I have signed the petition
I am very disappointed with Qualcomm. Stupid greedy pillocks ! Why would you hold it back? And they did this with last of their qualcomm devices too. What are the hopes it will be released ? Any Idea anyone
I don't even have an N7, but I was intending to buy one. I don't think I will until Qualcomm takes their head out of the ass and decides to play nice. Why is it, they can be open with the N4, but not the N7? The chipset is almost exactly the same!
So yeah, I signed the petition, and I hope Qualcomm realizes their mistake.
Sorry for a stupid question ...
What would be the implication if Google does not distribute the "factory images"?
What would be the problem?
I thought, factory images is only if you want to RESTORE the device, correct?
Do we have problem with custom ROM or kernel because of this?
I already signed
Signed. Google signed away their souls to get the best piece of silicon into this device. I wish chip makers were like TI with their OMAP chips. Even if Qualcomm decides to allow the images to be posted, the community has lost JBQ.

I'm pretty sure the N4 is also in the same boat? Right? From my understanding, the Nexus One, Nexus 4, and Nexus 7 are all in the same boat. It doesn't mean we'll never get custom roms and stuff, but the devs won't have the flexibility to tweak as much as they could otherwise.
If Qualcomm wants to have a mobile chip used in an open source OS, they should play by the rules. Obviously this isn't news to Google which is why I'm wondering why even go that route. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times, who's the damn fool?

Nexus one and 4 have had their code released and is available on Google's developer site. Every Nexus device has their factory image and binaries out except the new 7.

HTC released the factory image for the Nexus One not Google.
Nexus 4 factory image was delayed due to legal issues with Qualcomm.

Good to see this but its a waste of time
Eventually it will come out
Nexus 4 took 2 weeks before the stock image was released
They'll eventually release the images, just like they did for the Nexus 4.
Anyone who "isn't buying the N7" because of this is being a bit foolish, because clearly as we can all see, there are custom ROM's. We are able to pull the binaries from our devices and use them to create ROM's, it just isn't as easy because AOSP themselves cannot hand them out for Dev's to compile from easily. It makes the process harder and more frustrating without a stock release image, but the community is already pushing through.
Eventually though, just like the N4, they will release the images and all will be well. This is just a bunch of crap started by some lawyers at Qualcomm.

Does anyone thing this is the route that Google will takes? I mean, people complain about the build quality of the Nexus S being all plastic but, I mean it makes sense. Maybe google was like "We dont want to make a Nexus Two, lets make a Nexus with a different theme, different company" hence why the picked Samsung. Or maybe they just wanted something that would be cheap to mass produce and easy to sell. It would be cool to see a Nexus X a year from now, using the same build material as the Droid X, you know, that soft rubber paint stuff they use on their phones along with some physical buttons, I'm just saying, maybe Google is pimping out their Nexus to whoever can cough up enough dough.. just sayin' lol.
I would hope the nexus line is reserved for the best there is to offer on the market. When the n1 came out it had top tier stuff like the 1ghz snapdragon processor in it. Fast forward to the ns and you have the hummingbird processor and the samoled screen. Personally it doesn't get better than that at this point. The way I see it is I don't care who makes the phone as long as it has the top notch hardware available to go along with those immediate Google updates.

I keep wondering about that, since the Nexus One update isn't so immediate, are the Nexus S updates NOT going to be immediate in the same way, when the Nexus (next) will be released? That would suck if Google did it again.

This update-delay for a Nexus (in this case the Nexus One) will just be once: at the time another Nexus is released. After then, they will get the updates at the same time (more or less). Why do I think this? The Nexus S isn't even released yet in a lot of countries, and since it is the 'first device with Gingerbread', it would be strange if the Nexus One had Gingerbread 3 months before the Nexus S in most countries. Also, I think they released Gingerbread on the Nexus S, before it was ready for other devices. I hope I can explain this to you with my bad english: If you buy a Nexus the day it comes out, you don't get the latest software; you get the software before it is even out. The updates that will be released after that, will come to your Nexus at the time it is released, not before.
I hope you understand what I'm trying to say

I do. And I think it makes perfect sense
It was pretty clear to me that using "S" (presumably for Samsung) instead of "2" meant that Google was leaving the door open for other "Nexus" phones from other companies. I was more along the lines of a Nexus "M" (Motorola), etc, but the S could be for S as in Galaxy "S", in which case your "X" and others make more sense.
The question becomes what would the next Nexus phone from Samsung be, the Nexus S2...?
I think that Nexus will just mean it's a Google sanctioned phone, that runs pure Google Android (no add-ons like Motoblur or TouchWiz or Sense), and is sold UNLOCKED. Note that I did not say they will be a "developer" phone...

