send your text message? Or is it only ones that have an image in them?

Not quite, so I keep my wifi on as much as I can (connected to networks) and I also never turn my data off (3G/4G). With my S3, stock, I can have my wifi on (connected) and my 3G/4G on, and be able to send/receive MMS like normal.
With my Nexus, with my wifi and data on, I'm unable to do either. I have to turn off my wifi to be able to send/receive MMS. Texting is fine either way.

Check your APN settings. They should be:
Name: T-mobile US
APN: epc.tmobile.com
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
APN type: default,supl,admin,mms,hipri
APN Protocol: IPv4/IPv6
APN roaming protocol: IPv4/IPv6
Everything else should say: "Not Set", or "None"
Save those settings and then reboot your phone to test

I'm pretty sure mine is set exactly like that, other than the APN type, there are a few I don't have on mine. I'll test and let you know.
Seems to be working now, adding those to the APN type made it work. Now just an issue with GoSMS, but that's a different story.

That's interesting..the only thing I added was admin and hipri under APN type, and it seems to be working now.

So, this was working fine until today, I wanted to try out one of the hybrid LTE modems. MMS is still working, but I can't send/receive with wifi on again. Practically the same settings as the epc APN other than the different LTE strings.
Anyone else experiencing this?

Data Not working on Telus

hey I have a Samsung focus unlocked with a telus sim in it. Everything works fine except MMS and 3G data. I dont really care much about mms but im paying for data. So im wondering if there's anything thing I can do to fix this. In the settings it has no data options, and for some reason it says 3g on the signal at the top of the phone but no connection when i try anything.
thanks

Install Network Profile from Marketplace (under Samsung Zone) or via web here.
in settings goto cellular and at the bottom goto edit apn and enter the following settings
apn - sp.telus.com
proxy server/URL - 74.49.0.18
proxy port - 80
leave everything else blank and hit the checkmark.
after that you are good to go.
make sure you reboot the phone
Thanks guys! The reboot is really what helped me out the most. I love the internet

MMS problems

I have been having problems for quite a while with receiving MMS messages and sending them as well. I am on a monthly pay as you go plan with no data and i am out of the tmobile network, (roaming still in US) but with my previous phone (sidekick 4g), I was able to send and receive MMS messages if i had wifi calling on. Now that trick doesn't seem to work but once every good while. All I get is the download option then my bars will get that "x" over them to signify no coverage and wifi calling will turn off and after a while start again and no progress will be made in the download process. I have tried having both national and international roaming on and neither seem to make a difference. I havent made any tries to change the apn settings. Could anyone help me solve my dilemma? Thanks any help will be greatly appreciated.

Even though you're on a pay-as-you-go plan, you'll still need data enabled to send/receive mms messages. Otherwise you'll receive the message but never be able to download the attachment. My phone is on a plan without data, but I still have to enable data in order to send and receive MMS messages. I also need a good amount of signal (it has to be practically full signal) for it to go through. As far as my experience goes, you can't send or receive MMS messages while Wi-Fi Calling is enabled. Your signal bars show no signal because your phone is switching between Wi-Fi Calling and mobile radio. As for APN setting, I'm not sure which ones do and don't work. Whenever I have issues with MMS, I look up the values and re-set them.
TL;DR Just enable data and give it a try.

I have T-Mobile as well. If you watch closely when receiving an MMS, you will see that although WiFi calling is enabled, the mobile data indicator will show up and transfer the data.
As far as APN settings are concerned, it has no effect on WiFi calling. If you can receive MMS when connected to mobile data then your APN settings are correct.

