Hi there guys,
Currently using a i9505 in the UK, I think thats the right model, it's the Snapdragon model anyway. I recently installed the stability update that fixes that lines smudging in the settings menu, however I am experiencing a slightly stranger issue. Now I cannot tell you if the issue was here before or after the update, I have only had the phone for 2 days and when I got it home it had the update read to install.
Basically, if I open the messaging application the background appears to be "dirty". I know this sounds weird, and it's honestly the hardest thing to describe. Towards the outside of the handset it almost looks like there is backlight leak the the left and right, in the centre there are just lines running up and down, there is an obvious almost texture inside the display almost.
It is only visible in the pitch black, but also if I then click a thread and go into the messaging thread it isn't visible no more. Just to make it clear, on black black this does not appear, it's only on the backgrounds that are like one less than black if that makes sense -_- Is this going to be a future issue, or is it nothing?

Hi. this is a global issue. basically on the areas that is black, LEDs are off, and when you scroll the screen and bring some other colors on the areas that are black the LED take some time to show the correct color and at first, colors appears as purple. this is the smearing issue that Samsung has fixed. but Samsung has fixed it by making the LEDs not to turn off on the black areas by adding some white in black areas, and it only works in Samsung apps, like the messaging and setting. but for some reason all LEDs don't become brighter in the same amount and the screen looks unevenly grey and black. but only in samsung apps. if you look at a completely black part of screen in a third-party app you'd see that its perfectly black. unless you use screen adjuster app to fix smearing in other apps too. if so in every black display, the dirtiness would show up.
and by the way, its a problem with phone's screen, so if you look at the same thing on another display nothing will be seen. just like the screenshot you made, the issue is not visible here.

I have major display problems on any CM based ROM with crazy jumping and unreadable screens.
I have tracked the problem to the display of white lines. A screen shot is OK, so its hardware - either the Adreno200 GPU or my screen.
Problem Description:
Lines (pixel lines that is) containing a significant amount of white randomly do not display. As a result the display "scrunches up" with a gap from the bottom. Any background to the app, and sometimes the desktop will display in the gap at the bottom as it has not been written over.
Note the "bottom" in this context is the button end of the phone, thus rotating the phone leads to different screen areas being affected.
Affects all the CM ROMS I have tried, with the latest CM10.x ones being the worst. There was no issue with the stock LG ROM.

Coloured triangles produced by "OpenGL Demos" app are OK
2.
White Triangles loose lines and scrunge up. I used the Demo prog as the code is the same, just a color change!
3.
Screen shot, so not a software issue. What they should look like!
5.
Google Play. Unusable. Note hte white background is OK. It just seems to be items that are layered onto the screen.
Apps with black backgrounds and grey/coloured text are fine.
What have I tried?
I have tried messing with OpenGL HW settings with no effect.
I have messed with screen brightness.
I have tried various ROMS.
I tried moving processing from the GPU to the CPU, but that completely messed the display, and I had to re-install the ROM
I haven't tried altering the refresh rate from 60hz, but cannot find if this is possible. I think its a refresh problem, but not sure. Its almost as if the white lines are sent faster than the screen can handle and they are missed during the display phase.
The other theory is that the GPU does some special acceleration cleverness for white areas the screen can't handle.
Any ideas?
Any Adreno200 settings I could try?
Any bridges nearby I could jump off?
p.s. Photos taken from the Optimus Nexus Me port here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2397696 not that it matters which ROM it is.
Obviously, it's not "soft" problem, it's a "hard" one, replace the screen.

That was kind of where I was heading, but I was concerned that an aftermarket screen would have the same problem. This screen was fine with the stock ROM, so was hoping for a magic setting change.
Thanks for the response. Really wanted to run your Zoe ROM, but that was worse.
To be honest, I wouldn't replace the screen on this phone anymore. It isn't worth it anymore.

Agreed! I'd like this too. Samsung is letting their design team run wild without considering the advantages of the technology. Sad.
+1 I really though there was a setting hidden somewhere, But no. Black would have been great. Dont know why they though Blue was better..???!!?
I want black BG too.

Hey, I figured it out. I've attached the apk. You need to be rooted obviously but once you are, use ES File Explorer or something similar to replace the EasyOneHand.apk file with the one below. You should get the same result as the one in the screenshot.
The file is located in /system/app. Make sure that you rename the download below to "EasyOneHand.apk". The attachment manager added a 1 to the file.

I assumed it was something to do with burnin.
I.E. on amoled, black means the pixels turn off, so if you do the one-handed operation a lot, you'll quickly see an image burnin. with blue, you are using the largest of the subpixels, so maybe its a hue of blue to better handle battery drain (larger pixels need less power to illuminate to a certain percent, or there are fewer blue pixels than green, so less power needed to power, etc. could be a variety of reasons around the hardware alone).
I just figured there was a reason why it was a soft blue, and non-changeable. But then again, it could also be a simple matter of something that slipped through the cracks and wasn't even considered as an option people might like to customize.

If burn-in was a concern, then why use a white border that utilizes all the pixels? Why not use a thin light-green border with a mostly black interface instead of white. I think Samsung is just letting their design team loose without considering the benefits of the tech. Look at the phone dialer. Why is it all white?
Could you check your phones and tell me if you have different tints in left bottom corner and right bottom corner? You can see that on white background or transparent black background. Tint in the left bottom corner is more blue and in the right more yellow. Maybe it is connected with little backlight bleeding in right bottom corner? I hope you understand me.
I have found the exact same issue on mine (noticed it the second I received it in the mail and powered it on). Most noticeable when your on screen buttons are white or you have a gray keyboard, the left half being blue tinted. I'm going to try a replacement this week and see if it's any better, but it looked like a store model had the same issue. Attached is a pic in which you can make out the subtle blue tint in the upper left corner of the photo creeping its way along the edge of the phone.

