Wondering something here...when i wiped my device, i went thru rom manager and did the wipe device thing to wipe all user data to clear out CM7.0.
after that i installed virtuous to try it out, and i noticed in root explorer in the system>app folder, there were CM apk's in there. does virtuous use CM stuff in their roms?
if not, why would they show up even after a full wipe?
Also, has anyone here ever had issues changing from a non sense rom to a sense and back to non sense in a matter of 2 hours?
well, if they are any of the CM specific apps like:
CMparts or CMstats or CMwallpapers (I think there are a few more, can't remember off the top of my head), then it sounds like a case of a "format" that didn't actually format. you wouldn't be the first person to deal with this problem with rom mgr and CWM recovery.. it is known to be finnicky when it comes to formatting partitions (among other things ).
thankfully, we have a tool now that will give you a true, clean format of /system /data and /cache partitions without having to manually run the commands every time (like I know some of us have been doing).
if you are the kind of guy, like myself, who likes to perform a clean wipe between roms, I'd highly recommend downloading that and using it instead of the rom manager/CWM recovery options.

Can't answer your first question, but on my old Hero, I swapped from an AOSP ROM to a Sense ROM once almost every hour for a day because I couldn't make up my mind. Nothing bad happened to it and my father is using it now with no ill effects.

yes i saw that program pop up when i was tying in the topic for this post! sounds like a great program wish it was posted a couple of days earlier lol. ill try when i get my device back.
wondering tho if these half ass wipes that CWM does caused my problems. i usually wipe when changing a type of rom, even with CM7 (nightly to RC for example). if i flash a nightly, i usually do a wipe every 2 nightlies.
Not sure what you mean by half ass wipes, lol, but I've never trusted the system wipe to do the job. I always do cache and dalvik along with it.

Yeah... as amazing as CWM recovery is, the wipe process can be a bit.... lacking sometimes. If you don't use amazinglarry's superg2wipe script, then I would at least manually wipe through recovery before switching roms - this way you can be at least get most of the artifacts and "ghosts" left over from your last rom.
Sorry for bumping this old thread, I came across it while googling.
I've always used "wipe data/factory reset" in CWM. But that only wipes your /data and /cache partition.
Now, i only recently found out "wipe /system" under "mounts" in CWM. Meaning, I had never wiped my /system partition before, while swapping between 50 roms (be it AOSP or Sense). And I never had any problems. But the best way to fully wipe your system, is to do every partition manually + dalvik and battery stats.
Hey guys!
This is my first post on the Nexus 7 forum so if this is the incorrect place to ask such a question, please tell me!
Basically, I wanted to make sure that I'm flashing my roms correctly. Specifically, I've been on a flashing binge and installed Smooth Rom, Paranoid Android and Liquid Smooth all after one another in the same sitting. My flashing process, using clockwork mod, begins by wiping all of my data and cache -> Rewiping the cache (this probably isn't needed) -> Flashing the Rom -> and lastly flashing gapps. I'd be very thankful if someone could tell me if this is a clean flash.
Also, I've noticed from other users on the boards for these roms that they're getting much higher benchmarks. For example, Smooth Rom with the Motley Kernel, one user mentioned that he got around 4800 on the quadrant benchmark which is much higher than what I've gotten even by fully overclocking. That's one of the reasons I wanted to make sure I was flashing correctly. Incidentally, I also seem to create a new set of folders on the Nexus 7 after flashing each Rom. For example, I have on my internal storage the usual set of folders (Alarm, Android, DCIM, etc...) but then I also have folders named legacy and 0. Within 0, there is a whole new set of Alarm, Android, DCIM, Downloads, etc... And within that subset of folders is another 0 folder with more of the same folders. So you get the picture. That doesn't seem right to me since eventually I'll have an outrageous amount of folders, haha.
So yeah! If anyone could tell me whether I flashed correctly and maybe why I seem to have those problems, I'd very much appreciate it!
Also, I'd like to note that coming from the HTC Vivid forums, it's a breath of fresh air to see such a dedicated and organized forum! Thank you!

if your roms are flashing, then youre flashing correctly. generally you want to wipe data only if going from one rom to a different rom. but if only updating the same rom, just flash your rom without wiping anything. no need to wipe dalvik as it gets wiped when you flash the rom.
what recovery are you using? i thonk its only cwm recovery that keeps adding a 0 folder every time, no such issue with twrp recovery.
benchmarks, its about how you set up your device, and how you actually benchmark. you should benchmark at highest cpu/highest cpu, as to not allow your device to scale. if you allow your device to scale, you dont actually know what cpu speed is being benchmarked. btw, 4800 on a quadrant is low. anyways, benchmarks shouldnt matter to you(to a developer they might matter though), what should matter is how it feels and runs for you.
I follow that same routine, but have only been successful in one flash, and after trying to go to P.A., now I can't get any to boot correctly. I have maybe 4 ROMs to try from, but all day, only the one worked. LiquidJB , I think. I really wanted PA though, cause thats whats on my phone.

did you wipe data before flashing the new rom?
Yes. I always wipe cache and dalvik, before flashing, and I flash the rom then gapps using twrp. At this point, I'm stuck at the Google screen with one, and PA says setup stopped when I load it.

