Asked: a Howto for rooting a S4 i9505 on a Mac. - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi There,
After using the search tool on XDA, i've come across two solutions to root my S4 (International version, i9505) on a Mac (OS X). One of them is motochopper. I've installed it, and followed all the instructions. But at the end, i keep getting this line in Terminal where it says "failure" instead of success. When I open Superuser on my device, it keeps saying that i should update. This is also not working.
The other solution was Heimdall. I got the instruction from the site of CyanogenMod. Heimdall keeps crashing here. I removed Kies from my computer and it still doesn't work. I've got no /opt/local/lib on my machine, not even in the hidden files part.
So does anybody know another solution to root my i9505 on a Mac?

Nobody out there with a solution?

Thnx dude, but it's like you didn't even read the OP. Heimdall keeps crashing on my mac, so giving me a download-link to Heimdall aint really a solution.
The second link you gave me: i'm using a mac, as I stated clearly in the OP. Odin is a windows tool.

[Q] Failed root with odin, cannot detect with Kies 3

I recently got a Galaxy Note 3 from Verizon. I wanted to root the device, it was really easy with my old original galaxy so I looked at a few guides which were all using "Root de la Vega" and finally tonight in an attempt to root my device I used the guide at:
phonearena.com/news/How-to-Root-the-Verizon-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-3_id48247
I put the phone into download mode and connected it to Odin with the included Samsung USB 3.0 cable. I selected the root de la vega firmware using the AP button and hit Start to begin flashing. Almost immediately after the write starts it fails and on the phone it says:
"Secure check failed: cache"
Click to collapse
In the guide it mentions there may be problems using the USB 3.0 cable so I tried it with a USB 2.0 cable with the same results. I tried rebooting the phone to see if it had wiped it. Indeed, it had been wiped and is now going to the screen which says there was a problem updating the firmware and says to use the Software Recovery Assistant to restore the firmware.
I am not sure why this has happened. I feel like I followed the instructions to the letter. After looking at some different guides I am noticing that many have you put the phone into USB debugging mode which the guide I was following doesn't mention. Is this why it has failed. Is this strictly required?
I would like to get this device rooted, but now my number one priority is getting it back into a state where it will be more useful than the paperweight on my desk. I tried downloading Kies 3 which I read can restore the stock firmware on the phone. I was extremely annoyed when I realized that Kies 3 would not recognize my phone at all. It says that the device is not supported by Kies 3 and gives me a link to check support (which just brings me to the Kies download page which clearly states that my phone (Note 3) is supported. I even tried to download the original Kies software which will not even recognize the device enough to tell me it's not supported.
Can anyone point me to a way to restore my phone to factory settings? Can I download the stock firmware and flash it with Odin, will this work if I couldn't get the custom firmware to flash in Odin (possibly because of not setting USB debugging?).
EDIT: Note that, following the guide, I did not check which build number my phone is before running Odin, now I have no idea which it is and what stock firmware to download. Is there anyway to figure out which build my phone was on or which stock firmware I need to download?
EDIT: So it looks like my problem is similar to this problem posted on XDA. I followed the link in that thread to this guide to restore the stock firmware. However, it has three different downloads for different builds, I am not sure which I should download or if there is a way to figure it out. Will any of them work? Can I try them one at a time safely until one of them works. I don't want to mess things up any worse than I already have.. I downloaded the MI9 firmware from that page, but this is just a guess... Anyone have any idea?
Any help will be very much appreciated.

Click the link in my sig and d/l the MJE tar, flash it in ODIN (instructions also provided)
Then, you can follow the root, safestrap and cust rom links...
All links, step by steps, everything you need to get you up and running are in the link in my sig
Start fresh with the OEM MJE tar, then go from there... Hit me up in that thread for additional help!

Thank you very much! I wish I would have found your guide first. I flashed the MJE firmware, was able to successfully root using Kingo (after a few attempts). I also installed safestrap and the open source superuser app.
Now I just have to figure out what roms I want, looks like I can take advantage of the multiple rom slots and try a few before installing one into the stock rom slot.
Again, many thanks!
Odin to MJE Question
Hi, my phone is fully stock with MJE on it. To root my phone, would I need to install the MJE tar file and also use King or just the MJE file? So far, I have had no luck using Kingo to root my phone.
Thanks

Just Kingo should do it for you. I did this last week stock on mje. Make sure you have usb debugging enabled or it won't work. I also used Kingo 1.1.6 instead of 1.1.7 and I had no problem at all woth knox or anything. It worked like a charm.

I used 1.1.6 because I wasn't sure if their new version was going to automatically add a custom recovery and trip Knox. I was reading the comments on their facebook page (Kingoapp) and saw one that said it will trip knox but a few days later read that it was a option to install a custom recovery. Instead of taking a chance I downloaded the older one and used that. Also in the 1.1.7 comments there is a link to official Samsung drivers if you want to be sure to have the latest ones. There are links for all their versions on the fb page if anyone wants to try that route.
Rooting w/Kingo
Finally was able to get root! What I did was uninstall the Samsung drivers and re-install them. Thank goodness it's finished. I also just installed HyperDrive and Beans. It's kinda nice having a choice each time I turn the phone on.
Thanks for your help.

