No linaro 4.3? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just wondering if anyone knows why we haven't seen a linaro Rom yet?
Is there a special problem that 4.3 presents?
(And for those of you wonderful souls about to write "give them time! Don't you know development takes time! Be more grateful! Etc...", in asking out of curiosity, not out of complaint )
Just interested if there is any special challenge that 4.3 presents!

linaro..
first of all, when you say linaro, are you asking about the linaro toolchain or the linaro patches? they are 2 different things. what are you asking about?

Maybe this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2350121

I tried but didn't see significant performance improvement of Linaro. Also 4.3 custom ROM's are still not stable (for me).
Anyway, wait a little bit, you will see linaro builds of nearly all ROM's on the forum.

Minimus ROM is a perfect stable way to go. PA 3.94 is also stable, although some features are not fully working.
With stable I mean not reboots nor force closes at all, or any other weird behavior.
Most of the AOSP build out there are pretty good and stables.

While I agree with corvus, not all of us have a ton of time to flash a ****load of ROMs. I love to play with my Xoom, but I also have a life (work, school, cat, girlfriend. and the last two get jealous if i play with my xoom more than them). But anyway. If you wanna choose a good ROM, read their respective forums. I can tell you the two oldest (read:most time invested) dev's here for the Xoom are Tiamat (TeamEOS) and Team Rogue. From what I've learned in my time at this forum (Ive had my Xoom since they came out), they seem to have the most experience with Xoom-specific problems. I'm presonally on Steady's CM9 Kang. It's important to note that he's now the official maintainer for the Xoom branch of CM9. TeamEOS has done great work, and it should be fun to play around with their Cornerstone builds. I haven't messed with them, so I can't speak to its efficacy.
I've also noticed that since the release of the Galaxy Nexus, the ROM scene here has seen a large growth as of late. I can't speak to the quality of these "bleed-thru" ROMs, but I'm sure they're fine. Seems kinda reverse-engineered to work on our Xooms though. I'm no expert!
TLDR: Try CM9! It should have a bunch of mods and go-fast pretties. If you don't like it, try out TeamEOS offerings. Donate to whichever you find suits your needs best.
Another 'best of'...
It all depends on what you want. If its glitz with additional functionality - team eos or cm9 kang.
I personally use Razorblades AOSP build. Its straightforward - no glitches - overclockable if you desire, and found it had no visual glitches or funky sleep issues. No glitz - but I want a ROM that provides a stockish experience with additional features that all come together well.
Bugless Beast is fantastic too. I just prefer a more stockish tablet experience.
I used CM9 the day it came out but recently switched to CNA. I vote CNA for sure, very reliable and customizable.

I'm happy as can be with EOS wingray nightlies...I'm on build #84 and it's super stable and functional. I oc to 1.6 ghz without a glitch. I've played with Cornerstone, but actually prefer plain EOS ICS and use Overskreen and Stickit for that same multitasking experience...just less buggy and demanding.
As an developer I prefer Team Rouges (unofficial) CM9 Release.
You have ADB in the developer settings and many more handy options.
Be careful on the WIFi-only (Wingray) Release. Since 15/03 The ROM crashes when you don't have a sd-card in. This is a serious problem. But the ROM is great!!!
Edit
It crashes every time when the tablet goes into standby mode AND no SD-card is in.
Eos is the bestest packing the most winz. I'm not biased or anything. Really.
I have EOS, CM9 and AOKP. I found the best is AOKP, currently running AOKP Milestone 4. If you are interested go to http://www.forum.aokp.co
Good luck.

If u truly want the best rom out there for thr xoom go with either the 1.0.0 from EOS or the EOS nightlies hands down
I know my name doesn't carry much clout in here, but having gone through EOS 1.0.0 / Unofficial CM9 / Codename Android 1.5.5 in the past month I really like the newest Codename Android.
Mostly waiting for there to be an official CM9 release. Then I'll jump ship to that.
Of course I run all my roms with Team Tiamats AOSP 3.0.5 kernel (w/ GPU OC)
My Xoom runs beautifully.
I have wifi only xoom and have used team eos with overclocked gpu. Its very stable no only had 2 crash's since i'v had it and that was the browser so would not put it down to the firmware at all all the hardware is supported fine and works well. I think eos is clean and tidy and with dev tools zips you'll have alot to play with.
i've testet all roms out there...
the best release would be eos with trebuchet from cm9,
or rouges cm9 with tiamat kernel...
I also just can from EOS 1.0 to Codename Android 1.5.5 and like it a lot. Both are great roms, but I just like the customization of Codename a little better.

