Dear Friends,
I'm having a rare problem with my S4.
All used to be fine but now suddenly the device turns itself off when it's stressed. By stressed I mean during a call while switching to another application or watching a video for more than a few minutes. To me it seems like a battery broken because once I unplug the AC cable and run the benchmark the phone shuts off and usually when it gets to the GPU/Video related tests. When I plug in the AC cable and run the test everything works as usual.
Also when the phone has turned off randomly the phone has problems booting up. It will get to the omega boot animation restart again. The intervals are always different. Sometimes the logo spins for a few seconds and then it reboots again, sometimes it happens right away when the logo appears. Its almost that the phone does not have enough juice to boot up eventhough the battery is charged with 40% or so.
Once I plug in the AC cable the phone boots up normally. I doubt that it's the custom Rom (Omega 9.0 with stock omega kernel) that is causing the problem. It seems hardware related. I'm guessing:
- GPU
- Battery
What do you think is causing those random turn-offs ?
Should I exchange the battery or flash stock rom to check if it still happens?
Why does it make a difference if the AC cable is plugged in? can it be anything that is not battery related?
I'd love to have your opinions!
Best,
Thomas

Your using XXUBMGA right? I had this weird problem where the screen wouldnt turn back on unless i pulled the battery. I switched to the german firmware and all is fine. Its not hardware, trust me, same prob.
First go to stock rom mate, then check

Weird thing is i was using stock, even though exxi is using a modified rom it might not play nice with root/custom kernels. Dont know for sure though; just what i have observed directly.
Friends,
I've installed the Pre-Rooted Stock Rom UBMGA via Odin. Cleaned the phone completely. It booted up and during the first Sign up process (google account, wifi network setup etc.) it went off again with 80% charge. When I plug it to the charger I can continue the setup normally. It seems that whenver it starts any GPU related process (Video animation, Antutu menchmark, Quadrant, Games) it turns off without warning. I ordered a new bat. hopefully it will arrive next week but until then I will not know if the issue is battery or phone related. at this point I doubt that it's ROM related. What's your judgement on this?
Best,
Thomas

Any news? I've had Omega v7 and like two weeks ago it started to turn off suddenly... I thought battery run of or something, later on when this turn off happened and I turned phone on I had "black screen of death" or what to call it.. no launcher but status bar was ok, when I dragged status bar down I could open settings and change "homescreen" to basic and than back to normal and it worked...but... I couldn't use home button, it just showed black window that disappeared immediately. I backed up data and flashed Omega v11, after "tutorial" just after choosing language it showed this black screen again, so I've begun being suspicious it's hardware related. Morning after that it was working okey. Well...not really.. in app list one page of app was showing shadows of icons instead of icons, when i scrolled trough all pages it fixed. Later that day it turned off again. No turning off omega symbol, just.. like if you pull out battery. And those shadow icons were on two app pages. I've flashed nandroid backup of original ROM and when I browse gallery fast it turn off again... I suppose it's hardware related as it's not stuck to specific ROM. Maybe wrong battery? but more like motherboard I think. It also broke my sd card, because of multiple power failures probably. Also after this turn off battery drops down for like 10% or more. First screenshot - shadow icons..second screenshot - battery % drop

i have the same problem with one of the last stock release, in last 2 days my phone's system was totaly burnt because i've played a lot with roms kernels and tweak, and it started to give me also this kind of problem. So i flash by odin one of last stock firmware and it's ok, after a few minutes i've rooted again the rom and charged phone from 19% (at this percentage the phone turn off) to 100%. it seems to be okay, but at 63% it turn off again, so i pull out battery for some minutes, and after it continues to turn of after a few seconds...
(one of the tweak that i made was using "battery calibration" it clean battery stas that can be damaged by skipping between various rom, i used it a lot on galaxy nexus but maby this can be one of/the reason of problem)
Have u resolved by changing the battery???
Dear folks,
It's a battery related problem. When I changed the battery for a mumbi type new battery the phone works with no turning off. Problem resolved

I bought this Hero off eBay, and it was dodgy since the begining.
The phone had cyanogen, and was restarting itself occasionally.
So i wiped it, installed 2.1 and it got fixed, but now i have a problem with battery drainage.
Its insance, 10minutes-10% im pretty sure its not supposed to be like that. with or without wifi/3d turned on, its just riddiculous.
I borrowed battery from a friend, and that didint make any change, i installed latest update from the autoupdate in the phone and still its bad. I read somewhere here that its faulty email app that keeps on trying to sync and drains battery, how do i fix that ?
I did a full wipe, cleared cache and everything back to factory settings, with no apps installed it goes from 100% to 0% in an hour.
I downloaded 2.1 from some android forum, as i was unable to find one here (there are only links to 1.5 on the xda.wiki WHY?)
If you can point me to a proper 2.1 (or higher?) software to download that doesnt do this crazy **** i'll be happy as infant on crack.
Please help, here is my software information:
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Baseband version: 63.18.55.06JU_6.35.09.26
Kernel version: 2.6.29-063c4d24

