I've been using my trusty Nexus One for 2 years now, and I rooted and plagued it with custom roms since day 1 and stands strong till this day....however I want a new phone.
The Note appeals to me very much. I like the Note a lot, but the size....just seems too impractical?
Is it practical for field work? Like sales reps?
I don;t want the SG2 as everyone I know has it....i like to be different! XD
Suggestions?

I had a Nexus One for 2 years and thought about getting a new phone.
galaxy nexus was 4 weeks away and it didn't have a sdcard slot (I use about 7gb for spotify, 5gb for offline maps, Podcats, Gamefiles, etc.).
In the meantime the Note came out and I gave it a try.
It's great, love it.
The size is fine for me.
I would have a Nexus if the Nexus was first. But don't know how I would have get around the 16gb.
i went from a G2 which is around the same size as the Nexus One, and i've owned a Nexus one as well.
anyway, you won't have any trouble with the phone for 'field' use. with the exception of everyone stopping and asking you where you got that gigantic phone. maybe consider getting a case for the phone as it feels too thin for as large as it is when your trying to get it out of your pocket.
The Galaxy Nexus should be your choice, you might find it hard to live with a non google reference device.

he's talking about the infrequent software updates. so far development on this phone has been somewhat lacking compared to the Galaxy Nexus and the SGSII. or maybe they're just waiting for better ICS sources. either way it's troubling at the moment.
Well it's still a niche phone. Not many people will use something this large. I however LOVE it. I did have an issue with my first one as the screen would pulsate a green hue. I didn't want to be a whiner but eventually decided to send it back. GLAD I DID! The new one I got has a much better screen with whites and no issues. It's good.
However I recommend it for people with larger hands and I highly recommend getting one of those TPU cases with the grips on the side. It makes it MUCH easier to handle.
Just moved from the outdated 4.3" HTC HD2. It was a window phone and the biggest at that time. A good phone with lots of possibilities and can port Android and also Window 7. A great feature of that phone is the ability to use dedicated GPS such as Garmin, Papago etc - a feature I missed in the Android.
I am new to Android and just got my note over a week ago. I love the enlarged screen and seem to function as small tablet. I am not familiar with using Google map as a GPS and realized that it is not so detailed in my country. So I am still using my HTC HD2 for navigating here.
All said, I still love this Note and size is not a problem with me. Now I can defer getting the Tablet and need not carry too many devices.
I use a belt pouch to carry it around and have to problem with it.
came from a nexus one as well. The N1 screen size made browsing and gaming pointless and chore-ish for me. I really wanted to get an ipad2 but didn't really like its low res screen, and was afraid I would get a new phone as well to replace the aging N1. Then the note came out, made perfect sense to me.
Everyone asks about the phone, most love the size but are afraid it's too big to pocket, and then I show them it fits even in my slim-fit levis.

Updates and developments are better and faster on a google reference device. I could possible by the most trouble free device ever as far as andriod is concerned.
So I bit early last week on a N4 16gb when they first went available again, and since then it seems like the people who are receiving the last batch of the initial stock are posting reviews and Impressions of the device and aren't totally smitten. Whether it be rattling, the glass back, overheating, buzzing in earpiece and non-optimization of 4.2 it was scaring me a little.
What i was wondering, was which phones people felt were the best option for T-mobile. The keys i was taking into account were:
•strong processor (min. Dual core)
•decent to big battery
•high res. Screen (and at least 4.3")
•good video/gaming playback
•decent volume (doesn't feel tiny on headphones on high)
•should be semi safe with updates for next 2 years.
I am in the middle of a mobile contract with a Htc Radar 4g, and its just not enough for me and leave me wanting. So am looking for a phone that could potentially survive at least another 2 years. I was thinking of options like the note II, gsIII, HTC one international (w/ non-gba card), gnex. The only thing i will rule out is the iPhone because i have a PC, no offense to iPhone users.
So tell me your opinions and views.....if this thread should be moved elsewhere i allow the moderators to move it otlr let me know and let me know how to move it.

