Sg4 splash screen - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Ok I'm having a lot of problem with my new samsung sg4. It came with the MDL firmware. I followed qbking direction on how to root with cf auto root. I have done the root and I installed TWRP for my recovery. I tried flashing sacs and also triforce and I get the sg4 splash screen nothing else. Though when I flash sacs of triforce inside TWRP it come up and says that supersu is not installed and I need to install it to have root but superuser is installed. The only the one to fix it is to use odin and go back to stock.MDL firmware. Any suggestions. Thanks

Sounds like you were bricked at one point, if you were stuck at the S4 boot. Play it safe. Do a full factory reset & use odin. Also, use the new stock image (MF9: http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SPH-L720 or http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/?model=SPH-L720&pcode=0#firmware). When you do, make sure it's set to PDA. Always clear cache & wipe calvik (Advanced > Wipe Dalvik) before installing a new rom

I would flash the selected rom again, flash a verizon kernel, wipe dalvik and cache, it will boot.
thanks

Dont flash a verizon kernel, it will totally brick your phone, flash a sprint kernel.

From what i know a Verizon kernel would not brick. Back on gs2 and gs3 sprint users would flash Verizon kernels.
One thing that would be funky was screen rotation was inverted.

No, I'm pretty sure they only flashed Verizon PRL's so they could force roam. I've never seen any talk of flashing Verizon kernels in gs2 forum.

Sorry to say but unless you can get into Recovery, then I agree with this.
I've had to do the same thing when I installed icons or something that did not agree with my system framework.
If you can get into recovery, then try clearing cache & dalvik and fix permissions.
If that doesn't work, then do a factory reset. You'll lose a bunch of stuff but it'll be better than Odin.
I think odin would be the best option it will give you a clean slate. Its not hard to reroot the device. But do as you please.

[Q] doing something wrong?

Ok I clearly must be doing something wrong when it comes to flashing ROMs as the only I used to be able to install them was through Odin on my old gs2 and so far have been unable to install one via recovery on my new s4.
I follow the instructions exactly but yet find my self either bootloop(rarely) or most of the time stuck at the screen with white text of "Samsung Galaxys4 gt-i9505" on screen.
I have waited up to 30 mins on this screen as I have read first boot can take some time but 30mins should be enough?
Eventually I have to flash stock via odin to have my phone back working.
Loosely step by step this has been my process.
1)flash a recovery with odin(whichever recovery rom author recommends)
2)boot into recovery
3)full wipe
4)install zip from ext card
5)select rom
6)wait till installed it then asked me to install root, have tried both install and not install root
7)phone reboots, stuck on Samsung Galaxys4 gt-i9505 screen.
This is the same with omega, foxhound and wanamlite, clearly I am missing something here for it not to install correctly.
If it matters I am on t-mobile UK.
I have tried rooting the stock rom first before installing anything still no difference.
Thanks for reading
sometimes mine gets stuck on that screen as well after flashing something... i just hold the power button to restart the phone and then generally it boots up fine...
also I'm assuming you have an i9505?
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Yes i9505, I have tried long holding power button but just goes back to that screen. Just finding it quite frustrating now it must be something simple I'm missing.

just tried for omega and foxhound and no difference just going to try the last one now.
just download a pre-rooted stock, flash via odin, then flash a recovery via odin, wipe everything, format /system and then install a custon first boot takes around 3 minutes...
Have now managed to get wanamlite up and running using the wipe cache & dalvik after installing rom, I am still none the wiser as to why the other two wouldn't install.

My friend has the exact same issue on his i9505 using twrp, he tried to flash various ROMs but not getting past boot screen, fortunately his back up worked but still no luck in getting a ROM to flash...very odd
Edit: he is running a 3 network supplied phone if that make any difference

I have exactly the same!
Formatted, factory reset, wipe cache/dalvik, stock firmware using Odin, Nothing is working so far..
$%^$%
Now trying to instal FoxHound 0.5.
Well still having problems lol no idea why but I can only install two ROMS but I am happy with the one I'm currently using but your always curious to see what the others are like.
If you guys are using twrp as your recovery and you format internal sd this will happen. It is a know issue with that recovery. It messes with the partition and you need to flash a different recovery. You may need to Odin back to stock to get the partition right and go from there. Hope this helps.

Im currentl;y using philz_touch recovery, I have been having to go back to odin and flash stock rom just to get the phone running again after trying these roms. I havent tried any roms from the original android development forum so might see if I get any joy with them, I know it must be something silly I'm missing
It happens if the base ROM you are currently on isn't the same or similar to the ROM you're trying to flash. Maybe changelog of the ROM you're trying to flash is a lot higher tan your current ROM and things get mixed up. I have always had success by performing a factory reset after flashing the ROM.
I had the exact same problem going from MDE firmware to Omega V7. After flashing Omega again I did a factory reset and it was sweet

TWRP restore

I restored my phone using TWRP. Everything works ok except if I try to restart the phone it hangs at the Samsung logo. Please someone help me to get my phone back working :crying:
I'm asking you restored a stock backup. Did you wipe before restoring? Have you wiped since?
Yes and yes. My phone works perfect but won't boot up if I restart it. Then I need to wipe, format, restore just to boot up again. Has happened three times in a row so now I cannot restart or turn off my phone without taking 15 minutes to restore again

Sheez, how can someone help if you do not tell us what type of att device you have, I suppose you have a att, or you would not be posting here...we are not Houdini's here...help us help you.
You have a kernel issue with your backup, I bet. get the correct kernel for YOUR device, restore backup, AND BEFORE YOU BOOT, flash the kernel.

