Will this work to root, install recovery and rom? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

new to samsung devices so not sure about certain things..
1. root using CF-Auto root
2. install twrp via fastbot, fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
3. downlad rom, wipe and flash via twrp
my question is for cf auto root do i need an odin that's specific to the galaxy s4 or can i use odin i downloaded from let's say a galaxy note 2 thread? and do i need to do anything else to install a rom on samsung phones ? thanks

Yes to 1.
Install twrp through goo manager by hitting the menu button on the "main screen" of the app. Then hit install script or something along those lines. Follow instructions. Now download and flash a ROM.
I would use the odin that comes packaged together with cf auto root. Just to be safe.
As a heads up some Roms may not have WiFi working after flashing. All you need go fix this is to flash a different kernel.

how to flashl custom ROM?

just go s4 and it is stock still. I want to go for custom ROM like S4. I looked around the forum but couldn't find a way to flash the custom ROM lik mega..
Can someone point me a thread on this?
Should I just use ODIN to flash the recovery like twr and then boot into recovery to flash the custom ROM?
will then the rom be root as for custom ROM.

could you provide the odin link to download and
the instruction to root?
could I use twrp recovery? I used twrp for my sensation previously.
Any instruction to flash twrp. I guess it should also be done from odin.
Thanks.
btw: The model is 9505 in dk 3.

Ok So i've got SuperSU and Clockwork installed on the phone. But for the life of me I can't get into the Recovery section to do a back up. [How-To] Root N900AUCUDNJ5 4.4.4 (11/21/2014)

This method uses a modified version of the official NJ5 OTA to update and "Keep Root." The file is flashed in Safestrap and the end result is a 100% Stock, Rooted, NJ5 Device. However you must be 100% Stock NC2 (except for root and Safestrap) before proceeding.
**You can Odin back to NC2, after taking the NJ5 update, at anytime**
1. Place the N900A_NC2-NJ5-KeepRoot_OTA.zip onto your ext-sdcard.
2. Boot into Safestrap recovery but Do Not Wipe!
3. Flash the N900A_NC2-NJ5-KeepRoot_OTA.zip in the "Stock Slot." Once flashing is complete press "Home" and reboot into "Download" mode.
4. Last, flash the N900A_NJ5_Stock_Kernel in Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
Once complete the phone will reboot then "optimize apps" before completely rebooting. Done!
Notes & Known Issues:
1. Neither User Data nor your Knox Warranty Flag will be affected using this method.
2. Should the update fail consider flashing back to factory stock NC2 using the N900AUCUCNC2_Full_Odin_Tar (flash in Odin's slot(AP in Odin v3.09+)), then root, install Safestrap, and continue with the above process.
3. Safestrap will not function after updating to NJ5 4.4.4. See workaround here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2957471
Alternative Custom ROM Method: (If you don't know the difference between each ROM please use the search function!)
N900A_NJ5_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM.zip
N900A_NJ5_Stock_Deodexed_Rooted_ROM.zip
1. Use Safestrap's "Backup" function to backup your User Data.
2. Place the ROM onto your ext-sdcard.
3. Reboot into Safestrap recovery then perform an "Advanced Wipe" and wipe everything but your ext-sdcard.
4. Flash the ROM using the "Stock Slot."
5. Once complete press "Home" then "Restore" and restore User Data.
6. Next press "Reboot" and reboot into "Download Mode."
7. Flash the N900A_NJ5_Stock_Kernel.tar.md5 in Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+). Done!
Thanks to @carl1961 for sharing his nandroid backups used to create the ROM's!
Notes & Known Issues:
1. This Custom ROM process will update your Modem, Non-hlos, System, Kernel, Stock Recovery, and Bootloader to NJ5.
2. Safestrap will not function after updating to NJ5 4.4.4. See workaround here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2957471

Already checked that out. You are still able to do a full odin downgrade back to NC2 even after taking the NJ5 ota update.

Correct, flash back to NC2 then follow the OP. In regard to future updates, yes having root may prevent future updates from successfully flashing.
No i mean having custume update not root i know having root wont let me flash ..but would i have problems updating ota updates later. .

Did you flashed twrp on Ur device?
for install cfautoroot you must install twrp.tar on your PC (download from here https://dl.twrp.me/klte/twrp-3.0.2-2-klte.img.tar). then you must flash it via odin.
to flash it make sure you installed your device drivers on PC and enabled USB debugging in developer options.
then boot your phone in downloading mode by pressing power+home+volume down button. then connect your phone to the PC. open odin app and choose the recovery.tar you install from the link i gave you. flash it and wait until finish(maybe 2 or 3 min) and then reboot your device to recovery by pressing power+home+volume up button. flash your cfautoroot and enjoy [emoji5] .

I actually got it working, by installing a different version of supersu. The one I had was an update-supersu. I then found the full version and it worked. It did reboot itself a couple of times. The cf autoroot did not work for me at all. I opened it up in 7-zip and only saw cache and recovery, nothing related to supersu. I would like to tell anyone that the roms from sammobile did work, but I had to try a couple of them before i found the one which would flash properly.
If you extract the boot.IMG (or recovery.IMG I don't remember but not cach.ext4) and flash it via TWRP it does the trick. That's what worked for me.
