Hi Everyone,
I'm looking to return to the stock MDJ recovery using the stock TAR packages here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2269304 (can't believe GooManager will overwrite an existing recovery partition without taking a backup).
I've read that I can extract the recovery.img from the TAR package and individually flash that via ODIN. Is this true? If so, I would flash the file as "PDA", right? Will there be any data loss as a result of this process (internal SD and apps)?
Thanks.
Does anyone have any ideas?

In preparation for what im hoping to be the best EVER batterylife rom KG5 rom, is it possible to convert a CMV flashable rom into a tar flashable with Odin ? and if so how ? greatly appriciate an answere for this question tried to google it but failed
I'm not sure this is possible, but why would you want that anyway flashing via CWM is so much easier.
It is possible, but you will need a linux environment (Cygwin isn't enough).
first you need to flash your CWM ready rom on your device and boot it up normaly.
then shutdown and go into recovery mode. there you should do a a factory reset.
connect your device while it is in recovery mode to your pc and from your command prompt run ADB and get SU privileges. (you need a rooted kernel for that)
then you should write:
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p9 of=/sdcard/factoryfs.img bs=4096
this will create your factoryfs.img on your sd-card. but this img is not flashable through odin.
you need to make sure the .img is 512MB, or else the rest of the steps won't work.
so now you need to convert it to an odin flashable img.
for that you need to follow this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081239
but skip the first command as you already have an unpacked img.
after you created your flashable factoryfs.img you can now make your tarball file.
I recommend to leave out the cache.img as your factoryfs.img has the csc folder already.
I also recommend to leave out the sbl.bin.
to make your tarball use this command:
Code:
tar -c boot.bin factoryfs.img hidden.img modem.bin param.lfs zImage >> PDA.tar
make sure you have all these files in the same directory.
good luck!
thanksalot!
the reason i want that is because i feel "cleaner" just doing a total system format and then installing from odin
np!
I edited the explanation a bit so it is more readable.
tell me if it works out!
will do, have to wait untill monday tho, got linux comp at work
Total system format via CWM recovery.Bar sd card.

I hope that's what you mean.

System data and cache format to be very clean .
SD card would of course wipe the CWM flashable file but can be done prior to the flash by wiping SD card in Windows copy the CWM rom onto sd card and format the rest via recovery .
Long winded method only really needed to clear out junk and old roms 100% .

OK, so I flashed one of the new leaked ICS stock ROMs and it appears that everything is ok. I'm digging all of the features including the panoramic camera. I decide that I want to put on Taboonay for a little flavor. I try to boot into recovery and this is what I get:
Erasing cache before SD update
SD update cmd: recovery
--update_Package=SDCARD:update.zip
Booting recovery kernel image
(IN RED) Recovery verified failed
Yes, I tried to flash a recovery image through the ACER recovery install and the ROM Manager. Both of them flashed an image with no problem, until I actually tried to flash an image.
My question is this: How do I flash a recovery image if my bootloader is busted?
I do have ADB access , so it there a way I can copy a recovery image file directly onto the A500?
I appreciate the help!

Well, not sure if I can get you up and running. This is going to depend on if you followed traditional installation instructions that are posted on every thread that contains a Rom.
But first, let's cover where you went wrong. And that would probably be when you went back to Recovery. It seems, you didn't hit Vol - and PWR, but instead selected Vol + and PWR. And as such, it tried to run an update.zip file, which is a no-no. This resulted in a corrupted image.
Secondly, Rom Manager is a phone app. This will in most cases, bork your tab.
First, I would try Acer Installer (newest version) and try to install RA Recovery. If you were using CWM before, you probably can't flash it again.
If that doesn't work, then you will have to roll back from ICS, and you will need your original UID number. Hopefully you wrote this down somewhere. If you were using RA Recovery, you will find the UID number in the UID.txt on your SD Card in the Recovery folder (if you made a system backup before flashing ICS roms). If you were using CWM, well, it might be buried in one of the .img files in the clockwork folder (again, if you made a backup before flashing ICS). You will have to de-compile the image files to find it (hopefully).
If your ADB seems to be working, you may want to push the RA Recovery;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459821
If you have your original UID number, then you may want to try this;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1522384
or this;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1516012
Hope you get it going. From what I have seen, mostly when the people lose their recovery, they were using CWM. Haven't heard of any losing it when using RA Recovery. But anyhow, use Acer Recovery first, and try the RA Recovery.
After having just recently rooted my phone using CF-Auto root (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlsO5o_-CI8), I am looking to flash a new ROM and hoping to get some clarification or confirmation on the flashing method I am planning to use. I want to try and flash either a Google edition (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2341794) or Omega ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2253528).
When attempting to flash I will be following these steps:
Perform a nandroid backup,
1. Downloading the .zip file and put it onto my external memory card.
2. Booting into PhilZ CWM recovery and wiping data/cache.
3. Perform a factory reset using CWM recovery. (does this delete all my apps?)
4. Flash the .zip file using CWM.
5. Reboot phone.
Are these the correct steps to take?
I keep reading something about bootloaders and how it can brick your phone if you do not unlock it, is this true? I am unsure as to whether or not I have unlocked it.
Furthermore, can i use titanium backup or another program to not lose my apps? I really would not like to reinstall every single app after flashing a new ROM.
I am currently using the GT-I9505 locked to Virgin in Australia.

1. If You have Just Rooted it using CF Root then u need to Install Recovery First. You Can Head to the Philz Recovery Forum and download the Tar file and flash Via ODIn.
And then You Can follow the Steps mentioned.

I believe I have downloaded CWM recovery, or which ever custom recovery this is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2281367
I am still quite unsure on the bootloader, should I just not worry about this? Also, is there anyway to recover apps afterwards because I do not feel like downloading all my apps again.

No ,you can flash a .img file with Mobile Odin Pro (if you have I9505/Qualcomm cpu), not with PC Odin. The .img file can however be repacked as a .tar file so you can flash it with PC Odin. Flashing a recovery does not wipe any user data.
Hi. I'm using the 18/Redmi2Prime and I was thinking of reverting back to MIUI and I'm on CM13. I'm kind of confused with all the threads here because it's been a while since I was active here in the forums. Can't I just flash the MIUI ROM over CM13 using TWRP 2.8.7 with a clean install?
I wanted a rooted lollipop miui hence I am reluctant of choosing this. And I donno which ROM to choose either. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Grab a copy of the stock recovery from here, and follow the instructions to install it onto your device. Basically, download the file, extract the .img file from it, and install the .img file using TWRP. Then boot to recovery.
Then, download a copy of the official MIUI ROM (beta, release or otherwise), from here, rename it as update.zip, copy paste it to your SD card (internal/external), and from the stock recovery, wipe all existing data (cache and user data - SD card can stay). Install the update.zip from the recovery from the options shown.
Done.
Additional notes -
1. If you are plan to go back to a custom ROM, then install a pre-lollipop based MIUI ROM, or backup your EFS, Modem, Boot partitions prior to wiping the existing recovery - this will save you a lot of trouble, and perhaps opening another thread.
2. It is preferable to download the MIUI ROM and rename it as update.zip before you restore to stock recovery, should anything go wrong down the lane. (That is, without a ROM installed, and the computer just not willing to recognize your device, you might end up in a small soup - you cannot access the files on the phone using the stock recovery easily.)
3. If anything goes wrong, check for instructions on how to install the MIUI ROM using fastboot.
Hey thanks for the quick reply. Will do the mentioned and will get back to you if need be. Thanks again!
But wait. It isn't prerooted right?