I'm sorry that I neglected to mention which device in particular. I am using a ROGERS SGH-I337m Galaxy S4. It is currently running TW stock (rooted with motochopper). If I understand you correctly, I should turn my phone off, and then boot into recovery, and then flash the stock rogers kernel, (wipe cache, dalvik, fix permissions) and then it should boot? I should note that the last time I tried wiping Dalvik before booting the system, the dalvik wipe failed.....
P.S. I couldnt get wifi working on Omega v7 so I tried google edition 1.3 but found it too vanilla. I really want omega v7

I'd be more worried of getting my phone working not what rom you want to flash.

Right now I am trying to find out if flashing the stock kernel will enable me to reboot normally? I will copy the kernel to the card just in case my phone powers off. Then I will try flashing it to see if phone will boot. If not then I will restore from nandroid yet again and be unable to reboot.
I will use Odin as a last resort.
Ps. This would be a lot easier if install instructions were carrier specific.

flash omega
before you boot, flash YOUR CARRIER kernel.
thats it...easy easy easy.
course this after you get the correct kernel flashed so you can even boot.
answer is...
get into recovery, flash YOUR CARRIER kernel, you should boot up with no problem

I got my phone booting properly again. I re-rooted. I installed TMO KTweaker. I can still reboot. I took another nandroid. I will try flashing omega + ktweaker again this time without formating via TWRP which apparently casused my problem.
Usually when you have restore problems, its either a MD5 mismatch, or corrupt micro SD card. You don't have to wipe when restoring, TWRP does it automatically when you restore.
I got Omega v7 working with the TMO KTweaker on my rogers i337m. Thank you all!
everything works perfect now thanks!!
good deal

Does anyone have a flashable .zip of the 9.8.1Q-78-1 kernel?

I flashed argghhh's kernel and am having bluetooth stutters (with apt-x headphones). I am not sure it's because of the kernel though and want to test a bit.
Does anyone know how to restore the previous kernel without re-flashing the stock rom?

Just dirty flash the stock ROM, without wiping anything. Well, you could wipe cache/dalvik just to be safe. If you don't wipe data, dirty flashing the ROM shouldn't affect anything.

As sloosecannon made clear a simple solo restore of the boot partition / img is replacing the kernel.
9.8.1Q-78-1 Stock Kernel
Thanks everyone!
And thanks Attack!
Update: Oh wow, that was it. No skips at all now. 2/3 of my audio programs would skip before when starting a song (again, only when using an Apt-X compatible bluetooth headset). Or they'd skip when opening a menu while playing a song, or turning off the screen. Skips would continue for 5-10 seconds and then it would even out.
Not even once on the stock kernel. I guess I'll report this to arrghh

Hmm, I tried this and it installed and all, but my wifi is broken. I wonder if it is because I was on a deodexed stock rom. Will try a dirty flash of the whole thing now.

Yeah, no idea. A dirty flash got it all back and working.
If I pressed the wifi toggle it would just turn back to off. After a few times I got the 10 fast vibrates and still nothing. Wiped caches a few time, still no.
But I'm back up and running
I was having an issues with my WiFi when using arggghhss.
Flashed the stock kernel from this thread and now I have the same problem with my WiFi not turning on. A dirty flashed fixed this? What's a dirty flash and where can I find a stock ROM?

Dirty flashing is just flashing without wiping anything. Just dirty flash whatever ROM you're using and it will reload the original kernel that came with that ROM. You can wipe cache/dalvik to be safe, but don't worry about wiping data when you're dirty flashing.

it should still work via CWM - but I think most folks are using TWRP.
what are your steps in the process?
mine would be:
copy zip file to the root folder of the sdcard (mnt/external1)
reboot recovery
mount system
wipe cache
wipe dalvik
wipe data/factory reset
wipe system
reboot recovery (not sure if this in an option in CWM, if not, then just make sure that system is still mounted)
mount system
install ROM
reboot

Well I got it flashed. I was doing a dirty flash so I didn't wipe data or system. But I guess I didn't realize that you had to Mount system. I assumed that the recovery did that automatically.
After mounting system the stock rom flashed just fine and my WiFi is golden. Thanks to everyone who helped.

yeah, I think what happened was that you were installing a ROM with an incompatible kernel (existing one) or vice versa... in either case, glad you got it working. i almost always mount when tinkering....

Where can I get touchwiz stock 4.4?

My friend wants to get rid of root and all that and just get the stock gs4 rom so he can get OTA updates and stuff. I cannot seem to find 4.4 of the touchwiz rom anywhere.
Anyone know where I can find it?
Thanks!
Grab this and flash using Odin. Its a tar file. Be sure to backup anything important as it wont wipe data but there are times where after successfully flashing and rebooting it will hang on the sprint yellow splash screen which will require a factory reset on stock recovery which means it will wipe the entire internal memory.
