the games - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

for this tablet, are there many big game files (over 1GB?)? or are most games like 10-100MB?
and is there a way to download games from the play store directly onto a usb stick attacked via OTG cable?
or is there a way to transfer to the usb stick via OTG cable after the game is downloaded?

There are lots of games on the play store ove 1 gigabyte. It depenfs on what u want. Like gta vice city is around 1.5 gigabytes. Dungeon hunter 4 is .93 gigs. And mc4 is very large at almost 2 gigs. Im pretty sure theres a way to move to otg sd but im not sure if you can download straight to it as i dont use it. (I have 32 gig version). To move just cut the files and paste to your sd card that u use in otg.

I think so. The otg acts like an sd card for a normal phone. But ask in one of the thrwads about it (theres a couple) because itll have people who use it and know for sure

Hi,
There's an app I use on my Galaxy S4 called "GL to SD", this way I can simply copy and play the games from my sdcard . Probably will do the work with your OTG ^^.
Good luck,

Limited Storage

How are you guys getting around the limited storage/lack of expandable memory issue? I'm thinking of picking up a goflex satellite wireless drive to store high def movies there to watch over wifi on short trips but not sure how it actually interacts and if i will run into any issues with the vids
I bought a 2tb western digital my book live to store movies and music and use the wd2go app to stream to my tab 10.1. Its working well so far.

even when you're out on the road and stream high def vids?
Mainly Amazon MP3 has been a life saver.
When you sign up you get 5GB of free storage. However when you buy any album thru Amazon MP3 you get upgraded to unlimited music storage and 20GB of storage for other media/files. I was able to upgrade when Lady Gaga's album was $.99 on release day.
That has solved alot of my music storage issues. Also with Netflix working on the device, I have ALOT of content to watch.
I'm still working on a way to take more videos with me, I'm really hoping that when I get my 30-pin to USB adapter that you can use Mass Storage devices with it since I usually have to carry around 2 500GB HDDs with me for school anyway.

i saw a youtube video where a guy tried this with an external hdd. sadly, the tab rejects it because it is a "high power usb device". it cant supply enough power to it i suppose.... :-(
but usb stick etc work fine, they are getting pretty big too these days. and i think an external ssd should work too...

Thankfully I might not have that issue.
Both the HDDs I take to school has an optional hook up for external power, just in case you aren't able to get power from the USB/Firewire Port.
Man i was hoping at least one person in here has used the seagate's battery powered wifi external harddrive and can comment on the compatibility between the tab and video support

Using wifi hotspots yes, but I only have a wifi unit. I havent tried by tethering my SGS2 and using H or 3G, will have to test that one out.
I only have a 16gb GT, only put a few playlists from iTunes on it and put the rest of my music on Google Music and Amazon Cloud Player. I then ripped some movies and put them on the tab, about 5 movies.
Half of my storage is now gone, maybe a little more than half. It is going to have to come down to movie/video management to keep space open on the GT.
Google/Amazon cloud music is awesome for your entire collection and just leaving a playlist or two on your GT.
For long trips you could add and remove videos by using the USB adapter.

Outside of LTE based service, i can't see this happening with HD videos.
You need to buy the 32gig version for starters. Then get music and docs in the cloud so you have all the internal space open for movies. Then get a cloud storage service so when you get back to your room at night you can watch movies, erase the ones you've watched, and download more from your cloud drive. Basic storage management is all its going to take. Or you could take a laptop and hook it up to the tab at night and do the above process. Last I checked this tab is not meant to be a portable Hi-Def surround sound movie theater. They might market it like that (I haven't seen it) but its meant to watch home movies, view pictures, Google+, browse the web, use apps, and listen to some music.
I am waiting for the USB adapter comes out (I am not confident enough in my soldering to doctor one up as shown in another thread), and then I'll just attach the SD Reader I already have, and buy some SD cards.
In all, SD cards are much smaller than the goFlex drive, and don't need any battery, charging, or whatever. The drawback is of course cost - about $50 per 32gb SD card (so 512gb = $800 or so (16 x 32gb), as opposed to $200 for the goFlex 500gb) - so it more matters what you consider more valuable - smaller carry size and 0 extra power requirements, or a that can carry everything, but that is larger, and requires charging or a power source.
Get the USB adapter and a handful of cheap 8GB flash drives. It's hacky, but if you're not able to access cloud-based storage then it should suffice. You can get those postage stamp sized drives for about $10 now. Watching a movie with the adapter plugged in might not be all that good, so just use the file manager to copy from the USB drives to the Tab as needed.

