[Q] doing something wrong? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok I clearly must be doing something wrong when it comes to flashing ROMs as the only I used to be able to install them was through Odin on my old gs2 and so far have been unable to install one via recovery on my new s4.
I follow the instructions exactly but yet find my self either bootloop(rarely) or most of the time stuck at the screen with white text of "Samsung Galaxys4 gt-i9505" on screen.
I have waited up to 30 mins on this screen as I have read first boot can take some time but 30mins should be enough?
Eventually I have to flash stock via odin to have my phone back working.
Loosely step by step this has been my process.
1)flash a recovery with odin(whichever recovery rom author recommends)
2)boot into recovery
3)full wipe
4)install zip from ext card
5)select rom
6)wait till installed it then asked me to install root, have tried both install and not install root
7)phone reboots, stuck on Samsung Galaxys4 gt-i9505 screen.
This is the same with omega, foxhound and wanamlite, clearly I am missing something here for it not to install correctly.
If it matters I am on t-mobile UK.
I have tried rooting the stock rom first before installing anything still no difference.
Thanks for reading

sometimes mine gets stuck on that screen as well after flashing something... i just hold the power button to restart the phone and then generally it boots up fine...
also I'm assuming you have an i9505?
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

Yes i9505, I have tried long holding power button but just goes back to that screen. Just finding it quite frustrating now it must be something simple I'm missing.

just tried for omega and foxhound and no difference just going to try the last one now.

just download a pre-rooted stock, flash via odin, then flash a recovery via odin, wipe everything, format /system and then install a custon first boot takes around 3 minutes...

Have now managed to get wanamlite up and running using the wipe cache & dalvik after installing rom, I am still none the wiser as to why the other two wouldn't install.

It should work my friend give it a try again and which recovery are you using? Name

Maybe your base rom wasen't the same as the rom you tried to flash?

My friend has the exact same issue on his i9505 using twrp, he tried to flash various ROMs but not getting past boot screen, fortunately his back up worked but still no luck in getting a ROM to flash...very odd
Edit: he is running a 3 network supplied phone if that make any difference

I have exactly the same!
Formatted, factory reset, wipe cache/dalvik, stock firmware using Odin, Nothing is working so far..
$%^$%
Now trying to instal FoxHound 0.5.

Well still having problems lol no idea why but I can only install two ROMS but I am happy with the one I'm currently using but your always curious to see what the others are like.

If you guys are using twrp as your recovery and you format internal sd this will happen. It is a know issue with that recovery. It messes with the partition and you need to flash a different recovery. You may need to Odin back to stock to get the partition right and go from there. Hope this helps.

Im currentl;y using philz_touch recovery, I have been having to go back to odin and flash stock rom just to get the phone running again after trying these roms. I havent tried any roms from the original android development forum so might see if I get any joy with them, I know it must be something silly I'm missing

It happens if the base ROM you are currently on isn't the same or similar to the ROM you're trying to flash. Maybe changelog of the ROM you're trying to flash is a lot higher tan your current ROM and things get mixed up. I have always had success by performing a factory reset after flashing the ROM.
I had the exact same problem going from MDE firmware to Omega V7. After flashing Omega again I did a factory reset and it was sweet

Samsung Note very messed up. Need tech support!

My note is in a stage where it will just show the opening screen and sometimes loop the opening Samsung logo.
I can still boot into recovery mode, but nothing seems to fix my phone.
I tried wiping everything, and may have wiped to much.
Can someone help me get my phone to factory settings over skype sometime?
I am very lost
I think you need to flash a stockrom via PC odin to get it back to normal.
As long as you can boot into download mode, it can be fixed, as mentioned above, pc odin and flash stock rom.

I tell you one way. What i did. I rooted stock rom. Made settings of my desire and took back up of it. Copied that back up into my pc. And then started experiments with ma phn. I came one or two time in the same situations what i did. I just restored the back up i made n it was again ready to do experiments.
Suggestions (to save urself to stuck in this situations ):
1. When you go in recovery to flash new rom, first do wipe data then wipe cache then do wipe dalvik cache.
2. Check on developers thread of the specific rom that weather the rom has special requirement to flash. Like some ics roms need to flash on the chinese version of rom. First you flash chinese ics rom then u flash deaired rom. N some need specific kernel support like stunner rom used to need abyss kernel before flashing the rom. So check installation instructions carefully.
Best of luck.