I think you should think about whether you actually care about these things.
Rattling - basically non-existant, you can't even hear it unless you litterally shake your phone right next to your ear repeatedly.
Glass Back - This is user preference
overheating - pretty sure this only occurs during benchmarking?
buzzing in earpiece - I dunno about this
non-optimization of 4.2 - i'm sure all phones are getting 4.2 eventually so this part might not even apply specifically to the Nexus 4.
I've now lived with a 16gb N4 for about five days and I think it's the best phone on Tmo by a country mile.
Like you, I upgraded from an HTC Radar (actually liked that phone quite a bit), but I carefully tested all of the contenders currently available on Tmo and available unlocked. I opted for the N4 from Google Play.
I guess there may be a rattle but I honestly didn't notice it until I read about it (and I'm still not sure I hear it like some hear it). I've been shocked at how fast and buttery smooth Jelly Bean is. It really is awesome.
Hardware feels more elegant than other Android devices I've felt... Screen is beautiful and battery life has been fine for me (lasts a full day of moderate use).
I dunno. Maybe it's still honeymoon but I'm happy with it!

I just came from the HTC Radar and the Nexus 4 is an amazing update, not even looking back
I agree with the rest of them. N4 is the best, and I came from an International Galaxy SIII (i9300).
N4 had two updates in the first week I got it. Guess how many OFFICIAL updates my Galaxy SIII has had in 6 months? 1.
N4 by far thanks to Tmo's 3G network, on ATT it is a little less desirable (~3Mbps download is downright average) but I would NEVER consider getting a phablet like the note and I prefer stock android to any skinned version.

The n4 is all of those things you are asking for.
To address your gripes:
Rattling: it's the auto focus mechanism. Many phones do this, is meant to happen. You probably won't notice it unless you are looking for it.
Buzzing: I've heard about this, my phone doesn't have the issue.
Glass back: personal preference
Overheating: I have been playing games, no heat issues to report.
The only thing that has been happening, which was also happening on my GNex with 4.2 is a rare soft boot crash. The X pops up out of nowhere. I would imagine an ota will fix it.
Glad to get home from work (posted this while on break) and to see that there have been several replies, and without any infighting at that. Good for this thread, pat yourselves on the back ladies and gents.
To follow up on a few things, I loved my Radar when I first got it, HTC makes excellent phones, and many people (not super high end phone people) were surprised by how nice the screen was, just dismayed by the side...the unfortunate drifting island that is windows 7.5 is what made me start looking for a replacement. As well as the ability to easily recoup the money that I would spend on an N4.
To those of those that touted how much they liked the N4, have you had any issues at all. I know some touched on not having the same issues that i mentioned. The yellow tinted screen is something else I have seen mentioned. Of those who have the phone how many are from THE 1ST BATCH of sales. Am curious to see if there is a chance that most of the problems were with the 1st batch, or possibly foreign made batches.
It looks like it is going to to be a good match, but still want to hear more and from people who haven't posted.
For those that came from the sIII, note or gnex, what do you like more about the N4 through your use already.....and any suggestion on cases?

The only main issue that you need to debate if you can handle it with the nexus is the buzzing/ crackling noise from earpeice. Some say it's doesn't matter, because they can't hear it, but some phone have it worse then other. I have two nexus 4 here and one is not noticeable, while the other is quite loud. Also Yellowing spot on the phone when it gets warm which happen when you play game or watch a hd movie for a bit. The yellow spot is most likely a hardware issue, it's not the same as a yellow tint which you may also get.

I asked here for honest opinions, people who have the N4 and are getting replacements or are having to deal with the issues and stomach it would be open to stating if they love the phone or feel regret.

It seems from reading that you either get the the yellow spots or the yellow tint, if anyone is getting the yellow tint, is it consistent or off and on, and do you think they will call for a recall due to any of these issues?
Note 2 IS THE BEST at the moment in terms of specs
But N4 is still a good choice, more budget friendly AND it may lose in specs on paper, but it has yet to crash and is SILKY SMOOTH.
also not to bash on note 2, but my friend just got it and i had a few minutes to play with it....but after using pure android (came from sg2), note 2 felt VERY bloated and sometimes slow (note this is on stock)
BTW i have no issues with my phone, but other have said that you can always do a rma thru google. and ofc tmobile honors factory defects as well.