I'm curious about Seagates GoFlex Satellite wifi drive also but I can't find one at a nearby store to buy & test out.
sounds like a nice drive from what i read about it, but just another device to have powered up
get camera connection kit, and buy a couple 16GB thumb-sticks.
It also means you can't connect to the internet while connected to the Seagate WiFi drive. Which seriously limits your multitasking capabilities.
Got a USB Host adapter yesterday
I tried connecting a powered external hard drive to the GT USB adapter today and it didn't work. I tried xFAT and NTFS disk formats but it wasn't having any of it. It either complained of a corrupted USB drive or an empty one, even though it wasn't empty or corrupt. Thumbdrives and sd cards in an adapter work fine though. I plugged a mouse in too to check it out and it worked great. I just ordered a 32 gig SD to use with it. ~60 gig of available content is pretty decent.

I'm still waiting for Google Music to be released in the UK so I can upload my 30gb of music. However we have had Spotify for years, coupled with my free premium account and "all you can eat phone data" i have made a lot of playlist that I just stream them to the phone and tab.

Saving apps to external Usb?

Just wondering if this is possible? I have my otg cable and Usb drive but can't find a way to properly save apps to the usb. I have the 8gb and really just use it for games and with some games needing a gb or more of space this thing filled up quick. Thanks for anyone who can help.

Apps and game shave to be installed on internal storage. I dont think it is possible what you want..

can you connect a cellphone as a drive to the tablet?

i have a galaxy note, 16gig internal, 32 gig sd card
is there a way to mount the phone to the tablet as a drive and read files (like play movies and music) off of it ?
nope,i have tried this before,it only charges my phone, this is due to the missing drivers.

[Q] Setting up OTG

Hello there, I'm currently looking for a usb OTG cable, will get to test one later this evening.
I have a question: What do i need to do to set up the storage on the tablet side? Do i need to get an app that configures the new storage or is it just plug & play. I'm asking because I will try to test the cable to see if it works. Can I just use Solid Explorer to access the external storage after i plug in the usb cable with the attatched card reader and 16gb microsd hc class 6 card?
My nexus7 3g is rooted, currently on Jr4 Rom.
Oh and another thing.. is the nexus7 limited in terms of microsd size and speed class ?
Thx allot.

Get StickMount from the market - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount&feature=search_result
Plug and Play
Use a file manager to find it
Stickmount is the way to go, but you must be rooted. The Nexus Media Importer app lets you access external storage as read-only. You have to pay, but don't need to be rooted. I'm using a 32Gb microsd class 10 and it works great as read/write and streaming with Stickmount.
64GB Sandisk microsdxc the N7 will read if microsd card formatted in NTFS using stickmount. Mine works fine.

I think I will manage to use it without stickmount.
I'm running a kernel that sais it will automount hotplug usb support. Does this mean that it will automount it just like stickmount pro does?
didn't actually get to test that OTG cable yet, maybe tonight.
Also, what do you think of the Rescan Media app? it's supposed to start the Media Scanner service on android and inform mx player and winamp about the .avi and .mp3 files on your sdcard or flashdrive.

Yeah stickmount pro is the way to go, my 500GB portable Samsung HDD works fine but wouldn't on my Galaxy S3 until I flash Siyah kernel again, I use Trinity kernel on my Nexus 7 and no problems
OTG cable - External HDD or whatever you use - stickmount pro and away you go.

