Fantasy Football Draft App_idea - Windows 8 General

So, I wish i were a developer, id just do this myself, but unfortunately, looking at code is literally a foreign language for me.
There is currently no Fantasy Football Draft companion app on Windows 8 - this could be huge, and probably not very difficult to make. All we need is something that lists the players by rank, maybe link to ESPN, Yahoo, CBS, ROTO, etc. rankings.
Give option to strike out players picked by other teams, and to add players to your team. Bye weeks should always be visible next to players you pick, and players that are available. Maybe be able to export team list to excel, or word, or something like that.
Id pay 5$ for the app........Im sure there are many other football fans out there like me that would do the same.
Make sure to be able to save a team, start new team for those with multiple FF leagues.
Thanks!!

You can always learn. For reference, if you were to develop a windows 8 app you would most likely use C# (no real relation to C/C++) however you can use VB.net, managed C++ and I think there are ways of using a few other .NET based languages too.
Otherwise, I have no idea what fantasy football is so I will be of little assistance, sorry.

[NEEDED] Programmer for a Android Game

I am currently in the R of R&D for a new type of rpg card game I need a programmer to programme the apk as all the info needed will be supplied during the programming stage.
I am new to developing android games.
When the android market opens to canadian sellers I am offering up a permanent cut of the sales to whomever is chosen for the programming as updates will need to be made over time (aside from bug fixes).
anyone interested email me at: [email protected]
Go start reading the Android documentation and learn to do it yourself. Ideas are worth nothing in the game programming world. You can't ask someone to do all the work, and then give you most of the money.

Ditto, if I were experienced enough to do a RPG, then I might be willing to help you. But you can bet that whoever would make it would put it on THEIR dev account & keep the profits to themselves, they did the work anyway.
Just sayin.
man, this thread is brilliant. hey guys ive got a game idea too, i need a dev too to all the coding and programming for me and in return i'll give you a cut. Just do the coding, developing, graphics and leave the rest to me.
I guess I wasn't clear with the request. Not all the programming is to be done by someone else and is not an Action RPG, Its a cardgame related to the CARD RPG genre, the difficulty is my programming is out of date and I am looking more for a mentor to watch over me and someone who is more familiar with the apk architecture. I could have easily taken a Poker game and shredded it for code and exceptions but that is a little more complicated. But I guess its easier to beat a person down verbally then inquire with decency.
Really
I've stop doing these kind of trade out because the person who owns the account will never show you the actual numbers.
There must be a way to work together on app development, even if only one of them has access to the market account. For instance, you could add a certificate mechanism in the program that adds the other party into the application activation process?
Anyway, if you're willing to pay the dev his/her commercial hourly rate I'm sure you can work out a deal.
Such an odd thread - I wonder how many developers working for the big games houses expect to own all the code they are paid to write. Oh, wait... Yeah, fundamental flaw in certain replies here I guess?

I get paid a salary for the code I write for my employer. The OP isn't offering a salary.
Just because he/she lacks the resources to provide a salary (or fixed rate) doesn't really open the doors for such mocking replies though. After all, there are many good/great ideas from people who lack the ability to produce them, the same as there are many great developers who lack the ideas for something to write.
At the end of the day, every project has to start somewhere and this could be with funding in place, developing and idea to obtain funding, or starting something as a team of individuals who agree how to split revenue from a final product.
For example, the comment that 'ideas are worth nothing' implies that every great gaming idea came from a developer. If that were the case, game design positions wouldn't exist.

Android Reference Book

During my business programming career, I always had good reference books to use no matter what language I was programming in.
I'm not talking a "How To..." book, but a solid reference book. Here's the class, here's the methods and their parameters. Maybe a short example.
I can't find anything similar for Android OS...anyone out there know of something?
Yes, I know it's on the net, but for me, there's just something about having the book. Like when I'm not coding, I can lay on the couch and read it while watching the game or not have to switch screens (even though I can pull-up a reference link on my second laptop).

Checkout Professional Android 2 Application Development by Wrox - Reto Meier (Author). Been using it for a month or so, learned a lot and it is pretty in depth for complex subjects. One of the best books ive used
Guess it's worth a try. Got scared for a second because I DID order Android 2 Pro and returned it the next day. There was no order in the book, nothing was clear at all and tbh, it was just nasty bad.
I can try the one you suggested. If Amazon is anything, they're fast and the return policy is just awesome.
Thanks,
Roots
Google develops android too fast for books to be worth the money, IMO.
Read the SDK docs and work with some code. Anything in that book is trivial to find on the internet.