Note 2 has better camera front and back also has a micro sd slot also note 2 has the best battery life.

Also although we(n4) have the same CPUs and GPU as the LG optimus G, when the Optimus G is compared with the note 2 they were basically a even match with the note 2 slightly ahead in some of the benchmarks. Now we know the optimus G is one hell of a phone and we should also too right? But with the currently thermal throttling/overheating, we arent even up to the optimus G level yet.

i know benchmarks dont mean sh1t but same with specs looks good on paper but it doesnt reflect its daily usage.

This requires more of an depth response than I currently have time for, I'll post again later tonight. Very quickly, I really like the LGOG, but I just have some niggles that are killing me, and most of them I *think* would be solved on the N4.

I haven't tried the LGOG but they are essentially the same internal components except the LGOG has what I hear is a pretty mediocre 13 megapixel camera. I don't like the LGOG design because it's more square-ish and the rounded look of the Nexus 4 is much better but that is a matter of taste. Stock JB could solve some of your problems if they are software related, from what I hear Motorola's and LG's android skins are not very good.
Havent had the Otimus G but it looks like a very very good phone...But if you switch to the N4 you wont regret it...Development is gonna go crazy for this phone...theres so many Devs that I know that are coming to this phone who are just waiting to get one...this N4 forum is already great with very helpful people and its only gonna get better so if you looking to tweak and rom out...this is the spot...believe me!!!

AT&T LGOG has the 8MP cam, as well as an SD slot, and LTE. I thought the AT&T LGOG looked better than the N4, but I haven't held an N4. LG's Android skin is okay. Not as intrusive as Sense, but not as silly as Touchwiz. I never use the stock launcher on a phone, so with the LG you can't notice it much.
I don't have LTE around here, so that's not an issue. Performance wise the AT&T LGOG is superb for the most part. Even with ICS. Its the smoothest/fastest Android device I've used. (I've used a TON, all the big players except the new DNA)
HUGE deal breaker for me is the notification LED on the AT&T LGOG. Its a small ring around the power button. Can't see it. Ever. Also its not multi-colored. Then you put a case on it, even the Belkin bumper, and its completely covered up. Gone.
My WiFi performance is horrible. The range seems very short, and it never wants to automatically connect. Not just my home network, but several others. Then when I manually try to do something, it usually gets stuck in a half off/half on state, and I have to reboot. This could be a software issue that could very easily get fixed in the future.
A lot of us are having insane battery issues. Myself, if I'm SUPER lucky, I get 10hrs. Android OS is always at the top, by far. The screen isn't ever at the top no matter how much you use it. Some are saying its a 3G fast dormancy issue. I've got LTE disabled. I'm also running a no bloat ROM, with a kernel that's under-volted. Again, software issues that are probably going to be fixed eventually.
Which brings me to my last issue. Dev support. The bootloader is unlocked, and that's awesome. If you look in the dev section, we have ONE rom. If you look in the Original dev section, we have ONE kernel. I have no idea if the AT&T version is going to take off or not, but its off to the slowest start I've ever seen on a new device of this caliber. Also I'm missing JB. I'm really REALLY missing AOKP. Some of the best times I ever had on an Android device was my GNex w/AOKP.
So this is where I'm at. Give up a better looking phone (yes yes, debatable) LTE, (which I don't have anyway) and the SD slot, to gain a MUCH better notification LED, JB 4.2, WAY WAY more dev support, and obviously faster updates. (I've had Nexus phones before, hell I still have an N1)

Very good post Boosted...so are you considering switching since you love AOKP???...we got it here and I read that is pretty good...Im running PA7 with is awesome...very smooth and stable...

Design is a matter of taste, agree there.
I gave up LTE. I had 15-20 Mbps and now I have 3-7 Mbps. I only notice the difference when I try to download big files. I can barely notice the difference when I watch HD videos. My brother has a Nexus 4 on T-mobile and he averages 15-20 Mbps. I am in San Diego BTW.
I got the 8GB version and I don't need more than that. I carry an iPhone 3G as a PMP and I just got a $50 HTC One V that I am switching to. I am trying to move my Music and Videos to the cloud but the slower data is a little bump in the road.
I think LG HAD to make a top of the line phone for AT&T so they came out with the LGOG but knew that it wasn't going to sell too well. I still haven't seen an add for one. I am pretty sure that the average consumer does not go into the store with the knowledge of the LGOG even existing.
The Nexus 4 is probably going to be one of the top 3 phones with dev support, probably only behind the GS3. Since the LGOG from AT&T doesn't even seem to be the same version from other GSM version you can bet there's going to be a VERY small dev support.