Try calibrating your battery it gave me a huge boost on my hero... went from getting 16hours day.. to about 30hours on a single charge!!
Every time you flash a new ROM you need to calibrate your battery. The battery meter in the OS (Android in this case) is generated based on the battery stats file.
Battery stats is erased when you flash a new ROM.
Easiest method of battery calibration when you're intending on flashing a ROM:
Ensure battery is fully charged according to the OS. Switch phone off, unplug charger and plug back in. Once light is green, leave charging for another 30 minutes (light goes green at approx 95% charge).
Switch on, flash ROM. Allow first boot to complete.
Shut phone off. Disconnect charger. Remove battery. Replace battery. Place on charge, light green, leave charging another 30 minutes, yadda yadda. Switch phone on, boot immediately to recovery. Wipe battery stats.
Boot phone up. Now would be a good time to install JuicePlotter. Use as normal. Do not charge, let the battery run down completely. When the phone shuts itself off, power it back on. Repeat process until it won't switch on anymore.
Remove the battery. Put the battery back. Turn the phone on. Repeat until it won't turn on anymore.
Now charge the battery on the mains to 100% while the phone is off, keep charging for 30 minutes after light goes green. Power on. Voila, fully calibrated battery.
The last part, run until completely dead and charge only needs to be done once in a while (this is calibrating the battery innards, not the battery stats)

hah, yea thats what i accidentally figured. phone was switching off, but when i powered it back on it had 30%.. and it was like that 3 or 4 times.
I ran it down completely and now am charging it till max, we'll see what happens. at worst i'lkl start your process from the beginning thx !
I diidnt know you had to do that. i've been playing with my G1 and not even once i had to calibrate that.. maybe i should
How'd it go? Any improvement on battery life?
it diidnt help I did what you quoted step by step and its still running down the battery like crazy :/ what else can i do ? im thinking of switching to 1.5 but thats just not progressive and my friends phone is running fine on 2.1, with the same battery even.
Edit: i've installed task killer and killed all the mail checking apps.. hope that is the problem
Edit2: it didint help at all, in 5 minutes i lost 15% fcuking hell !
I just switched to 1.5 and its still happening ! I using a different battery and its just as bad... why is this happening to me
ill try second to latest radio from xda wiki.. im running out of ideas, what else can i do ?
That really wierd... its not the battery if you have tried using different ones. Its not the ROM if u have changed it.
Have you tried disabling auto-updates? and auto-checks for emails. Which email client do you have? you should find the option to "sync-never" in the app settings.
Buying it from ebay is kinda ominous though.. was it described as faulty? perhaps you could contact the seller and request a refund is all else fails?
you can try using setcpu to underclock the cpu.
i have similar situation as you. before going to bed around 11pm, it showed 50% left, turned on airplane mode, then in the morning around 6am, phone was powered off.
now it has been 2 days, still have 20% left.

Did you ever take into consideration that some part of the hardware might be damaged?
Devices that got water damaged, sometimes show weird symptoms as well:
- They still boot up and seem to work well from the first sight
- The battery drains very quickly
- Some of the peripherals are not working stable or not starting up anymore (e.g. wifi, bt, gps)
- Other crazy things might happen as well (e.g. random reboots, backlight flicker, etc.)
So you might have a look at the mainboard. Red stickers indicate water damage!
Regards,
scholbert
Yea but if it were damaged would it show 50% battery after restarting thinking it had reached 5% ? i dont have the tools or will to unscrew it.
i paid 100 pounds fo it, the normal price of a used hero, but the auction said "phone restarts for no reason" and they do not accept returns, so im propably screwed :I
I had an old blackberry 8300 curve, i had it in the bathroom while i was showering, got too moist, turned the detection pads red but phone seemed to work fine after i dried it out. But the battery went to crap progressively in the manner. I would charge to 100%, take it off the charger and maybe an hour it would say less than 10%, do a battery pull and it would go back up to maybe 80% and last maybr another hour and keep doing that till it would normally drain on top od the numerous reboots i would be doing until eventually it would just drain and die.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Can dead pixels cause this ? i have like three.. but then again why would it show 50% after restarting from 5%..
the thing is its not draining the battery, just registering it wrong