Professional Android 2 Application Development is a very good book and it quite up to date in its current revision.
I can also warmly recommend Mark Murphy's Warescription. You get four e-books and all it's updates for 12 months. Those books are high quality and Mark does a very good job at keeping the books up to date and also at helping his Warescription community with their questions. You should give it a try.

I got the book. I was up late programming (as usual). It was like 4 a.m. EST Monday morning when I ordered it on Amazon. Did 3 to 5 business days. It came Tuesday!!!
Thanks, it's a good book. The FULL source code and all listings are downloadable which is nice. The book covers a lot of information and I think it's in the intermediate to semi-advanced level. Well written, logical progression of concepts. Only thing I really miss are some screen shots of an emulator running the projects.
I think I might run to local Best Buy, get a new black ink cartridge and print all the source code out and get it bound or put in notebook for a one-stop reference. Some projects have 5+ classes in them and it's easier to "flip through" in a book vs. onscreen. Worth the $20 in material (paper and ink).
what about a good book or place to learn the basics?

I would start with some Google-found tutorials. There are hundreds of "Hello World" apps out there. For a beginner, the Hello World app is probably easier than getting the SDK up and running! LOL
Then work with adding EditText and TextView boxes. Then move on to Buttons. A good second program is "Enter your Name", "Hit Submit", "Show your Name". That gets all 3 ideas above going as well as onClick code and will get you working with main.xml
awesome! Thanks for the info. I installed everything earlier from Google and got that all setup. I will look more into everything else. Appreciate the reply.

You could also look for a book called "The Android Developers Cookbook" written by Steele/To and published by Addison-Wesley...
Yeah, the basics are pretty easy, yet still powerful. I wrote some pretty basic apps (at least from the User's view) that are selling ok. But I learned a lot.
I'm a professional programmer, but as the economy goes, currently unemployed. I've learned a lot of languages (10 or so) and a lot of different environments. I'm finding the Android OS and the whole smartphone environment a remarkable new experience and what I feel, something that's just going to grow exponentially.
Good Luck

Developer looking for a freeware game project

Hi everyone,
at first I like to give you a short introduction of myself. I am 23 years old, living in germany being a trainee as software developer. Currently I am looking for a freeware and/or open source game project to join. I'm used to object orientated programming and also have some basic knowledge of game development. In the recent weeks I started to learn how to use OpenGL ES on android devices.
Important:
- Do not reply with something like: "Please code game XYZ for me!!!"
- If you know a good place where non-profit android game developers are searched/found please tell me This would be a great help too.
Even if I may me able to do the coding part all on my own, but I still lack some skills on modeling, texturing and especially the music/sound stuff.
So what I am looking for is mainly a team of non-profit (donation based is absolutely okay) developers that is lokking for an programmer for some game.
This will be a hobby project (what does not mean it shouldn't result in a good game) so I will mainly be available for coding on the weekends.
The type of game does not matter that much to me, anyway it should not be some clone of another android game. There's so many types of games that are completely missing on android devices (on others too of course) that it shouldn't be that hard to choose something "new".
What came to my mind at first were some portal-like game with a built in level editor. The levels created by that should be shareable over internet so everyone can extend the game by new content. This way you could share your own (or good ones of other's) levels with your friends that should keep the fun with that game for some time.
Another great project would be something nearly fitting a request I saw here in the forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1077132). Its about some "Minigame-API" that should be containg some models (units/"monsters"/buildings), level textures and an interface to script own gameplay mechanics. Mainly something like the Stacraft / Warcraft III / Stracraft II level editor reduced to the basic stuff needed to create own funmaps. There will need to be some basic engine for a RTS game, but regarding story/techtree's/balacing/etc. there will be nothing to do so far. The Editor itself should be a java programm (cross-platform) thats interface is like/near the Warcraft III Level Editor. (Kind of easy to use but very powerful if you master it )
Both of those crazy ideas would require a lot of time and/or people to work on it so I of course also would like to help on some less advanced project. Anyway I do not want to create the 50th tetris clone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032166
I know this is kinda in the area of "Please code game XYZ for me", but as i stated in the post. I can do all the graphics etc. I've also spent some time learning java this past month, so i got some knowledge..

If you can supply more than just an idea to the project its absolutely okay I will have a look at it.
Edit: Sorry but this kind of game isn't what I am looking for, it's just too simple to give me the challenge I want. Maybe I will contact you if I don't find any other project within the next few days. (Better coding a really simple game than to twiddle thumbs )

Advise needed: How do I go about developing my first android app ?