Agreed... I am using TeamEOS 89 and Cornerstone 13... By far the best combination possible and very stable... They nightlies have been very impressive from the get go... Thanks TeamEOS!!!!!!
Am I missing something here? How can you be using both 89 and cornerstone 13? Its one or the other isn't it as they are both roms

After using almost all the ROMs I keep coming back to EOS. Its the only one in which I have not ran into any issues. Personally it suits my needs of speed + always updated

Love the bugless beast rom. I've tried most of the others and came back to bugless because it is so reliable. And the USB extension is working without an app. Concerning the bugless nightly downloads, all you have to do is stroll down until you see wingray downloads and click-on.

Beta Testing is Now Open to EVERYONE

If you go to my website (in signature) you can now access beta testing! I have opened it as my weebly pro account expired and it was expensive :/. So you can head over there and get v1.2 BETA for your kindle! Under members, no testers exist as everyone can be a tester and report bugs and/or issues they have. Also, I have a question: Should I include kernel 3.0 in the next release of my rom? I'm thinking of making 2 builds, 1 with 3.0 Kernel, and 1 with the current kernel. I say this because the current kernel, yes has no hardware acceleration; but kernel 3.0 has A LOT more bugs. Please post your opinion here and I will be sure to consider! Thank you for all of my donors who got me where I am. Donations are appreciated as I can pump builds for devices faster, especially as now I support FOUR devices.
Thanks again,
~ BiteBlaze via XDA Developers
I would suggest going with your two build idea since you have a great opportunity to be on the ground floor of this new kernel as it is a turning point in Kindle Fire roms. Also, hi, lol, sorry I went dark for awhile there, got crazy busy in classes and I wasn't able to do much more than post on the forums, my apologies.
The two versions idea sounds good, it'll be fun to try out
I second the 2 kernels idea.
Btw what is the change log for 1.2? I tried looking but couldn't find it. Is it significantly better than 1.1 or just marginally? I am on 1.1 and having this urge to beta test 1.2 but 1.1 has been so good so far and don't wish to leave this one
To flash or not to flash?

Changelog (beta does not have all of this yet): New features on v1.2
1. New Soft Keys (stock soft keys are now blue and reflective)
2. New Lockscreen color (has a blue glow)
3. Flashable Mods (for soft keys and other things)
4. Updated Apps
5. Integrated Google Apps (single flash rom!)
6. Better CPU app
7. Graphic Improvements
8. Bug Fixes
9. Modified build.prop
10. Few other minor things
ETA: now - 4/17
v1.2 is going to be groundbreaking in the progress of ReloadedROMâ„¢
Cheers.
yes try kernel 3.0.
if nothing else it will be fun testing.
thanks
steve
I would be happy to test your builds I ran the first two you put out They seemed fine to me although I am a little leary on kernel 3.0 as it is still pretty buggy closer but buggy nontheless. Im not knocking hashcode hes doing an awsome job with his kernel development and will probably change the kindle as we know it exspecially related to hwa issues of cm9. Anyway wouldnt mind doing a flash or two what you have done has been stable so far

Hey guys.
I've been using ics on my kindle for a few months now. And the only thing missing to improve on it is hardware acceleration.

I'm far from being an authority on this matter, as I am NEW to the Kindle Fire and flashing ROM's, but I like the idea of offering two builds with the different Kernels.
The best way to get a stable Kernel is to have as many people as possible using it IMHO, so this would be a good way since you have one of the more popular CM9 ROM's out there.
Keep up the good work!
Thank you for ur efforts Biteblaze. When do u expect the ROM based on the new kernel?
Totally appreciate the effort on this rom - definitely my fav.
Has anyone tired 1.2 with hashcode's 3.0 kernel yet?

Keep up the great work and I sent you a donation as well!