Word of Caution ! Do Not Do a Full Wipe In CWM On NEW GERMANY ICS

Ok so i flashed ICS onto my galaxy note with CMW. I then boot into CMW recovery and i pressed wipe data to factory reset. The phone got stuck on wiping data and i pressed the power button. This caused it to restart but it got stuck on samsung logo. I thought ok i will just flash GB rom using PC odin but this did not work. I will send it back to samsung tomorrow for repair, hopefully they repair it. My binary count is 'no', can they tell if i have CMW on it?
ANYWAY YOU ARE WARNED!!! DO NOT WIPE ON THE OFFICIAL ICS ROM.
If you are getting to the samsung logo, have you tried starting in download mode or recovery mode and then re-flashing the rom?

I believe the problem is a little more complex than just wiping with CWM. And I believe OP should describe a little bit more of history before I got to that point.
I have personally just wiped data/factory reset with CF-CWM with NO problem at all.
I went from stock GB KK2 to stock ICS LPY using CF-CWM . Did not wipe anything before the update. Everything went smooth. Today I decided to wipe in order : Dalvik - Cache - and finally data/factory reset , all from the CWM recovery screen, that I started from the CWM Manager. Rebooted my SGN and everything was fine.

As quoted many times, some people can wipe 1000 times until brick or even forever and it may never happen, even on leaked kernel, if you wiped 500 times still dont mean it is safe for everyone.
I can only speak from my experience, but I also have had no problems with LPY ICS.
I came from CM9, but I decided to flash stock GB with PC odin before flashing LPY.
Rooted GB with the zergrush exploit, then flashed LPY with CF_root kernel using mobile odin pro.
Made a backup of LPY and a factory reset wipe in CWM. No problems at all.
No idea if I just got lucky or not. Bit nervous about using it, thinking to go back to CM9, to be safe.

Stock recovery does not work fine - we have at least one incident of someone experiencing eMMC damage after a wipe with stock recovery
As stated EVERYWHERE - Just because some people are able to wipe successfully doesn't mean everyone is safe. The chance of bricking is maybe 5-10%, but:
On safe kernels it's 0%
Those who have wiped before are not guaranteed to continue being OK - over in the Epic 4G Touch forums, some users experienced problems after safely wiping 10-20 times or more. Some people's devices died on the first wipe, other's continue to be fine

Interesting... actually in the 1st place y did u press the power button during wipe? This mayb the reason rather than Germany ICS for ur case...
If the phone got stuck, the phone wont respond even if u press the power button.. i suspect its doing wiping in the background... need to b a little patient.
I once had wipe data for abt 15 - 20 mins but i juz let it do the job till it said its completed...

I absolutely do not understand this at all. But, I guess no one does.
There's GOT to be some variables that are similar with everyone that has the bricks happening. I have not bricked and I have been on about 4 or 5 leaked ROMs (and kernels). But, I decided not to take any more chances and I am on official ICS rom now, however, I did not flash CF Root kernel with the Open Germany ICS Rom. I got root by flashing CWM.zip and Busybox (per Dr.Ketan's post).

Not stupid.
Same thing has happened to lot of people including me.
I didnt ever touch CM9. Went from GB safe kernel straight to LPY. And did data/factory reset from CWM and bam... Phone is bricked.
DId not touch Nandroid, Did not restore, did nothing other than wipe.
I can get into download mode and CWM recovery. Even managed to flash the redpill recovery and GB rom via CWM but phone wont boot. ODIN cannot flash and gets stuck at NAND flashing step.
Its not stupid warning. Its a valid warning.

I didn't even do that. I got root using Mobile Odin Pro and injecting SuperSU from the CheckRom/Abyss 6.2 GB ROM. I cannot imagine anywhere else I may have got root. I did not use CF Root during or after the flash of LPY. I have stock recovery with fully rooted Stock LPY.
Now My question is how to flash a ZIP file of a Custom ROM without using CWR... Unless they release them in Tars as well as Zips. In which case the ROM is likely to have the CWR in the kernel anyway.