Hi,
I am a recently laid off 30 year old SAP consultant from India. Over the last few weeks, I have been reading about the wonderful world of android apps. There is a great opportunity in India for android apps as millions of smart phones are sold every year. I have decided on building apps targeted at the Indian stock market - like stock screeners, that help people reach a proper investment decision. I want to make money out of my apps, so I want then to be fairly professional so that somebody buying them wont feel cheated. Also, there are not many (any) stock screener apps targeted at Indian stock market. So there is an opportunity there and I want this idea to be my first.
But how do I go about it ? I learnt Java at college, 10 years ago. My Java is highly amateurish even after I refreshed it over the last few weeks.I have bought a book on MIT App Inventor...and developed a few simple example apps already and tested them on my mobile. I am not yet sure App Inventor can help me develop more complex apps like the one I mentioned above.
So, I am desperately looking for advise from people who have been there, done that. How do I go about developing my first app ? Should I go about it the hard way - learn Java better ? Read a book on Android application development ? Build Web Apps using HTML5, JavaScript, JQuery ? Or stick to MIT App Inventor ? Try some app builder development tool like Tiggzi, Codiqa or Kinvey ?
I really need your advise as I really need to develop something quickly and make money out of it. :fingers-crossed:
Hi!
As far as i can help....i made some apps, some of them native with Java and others with HTML5.
From my experience, if you plan to make somekind of "atlas app (like wikipedia)" or not very user interface intensive or if you already know html5+css+javascript, you could go with html5, but i will always recomend native with Java as you have much more control over you app.
Anyway, if starting from 0, go for Java (Android SDK) get any tutorial around the web, there are tons of them, some better than others ofc, and free.
Hope you find your way to go!
good luck!

Thanks for that. But may I also know your opinion on MIT App Inventor ?
I started with App Inventor and quickly out grew it. Using java will make it easier to move on to complex apps or add more complexity to any current ones.

I personally wouldnt use app inventor nor any other kind of "easy app maker"
I would not use the inventor, too.
I recommend reading the Head's First Java books (skip the UI part) and for Android the Vogella tutorials.

(Btw, you cannot build an app quickly to make big money. If you want to be successful, you need to spend a lot of time on development.)

My Hibernate trainer quoted the following "You guys are brought up with IDE we used to compile on console". My sincere suggestion even in this RAPID developmental technologies around refresh your "Java skills" on console (DOS or Unix your wish) and make use of Eclipse IDE with Android SDK plugins for fast development. That would do. Start with Eclipse Helios and Google Android SDK and AVDs. Here you go... http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
I have developed a couple of very good apps and I use one myself but Google play store expects payment to become one of their developers Why should I pay for my own app to releasing to public for free? I choose XDA let them validate and evaluate my apps and enjoy. Let us CJava++++
The day is not far may be you get donated enough expand your ideas.
My advice is - don't read books, just start coding. A year ago I knew absolutely nothing about Java or Android. Find a webpage with sample android Activity. Start spawning your code from there. That's how I did it. Then lear something about deriving from View class... and so on...
Hey guys, thank you for all the advise. I will go through what each one of you has said and do things systematically.....I am basically starting from zero......so, lets see how far I go....and I will inform you guys about my progress and seek guidance from you.
Thanks again.

Yea it wasn't always good but now they have a good training part + they provide sample code that you can run and fiddle with
It has a couple good step by step stuff, but its mostly "add this code" and has snippets that don't often make sense till you have a decent understanding of the rest of the code.

Learn how to create android applications / modifications, any recommendations?

Hello,
A short time ago I bought tecnology android and I've realized that I love to make changes, delete, re-program, install Rom, etc..
I always liked this programming, the only limitation I had was my financial situation, but it does not allow a limitation, short steps going forward.
For this reason I come to ask those who already know how to program, where I can find good tutorials, PDF materials, sources serve me to learn programming this wonder?
I would also like you to tell me how hard it can be. I already I have some knowledge of codes, mainly web design, HTML, CSS and some PHP.
Since today I get to work .

Have you tried looking at the official web site for Android developers from google? I would post a link, but I still don't have enough reputation to post links. You should be able to find it by just googling.
In any case, you could start with Coursera or Udacity. For Coursera, you may have to wait until a class starts. But for either of them, note that you don't need to pay any money to take their classes. On Coursera, click on the title of each course to avoid the paywall. On Udacity, click on the blue buttons to "get free access to the materials", and don't bother with the "nanodegree" or the "free trial", that's where they ask for your credit card number.
On Udacity, it goes from the extremely easy to the extremely hard. Their beginner materials may be too easy for you. And their intermediate materials usually starts getting too hard for most people at around week 4. If that happens to you, go to the Coursera web site.
A few steps to start:
1. Google: android development
2. Install Android Studio
3. Set up a GIT repository: hint: google GitStack
4. Create a new app using Android studio template: hello world.
5. Start adding features to it.
It's not as hard as it looks .
