Hi,
I recently bought my Nexus 10 and I notice a few issues with respect to the display of fonts. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 too with me for quiet a while. I was told that the Nexus 10 is superior with respect to the display compared to the Note 10.1. The fonts on the Note are quiet bold and bright while the same on Nexus is very thin and light. I tried increasing the font size but it's still very thin and awkward compared to the Note. Is this because of the higher resolution and ppi of the Nexus? Is there no way to change that?
I am considering getting the 10, and would like to know opinions on this. Can TC include a screenshot of the font?
Have you tried ifonts on app store? you can change fonts on the nexus 7, so maybe the 10. Some fonts might look thicker and bolder....
AFAIK it's about the font used by Touchwiz and AOSP, on my S4 with TW ROM the font was one way, while on AOSP was other . Try that iFont app suggested, may do the work for you

I was planning to install the Windmill live wallpaper on my Note which I have on my Nexus One so I was pleased to find it already available on the Note. I liked how it looked on the Nexus One but when I tried it on the Galaxy Tab the icons obscured it too much. It looks better on the Note than the Nexus One and I don't suppose there is any need to worry about the amount of resources it is using as I did on the Nexus One.

Finally got someone to show me their Note 2. Very nice, but i still have the same grip about the aspect ratio-16:9, not 16:10 like the OG Note. Placing both phones side by side in landscape or "tablet" mode, The OG shows 5 emails in gmail, while te N2 shows 4. Most tablets also have 16:10(like my Note 10.1) and 1280x800, which what makes the OG a "phablet" to me. THe N2 just is a big s3 at this resolution.
Has anyone used one of those LCD resolution apps? I see setting 320 dpi in the apps change the res to 1280x800, has anyone tried this on the N2? This is literally the only thing keeping me from getting it. The larger, phone looking display of information seems like such a waste of screen space. I want the tablet part of "phablet", the more lines of text the better.
Thank you for your input
I use density changer from the market and set it to 240dpi. Going back just looks weird now, everything's so BIG. You'll need a new keyboard though because the stock Samsung one FCs but there's loads on the market. Might be adviseable to have one readily downloaded before you change density. Some other apps go slightly awry but the plus points easily outweigh the HUGE icons.

This is not relevant, but I find this Interesting, because I am the opposite - I would not have considered the Galaxy Note II if it had retained the resolution of the original Galaxy Note. My primary use of the Note II will be for watching videos, and almost all of my video files are 16:9, so the black bars would bother me. (Strange, I know.) I also have a netbook with a resolution 1280x720, and yet, I have no problems with the fact that the screen has a shorter height than it would on a 1280x800 screen.

ye i modify build.prop and tweak my dpi, you have to be careful though or Samsungs stock keyboard goes into a FC loop of doom anything under 270dpi needs a keyboard replacement before you make the change. Theirs a thread somewhere with stocks apps modded for lower dpi.

sounds excatly like what i need! Do you think it equates to the 1280x800? Do you think you could take a screenshot of gmail in landscape mode?
Seeing 4 icons on a stock note 2 is just so blehhhh....im on nova on my N1, so i would prob use it on the N2 as well.

I dont mind black bars. In fact, if you watch a real cinematic experience, one would want 2.39:1, not the 16:9 "HD" they push on us

Similar to a few other threads, I'm curious what the stock LCD density is for the Nexus 10 tablet; I recently changed ROMS before thinking to look at the one that shipped.

Physically, its 299. But in software, its 320 as Android only has resources for a small handful of DPIs. Manufactures will use the closest one to their device when shipping.

In a nutshell, because pixel based art doesn't scale well, and it would be insane to create a graphic for literally every single possible screen density, Android has the following software options for pixel densities: ldpi (120), mdpi (160), hdpi (240) and xhdpi (320). Technically you CAN set it to something else, but then the market breaks and things look ugly since it'll be forced to scale another size. Its Google's way of ensuring sanity for software developers, since going a little off wont hurt anything. All that setting affects is how many pixels individual graphics take, the higher the dpi, the more pixels used. So a lower DPI would result in less detailed, smaller icons and UI but more space for content. A higher DPI would be the exact opposite.
If you want verification of this, try an app like Elixir and look at what it says your display DPI is. On stock and CM10.1, it says the density is 299 but clicking more info shows "extra-high (320)"
Its a long read meant more for developers, but its explained here: http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.html
Excellent! Thanks.

Hey guys,
Am new to this forum. I was using the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 and was pretty happy with the phone - the UI, battery life (2600 mAh), size etc. However I came across this guy who was selling a 2 month old Nexus 4 for a reasonable price and so picked it up - thought of giving my wife the Samsung.
Now, a couple of things I noticed abt Nexus 4 is that the screen and colors look pretty washed out compared to the Samsung, the stock Kitkat 4.4 UI and controls look very very bland compared to Samsung's TouchWiz. Am not confused whether to keep the Nexus or to sell it off.
I dont want to make a mistake in haste. What do you suggest?
Thanks.
What did you do before this happened?
The Samsung phones use OLED screens while the Nexus 4 has an IPS screen. The washed out colours is a common complaint and many Nexus 4 owners don't know why the LG-branded version has such good colours.
To help alleviate the problem, it would be best to install a custom kernel or ROM that gives you colour control.
I installed the Experience ROM with the iPhone5 colour profile and it looks much better.

Hello! I know that its common knowledge that the nexus devices don't have the best looking screens, and that flashing a custom kernel can fix these issues for the most part, BUT even still, my screen just doesn't look as good as say my friends iPod Touch or another ones S4. I've tried GalaxyS4 colors (preset in FKU) and I'm using obsanity for now, but its still just not very good. Any tips?

You can try bundi22 iphone 5 color or Pa halfbreed.
It'll never equal an Apple device, those simply have the best screens in the market. As for the S4,it uses a completely different display technology. The Nexus 4 uses an LCD screen while the S4 uses AMOLED. And there is only so much you can change with kernel settings.

The Samsung Galaxies have notoriously inaccurate colours, they are really over saturated to make the screen look more vivid. N4's colours are actually pretty accurate, for a cell phone, when I measured them with a calibration tool.
People are just used to unrealistic, over saturated, crap I guess. iPhone 5 is pretty damn nice however: good gamut and balance. But, the Samsung amoled is just cheesy crap.

Try flashing a kernel that allows you to change color profiles or your gamma settings. Then you can play with it and see which profiles you like and adjust them however you want