Yes. Factory reset. Unfortunately, I've now wiped the sd card (internal) so I'm trying to flash AP using a zip on my laptop with Nexus Root Toolkit v.1.5.5, but now that I tried, iss that the rom I managed to boot still has an error that the setup program stopped, and the error keeps coming up, keeping me from entering debugging mode... guess i have to do a flash stock + unroot and start fresh....

Well, mean, I had downloaded something like 5 Roms. Might it be that rooting changed my boot version or something? Not sure what the boot version changes with the N7, on my phone it's pretty important.

So, is there any fix for this strange folders "legacy" ans "0"?
Hey!
Sorry for not responding sooner. University applications can be so time consuming. Thanks a lot Simms22! You've been a great help. Since then, I've cared less about benchmarks and more on the fact that the Nexus is freakishly fast with SmoothRom.
I haven't fixed the legacy problem but I'm assuming (and I could definitely be wrong with this) I could just delete the extra folders seeing as they technically don't have anything inside of them and afterwards just switch to TWRP. Shouldn't be that difficult.
Hey.
i recently used TeamWin Recovery to flash SmoothRom version 5 but now i am having problems. I wiped both cache and system (userdata etc) and then flashed it. However. now my nexus 7 wont boot past the Google splash screen. I can still get to bootloader. Please help!
Simple - restore one of your many Nandroid backups.
You do make backups, don't you? If not, can you provide a single reason why you do not?
Normally you perform a "factory reset" in TWRP's wipe menu before you flash a ROM - that's it, no other "wipes" are needed. The ROM package installer will do the wiping of /system for you, and /cache barely matters at all. (Do NOT use the "format data" wipe in TWRP unless it is an extreme emergency - that deletes everything in /data INCLUDING the psuedo- SD card area stored under /data/media).
If you don't know whether it is your device or the ROM that is giving you fits, flash a different ROM. If it is hardware, most ROMs will fail.
BTW, when folks have bootloops or hangs on a given ROM that works for everybody else, it is usually because:
- they did a "dirty flash" (did not do a "factory reset" first), OR
- they flashed a kernel that was incompatible with the chosen ROM, OR
- they flashed a zip file that was incomplete and they failed to take notice of the error messages on-screen.
good luck
Thanks for your help. Yes I did backup my stock Rom beforehand and I have been able to restore it. I did all the steps you said but it still didn't work though. I will keep trying.

I actually didn't give any steps at all, other than suggesting that you restore a backup if you have one - I only outlined the areas that cause problems, so I don't really know what you attempted.
Are you saying that you can successfully restore a backup, and everything works for that restored backup, or that you tried flashing other ROMs, and they worked, but not your ROM of choice, or are you saying that you can't get the tablet to boot correctly no matter what you do?
I think you will find that the more precisely you describe what you attempted, and what you observed when attempting those things, the more likely that people will come out of the woodwork to help you.
The very worst thing you can say is "it didn't work" without any details - when you think about it, you will realize that is only a single binary bit of information.
Sorry for confusion. I managed to restore my stock ROM. Then I tried to flash smooth ROM again, (doing everything you said) but it still got stuck on the Google splash screen

