Hi,
This is kind of a basic question, but since I don't have a Transformer, I have no way to testing it. I've tested it on a Samsung before.
What do you see on the typical Windows XP machine when you plug your Transformer into it? Does it show up as a USB storage device? Can you move stuff directly from PC to Transformer?
I tried a Samsung Tab 10.1. I couldn't move anything into the Samsung, and it has no micro-SD card to use as alternate.
I'm using win 7 but it does what you describe when you plug it in...it's seen as a drive. (the MicroSD card that is.)
If you're running Windows XP with Media Player 11 installed (the easiest way to make it work in my experience), the Transformer shows up as a portable device in My Computer. You can move files to and from the device, but it's not assigned a drive letter (I think the SD card is if you have one). It's also not recognized as USB Mass Storage - Honeycomb doesn't connect that way.
The drawback is if you want to use utilities or apps that reference a drive letter (like iTunes Agent), it won't work. Also, because it's not USB Mass Storage, the tablet won't be recognized by simpler devices like the PS3 - therefore you cannot share data. I move data between my Galaxy S Captivate (2.2) and my PS3 all the time via USB cable, but I can't do it with my Transformer - though I've yet to try with an SD card installed.

Are you sure? Mine doesn't show as usb drive but as a mobile device. I can access both internal storage and microSD but with really bad transfer speed. How do you access the microSD as a drive?

Oh...maybe it does...I assumed that since it showed up as storage that it was a drive...I assumed that it was the same thing.
Thanks for the quick responses.
Interesting that both Samsung Tab and Transformer are running basically the same OS, but for some reason the Samsung Tab 10.1 won't let me put files in it via USB. It doesn't have a micro-SD slot, so it's a big problem.
Why, wonder why the big difference between the two if they're the same Android 3.1.
Has anyonebeen able to connect successfully an hard drive to TP?
I've tried by all manners without success, even with the docking ... no luck.
Would thisbe possible if we root TP?
for your usb drive to be mounted by the thinkpad, it has to be formatted in fat32. not fat or ntfs.
Ive got 2 hard drives (1terabyte and 500GB) with loads of data on them and are both formatted ntfs. I connected them to my thinkpad, they powered up but did not mount. I wasn't ready to reformat my hard drives with data on them so i didn't try.
However, I think I've got a 2GB usb stick lying around somewhere . I'll format it to fat32 and post some feedback here later.
oh and before trying, go to settings-->storage and enable usb storage devices. otherwise no device would mount on the tablet. even when formatted properly
as darkhandsome18 mentioned, yes but the harddrive has to be formatted in Fat32. Windows XP, Vista, and 7 don't allow you to format harddrives over 32GB within windows. However, you can use a thirdparty utility to format drives that are over 32GB in size to Fat32.
i personally use Fat32formatter (its commandline based) to do this w/my drives.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/FAT32format.shtml
i did verify that my 1TB external usb harddrive did mount on the TPT, i have not tried to run any videos or music from it though.

i have tried 4 ext HDD (ntfs and fat32), and all of them is not working.... (except for draining my battery for powering the HDD.. )
but for usb flash drive, that is a different matter, is it easily recognized by my TPT..
there is 1 unique problem that occurred to me, while trying to copy files from/into my TPT, there's a notification that file copy is successful, but when i check the file, it's size is 0 bytes..
this has happened to me 3-4 times, unfortunately, i dont know where's the "glitch" is coming from, as i can't replicate the problem anymore (i haven't got any update at all)
I have 2 different 500gb 2,5" drives. My samsung drive works fine playing music on the TPT. The WD drive I have only works sometimes strangly enough.
Normally when I use playback from hdd I use my supercharger power which connects throught the docking port or else the TPT just gets sucked dry of power as the hdd draws almost 500mA's.

If your external drive is formatted at fat32 and has its own power source, you will have success using it with the TPT. But if you are depending on the tablet's USB port to supply enough power to spin the disks in the external hard drive, you will get varying results, depending on the power requirements for your external drive. USB flash drives work fine because they have no moving parts and a low power requirement. As zeb crs stated, you see a huge power drain on your tablet when trying to use an external hard drive without its own power source.