I think that would piss a lot of people off especially the guys on here that switch devices once every year. I can see them releasing a "nexus tab" but not without a new nexus phone to go along with it. But who knows, I'd say nobody on here ever thought they'd go with Samsung to make the next generation nexus. It wouldn't surprise me if they released a top secret tab with dual core when honeycomb is released. Anythings possible that's for sure lol.

I dunno about "nobody", I never thought they "wouldn't" either, but frankly I didn't think about it all. When Google said "no Nexus 2" I took them at face value and figured no Nexus from any manufacturer.
If the rumors pan out, I would personally love to see a "Nexus N" from Nokia (maintaining the N moniker from the Nseries devices). Having Nokia's top notch hardware and incredible camera optics coupled with Android would perhaps be the perfect device.

Some people are just anti-Samsung and have blinders on about them. They certainly have software update issues, but in my opinion the SAMOLED screens can't be beat by any other display out there, and the rest of the hardware on the SGS series of phones, except for the plastic case, is as good as or better than anything else available.
I also was very excited at an improved i9000-like phone with Google's blessing. If only I'd remembered how much I hate T-Mobile's service in Los Angeles...I'd have probably passed on the Nexus S.

I defended Samsung for a long time, but I've had enough problems with Samsung to prefer never to buy their stuff again if I don't have to. Both me and my girlfriend are on our 3rd Nexus S's since launch and neither of us are crazy about the build materials. The cheap piano black plastic they use has been consistent with all of their phones I've used since the i8910 and what's said about delayed software updates is true across the board. It took forever to get updates for the i8910 and everyone knows about the Galaxy S updates. If it weren't for the SAMOLED and Google handling the updates, I wouldn't have bothered with the Nexus S at all.

The motorola xoom is essentially the nexus tablet. Software made by google, it's the first to be released with it (honeycomb), and it's the reference device the software has been made on. Considering history dictates the device running the newest software is an official google device, I'll be getting the xoom.

I have used cheap plastic phones before and nexus s certainly is not cheap - far from it. It feels as good as plastic can feel, I have never held a better plastic based phone. I don't understand peoples complaints with it. The only bad thing is it's a finger print magnet. But I use a case with all my phones so it's no biggy.

I totally agree, and love my HTC Nexus One.
But how long are we going to have to wait for the HTC dual core phone, and will it out-shine the Tegra cores they are using to develop Honeycomb on the Xoom?
Once the Atrix is out and people have used it for a few months, the kudos or complaints will start rolling in. Until then I don't think a fair judgement (negative or positive) can be made.
now this a nexus phone i could buy. screw the nexus s i refuse to buy a single core device in 2011.
The nexus S really was a ridiculous replacement to the N1, its the same damn phone with a new FF camera and multitouch. Screw that noise.
The day a Nexus device is released with dual cores, a FF camera, and true multitouch is the same day I will reture my N1
Id like to think by next January when the next Nexus device comes out (just guessing on the date) that it'll be something even better than a souped up Atrix. The Atrix looks good on paper, but I really want to see it in person. Wish it had Tmobile freqs. Hell, maybe by the time next Nexus comes out it will be one phone that could work on any US carrier.
The main reason I don't even consider motorola as a candidate for my new phone, is their locked down bootloader attitude. I do also love my HTC nexus one. I really like the atrix, exactly everything I want for my nexus one replacement,.except that its locked down. If motorola were to make a slightly upped UNLOCKED atrix, I'M THERE!!
Although I think I would prefer htc to make the next nexus, taking away the locked bootloader, motorola really is the next best choice

theres another article that you guys should read. I agree with the author that we don't want our gadgets to feel the same and look the same. we don't want a super-sized phone, do we? We want them tui be on the same operating system for ease of syncing and connecting to each other but we really don't want our gadgets just to be the same damn thing in different sizes. The next nexus phone made by motorola will be awesome because look what they've done to the atrix, that thing is a beast. Software wise, motorola has no control but google so no locked bootloader. I think that any manufacturer can develop a nexus phone but google just need to set high standards for its baby. And please one of the standard should be no or less plastic using. I'm sick of samsung using plastic all over its devices. conclusions: the next nexus phone can be based on honeycomb but with tweaked features and ui, any manufacturer that don't use plastic casing, there gotta be one killer feature that no other phone has . And yeah the nexus s was a shame. No sd card? Wtf?

