I have a nexus 4 with android 4.3 and root on it but when I go to recovery mode it shows me the dead android with a red sign so what should I do next to go to the normal recovery mode because I want to install a custom rom (paranoid android) ?
The picture you describe is the stock recovery.
You need to reflash cwm or twrp recovery in order to install a custom rom

I'm new to Nexus devices and just wonder. If I flash a custom recovery and custom ROM, how do I get the STOCK recovery back?
I know who I go back to STOCK ROM, only flash a recovery IMG from Google. But how do I remove custom recovery?
Wonder this because if I need to send my Nexus 10 back some time..

If you do a factory restore custom recovery will be removed, thus the term, 'factory restore'
Thank you very much!
With that information I'll go for AOKP and feel safe about going back to Stock if needed
Hello! I updated my nexus 4 to 4.3 with the OTA, but why do so many people have trouble updating their N4 to 4.3 when they are running a custom rom?
U can easily flash 4.3 builds through CWM or TWRP. Or is there a difference between flashing through recovery and flashing through fastboot?

Flashing through fastboot means doing it thru your PC with commands on the CMD and i think it uses different files ( I'm not so sure about that)

At least to me, i tried flashing thru custom recovery and it gave me an error every time so had to flash the image thru fastboot. Its (i think) the easiest way if you don't want to find youself having many problems.
Installed many times always stuck on bootloop. File is only ever 200mb so im guessing im trying to install an update on its own. Any links and advice please

Do you guys factory reset after flashing CM?
The best way to install is to flash Official CWM recovery from their website (Google Clockworkmod), download .img file and flash with SGS4 FLASHER from Play Store.
Boot to recovery
Go to mounts and storage
format system, data, cache. (make sure you've done a backup of current ROM before doing ths)
Then flash CyanogenMod ROM
Then factory reset
Then reboot
You should be fine
If you get stuck on splash screen it's cool, Just hold power down and try again. You may need to keep doing this till you see CyanogenMod boot animation. I've had to do it 4 times before it would finally boot. It's normal though just something weird with CM10.2 kernel. If you flash a custom kernel it boots fine everytime

Yeah i always factory reset before a fresh install of a rom. So the file is actually 200mb then? Seems a bit strange to me.

I never had problems installing CM.
I have Phil CWM.
I used the option to wipe for a clean install from the CWM and then installed the zip and after that reboot.
I am on cm 10.1.3 RC2 and all is good
I use phil cwm !! I try all the possible ways to format stuff im flashing roms about 4 years now and know how to flash them... But this CM10.2 just doesnt work for me !! I even used twrp but just doesnt work... Once this thing came afater flashin , it was updating apps and after that got stock on starting apps

Update guessing is the ota? You can use flashify app from play store to flash either TWRP recovery 2.6.3.2 that is a IMG. Or 2.6.3.3. That's a zip file .....
Okay will try

I just read in another thread that custom recoveries cannot yet be flashed on the latest OTA. You have to revert back in order to have a custom recovery. According to this thread.

If I saw that on my phone's screen I would know that the
phone has stock recovery and most likely it's not rooted.
So I would root the phone and install/flash TWRP custom recovery.
Good luck!

The fact that your phone is rooted is the reason why your stock recovery is showing the laying ( I call it dead ) android.
There is no need to install a custom recovery if you all you need to do is root the phone otherwise there's a lot of uses when you have a custom recovery like backing up your firmware and install/flash custom roms.
I installed cwm and flashed the recovery is there something else I need to do to install a custom rom

No that's about it ( I do recommend that you use an external microsd card for backup though ). Just need to download the rom of your choice and flash away.
When I boot into recovery I end up on that screen with dead android

That means CWM didn't install properly. Seeing you have a Tmo phone, head over here and follow the guide.
