mf3 miscellaneous files storage 8.18gb? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

why is my miscellaneous portion of storage showing as 8 gb? if I click it, it says "7.97gb system memory" and underneath shows folders like zedge and kindle. my largest folder shown after I click on miscellaneous is zedge which is 135 mb. I'm unrooted and on mf3. (galaxy s4 i337) my gut feeling is that the 7.97 gb is the space that is taken up by default due to bloatware and preloaded apps. please help me explain why 7.97 gb of my phone's space is "system memory". thank you.

You guessed right...we have a huge system partition...nothing you can do about it...we need a dev to redo our partition layouts...but before we can do that we need a bootloader unlock...a real unlock, not an exploit like loki as rhat just allows flashing kernels and recoveries

Only 6 for me

On Cyannogenmod it is much less, only 1.3GB for me. Is that expected?

well thanks everyone. I really don't mind the space taken. rather I just wanted to just know what was taking up the space. thanks again

Haven't seen this exact problem yet

Just rooted and then installed safe strap. I'm using eclipse. Its really cool! I partitioned one gig for my ROM slot. My settings tell me I have 2.34 gigs left but I went to download an app of 9.8 mb and it tells me I have insufficient storage. I deleted some useless stuff with titanium and it still says the same thing. I haven't checked the stock rom again to see if it also gives me the error. I will do so tomorrow. Any ideas?

OK just appears that I can only use the mory in the partition space. Which makes this phone crippled as to custom ROMs.
But that seems to be exactly what Motorola was going for.
Sent from my XT907 using xda premium
Appears to decide randomly which partition gets to utilize the free space. Eight now its ROM slot one. Before it was the stock ROM slot. I still have 1.98 GB free.

Nexus 4 16GB Actual Storage size

My internal storage reads a 12.3 GB size, now is that including the size of the OS or not? Because after formatting my SD i have a little under 7GB available. So is the missing 5GB or so for OS? Meaning the true size of the SD is 12.3GB? That seems awfully low, even after realizing the promised storage size is always optimistic from the producer. Anyone got the answer?

That sounds about right... My 211k Nexus 4 16 GB shows 12.92 GB of free space running CM10.1 nighlies, franco.kernel, .27 radio, and CWM recovery
Should look like so..
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Do without apps/pics/bids etc you should still have around 12.8 available space to be used.

How did you format your SD? Do you have any ROM backups?
right I just ran SD MAID and it says 9.2GB is used in folders /storage/emulated/0 and /storage/emulated/legacy - both are exact duplicates of the same ****! After googling it people seem to have the same issue! Know which one is safe to delete? I'm running AOKP milestone 1 if that helps

Both /storage/emulated/legacy and /storage/emulated/0 points to the same location so you are seeing the same files in both locations. SD Maid seems buggy if it cannot detect symlinks properly (maybe there is an option for that app so it doesn't follow symlinks).
Okay, heres a screenshot of SD MAID. I have folders sdcard/ - storage/emulated/legacy - storage/emulated/0 and storage/sdcard0 all containing the same stuff and the memory I'm missing is exactly that of which I'm already using up so it must be duplicating everything elsewhere, but in which directory?

Be careful deleting either. I had a similar issue after using an old version of Astro File Manager. I think they may be "Hard Links", not "Symbolic Links". I ended up backing up my SD data, and did a Factory Reset, which formats the SD partition. All is well now.
It's a known issue that it can sometimes think you have 8GB as opposed to 16GB and the only way to fix it is to flash the factory image...there is a thread on here somewhere about it

I think were talking about 2 different issues. You phone knows it has 16GB, it's just the files are taking twice the space.
Yes, setting>backup & reset >factory data reset was what worked for me.
The other issue was when flashing custom ROM's, on a 16GB model, your phone became a 8GB model.
So you don't believe I have this issue of a 16Gb model believing its an 8Gb model? But instead just because my filed are duplicated?

Holy ****, found the culprit. I had 3 nandroid backups taking up 5.6 GB. Never realised they were located outside of the sdcard. I have 8.somethingGB free now. Apologies for wasting time! Thanks anyway
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
They are on the SD card, just not normally visible in Windows. If you go to /data/media/clockworkmod in your favourite root explorer (e.g. ES) you'll find them there (or you can delete them through your custom recovery)
Yes I meant not visible as opposed to not actually being present on the sdcard
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
After factory reset I show a total available space of 12.92gb and with nothing loaded on the device it says 10.21gb available. Is this normal? I was under the impression that if the internal storage was wiped I should have pretty much all of the 12.92gb available for use due to the other 3 gb 13-16 being used for the actual system. What am I missing?
Thanks

CM 10.1 mounts in the internal SD in the proper root directory: /sdcard/
Just a thought if it's a deal breaking feature for you.
EDIT: I'm actually not sure this can be done on CM10.1 either....
Edit: ive just found out a day ago that if u install the international version of software that has been pushed out as an ota update it has this done ! Apps 2 sd!! But still have to wait for ours on att. Or hopefully a dev will code it into a rom for us . I was just actually mad becuz the sell it as internal sd storage when it really is not separate from the phone memory that the system is on . I had a captivate that had it separated. But still loving the phone regardless.