CM, Splashmod and rempuzzle

Hello,
I'm pretty new to custom ROMs, searched for a while the forum and other source and came to the conclusion that CM7/9, Splashmod and rempuzzle are by far the most popular ROMs for the HTC Wildfire. However, very rarely I found information about the advantages or reasons to choose one over the others.
Hence, could you guys using the ROMs above briefly explain what has driven your decision for that particular ROM?
Thanks!
CyanogenMod7:
Gingerbread 2.3.7
Highly customizable
Lots of themes to choose from
Pretty stable
CyanogenMod9
ICS 4.0.4
A bit less customizable
Lots of themes to choose from
Sorta stable
Rempuzzle
Froyo 2.2.1
Rock solid stability
In my tests, faster than CM7/9
HTC Sense (If you want it)
Can't really vouch for Splashmod, as I've never used it.

I've started with CM7 when I rooted my Willy, used the stable first and also nightlies, RC's etc. later. I didn't try out many ROM's as I didn't have much time to make a lot of experiments and I've been pretty much satisfied with CM7.
At the moment I'm on the LeWa port which I like much as it feels snappier and faster than CM7. Going to try the Mokee OS port when I find the time as it looks good, too.
In general I'd like to mention a few things (to give you an idea which direction to look first):
CM7 is the most stable ROM. Reasons: it's not only a port but a true ROM developed (also) for the Buzz, huge professional developer community, huge user community, short update frequency, clean structure etc.
Most ROM ports for the Buzz are based on CM7.
CM7 and ports are faster (because lighter) than sense based ROMs (although I've read reports that Rempuzzle was pretty fast, too - but I don't have any personal experience with sense based ROMs)
CM9, although already working and stable, could still be considered as experimental. ICS has been developed for devices with a GPU which our Willy doesn't have - that can't be just discussed away or worked around without any shortcomes.
Sense based ROMs (if I'm not mistaken) are all on Froyo until this point.
There's a lot more to know for sure - but perhaps it's already some basic knowledge to work with.
I'd like to mention that there are some even more basic things, like custom mtd partitions. If you want to tweak performance from the ground up (and don't plan to use a sense based ROM) you seriously should think about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1233340
I'm sure that a few others will give their impressions and suggestions, too. If you have any questions you can't find answers in the forum: this is a small but still very active community
Thanks for your replies.
As for ICS roms, am I right that the most popular ones are the unofficial CM9, AOKP Milstone 6 Port and [v4] KoolMIUI 2.6.8 Beta 1?

As far as I understand it's based on CM9, so it should receive the updates alike, yes?

It depends lot upon the developer, aokp has been well maintained by tathanhlam66(forgive me if mis spelled) but its not necessary to rebase it on every cm9 release.I guess he will rebase it once a major cm9 update is out.

CyanogenMod is always going to be the most stable custom ROM as long as you use the stable releases, simply because it's the most actively attended to and tested one. MIUI, Paranoid Android and Slim Bean come next and have their own perks, but they're just not on the same level.

not really,
other roms base on the most stable rom in existance, google android, aosp. cm must take this base and make it possible for old, incompatible devices to get their share. thats only possible by extending the living heck out of it. some of it is overlaid, some is not. errors come in naturally, that just happens when you leave the safe path of aosp, hundreds of commits going through gerrit stemming from all kinds of sources. dont get me wrong, cm is an amazing project. but it cant provide the same stability that aosp based roms provide, the same speed and level of customization.
as a developer i can tell you that the software i get from google is flawless, they support me with functioning drivers and blobs, documentation and guidelines. i can literally forget about everything else and go wild, extend and create new stuff that wasnt there before. i will never run into the myriads of problems the cm team is uncovering in their crusade of introducing android to legacy devices - and that in my opinion is their true power.
pps- i see you included MIUI as well. think again. guess which is the worlds biggest rom with millions and millions of users. miui. guess whos the only rom that has on ounce of design credibility. miui. they have done things in their freetime that rival professional products and you can be sure a matias duarte will not go to xda when he's out of ideas, he's taking note when miui drops a release instead. i think you are greatly underestimating them.

dont get me wrong, cm is an amazing project. but the reason it traditionally takes a backseat on nexus plattforms is that it cant provide the same stability that aosp based roms provide. it cant provide the same speed and it cant provide the same level of customization. on all other plattforms cm is the unrivaled king, that is true.