Hi, Hicksy994...
When I flash a ROM I've never used before,... I do a COMPLETE WIPE...
(With Titanium backups done beforehand).
------
Here's how
Booting into TWRP 2.4.4.0... I first perform a NANDROID backup...
I then select the WIPE option; this gaves me the WIPE MENU.
By force of habit perhaps, I then hit THE FIRST THREE BUTTONS...
wipe CACHE
wipe DALVIK CACHE
FACTORY RESET- this button covers the first two, so mayhap they are redundant... but I press them anyway.
I then hit the SYSTEM button; (wipe system) - THIS WIPES YOUR CURRENT ROM -
- but WARNING!!! if you don't have a replacement ROM.ZIP to flash, currently stored on your internal storage... or a NANDROID backup to fall back on... you will have an unbootable device (unless you fastboot flash back to stock... or adb push from your computer).
But of course, if you have already have SmoothROM-v5.0.zip, in the /download folder, this shouldn't be a problem.
----------------------
So wipe everything - BUT ABSOLUTELY DO NOT TOUCH... OR WIPE.. EXTERNAL STORAGE, INTERNAL STORAGE OR FORMAT DATA - CONSIDER THOSE BUTTONS OFF LIMITS!!!.
These last three buttons, in TWRP, seemed to have cause no end of trouble for many - they should have been hidden away in some 'Advanced Option' setting... in my opinion.
----------------------
So to summarize...
In TWRP... (in the WIPE menu).
Factory Reset
Wipe SYSTEM - (clear out your current ROM, completely).
Then go to INSTALL... and flash the SmoothROM.zip
(there's quite an extensive installation procedure involved, requesting you choice of kernel, browser, etc)
Reboot... and you should be be good to go...
-----------------------
I flashed SmoothROM a couple of hours ago, using this method: seems kind of OK - only problem is... I can't seem to stop Google Backup from downloading and re-installing every bloody app I've ever installed since last November!.
But that's another story.. which I'm sure I'll figure out.
Rgrds,
Ged.
Firstly, thank you for your help. Unfortunately I followed your exact steps, went through the ROM set up (choose kernel etc) and it said successfully installed, so I hit reboot but it wouldn't boot past the Google screen.
Could the kernel I choose have anything to do with it, I haven't tried them all yet?

I suppose it could be a kernel issue... bit of a longshot though...
Stock AOKP kernel
Motley Build 249
Trinity 4.2.2 Alpha 1
Franco R47 (recommended
M-Kernel a38
LeanKernel v1.54 (recommended)
...which one did you chose? (I choose franco..)

Again, thanks for help, I tried a few such as motley but not the one you suggested. I will try again soon with that kernel.

Have you tried flashing any other ROMs? What happens?

Well, my first venture into rom flashing hasn't been the most successful one as it's caused a really strange issue that a couple people on another thread have tried to help me solve, but I figure I had hijacked that thread long enough so this issue deserved it's own thread.
I rooted, unlocked bootloader, and installed TWRP v2.4.0.0 on Stock Android 4.1.1. Everything worked great. Until I flashed a rom. Now, I have been through wiping Cache, Dalvik Cache, Factory Reset, Flashing the rom (I've tried 4 with the same exact issue), flashing Gapps... All seems to go well and it says "success" when I flash, and I reboot into system. Run the setup of Google. Everything seems great and working fine. Here's where the problem is. When Google Play Store starts downloading for restore, and I'm on a solid wifi connection, nothing downloads. I have also tried stopping the downloads and installing apps individually. When I do that, I receive the same error message over and over for any app:
Unknown error code during application install: "-24"
I've rebooted, wiped cache, dalvik cache. Nothing installs. Same error. I did somehow, some way, get Titanium backup to install after numerous tries... when I try to restore any of that backup it just hangs on the first app. It does not restore anything. No batch apps. No single apps. No app data.
The odd thing is, the first time I flashed a rom, it seemed to load up fine. Stupidly, when I was running Titanium Backup for a restore I was not paying attention to what I was restoring. I was restoring all apps and app data... It caused an issue and a bunch of force closes, as you can probably imagine. So I rebooted into recovery and wiped and reinstalled rom and gapps. And virtually nothing has installed since. I have wiped and reinstalled AOKP, PACman, Carbon, and CM to no avail. Nothing seems to solve my issue. I'd love to at the very least be able to regularly install apps from the Play Store. At this point I'm not even concerned with restoring app data if that's too much to ask. I just want to be able to use my phone normally again as this is my "daily driver". If I have to go back to 4.1.1, that would be fine with me. I just want to get back to normal. And I'll do whatever it takes to get there. Any help at all would be appreciated.
Here is the original thread that some people have been giving me great advice on as to what to do, but none of it has fixed the issue yet unfortunately:

2 suggestions:
1) i think others have reported having issues with TWRP 2.4, so try 2.5 or 2.3.2.3
2) I think the error could be a lack of internal storage, so certainly try the "wipe internal storage" in TWRP (after making sure that your ROM/GApp files, backups (including Tibu) are saved to your external folder

Ok giving this a shot. I did notice that you had mentioned a different version of TWRP than I had. I will try the wiping internal storage before I install a different TWRP then if that doesn't work, TWRP. Gotta find the external folder. Unless you just mean anything that is on the actual SD card.

i would actually recommend installing TWRP 2.5 first.
never wipe external SD card.
if you have an app called Root Explorer, that works best.

Ok I'll try 2.5 then. And I wasn't gonna wipe the card, just was wondering if when you said external folder you were talking about the SD card. Root explorer works great.. if i could install it.
EDIT: Since I am away from my computer, I tried the multiple wipe method. Didn't change anything. So I will be changing TWRP versions later and will post an update.