Someone said that benches were probably not optimized for the hardware and 4.2, haven't tried myself or seen any new benches.
I like it. The device feels solid. I never owned a Gnex but it felt plasticy just like most Samsung device including my old Note. I am really not concerned about the glass but I take REALLY good care of all my devices. I like the design. I always put a case on my phones but I like this design too much to cover it up so I just got screen protectors for the front and back. I hear people saying it scratches if you put it on a counter but then again doesn't all glass scratch? The software is fast, smooth, snappy, etc... It's stock, it's great. I haven't even found a reason to install a different ROM.
Device feels very great...super fast...no lag at all...Im very happy I decided to go for the N4...I have no complaints at all...

I'm gettting about 6mbps down with the LGOG. As long as the N4 gets close to that, I'm fine. I'm on WiFi most of the day.
You haven't seen the commercial with the guy making the action scene in a movie w/the AT&T LGOG? I've seen it several times. But, NO one around me knows about the LGOG, the SGSIII is the big one right now. ( I had the international version on launch day, great phone) I get asked all the time "why did you get of your SGSIII???" as they look at me like a befuddled puppy.
I would think the N4 should be THE top dev phone, its a Nexus after all? (phone for devs) The GNex dev section was nuts.

Yeah, I stopped using cases awhile back, and started using Ghost Armor. But with this phone I didn't wanna cover it up, so it got nothing. Then I found the Belkin bumper case, and tried that. Not bad, but I wouldn't do it again. Personally I like the glass. Gives it a spiffier, heavier feel. But then again I liked the thin light feel of the SGS2, Gnex, and SGS3. I'm not real picky about style/feel. Although I can't stand HTC's layout. The power button on top makes me want to throw the phone. (I did like the One X though, other than the power button and Sense)
I am however a flash/customization-aholic. I was really banking on the AT&T LGOG dev support taking off more than it has.

You haven't seen the commercial with the guy making the action scene in a movie w/the AT&T LGOG? I've seen it several times. But, NO one around me knows about the LGOG, the SGSIII is the big one right now. ( I had the international version on launch day, great phone) I get asked all the time "why did you get of your SGSIII???" as they look at me like a befuddled puppy.
I would think the N4 should be THE top dev phone, its a Nexus after all? (phone for devs) The GNex dev section was nuts.

I am a big smart phone fan in general but even I didn't know about the LGOG until people started saying that the Nexus 4 was going to be pretty much the same thing as the LGOG. Maybe I did hear about it but I didn't care, I wasn't too happy when I heard LG was making the next Nexus device. LG is just not too good at marketing their products and making customers even consider getting an LG product. If you don't get LTE in your area then I think the Nexus 4 is a no brainer. You may even get faster speeds on HSPA+, some people get about 10-15 Mbps on their Nexus 4. I am in an LTE market so I am screwed, AT&T is not going to develop their HSPA+ network anymore here.
Yeah I'm leaning towards getting the N4. I wish someone who's had both could post. The LED and JB w/dev support alone is enough to convert me. LTE is useless, and I will slightly miss the SD slot.
Any WiFi or battery issues?
I see you can actually order one now, but its 6-7 weeks out!! It will be old news by then!