After playing with an Atrix at CES, it is on my list for replacing my N1. I have full confidence that someone will figure out how to unlock the bootloader. Look at all the other phones that had bootloader security features that have been fixed by the many developers here.
Overall, have one that is unlocked already is ideal, but the Atrix is one phone that I can overlook a few things to have it. the phone really is a step forward.

you wouldnt want a custom rom on the atrix, because that would most likely break all the neat stuff it can do. root though, yeah.
The Atrix is on my list as well. I'm very happy indeed with my Nexus One (if I bought another phone I'd keep it just to mess around with and put custom ROM's etc on it). But the Atrix does look like a very good phone, and I'd be very happy if Moto did the next Nexus.

I've got my eye on the Atrix also.. unless anything better shows up on radar between now and May..
I don't think it will be an atrix
here's why
the atrix has a ton of custom code built into the system. So much that you can plug it into a laptop "thing" and browse using a tabbed firefox browser on a big screen.
Nexus devices are shipped with vanilla android x (being whatever the newest version is at the time.) Unless google starts supporting these laptop things in the native code, an atrix really couldn't be an option.
I do believe it will be motorola who produces the next nexus phone.
LG is new to the game, and no one else is really a contender (besides htc and samsung, they have the n1 and ns though)
Therefore, Motorola Nexus X?
Nah...no motorola nexus x. They'd be exactly like the ns : samsung nexus s. Nah we gotta find another letter or number to stand out. Motorola nexus infinity?

Haven't you heard? Google makes another operating system geared for laptops and for nettops. It's hot a huge stretch for the next Nexus phone to be able to run Honeycomb, and dual-boot to Chrome OS when plugged into the laptop dock. By definition the phone already has an "always-on" internet connection needed for Chrome OS, so we'd be getting the best of both worlds.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/natio...cash/2011/08/15/gIQAR7BgGJ_story.html?hpid=z1
Maybe after the prime... It takes at least a year to develop a new phone.
Maybe secret planning already in the works for sometime. This may not be a bad move for Android as a whole. Personally I think it is great news.
Patent portfolio windfall.
That is all.
I am actually looking forward to the implications this may have. Google will be able to have a direct say in more phones than just the Nexus series. Things like NFC will be able to become more prominent. And I hope that the unlocked bootloaders that Motorola promised and that the Nexus series sports will become an industry standard for Android phones (it slowly looks like this may already be happening).
But, I do hope that this doesn't exclude other manufacturers from participating in the Nexus program. I loved the fact that Google wasn't tied to one specific manufacturer. I really hope that will continue.

Sigh. The os on nexus phones is pure Google.
This will have zero effect on the NEXT nexus phone. The phone has been in the works since Xmas holiday season....
I would be surprised if the next phone is a not a moto device. Has nothing to do at all with them purchasing them either. Its the ti SoC that is being used that leads to that conclusion.
What does this mean for our Nexus Devices...I remember a thread by someone saying Samsung S4 Nexus edition even though released wont affect the way Nexus devices are developed in future. Many people had argued on the thread that Nexus wont die and there would still be huge demand for it. But now what I ask is...Why is google launching Nexus Edition of other devices? Has it lost its faith in the existing line up?? Even LG has backed out of making N5 (Good for us but then who is making it?) ?? Could someone be helpful enough to explain why google is doing this?

That's a shame. From what I've read and seen from him, he was a great guy. Maybe this will be a wake-up call for AOSP and Qualcomm.
Qualcomm doesn't care. The only wake up call to anyone would be to Google and Asus by everyone returning their '13 N7. Even then though, Qualcomm wouldn't feel the impact as hard or as soon. Unless future sells completely dropped off, an they no longer had to supply Asus, they would never notice it financially...
SwiftKey'ed from my White Sprint Note 2 using XDA Premium
JBQ is a huge loss for AOSP and I don't know if AOSP will even survive it.
As far as the Qualcomm situation goes, there's nothing official out there yet but you can bet that Qualcomm doesn't care and, really, neither will Asus because they're going to sell these tablets like hotcakes just like always as the average consumer doesn't care a bit about AOSP. Google may care but AOSP isn't a requirement for them so we'll see.

Wow. I thought qualcomm was bad, but what difference does it make to them if they release their drivers, especially when their competitors do it. Sad day. Hopefully they somehow do get posted.
In some ways google/other android manufacturers need to become like apple. They need to give an ultimatum to these manufactures/carriers. This also applies to bloatware. They should just say "Stop putting bloatware on our devices or we won't sell them to you". If samsung did that with the s4, it would be the carriers loss, not samsungs.
Sorry for the off topic post.