The thing is that I do have my data enabled and i do see the indicator showing the data transfer but its usually a "G" and the arrows neither go up or down, but its really strange yesterday I was able to test it out and I was able to recieve an MMS but I tried sending one right after and nothing happened. I will probably recieve the failed to send message later on today. I was just hoping there was a fix to this. And as far as I have seen with experimenting with it, WiFi calling must be enabled for me to send or recieve MMS if not I get the message of could not send or could not download right away

Please help me diagnose data problems on AT&T

I had a galaxy nexus on AT&T and i cut the sim into micro sim for my nexus 4. I had to push it in a little hard, but it seems to work fine.
Lately though, I am keeping my nexus 4 on 2g while at work to save battery on this phone because it loses a ton of battery while sitting idle on 3g compared to my galaxy nexus. But I'm noticing that data starts and stops working. The bars are still blue but no up and down arrows when I'm sending a message and then after a minute it stars working again for a few seconds. I thought maybe it was the AT&T tower near my work but it's doing this at home too (forty miles away) on edge. 3g seems to be slightly better but happening in that too. This has been happening since last Wednesday. Anybody have any ideas? I'm wondering if there's something wrong w/ my phone, or if I damaged the sim card slot, but I'm not losing signal or getting a message that sim card isn't detected or anything.

The tower you're connected to may just be busy and you're just stuck waiting.
"Cell phone traffic through a single cell mast is limited by the mast's capacity; there is a finite number of calls or data traffic that a mast can handle at once."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_site#Range
No it happens at home as well which is forty miles from work and not a very populated/busy area

It's not just happening with What's app for me, it's any data. I'm wondering if I didn't cut my sim card to micro sim right or something..but then wouldn't I lose signal all together?

I didn't set it because I thought if you're on a postpaid plan it should be set in the nexus 4 automatically:
"If you plan on using your newly unwrapped Nexus 4 on either AT&T or T-Mobile postpaid services, you won't need any extra configuration. The devices come out of the box with the carrier's proper APN settings preloaded in the software."
http://www.androidcentral.com/how-setup-right-apn-your-nexus-4
what is the correct APN for att
I had to set mine to get it right.
Are you missing push notifications, or does it take a second to gear up when you want to use mobile data? If so, it's an issue. If you're just worried about the up and down arrows disappearing, I wouldn't be concerned.

No, in that minute or so where it's not working, it actually doesn't transmit data. It's not just the arrows. People are not getting my messages on time, and I'm not getting theirs. Web pages don't load, the phone isn't even trying. And then all of a sudden it'll start working. I also tested it by messaging myself on my computer by opening another gmail account I have on the computer and trying to talk back and forth. I know relying on the arrows isn't a very scientific method, but each time I see the arrows, the checkmarks appear on whatsapp messages (which show it's been transmitted), and the message shows up on my second gmail account on my computer.
The really difficult part of troubleshooting this is that it doesn't work...for about a minute, then it works for a few seconds...then it stops again.

On the APN type try putting:
default,admin,fota,mms,supl,hipri
That came straight from my vivid on at&t before I did anything to that phone. I got that gong on this one too and it works.

XT907 support multiple APN's?

Hi guys, ive been trying to get internet and data working on my Droid M ever since i got it. I cannot get them both working at the same time. I have one apn for internet and one for mms. When i receive a mms, i have to go to APN settings and enable my mms apn just to get the message. I shouldnt have to do that.
Doesnt this phone support apn switching like most phones? It seems the Verizon apn has both internet and mms in one file which leads me to my question: is it possible to have two concurrent working apn's on this phone?
If anyone has got internet and mms working seamlessly with 2 apn's please post your settings. Thanks.

No mms on wifi

Anyone else having issues sending and receiving MMS messages while on Wi-Fi? It will not send or receive pictures or videos while I'm on Wi-Fi. But as soon as I switch Wi-Fi off and back on my network, T-Mo, they send and or recieve instantly. Same for group messages. I have the H918 variant.
Edit:
I seem to have found a fix. Still testing but so far all seems to work. What I did was change some of the APN settings. Changes I made:
APN type: added dun,hipri,fota
APN protocol: IPv6/IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv6/IPv4
Which texting app are you using?
I am using the stock app that came on the phone. I was also having the same issue with Google messenger.
mms over wifi
thank you my zmax pro on metro pcs wouldn't send either. now they send fast.
Yeah I have this issue as well. They will transfer only through data