Much appreciated:good:
GS4 TW backups are massive. That's the correct size, they could even be bigger lol.

Well, technically that is EASILY going to be the incorrect size unless you meant to type Kb and not Mb. If so, yes, that would be correct.

No 1 Gigabyte is a typical backup size. If you start loading up with apps it can get much bigger.

I had this same thing happen to me over the weekend. I think what worked for me is doing a factory reset through twrp, then rebooted twrp to get the partition sizes to sync. I had all my data backed up to my sd card so I was able to restore the apps. I also did a full system wipe and flashed a Rom I had on my SD card. I hope one of those two things work. Let me know if it does.

custom rom or remove bloatware?

Hi,
I will be receiving a galaxy S4 soon.
I need to know what would be the best option.
I am going to root & then either:
remove all bloatware using a no bloat or root uninstall app.
or
install a custom rom Doc Barebone possibly??
I would like to get as much space back as possible as I have heard that you only get around 9gb on a 16gb model.
Ideally I would like to keep (or reinstall with full functionality) the stock camera app.
I am not fussed about all of the touchwiz wizardry.
I also need to be able to install apps 2 sd card
& have live wallpapers & a music & video player
How much space is usable after a doc barebones rom install?
Apologies for all questions, coming back to android after a few years on iphone.
None of roms than I see opens more Space, you can move some apps to sd card.

I read that the Google play rom gives 12gb usable space as there is no bloatware & was considering it also. I thought the doc barebones may give slightly more.
Do all of the custom roms have app2sd functionality?
Can you install live wallpapers on the doc barebones rom?

Thanks for this , it looks like I will install doc barebones as it keeps the stock camera & if I can store apps on sd as well that will be great.
One more question, if installing a rom with no bloatware doesn't give more space, would it not be easier to just root & remove bloat ware from stock.
I'm a bit disappointed I thought I could have got some of the storage back. I read on another thread that Samsung have partitioned it so that 8-9gb is free regardless.
Read elsewhere that the google version of s4 has 12gb free.
Is there no way to completely wipe the phone & installation rom that gives you the same 12gb as the google edition..?
The apps to sd "feature" does not save you any appreciable space. You are far better off using a third party app to move the data to external sd and symlink back to the internal memory.

Reasons why people use Modified Stock ROMS is simply because the developers do a lot of editing as well as build.prop tweaks to insure Performance and Overall Stability.
Regardless of what TW Rom you use, you will have about 8.+ ----9Gb free space...
Don't Say Thanks. Hit IT LOL..
Hi.,
I have the i9505 version. I have rooted using Odin & now have su rights
I noticed that the docsbarebones rom is for the other galaxy.
Are there any roms that keep the stock camera & have apps 2 sd
Apologies noob
*** edit I have tried a few roms , but what I did was unrooted & loaded the german version of stock rom that has apps2sd then used auto root so I can remove bloat.
When I send an app 2 sd it sometimes says your device cannot move 2 sd card.
It still lets me do it though.
*** further edit. It isnt actually working.
Get error "/The_Device_does_not_have_a_real_primary_external_storage_or_the_primary_external_storage_is_emulated__Moving_app_to_SD_Function_my_not_be_supported"
What can I do to get apps2sd?
Does anyone know how to get app2sd on galaxy s4? It says its installing to sd card but its just writing it to internal.
I checked by installing a massive game, said it was all on sd, but when I uninstalled it gave me the space back internally.

It worked exactly as designed. Only the apk is moved to the ext SD. It does not move any associated data.

Hi, none of the files ever get copied to the external sd card though. They end up in some sort of sd/emulated/0 folder.
They arent on the external sd card. Everything seems to get stored internally.

That's the way it is supposed to be. The apps to SD feature is such a waste of time, I wonder why anyone even bothers. Only a single small installation file is moved to your external. Everything else is left internally. That is by design. If you want actual app to SD functionality, you're going to have to use a third party app such as Folder Mount to get it.

I think link2sd can do it. I have had no luck though. I cant get it to recognise the second partition.
2 of my main reasons for getting this phone was ability to store apps on external sd & a good camera . They are both frustrating me now as I cant get any method to work for my sd storage & seemingly galaxy s4 has hardware limitation on camera functions my iPhone 4s could do.