Stay stock and rooted. Study what these custom roms have modified and do it yourself. Most of the time, it's eye-candy flavor that they add for those who want it the easy way. They should be aptly called "customizer" instead of "devs".
Then again, that's just me

Issues with running any custom ROM

Hello guys,
I wonder if somebody can help me. I bought a new Nexus 7 few days ago. As usual like with any other new device, I unlocked and rooted the device with the nexus root toolkit. After that I flashed via recovery a custom ROM. Everything worked fine, but after few hours, I wanted to try another rom, so I rebooted into recovery and the mistake I made was, that i wiped the inernal storage instead of cache. I was not able to get the custom ROM to the internal storage and the ROM was deleted, so the only option to bring the tablet to work was flashing original ROM via the toolkit or fastboot. Now I'm running on the original ROM, because when I try to flash any custom ROM, the insallation finishes fine, the tablet restarts and it gets stuck on the bootanimation.
I already tried 3 different ROMs, but the problem still persists and I have always to flash back the original ROM to get the tablet working.
Does anybody know, how to solve this problem? I really want to have a custom ROM running.
I appriciate your help!
Thanks for any ideas!

Re download the rom of your choice to the tablet. Goo manager is my preferred method Keeps from adb push to the device...
Then Boot into recovery.. TWRP is what i use..
Wipe dalvik cache and system...
you can also in twrp .. copy your rom to usb/sd media boot into twrp with a connected usb media.. do full wipe and flash the rom from usb storage.. Great for those who have issues with internal storage. This way you can wipe it as well...
Good Luck....
Hello Erica, of course iI didit this way. As I wrote, I tried 3 different ROMs and the problem is always the same. I stucks on bootanimation.
First time I flashed custom ROM without any problems, but after flashing original ROM via the root toolkit, I am not able to get any custom ROM running.

Can't get passed boot logo..

This isn't my very first time with flashing/rooting/etc. but I'm not that adept with it.
Got my S4 2 days ago but managed to get time today to work on it. I rooted successfully and everything was running perfect. I flashed over the newest Beanstalk ROM w/ gapps and it ran fine the first time it ran.
I can't get passed the Samsung Galaxy S4 boot logo every time I try to reboot the phone though...
If I wipe the cache/dalvik and reflash it still doesn't boot passed logo.
If I wipe the cache/dalvik and then wipe data (including the internal SD card, completely wiping it clean), flashing the ROM will work the first time it runs; once I reboot or just power it off then power it back on, stuck at Galaxy S4 logo... I let the ROM run first time through, input only what is needed to get to the home screen (google account/wifi setup/phone name/etc.), then I've tried rebooting it, shutting it down and powering it back up, letting everything update and waiting half an hour and restarting it... all have the same result, stuck at boot logo
I'm using TWRP, I have a recovery for stock but I don't want to use stock.
If anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it.

This is EXACTLY what I was about to try... I'm literally reflashing the ROM fresh right now, going to put the kernel on the SD card, then reboot into recovery and wiping cache then flashing the kernel.
Will using a recovery that was made on a different kernel have any effect if I decide to use the recovery? I've heard bad things about flashing the wrong kernel (even though I know the one I'm about to use is the correct one) and really screwing stuff up if not done properly. I just want to make sure I don't screw anything up permanently.
Thanks.

Since there are no recovery categories according to this page,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2303917
I don't see where it would matter. No guarantees though.
I do know it is ESSENTIAL to match the type (TW or AOSP) ROM and kernel to avoid major problems.
I also recommend TWRP 2.5.0.2

I did a fresh install of the LiquidSmooth ROM and it's not hanging at boot logo whenever I reboot, and everything is working well. I suppose I'll stick with this for a while.
For my steps trying Beanstalk:
Boot into recovery (TWRP 2.6.0.0)
Factory reset;wipe cache/dalvik
Format Data
Factory reset;wipe cache/dalvik
Install ROM + Gapps
Wipe cache/dalvik
Reboot
I then tried doing that exact process, after letting it boot once I rebooted into recovery and flashed KT Kernel and wiped then rebooted and it hung at boot logo.
I did it again but I installed ROM + Gapps + Kernel then wiped then rebooted and it still hung at boot logo.
I'll download and prepare a new install of Beanstalk and give it another try tomorrow. I'll make sure to backup Liquid in case I want to switch back.
Thanks again for the help!
Glad it's working out for you.
If I may ask here; how do I know if a certain kernel is compatible with a ROM? I know to match the version (4.2, 4.3. etc,) and base (AOSP/ TW) but is there anything else specific that I need to watch out for that could cause problems with flashing a kernel on a ROM?