I watched this guy for a while when i was getting into rooting and roms. He explains things pretty good. Hope this helps...Sorry i couldn't help more with Heimdall. [Q] unauthorized software

I stupidly tried to flash a custom recovery without unlocking the boot loader (2nd time rooting a phone) and of course now I get the message that there is software not authorized by Verizon, yada yada yada.....I can't use the phone. As I already said, I'm not very smart w/ this I guess. I rooted my phone with the new towelroot method and it worked flawlessly....but then I tried to go further and figured I'd just do everything necessary to run custom roms. Anyways, I've got the yellow triangle and I really really don't want to go to Verizon and try to talk my way into a replacement (I just got a replacement phone about 2 weeks ago) Is there any way to fix this? Before you reply, know I don't have a windows computer so I don't think I can use Odin, and my phone isn't showing up in Kies when I connect it after making sure my phone is in download mode. I'm at a loss.
Your only option is Odin, I would say find a friend with a windows computer... Then once you are back on track, read on this forum about safestrap before you flash anything else... Good luck!

Thanks. I know what I'm doing today now
Can anyone point me in the right direction to download the right pit file for use in Odin (Jodin3 to be specific). It's supposed to find the proper pit file automatically, but it can't for some reason. Oh, and I did do some digging....for some reason the only pit file I found (which was uploaded in Oct. of 2013) doesn't work. I can't find anything else other than that...if there is anything else.
I am trying to fix his phone for him but I am unable to find any full 4.4.2 Odin tars, are there even any available yet? The only ones I can find seem to be on websites I have never heard of haha.
Help Please
I also Rooted via Towel Method and flashed clockwork touch recovery not thinking, and i am also in the same boat. Can anyone point me in the direction of a stock TAR file to flash with ODIN, So i can get my note working again.. Any help would be great.. Thanks in advance

Samsung Galaxy J3 2016 Firmware hidden.img stuck

Hello there,
I recently tried to get Android 10 onto my old phone. But i already got stuck on trying to root it. First I could not install new firmware because of FAP lock.
Then when I tried to get around the lock, I tried to root the phone with this tutorial. But Odin failed at hidden.img. Several times. And now I am stuck with "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue Select recovery mode in Kies".
I tried flashing with deleted hidden.img - it does not work. When I add an .md5 extension, Odin says binary invalid. When I remove the ".md5", Odin just crashes.
Any ideas?
If it is somehow important: I once rooted this device, but for some update or app, idk, i went back to normal, I dont really remember. I use Windows 10.
Thanks

So you have download the samsung drivers? Unzipped the file with result of a .md5 file? connected your phone to the pc with download mode? And then putted the file on the AP section? And clicked start?
Everything i just mentioned (except the .md5) can you find on HighOnAndroid website. Try to get the odin from there.
Please reply if it worked

Well yes, I already did all you described, but did not get it from HighOnAndroid (I also tried, but the "samsung drivers" are Malware which is blocked by Windows, so...).
I know how to flash a phone. It just does not work because of some weird Error with the hidden.img. I also saw a ton of other people trying to flash their phone with this Error, but their solutions do not work. So I need someone with another solution.

Try get the samsung drivers from samsungs official website
I once again tried it with these drivers. No change.
I just want to tell you, that I am no idiot and I know how to flash a phone. It just is a very specific problem, that occurs a lot apparently: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=flash+galaxy+hidden.img+stuck
The problem is, that the solutions posted on Youtube and other places do. not. work. As I explained in my starting post.

Samsung GT-I9300, HELP, Firmware. Kies not working, recovery without data loss

Hi
I have a strange problem on My Samsung S3, GT-I9300
The phone does not boot into Android and I don't get the Samsung splash screen
I get the following message on the screen
"Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies & try again"
I have connected it to My laptop and tried with Windows 7 x86 (32 bit) and Windows 10 x64 (64 bit) but Kies just keeps on the screen on connecting and then times out.
I've tried to reinstall the drivers but nothing works
After watching some youtube videos and reading some threads people have said it might be a bootloder problem.
Before I do any flashing or any thing,
I can get into download mode and others have said to use Odin to fix this but I don't want to loose My data on My phone as I don't have a backup and cant get Windows to recognise it as a device where I can back up all the folders
I wanted to ask how to fix this and where I can get the official stock firmware for this phone
It does not have any custom firmware
sammobile have archived the firmware for this model and require me to pay a membership fee to download
I have seen there are some tools such as samfirm and Frija (some say it has a virus, but does not work)
Samfirm does not work, I keep getting errors and I have installed the MS library files but makes no difference
I have tried to download from Updato, but it takes ages to download and sometimes the files dont download correctly
Does Samfirm still work ?
If so how can i get it to work
Are there any new tools, to download firmware
Can anyone upload the firmware for the I9300 here
I need I9300, UK 02 and I9300 UK unlocked firmware
I dont know which one My has
Please can someone help me
Thanks

You could follow those instructions to get heimdall working and install twrp to get your files.
Then you can use heimdall to flash the stock firmware.
Firmware can be found here https://samfrew.com/model/GT-I9300/