paranoid android, just put all the apps back in phone mode and its basically a stock rom with added speed and a few more customizations. plus i like the kernel colors and the custom app colors, very well done
xylon is also great but not personally my favorite, has many customizations and is much like aokp with its own feel
Codefire-X is also one of the most stable and speedy roms out, it and PA are probably my favorite roms right now, and i feel bad its often overlooked, its like aokp with a more stockish feel but faster and stabler at this point
theres also Carbon rom which is made by a few the awesome liquid rom developers, havent tried yet but looks good
Saber Mod looks cool too with its linaro optimizations but as with carbon i havent had time to try it out
there are also some interesting roms like PAC and Rootbox, but those dont really sound like they would appeal to you as much
also keep in mind i mostly prefer the roms in original android development because of the general cleaner feel, but many of the roms in normal android development are also good if you want a bit of a different feel or special tweaks
but whatever you choose, just dont stay on stock you wont regret going with any of these roms over stock
I'm using MMuzzy rom now for some days and is realy good. Is aosp with some optional features i miss in stock rom. I combine it with Trinity four kernel and for now no problems with that combination.
Never like CM or aokp...to much features and never work without problems.

rasbean jelly, fast and stable.

4.3, what a nightmare.

How many times has there been multiple official builds for the same Android version? The JWR build pushed ota to our phones is much more stable than the JSS Roms. However for some reason AOSP supports the JSS build which also means everyone building Roms is also using JSS as a base. Sorry but "occasional" deadlocks and freezes is something isn't stable. Cataclysm is a JWR based ROM that works really well. Just wanted to see what else is out there.
Anyone else mystified why AOSP would support some broken build of 4.3 when a stable build of the same version is available?
Anyway, sorry to rant. I'll be happy when stock and AOSP are on the same page again. Come on 4.3.1!

I have read the thread. I felt the need to rant despite that somewhat informational thread. Aside from that I ask legitimate and pertinent questions. Apparently you cant answer them. Nice bloated sig:good:
there are constantly different builds for aosp, while stock stays the same until an official ota update. aosp is constantly getting stuff added/fixed, since the very beginning, with differing build numbers. the difference being this time there is a big difference(change) in the kernel and graphics.

Hey thanks for the info. But usually stock and AOSP share the same build if I'm not mistaken. I personally can't recall a time when they didn't. Aside from that I can't grasp why AOSP would officially support a build known to be broken. The best developer in the world can't somehow fix a broken source. Also not sure what you mean by aosp being constantly updated and fixed? As a n4 user how could I reap the benefits of all these changes aside from waiting for an OTA update?

Also not sure what you mean by aosp being constantly updated and fixed? As a n4 user how could I reap the benefits of all these changes aside from waiting for an OTA update?

as soon as there is new code available, it gets dropped into aosp immediately(usually). lets say the build number is rtt234(made up), aosp can add a rtt234a, rtt234b, rtt234c.. just like it happened for 4.2.2. aosp supports the latest build, they dont go backward. just because something might not work right, i can and will get fixed. but, just so you know, aosp can get updated 10+ times before stock sees 1 update. anyways, the issue that you are talking about, the freeze in the keyboard, affects everyone a bit differently. some people havent had one freeze yet, others get it constantly and are very annoyed. it happens to me one or twice every 2-3 days, so it doesnt bother me at all.

My point is even though AOSP is updated constantly how does the user reap the benefits or update to the latest build if its not official? I'm pretty sure they can't. Pretty sure developers can only build from an official source. So AOSP updating constantly really is a nice idea however if updated builds aren't published why should I care?

JSS is a development branch. The reason why AOSP has multiple branches is because JSS has last minute fixes for The new Nexus 7. Google knew these changes broke other devices but didn't have time to fix them so they just gave other Nexus JWR. Most custom ROMs just supports JSS because it's the latest.

builds are published constantly. look at the development threads. for example, Rasbean jelly, an aosp ROM, gets built that day or the next, after a code drop. that's the beauty of running aosp builds. stock ROM users get updates only after an ota, while anyone can build from aosp whenever they feel like it.

Hey thanks for clarifying. I have been following both development threads. And the smoothest ROM I've tried is Cataclysm which is a JWR based ROM.