Not really unless the rom dev for some reason doesn't recommend using a certain one. Kernels will act differently for everyone even on the same device with the same rom. Just need to flash them and find out which one works the best for you (battery life, overheating, smoothness, etc).
Always have a backup handy just in case something doesn't work right.

urgent! stuck on splash!

hey all,
so i am incredibly new to this scene and just recieved my s4. i was preparing to flash a ROM onto my phone, and got it rooted and installed CWM.
I forgot to download the actual ROM zip file, and went into CWM via goo manager, wiped factory/data and cache. It was only AFTER i wiped everything that i realised i didnt download the ROM zip file, so i rebooted the phone and now it is stuck on the start-up splash screen where it displays "Samsung galaxy S4 GT-I9505" and will not continue :crying:
I was running on stock, and had only rooted the phone.
PLEASE i urgently need to fix this ASAP. Help!
Hi,
is there a Odin Version of the Rom you tried to flash? If yes, you could simply bring your device to download-mode and flash the Rom with Odin.
Alternatively search for a odin flashable Recovery and flash this first. Then you could boot to recovery and flash the zip of the Rom.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app
i tried installing the liquid smooth rom, and from what i can see there is no odin version of the rom :\
Are you able to direct me to an Odin flashable recovery I can use?
im really stressing out about this
i'm in the process of downloading a stock firmware and will try to flash it on, but it's taking forever to download
I don't see why you can't boot again if you have only wiped the user data and cache, just press the home button for 10 seconds and see if it restarts with your reset stock firmware. Otherwise you can reboot into recovery and do the wipes again (not the option to install a new ROM), or put the ROM zip you want to flash on an SD card and then flash from the SD.
I hope this helps.

You should of made a backup with CWM. That's what it's used for also, besides flashing .zips. Always make a backup that you can restore and keep an extra copy on ur computer and/or a usb drive.
You have to use Odin to flash a stock firmware from Sammobile website. Make sure you download the correct firmware for your phone.
Dont worry, your phone isn't brick.
when i first did the wipe, i chose the option that i was going to install a new ROM. I'm now assuming that's where i made a mistake.
I did make a backup before i wiped everything onto my SD card, but now i can't even access that backup because it's saying there's nothing.
I've tried flashing a ROM onto it, but it says aborted.
Yes SORF ist right. It should boot into resetted stock firmware.
First try to copy the Rom to SD and then boot to recovery an try flashing it.
If booting to recovery doesn't work (but it should work if you just wiped user data and cache) you should try flashing new recovery with odin.
You could use Philz recovery for GT-I9505 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2281367
Installation Instructions for installation with odin you find here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39433857&postcount=4

Have you tried to boot into recovery again and then flash your already downloaded rom from sd? So you don't have to download a complete sammy rom.

yes i have tried that, and it says that install aborts.
Also when i re-wipe everything and then try to reboot, it says my device is missing root.
When i try to re-root, and the device reboots, it gets stuck on the intro screen again so the root doesn't actually complete installing
have you fixed it yet?
so im going to try a different ROM other than the liquid smoothe one i wanted (since it keeps saying aborted)
question: does it matter if i use ANY s4 ROM regardless of carrier? I'm from Australia and there is no specific carrier for my phone on xda
Why does it fails to install? Are there any more error messages?
Also you can try the point "Fix Permissions" under Advanced Options. This could help.

try something lite like miui - it will save you time on download and is a good solid base to work from. dont flash the lite gapps without a reboot.
for a solid Sami based rom then i suggest using GoldenEye.

ok so i went ahead and found the cyanogenmod one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317040
and installed this and it works
though i dont like the look of this ROM lol, i prefer something a little more stock looking.
Any recommendations?
When reflashing a new ROM, what is the process i need to follow?
Cyanogenmod is themeable. So you could search for a stock like theme and install that.
If you like an overall more stock rom try scottyf79's recommendation.
If you want to flash a complete new Rom first copy zip onto sd, then boot into recovery, wipe data and cache, then falsh zip file.
Try the Omega Roms. They are close to stock.
Closest to stock are the prerooted DJembey ROMs (the CWM ones) or the Wanam Lite ROM (it's what I am on now)

personally -
i use Philz recovery
before install of a new rom - i use the "new rom" wipe option rather than the normal data, cache and dalvik wipe (it does this but adds in some extra steps)
then flash the rom of choice
if you get any other messages before reboot - select no
like i said before, if you want a stock looking Sami rom then try Golden Eye.