I've finally got my 32GB class 10 sdcard a few days ago and immediately formatted it, etc etc.
I've been used to using my android phone(s) as a mass storage device when connecting to my laptop/computers before, but now, with the S3, I notice its not technically a mass storage device, but MTP.
My problem is, after transferring over some of my movies in HD, mostly mp4 formats, I can't seem to do so anymore with the other movies I want to transfer. I've gotten 6 movies; which is a total of 11gb worth... But everytime I try to transfer another movie file, I get an error message saying MTP application has stopped working / responding [WAIT] or [CLOSE].
Does anyone know what could be the problem? Is there other ways of transferring my movies into my sd card? I've tried a card reader, but it seems that it just shows up as a dead file in my card after placing in my phone.
Did you buy it off Ebay? Very well possible you have a counterfeit card if so.

It's not the card. I'm able to transfer my high res photos into my phone (4,xxx X 3,xxx res photos) no problem, as well as other files. It's the fact that if the file is larger than, say, 600-900MB, MTP goes wacky and ends up not responding, thus, not being able to transfer.
Doing some research and I read how mass storage usb has been removed. I was unaware of this and am trying to transfer music files from my computer to my phone. Is there anyway I can accomplish this; besides removing my SD card and putting it in my old galaxy 1 which had mass storage? Also, how are people able to transfer all their pictures and vids from phone to pc?

I don't know about the problem with MTP crashing on you but for your problem with dead files showing up on your phone, myself and another user here had the same problem and it was solved by formatting the card to FAT32.
So I have a 64gb sandisc u1 card, in partition magic it shows the usable space as a partition in between a small set of unpartitioned space and a large set.
All space = 2tb

You tried to download file biger than 64 gb on this card?
I didnt mod it yet. Its from bestbuy and leget in size reporting 59gb currently. I do not buy flash memory off ebay. I do not reformat flash drives in ways that I am uneduacted about [increasing size that is, im well versed in partition magic]
I know my 16gb class 4 kingston never did anything like that, it showed leget always.

Where is a file larger than 64gb? Not even a 3d high def video lol

Well you can always download several large files and see till where u can copy
What file system is being used? Windows doesn't like FAT32 drives over 32GB. It will R/W to them fine but refuses to format them. 2TB is the maximum size for FAT32 drives IIRC so that is probably where you are getting that number from. I own a 64GB microSD and my advice would be to format it in an Android phone and once done it should report something like 59GB space available.
It dose this on fat 32, exfat, or ntsf
Partition magic dose not equate windows formaring tool

I'm getting a similar problem,
I need to format my SD card with 2 partitions for my phone, for a link2sd app
but my 64gb Micro SD is showing as 27gb when i put it in my computer

I thought Fat32 supported up to 4TB?
It might. I know for a fact it will do 2tb I have a 4tb drive half ntsf half fat32

Have you tried looking at it with another partition editor? Does your hardware that you are using to read the card support SDXC properly? I highly doubt that it has more than the advertised 64GB of space, considering what a loss that would be for them to manufacture.
Fixed for Samsung 32gb class 10 uhs-i
My new Samsung 32gb Plus class 10 uhs-i also showed up as a 2TB drive with a 32gb fat32 partition in partition magic I even upgraded to the latest version of PM but it still showed as 2tb
I fixed it by swapping the usb adapter I was using :victory: now shows as a 32gb drive in PM It would have been nice to have a 2tb card though  If you are using a card adapter this also may cause errors if the card reader in the pc is old or has out of date firmware mine just plain refused to read it so hardware problem rather than software
Hope this helped :good:
If you bought the 64GB card and it showed as 2TB on computer display, 99.99% was the computer-end problem such software reading incorrectly.