sorry mate i have tried everything unsuccessfully and returned the phone to the seller.. dont tell me you bought it ? (london)
No, but i have a samsung galaxy tab and experience similar symtoms. It does not bother me too much, the battery life is still great. Just the percentage is off and i need to restart from time to time.
I read similar complaint from droid x forum too.
I installed on my oppo 5 pure AOSP, which i didn't like so I have decided to move to MIUI.
after moving to MIUI my phone started turning off by itself (screen goes black) and the only way to turn it back on is to connect it to a charger.
So i moved back to stable stock rom and still, moved to stock beta phone crashes.
thank I noticed that the crashes happens whenever the phone is connected to the WIFI or the mobile network data.
if both are off the phone is working steady, but the moment i put any of them on the phone crashes.
BTW it is only mobile network data, phone calls are still working without crashing the phone.
I need help!!!
edit #1: i installed cm10.1 and it doesn't crash when connected to WIFI, but mobile network doesn't work at all (no signal)
edit #2: even when i am doing a proper shutdown to the phone, i cannot power it on unless i connect it to the charger, battery is show more than %50

I have a similar problem. I suggest you full wipe and install latest beta.
If you have a second phone like me, try to use airplane mode then WiFi. If it still occurs then it is probably hardware.

OK, Cool.I need a full discharge log and a charge log (till battery hits 100% again).
Is this with airplane mode on?
the phone battery was draining quicker than before and after 11 hours of low usage, but the upside is that it was behaving fine during these hours. at the 11th hour the phone suddenly died while it was at %21.
now I am charging the phone while it is off until it will reach %100 and i will power it on and upload the logs.
I did not had a secondary phone at the time so i was still using it (well, I was visiting my family so I was eager to show off my new phone )

keep in mind that the strangest thing was that the phone died at %21

since than again a low usage until now 12pm the battery is at %19.

why it is off before getting to %0???

no signal and saviour
the no signal problem is a issue that appears on Cm10 and some other roms based on Cm you gotta reboot your device some times until the radio wakes up. the other problem , try to install Aospa ( paranoid android ) and wipe everything wipe factory and system also wipe dalvik cache and cache. install zip and Gapps ( or do the same method but install STOCK , u can find stock firmwareon the oppoforums )
Hope someone can help me solve this issue.
The Setup
I recently went out of the country and before I left I unlocked my GS4 following from wonderhowto[dot]com
Arrived to my Carribean destination, bought a prepaid SIM, popped her in and everything worked great.
Problems started when I flew back into Miami. I removed my prepaid SIM and installed my old one, changed my APN name back
and rebooted the phone. Decided to plug it into my laptop (USB3.0) to get some extra juice before the next flight and I noticed that
the battery was actually going down and quite quickly too, about 1% every 3 minutes. The phone was also doing a lot of connecting and disconnecting from the laptop even though it was not being moved.
I use two batteries which I have an external charger for , so this didn't slow me down too much.
After a few days, I thought maybe by unlocking the phone I had left it in some "roaming" state where it was eating up battery looking for its signal, so I decided that I'd restore it to the nandroid backup ROM Manager created before I did the unlock procedure. OH NUGGETS!
Things got ugly , quick!. In the process of trying to restore got MD5 mismatch error, so I went back to 3 previous backups before all of which said either "MD5 mismatch" or unable to open .zip -None of them worked.
Thankfully I had saved a copy of the backup folder in clockworkmod to my PC and tried to load that, it started and then get to writing /data and said error writing data.
I rebooted. Bootloop.
After a few hours of attempts with KIES, and some well timed cold beer deliveries from my wife, I finally got the phone back to stock version.
Rooted it again, motochopper, And loaded GoldenEye Rom v 8.0 . Still slow to little or no charging.
Loaded PACMAN and noticed something that should be mentioned.
Pacman rom has its own little battery widget that sits in the top tray and shows the %. It glows green from bottom to top to show that it is charging. I noticed on every couple of cycles, the battery meter would flash red for a quick second before turning green and sweeping up.????
Went back to a backup of GoldenEye8.
The current status
The phone is currently plugged in to the stock charger (2A) and stock cable. It has charged up only about 3% in 20 minutes time. I have it in battery saving mode with wifi on , and EVERYTHING else turned off.
Battery info says:
Temp 87.3 F
Voltage 4033mV
Plugged True
Charging
Li-ion
Health:Good
Charge Type : AC
Battery use shows 62% of battery use coming from SCREEN (Yes I have auto-brightness set, and NO live wallpaper)
Anyone have some good input?
Maybe its a bad cord? Or bad USB port/connection on the phone it self...
Sent from my SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 4
62% screen usage is normal, I sometimes see over 70% with my brightness all the way up.
Make sure apps aren't keeping it from going idle and staying active.
Battery temp. seems a bit high. General causes of that are a faulty cable.
Download greenify and hibernate any apps that may be running unnoticeably in the background.
If your kernel allows fast charging (disables access to phone storage while fast charging is on) enable it while charging if you're not using the phone.
Play with CPU and GPU governors in your kernel to save battery life. I.E: I put my CPU governor on "powersave" while idle and not using the phone for anything extensive.