You never mentioned using TWRP 2.4. DEFINITELY replace that. Also, just a thought. If you haven't already done so, try using the option to fix permissions. I'm fairly sure its an option in TWRP.

Back in business! Wow thank you all so much! What a pain it's been but without the help I'd have never guessed how to get this running as perfectly as it is now. Here's what worked for me:
Installed TWRP 2.5 (Instead of what I had, 2.4)

- I use TWRP 2.3.2.3 (SS has been uninstalled via it's own app, not Tibu or the system awhile ago) - but TWRP 2.5 works just fine for others
- after downloading the ROM and GApps (or any file that I intended to flash for that matter), I always place the file on the mnt/external1 directory. I
m not sure if this will make a difference, but I recall it being an issue back on my Droid Charge days
- after flashing the files, does TWRP say successful?
- perhaps you do need to a double wipe of everything prior to flashing:
1) mount everything
2) wipe cache
3) wipe dalvik cache
4) wipe system
5) factory reset/wipe data
6) wipe internal storage (if you do this, make sure to change your TiBu backup folder to your external1 directory, or this will be gone too!!!!! also make sure that the system backup you made is on the external1 directory as well
7) reboot recovery
8) install ROM
9) install GApps

funny, and the goal is to find a ROM that you're happy with and don't need to flash.
but I've been on Carbon since 7/5, and very happy.
I loved TWRP recovery, but then I did a factory reset. TWRP completely wiped my phone beyond what was needed and no I did not do a custom reset but the default one. I have a nexus 4 and the reset wiped all my data. Music, photos(even the nandroid backup that TWRP created!) CMW does NOT clean the internal data such as music and other folder, it leaves them. Why TWRP wipes it all is beyond me. Thank you for this great custom recovery however I lost a lot of data that cannot be ever replaced and lost hours and hours of time restoring everything since Titanium backups were deleted. This should not have happened. Have others experienced the same?
You probably selected internal memory by accident, I dont recognize the problem.

First of all, I checked out their site and here is why I shouldn't have to do that. When reading this http://teamw.in/whattowipe Notice the quoted "These options are there for convenience. For instance, if you're getting ready to sell your device, then it's a good idea to wipe everything on the device so that the new owner doesn't get your private data."
I'm just saying that the standard wipe that TWRP provides should not delete my internal mem.

I do it all the time. The "standard wipe" has never wiped my internal memory. In fact, they've made it more difficult to accidentally wipe it than it used to be.
How come mine deletes

Weird! Btw, when I do a standard wipe, it even gives me a warning of deleting something and blah(dont remember) Do you get that warning too?

I believe so. Should be a standard confirmation message.
When I factory reset via TWRP my internal storage does not get wiped.

Have done a factory reset three times last week through TWRP 2.6.0.0 and it always left /data/media alone. Maybe you accidentally toggled a full wipe?

Maybe, but i'm sure i just used the default wipe. Either way I am using CWM touch and dont have to worry about that. Thank you all for your support)
Just wiped my phone last night to install Paranoids latest. Using latest TWRP I selected wipe, it stated that it was a factory reset and showed everything that would be touched, afterwards I booted up and restored 5 different backups all from my internal storage so it didn't wipe it lol
You sure you selected the right thing?

Well, I guess I did something wrong and it cost me big time. Maybe I will give TWRP another try, some other time, will definitely back everything to my pc or DB before I do
Thanks to all who replied

I have the same problem with TWRP
I did a factory reset and it deleted my backup created with TWRP as well as the ROM I was about to flash along with everything else in the "virtual SD card". Maybe I am missing something since I am new to phones without an SD card.
No, I think you either did a Format DATA (which explain what it is and force you to type "yes" to continue) or you went in advance wipe and selected the Internal Storage to wipe. Factory Reset does not delete the internal memory.

You have no idea how much I love you and how stupid I feel right now. For some reason I wasn't seeing the swipe to factory reset and you made me realize that. Thanks for helping a noob.
I accidentally formatted my internal storage a before using Advance Wipe, I think they made it too easy to accidentally check the Internal Storage box. It usually goes something like this: F#$%@#$^@$#%^#$%@#%@#%!!!!!!
I also have wiped my entire phone, how on earth do i get it back online to install OS again?
CWM is better i think.

Yeah Man Happened to me too just now. Cryiing. Literally crying all my media gone awayyy.
I liked twrp more but now
I think cwm is better than twrp because of this format it did to me.
Cwm was good but it has not been updated for quite some time" while twrp continues to improve imho.
Well even i prefer cwm or philz from cm11 but people still love twrp.