This is outdated. Starting with the Optimistic G, LG's skin is now in "Not Awful, But Bulky" territory, and Motorola's skin is actually quite good (starting with the Atrix HD and other ICS-based devices), and provides some genuine functional improvement on AOSP without any real downsides.
So I have been waiting for Google IO to see if there are any updates for the phone itself or a new phone but it seems more and more there won't be anything big, or it may just be an LTE version. I have no need for LTE at this present time.
There is a good deal today on ebay for a Nexus 4 for international shipping and I want to know whether I should go for it or rather wait till after I/O?
Opinions?
Just get it now , its a good phone and it will last you , at least that's how I feel about my nexus . also if the deal is that good , then yeah get it , make sure the imei is clean and there is no problems , have fun ! :thumbup:

I could easily see a battery upgrade which is the Achilles heel for this phone.
This has always been a problem with phones: not daring to buy a new one because something else, something possibly better, may be coming up. But trust me: the Nexus 4 is a great phone with great specs and still has updates to come for ages. And about the battery life: with the right mods you'll get through 1,5 day.
You won't be disappointed and if you keep on looking towards newer models, then you'll never get yourself a new one.

it will be a long while before the nexus 4 feels outdated, it is still top end spec for crying out loud.

Battery performance is lackluster compared to other devices, 3G/HSPA WILL murder even on stanby
New Nexus is obviously close and may have better storage
Camera is mediocre
The SoC has wakelock issues from the USB modem and certain sleep states are broken
No 4K support(may want?)
Development will slow down significantly after next nexus or new Moto X
Lack of stock LTE support
Call quality is terrible even if you manually use AMR
Thermal throttle is difficult to avoid, thing can heat up in basic apps

I do not agree with this person. Even when I have everything going and a ton of apps sinking in the back ground I get 8 to 12 hours use with around 3.5 hours screen on time with the screen at fifty percent. I have no issues with phone getting hot unless I am using the camera led as a notification tool in lite flow. If I do the normal things like uninstall apps I don't use and sign out of the other apps I get 20 hours easy and about 4 hours screen on time. My normal is 30 hours and 3 hours screen on time
There is little out there that out specs this phone. And being this a clean version of android and doesn't have touch wiz or HTC sense on it my phone seems to blow away even the s4.

Battery life is as always ...subjective
Google is promoting his cloud storage policy , I agree with it and this is the future ...
Camera isn't mediocre , is average ...
lack of ... LTE support for a phone which doesn't support it ...
Call quality is is good , not terrible , better then what I've used before ( HTC touch pro , wildfire , HTC HD 2 , s2 and s3 )

There's nothing better out there in terms of Android software support. Even if you sell it a few months down the road, you'll still get a good price for it since it is a Nexus and it will hold it's value.
This phone is future proofed. Go for it.

I don't think it's the hottest device around anymore. HTC and s4 are the hottest devices at the moment in my opinion.

yes OP! Go try the other phones first, BUT if you want the smoothest phone around with No bloatware, the greatest specs all around with a price no one can beat, you might as well ! Some people say the hype about HTC one is almost at end Aside from the aluminium casing and the specs, nothing else would be exciting.

I said the battery was bad relative to other devices, for instance the S3 gets at least 4. And temperature concerns have been mentioned by many others besides myself even on xda, it is not limited to myself.

I said the device has no supported LTE, nothing is wrong with that statement. It would make sense for them to support a modern medium

I just found it lacking compared to my Sensation, people always complain they can't hear me.

But if an even better device was to be announced the OP would be kicking himself like someone else said. I find the S4 Pro to be a double edged sword, you get A15 like performance but there are actual design issues that Faux has mentioned such as the wakelock for the usb and the sleep states.

I can't believe you guys are advocating to not wait 10 days just in case. We don't know for sure whether a nexus 5 will be released. I'm not saying anyone should wait 6 months. Anyone should be hesitant to buy a smartphone that's 6 months old
IMO it is very unlikely that we'll see a Nexus 5 in some days, a new version of the Nexus 4 seems much more likely to me. Either way I would wait these 10 days until I/O. But keep in mind that what we will see at I/O will not be available in the stores right away...

Thanks for the input guys. Note that I am definitely only going for the Nexus purely because of the price, it's way cheaper than anything else close in aesthetics and performance.
Just wanted to know whether to wait to see if maybe there is an improvement at I/O, which I think I will do.

If you want to deal with Touchwiz, Sense or broken AOSP ROMs then sure, the S4 and One are hot devices.
hi all , i am looking for a reason to move to latest hardware of phone but i also think nexus 4 is pretty much ok-ish considering it can run anything without any hiccups and the interface is silky smooth , not trying to fuel the throw away culture but when will be the time to move to next phone ?