Tried two other cords, but they just made it worse. They actually caused it to look like its charging but the battery level was going down.
Your second suggestion is probably right, but i'd like to exhaust my options first before having to restore and send to creator. I do find that with the stock cable and no external case on it stays plugged in well and doesn't make any "interrupted connection" noises.
With stock charger and cable and minimal functions running its charging about 1% every 4 minutes. ( Approx 6.5 hrs to full charge )
I feel like the hardware must be working in order to do that, and that the software is putting some kind of excessive strain on it. Possibly?
The battery use still shows, screen as the major contributor at 61% , so I switched from a really high resolution static background to a low res one. ( results to follow)
Downloading WanamLite now and going to try that out, also going to try performing the unlock procedure I did in reverse order and see what that does. Keep you posted. Open to suggestions.

Doubt it, but maybe you can try going from touchwiz to aosp. Very much more lightweight, though you'll lose some s4 features. If it is faulty hardware/battery I'd just save yourself the trouble and swap it for a new one; or try another battery. I guess you can try doing a compete wipe and flashing a fresh ROM with a kernel you know will definitely run smooth with it.

Already tried the second battery, no luck. Any suggestion on the rom/kernel combo?
I use task650 with kt's kernel and it's excellent. Though it's all opinion, there is many great combinations. Some ROMs come packaged with their own kernel or a custom one.

IMO: those temps are pretty normal.
Why you don't try a bone stock rom and see how it respond for a few hours, if the stock rom behaves the same, probably you will need to send it for warranty.
ever since installing arrow rom V8, my phone sometimes crash and reboot from opening certain apps or even taking a picture... but that's not the weird part, its when my phone reboots and turns on again, but with the battery at ZERO percent. This happened 3 times already, and only on arrow rom.
When i take out the battery and put it back on again, it's still at ZERO percent battery... to solve it i have to turn off the phone and plug it in the charger at the same time.
Any advice why this happens? do i need a different kernel or a new battery?
thanks
im using i9500 octa version.
My guess is a new battery. Samsung already stated that some phones have bad batteries.
Samsung has started replacement of such batteries. Go to your nearest service station and get ur battery replaced. Even mine had the same problem but now works like a charm.

Hello to all!
Since I don't have honor to post on main development page I need to post here in question!
I can't find nowhere something about battery life, I installed without problem ROM on my SIV and battery life is very poor. Yesterday I watched on YouTube MKBHD Hangout with Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside which have length of 39 minutes I think. My battery was at star 98% and at the time of ending video vas 45%. Battery can't last full day of normal usage. (it last from 07:00 to 18:00). At beginning I noticed this problem and I installed One Power Guard and its always on powersave or standby mode.
This anyone facing with this problem?
Yes mine is exactly the same. Running v4.0 and battery life is terrible now. Camera app force closes every now and then and sometimes maybe twice a week it reboots.
Plus I can't charge it switched off - everytime I plug it in it starts up.
Hi,
My battery is a little poor too, but it was because I was with my cellphone screen on almost the whole day... When it was an extreme case (when I was in 4.3 AOSP ROM and it didn't last even some hours, like you), I recalibrated it (I used to do it with my Xoom and X10 Mini Pro, it may be a placebo, but looks like it worked...
To recalibrate simply let your battery run completely out, then plug to the charger and let it charger completely while turned off (the white battery icon appears), then turn it on and let it run out again, then charge fully again. Remember that plugging and unplugging your device from the charger is bad for your battery, and remember to keep the screen brightness very low, turn off WiFi, Bluetooth and SPECIALLY 3G when you're not using.
Hope this helps,
~Lord

You need to flash v.6.0 which mostly correct FC camera app. I notec when i was runinng on ART reboots was more common.
My solution was to flash MK9 stock rom, this is the most stable and reliably by me so far.

Hi,
My battery is a little poor too, but it was because I was with my cellphone screen on almost the whole day...
Hope this helps,~Lord