Dude it was 150% certain the USB Card reader & not the software I speak from actual experience & not something I found on Google.
Some older or cheap card readers do not display the correct values back to the software. The built in drivers of some USB card readers cannot accommodate these new type's & size of card. Exactly the same issue can exist with the built in pc & laptop card readers that's why you may have to make sure the driver is up to date if the size reads strangely :good:

Firstly, what I meant was it is NOT the uSD itself that causing the problem or the confusion.
Secondly, FYI, "The built in drivers of some USB card readers" is a piece of software. I hope you understand what the driver is
Check if the partition table is a MSDOS one.. And upgrade your drivers..
I love windows for that.. it found a flash drive size of -2147483647... No, this flash drive didn't destroy 2GB of my hard drive x)
Formatting error...
This has happened before.
There was a chinese website where you could buy 2TB USB Sticks, but they were just 8GB sticks re-formatted to 2TB and they didnt function as 2TB.
I believe something like this may have happened.
You need to run tests for this, try seeing how much space there is using different programs that expore it.
If possible, try and accumulate files that are over 64GB in space, some movies/games/torrents etc. and copy them to the card.
If it's more, then lucky you
Peace,
shandy1996
I give up
Advice rejected by people who all know better than I.
Waste your time by all means & mess with the software of your pc. Overload the sdcard and screw it permanently :crying:
Maybe you could just try a different USB card reader simplz

I've been trying to transfer files to my external sd card with es explorer over wifi and also with usb from my pc. Every time the screen goes off I lose the connection and the transfer stalls and won't resume.
The card was formatted on the tablet, and is exfat. Windows doesn't recognize it and says it can't format it.
Any ideas?

More info would help us to help you.
What kind of pc, what OS, what adapter are you using for computer, what brand sd card, how big are the files, are you doing other tasks on the computer when transfering the files and have you tried reformatting on your tablet.

Except for small files, I don't use ESFile Manager to transfer them, and for me it's just as easy to pop the MicroSD card out of the tablet and put it in a fast USB 3.0 card reader than connecting the tablet to my PC with its data cable at USB 2.0 speeds. I don't do this for my Note phone because I'd have to take my multi-layer Seidio case and and back cover off to access the MicroSD card, but with the tablet the card is more easily accessible.

How is your microSD formatted? NTFS or exFAT?
I am using windows XP, standard USB cables (that came with the device), large files (movies, tv shows) of over 10gigs some of them.
it may be something as simple as my usb port on the laptop, just wondering more about transfers stopping when the tablet goes to sleep?
air droid seems pretty neat, but 100mb limit per month?
You guys should check out Samsung Link. It allows you to access/transfer/stream content from any device it's running on from any Wi-Fi network. It also works over 3/4G.
Oh yeah, it's a 64gb adata micro sd

Windows XP will not support EX-FAT unless you have update (WindowsXP-KB955704-x86-ENU.exe) found here. 3.2 mb download http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=19364 For 32 bit.

It's a Samsung 64GB SDXC card formatted exFAT. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit on a i7 based PC I just custom built, so it's USB 3.0 and very fast. I came from an old dual core Windows XP desktop PC (that I also built), so I know what you're feeling. Previously I would just sync or copy stuff over WiFi all the time without really noticing much of a speed difference over directly connecting my tablet/phone to my PC via a cable. But now whenever I can use my USB 3.0 card reader I do it because it's night and day different in terms of speed.
i reformatted it with windows, files are tranferring at ~13MB/s over USB2.0. Painful yes, but at lerast they are copying
i have yet to see if it works in the tablet after things are copied over. definitely easy to manage from within windows with teracopy pro, but would be nice if i could use es explorer over wifi on my home network and let the copies go overnight without waking up to failed transfers because the device went to sleep during the transfer....
.... Aaand now the tablet won't recognize the card. Should have formatted with the device, not the computer

thank you for the link.....XP recognized the card after installing the driver
i then formatted it exFAT and then i went ahead and copied over a couple 8 or 10gb files and a bunch of 1.5gb files. suddenly windows said the write delay failed and now i cant see the card in windows or the tablet.
this is getting off topic, but how do i now get anything to recognize the card? this is frustrating!

XP can return that error when moving large files esp. when you have write caching enabled. You could turn that off but it slows down you file cache.
I have also had errors in Windows 7 when moving to many large files at one time. I think the chip over heats as mine does get hot some times when I transfer large files in computer with adapter.