I'll report back when I have a replacement. Otherwise, this screen has much better calibration than the display units and is less blue overall.
Replace with warranty.

Have a black replacement on the way. I tried to get a white one as Verizon released it after the black version in hopes of getting a newer display batch, but the guy wouldn't do it. I'll post an update on Friday or Monday when I receive it.

And?
I have the same, but for me it's more a yellow tint on the top that blue on the bottom
It's visible when you have your keyboard on, while in vertical mode. The left of the keyboard is yellowish. I had the same thing with Z1, so maybe it's a "thing" with LCDs ? ;p

The replacement exhibited the same behavior to a lesser extent. However, it also has a huge spot of dead pixels, so I'm waiting for another replacement . I think the blue at the bottom is a panel design flaw but the gradient at the bottom from left to right varies from unit to unit.
Not too sure if this is on the screen protector its self but I just noticed that my screen has a white "ghost" looking spot on the screen. It doesn't show on the screen unless I tilt the phone a certain way and it will only show up unless I'm holding in a certain way and when the screen is all black, for example on the LG logo.
Has this happened before to anyone before or do you think it's just my screen protector? (I'm scared to take it off because it's in the middle of the screen and if I do mess up the screen protector it would have been a huge waste of $ because the SP is expensive [special protector from japan])
(It seems like the white ghost only shows up in a black screen, other colors are fine and the spot does not show?)

Wow I didn't know anyone else had this. I noticed I have this spot on my screen and it's seems like it's a bugged pixel or smthing. It's not from the screen protector.

The weird thing on mine when I use a dead pixel fixing app from the market and I change the colour to like red or green or any colour that isn't black the white spot doesn't show at all. But when I switch to a black colour I can see the spot.
Does this happen to you?
İ have same problem as this description. İ can see the ghost spot brigt black colour.. Anyone knows what is it
I have it too, however I don't see it during normal operation so it doesn't bug me that much. With how big it is though, I don't believe it to be a pixel. Possible defect in the screens maybe?
I replace my screen and digitizer about 4w ago and now i have spotted those dots on the screen. Like those are higlighting where they thouch. Anyone finding fix or do i have to replace my screen again?

Did either of you find a fix, or did it get any worse? Just noticed this in last week. Not too annoying but not great, especially when out of warranty!

Hi there ! I've got a problem with my OPX Amoled display. As You may know, Amoled uses only this pixels, which are necessary. So when there is a completely black wallpaper set, the screen should be "off like". But.... My screen is still a bit gray ! I don't know if every OPX has this issue or just mine. I would be greatfull if someone would also check it.
What You have to do ?
It's simple:
1) Just download this plain black wallpaper from here: https://cdn-images.xda-developers.com/direct/9/3/8/3/9/5/uploadfromtaptalk1331261546079.jpg
2) Download it to Your OPX and open it. BUT REMEMBER IT MUST BE COMPLETELY DARK IN YOUR ROOM. SO PLEASE CHECK IT AT NIGHT. ALSO YOUR EYES MUST GET USED TO DARKNESS TO SEE IF EVERYTHING IS OK.
3) Post here if everything is ok.
I'll appreciate evry post.
Look what i meen. Here are some photos with my problem:
http://zapodaj.net/c9efdc6e82a09.jpg.html
http://zapodaj.net/a4462bc518c9b.jpg.html
On the left side there's my friends Samsung Galaxy A5(also has Amoled display) with the same wallpaper already opened. On the right side there's my OPX. As You can see my screen is not pure black-rather gray. Samsung is not even visible although it's showing same wallpaper.
Please check it in Your OPXes !
Yes I can confirm this partially.
I recently tried DayDream while charging over night. Although most of the screen is not illuminated (exactly as it should be with AMOLED), some parts are. The edges on the right and bottom are slightly illuminated, too, but strangely the ones on the left and top are not.
So what kind of amoled is that ? -.-
My OPX has been even sent to warranty but i'm still waiting for it to come. I should be on monday. BTW i didn't get any reply from tech support if they even done anything with this issue.
Well mine works to 80% (still not good, I know) but yours seems indeed broken.
I'm curious how is it with other OPXex
I don't get the point, the background is not 100% black. It has a slight pattern of grey lines, so they are shown. Anyway in my OPX this problem seems to not exist. I have other pure black background I use for whatsapp and telegram and the screen is completely dark when Showing it at full screen.

Would You be so nice ale give a link to Your wallpaper ? I wonder if it's Google photos app bug ??
I don't have this issue at all. Sometimes when playing games like Fallout Shelter at night in bed, the screen fades to black when loading and I can't tell if it just shut off from me not touching it because the AMOLED display turns all of the black pixels off. You WILL notice when there's any lit pixels on the display the surrounding area will be lit too, even if black/off because the light bleeds. That's just how light works.
ooops i gave a link to the wrong wallpaper. I'll update it in a second.
Done, check this one

Yeah there definitely shouldn't be anything showing at all unless it wasn't completely black, which that photo is (all 00000)

Yes, that's happening on my device when DayDream is on.
BUT there's no reason that the edges should 'bleed' too. This is definitely an issue since only the right and bottom border are affected. The left and top ones stay off as they should be.
To be fair they don't light up very much (so it's not on or off like binary), but it's noticeable.
Try enabling the OOS dark mode and going into settings. That should look 100% black. If not, there's probably something wrong with your screen.
Mine looks entirely black. I've tried comparing it to other phones with AMOLED displays (like Galaxy S6) and it looks exactly the same when showing black.

No, I don't use Google Photos but I downloaded it just to check. I don't seem to be having the problem you're having. My screen is the same color as that in settings with dark mode enabled.
