TWRP and Philz Recovery don't work - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried TWRP and it's fine other than it doesn't flash any ROMs that I've tried.
Decided that I should try Philz Recovery ery and that booted fine the first time, tried to do a backup but gave me an error and told me to reboot. It wouldn't boot back into the recovery.
Should I flash stock firmware and try again? Or is there a problem with the phone?
Thanks

Just check the root status if that's ok Or re root
Else flash stock rom reset the device root using Cf root and flash philz recovery all should be ok

[Troubleshoot] Unable to into Recovery

Hey Guys,
I just rooted my i9505 via CF-Auto-Root and it worked like a charm. The next thing I did was to flash Philz Recovery, at first it auto reboot and it never went into recovery, so I followed the steps to re-flash it without the auto reboot and force it into recover. It loaded into Philz Recovery perfectly fine, now when I reboot, it gave me the option to disable auto flash recovery, so I selected yes.
After that I was never able to get into Recovery Mode ever again. All it does is says Recovery Booting in the top left corner and then restarts and loads into the OS. I followed the steps again to re-flash Philz with auto reboot unchecked and it still failed to get into recover. I then tried CWM and TWRP (via Odin), but all of these gave me the same problem and failed to get into recover.
I then tried SGS4 Flasher but still the same question.
Anyone here who has this problem before and know the fix or is able to recommend another method?
Was able to fix it. Had to flash the original stock Recovery back on and then re-flash a custom recovery. Not sure what happen but was able to install TWRP on without an issue, maybe something in Philz Recovery that stuffed it up.
OK! Looks like it is not working correctly. For me to get access to a custom recovery, I have to flash the stock recovery via Odin and then flash a custom recovery to get it working EVERYTIME. It will boot into Philz, CWM and TWRP only once, then you need to flash stock recovery and do the process all over again.
So it looks like the recovery gets over written each time even if you select "yes - disable flash recovery" in Philz Recovery. Anyone know of another way to disable flash recovery?

with a root explorer, go to system/recovery-from-boot.p and rename it to recovery-from-boot.p.bak

Thanks for responding samersh. To lessen the pain of constantly flashing the recovery via Odin on my PC, I bought Mobile Odin Pro. However, it looks like when I flashed using Mobile Odin Pro, it fixed my issue.
I checked \System\ and there was no recovery-from-boot.p there. So it is confirmation that this has been fixed. Thanks again for responding.

[Q] Custom Recovery Doesn't Work Anymore

Hello,
I've rooted my own note 3 and flashed Temaseks unofficial cm 12 rom. Everything works perfect so I decided to do the same thing for my father. It all went well, first I rooted his phone, then I flashed CWM and flashed cm 12 by temasek. The rom works fine but I forget to install the Gapps. So I tried to install Gapps but I got an error "Failure Status 6". I googled on that error and someone told it has to do something with CWM. I tried to flash a different version of CWM but now I can't reboot into recovery mode anymore. So I can't flash anything.
I flashed another version of CWM but this one also doesn't work. Whenever I try to boot the phone into recovery mode, the blue line shows up. Rebooting into recovery mode, but after a few secs, the phone just boots the normal way. Is there anyone that can help me to get CWM back to work? In the mean time I'll try to flash TWRP by Odin.
Thanks in advance!
So I flashed latest version of CWM: Buildversion; 6.13.0, CWM Base Version V6.0.4.7. I can reboot into recovery now but still can't install Google Apps due to failure status 6. On my own Phone I run a different version of CWM, but when I try to flash it, the phone won't boot into recovery mode anymore. It only boots into recovery when I flash this V6.0.4.7 . How can I get rid of this version and flash an older version of CWM?
You'll probably have to Odin back to stock and start over...

You mean If there is no other way to get the Google Apps on the phone, I have to go back to stock. I did make a backup with CWM on the while it was running custom firmware. Now I have 4 files on my comuter, 3.tar and 1.md5 . If I recover them, I will still have this not working CWM version on my phone right? Isn't there a easier way to delete CWM, can I flash TWRP over CWM and see if it will install these Gapps?
Yeah, you should be able to flash TWRP over it. TWRP is much better anyway, in my opinion. Once you get the recovery issue sorted, I really wouldn't't recommend trying to flash just the gapps. It would probably work, but it's also quite likely to cause some weird issues. It's always best to flash gapps immediately after flashing a ROM, without leaving recovery.
I would flash TWRP, wipe everything but your internal SD, re-flash the ROM, flash the gapps, and everything should be cherry.
Edit: here is the link to download TWRP.

I appreciate your effort, thank you. The recovery issue is solved. I flashed Chainfires Root script and that installed the stock recovery. However, when I tried to install and older CWM version I got back in the recovery reboot cycle. But once I installed the latest CWM it booted in recovery. So I flashed Chainfires Root once again and had the stock recovery back. From there on I tried to install TWRP but got the recovery boot cycle again. My phone is now running android 5.0.2 and I think that's the problem.... :S I'll try again to flash Chainfires Root script to get the stock recovery back. From there on I will try to flash the link you gave to me with Odin and hope that will fix it. Do you have any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?
Your version of TWRP works so far. It reboots into RecoveryMode. Now I'll wipe and try to install Temaseks Cm 12 followed by Gapps! Thanks so far!
Okay, it's solved. Can't thank you enough for you help. Bless you!!
No problem. Glad you got it figured out!

Untick auto reboot. Manually turn off phone after recovery flash. Then use 3 buttons to get into recovery.
If the phone prompts to install stock recovery when you're exiting the custom recovery, choose no(can't remember whether this menu still available in note 3, maybe other phone)
Another way is download cistom flashable twrp then as rosli mentioned to uncheck auto reboot when flashing twrp then once done disconnect and boot to recovery then in recovery flash the flashable twrp

Boot Loop after Trying to Install SuperSU with TWRP

So I have TMobile Edge+ with TWRP and I was trying to Root with installing SuperSU. The bad news it is goes into reboot loop. The good news is I still
can access TWRP. I have tried wiping cache and do factory reset but nothing works. Any ideas of how I can get my phone back working?
Thanks
Mike
Flash stock rom
restore your phone by flashing the latest stock rom firmware using Odin. if you want to re root, flash twrp using odin after seting up your phone, then flash MAGISK using twrp recovery. dont use SuperSu