I'm using "nexus media importer" on my unrooted device. It isn't a free app but if you just want to try it before buying, you can try the dev's free app "gallery connect preview". Make sure your usb memory stick has pictures on it . Open the app before connecting the usb stick. I had to try a few times till the app recognized my cardreader and sd cards. Without root i can't change files on the external memory, but at least i can watch movies and open files from it.
I don't know if the sd cards are in FAT or NFTS. I just take it out of my dslr camera and plug it in the cardreader connected to my OTG cable.

How to run Fire TV apps from an External USB Drive

After trying a whole bunch of methods, here is the best way I've found to free up internal storage by moving apps to an external drive.
Complete step-by-step Guide with screenshots
tl;dr version:
1. Mount the drive with StickMount
2. Move the files and "trick" the Fire TV with FolderMount
does this work with XBMC?

Yes, you can move XBMC's data with this method. But since XBMC is so customizable, modifying advancedsettings.xml like JJ-KwiK suggests is a better option.
awesome, thank you!
Sweet! Thanks for the guide.

xbmc run well from external drive
Hi Guys
Just need some input w.r.t. flash drives and external drives.
What is the biggest size flash drive or external drive we can use on the AFTV?
Fat32 or NTFS file system?
Do you need a powered multi usb device to make the external drive work?
Must you use a powered external drive to make it work in the fire tv?
Hope someone can clear it up.
I connected a non powered multi usb device on the fire tv. the Rii keyboard with bluetooth usb and my 4gb flash both worked on it, but my 1.5TB 2.5" does not want to pick it up.

I'm using a 32GB USB Flash Drive and it works. It's NTFS. Spinning disk must be powered externally for both 2.5" or 3.5".
External SSD might work unpowered....I don't have a drive to test this theory.

I have two Toshiba 5400 RPM Canvio that are unpowered 2.5 and work fine, and a Seagate 500MB 2.5 in a cheapie external USB case that works fine as well.
Yeah I don't understand I've just found my Verbatim USB 3 external 2.5" works but my transcend external 2.5" doesn't. Both are the same size and both are NTFS. I checked and they both work on my PC. Guess it's luck of the draw for 2.5". I can't get an external 3.5" to work...Anyone else?

3.5 inch should be 12V so they would need an external power supply. As far as not seeing a powered 3.5 it could be one of a hundred different issues.

My 2TB 3.5" external works with a 12v power.
External Harddrive 3TB, 3.5" formatted as NTFS works fine for me.
Different sorts of USB stick's up to 32MB formatted as fat32 or NTFS gave me no trouble either.
Images gone after moving Thumbernails to USB stick
Hello,
I 'moved' the Thumbernails folder, using the advancedsettings.xml method. After a new scan run I see all the movie-descriptions, but I do no longer, see any images. They are just not shown..
Any idea, whats going wrong ? I'm really new to XBMC
edit:
After the scan, I deleted the whole content in Andtroid/.../userdata/Thumbernails. The folder itself is still there.
(6GB usb stick/NTFS)
edit2: solution found!
xbmc: System->File Manager->Profile directory->Database delete the Textures13.db and restart the xbmc.
All thumbnails are displayed again!
I tried this method with NFSMW which is approx 4gb after updating and it copied everything over the my usb BUT when i mount it the game says my usb storage device has no room for an update -_- (even though the directory copied is the most up to date version and capacity is 16gb) also, this method does nothing to free up space on the FTV. I had to go in manually to my android/data folder and remove the directory to free up space myself. Might want to add that to the description.

You are mistaken or did something wrong. FolderMount moves the files AND deletes the originals. If the files are set as "mounted" in FolderMount, it will appear as if they are still on the Fire TV. Meaning, if you "ls" the original directory in /sdcard/, you will see all the original files. However, the files are not actually on the Fire TV. To verify this for yourself, go to Settings > About to see your available free space before and after following my directions. You will see your free space increase.

then how are you guys making it possible ?
must the fire tv be rooted ? before this feature is possible.
i think this is an important topic. as the device is now rooted, alot users would download apps, and they would need the space.
I would like to use USB harddrive with my XBMC.
please advice.