When any of these occur:
1) The device fails
2) It won't do the stuff you need it to
3) You want a new one and have the money
Personally, I expect to get another full year out of this device... My personal plan unless something fails to work properly is start looking for something new in the summer of 2015, it should be more than sufficient until then.

You don't have to throw it, just sell it... either locally, or I would also recommend swappa.com, you should be able to get $200-$270 for it depending on condition.
Or send it to me... I will pay the shipping, better than throwing it away, and I will make good use of it.
I recommend you the G2 if you sell the Nexus 4....it's better than Nexus 5 and if you want AOSP there will be AOSP roms for sure, i think it has a big community
Its definitely good for at least 2 Google updates and has good specs for running most apps.
After that there will probably be some unofficial updates ported from other devices.
Which means it could well be good for a few years yet as long as it lasts that long.
Its a good phone with still quite decent specs so I wouldn't worry to much about it becoming dated.

thanks for the advice , how long do you think apps will support the hardware of nexus 4 ? i mean the phones with less software can run most apps ,so n4's 2 gig of ram and quadcore as well as adreno 320 can last another year ?

it has a tiny crack on the front camera which isnt big deal only causes a small white halo and the headpiece makes a static sound rest of it is ok , few scratches here and there . so with that whats the ideal selling price ? i paid 400 $ for it when i bought it

N4 hardware won't be outdated for a long time....there are still lots of Dual core phones (2013+) that have no problems with apps....
and as ART gets more and more development the N4 hardware will work even more efficiently!
Basically like the others.... Until it either croaks, or worse, the software gets too outdated to run the latest software.
Having a Nexus 7 (2013 and 2012 models) also takes the load off of my phone, letting it be what it is supposed to be: a phone. Storage is a little low, but I don't carry around a bunch of music so that's not a big issue for me.
The Nexus 4 is the first phone I've had in a while that I wasn't itching to get rid of.
The original granddaddy, the G1: I hated how I couldn't see the keyboard in bright daylight... because of the silver keys on the bronze model. It was also a bit slow, but not as a big of an issue at that time as few apps were very demanding. Had to sell it in a financial crunch...
The MyTouch3G (32b): Hated it from Day 2. By the time I bought this, apps were demanding more memory. Music would randomly stop playing in the background as the memory manager executed things without discretion. It made calls. Just about anything else was a pain.
Galaxy S Vibrant: It was OK, I suppose. This was when each carrier still got their own version of the Galaxy S, as well. T-Mobile's version always lagged behind in software, and was abandoned way too early. The GPS could NEVER get a lock. Ever. And, I hated how everyone thought it was an iPhone.
LG / T-Mobile G2X. First dual core phone my ass. It seemed fast out of the gate, but turned out to be slow at the stupidest things. Games and benchmarks would fly, but no matter what ROM I installed - stock or otherwise - it was just SLOW at daily functions. Often it would get "busy" doing something (no idea WHAT) even with clean installs, and I'd have to pull the battery just to be able to use the phone. GPS was still terrible and frequently required reboots to lock. Then, again, it got abandoned on an old software version. LG had promised ICS, and never delivered. They later backtracked and said they'd only promised it for the LG Optimus 2X, not the G2X variant. The only difference was the radio, but the code was NEVER cracked and so no fully functional ICS could be provided... Between that and just how dog-assed slow it was... its only good point was near indestructibility.
Which brings me to the Nexus 4.... it does all the things right that I need. It responds snapily, it is reliable. Hasn't busted (yet) unlike the extremely fragile Nexus 7 2013.... Only downside is it was made by LG, for whom I have a hatred that transcends dimensions. A $199 price and Google's promise of support swayed me.

Buy a one plus one. It's 300$ for 16gb version and 350$ for 64gb version. It runs snapdragon 801 with 3gb ram. 5.5inch 1080p screen , Bluetooth 4.1, NFC and other features. It's runs cyanogen mod 11s. 13mp exymor camera , 5mp front camera. Both hardware and software navigation keys as per user settings.(user can change).
It will take a while before you can purchase it. only 100 units are for sale. They will soon start mass production.
