Poor Signal after Replacing Digitizer - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Originally I had great service 3-4 bars continually, I dropped my S4, got a small crack it, tried to replace just the glass screen and I mistakingly hit the digitizer and had to replace it. I replaced the digitizer and have the phone on, however I am barely able to make any calls now. In the last 6 hours I was able to make 1 successful call. Even wigle wifi where I would usually see ATT at around -103db is showing -110db or not showing the ATT signal at all. Even going down to where I know normally I get -59 db to ATT I am getting no signal or in and out signal.
I have tried to swap out the internal antennas.
What is suggested? I have obviously turned the phone off and on multiple times during the last 6 hours, so something more informative than the basic, please....

Where did you have the digitizer replaced?

Where did I get it from?
I replaced it myself. It was a very simple replacement, but I do not see what role the digitizer would play in the signal?

Just confirmed even being less than 100ft away from a tower. I have no bars, previously I had 5 bars in the same area. It fails to register on ATT as well.... seems something is funky with the radio or antenna. I have swapped out 3 antennas of different length, all giving the same results.
It must be the schematic of this board. It is for sprint, not ATT. Although the PCB has the radio on it, it seems like the bottom of the attachment has 2 separate antenna connectors where as my PCB has one.
Odd. Very Odd! I am going to grab a I-377 one AT&T logo and see if that helps. It is something with antennas because even when I remove the antenna the signal is identical.

You need an att one that's why.

Same problem with the GSM version of the Nexus 7. You can use the bezel from the 32 GB WiFi model, but it won't have these special little contacts needed for the radio to work property. You need the AT&T parts. Always get parts specifically for your model number.

Fix antenna/reception issues?

Has anybody had a problem where the reception is really bad on the phone? Previously, my reception was fine. However, the phone fell off the couch and onto some hardwood flooring yesterday. I believe the problem started after that. I am only able to receive 0-1 signal bars now, whereas the phone maintained full bars in my house prior to the drop. The phone goes into and out of service a lot as well. I'm not even sure it was the drop that is the cause of this problem because it was only from about 3 ft(height of the couch).
I'm hoping there is an easy fix.
What modem do you have?

D18 with phx 1.49 and epic experience 2.08. I did a factory reset just in case, but that did nothing...just how I anticipated.
You could try airplane toggle and prl update.
took the phone apart. hoped it was just a loose cable from the antenna. That wasn't the case. the phone is pretty much garbage now.
Did you try re-attaching both ends of the cable from the radio side to the antenna part at the bottom? Pop off the antenna module and re-attach it and see if that helps.
Sound like it might have been a cold solder joint. Drop it and the weak joint breaks. If its dead now any ways you might try heating the pcb to try and reflow the joints.

I opened up the phone but I couldn't find where the solder joint was. err. I should have looked harder.
any idea where it would be ?

which part is the antenna module? I was hoping it was a loose cable. I saw there was a cable on the right side. I tried plugging it in but it seems that it wasn't loose. I also checked all the other cables.
Is the upper right hand corner the antenna, or is it all those r2 w1 connections?
Well, if you're asking if I have really bad reception after I dropped my phone onto a hard surface, most likely breaking a solder for the antenna, then no. I haven't done that yet.
On a lighter note, the DK17 modem is very noticeably better than the DI18 modem in 4G as well as better WiFi signal and less spotty CDMA issues. The main fix I saw was the 3G/4G hand-off being much, MUCH more seamless than it is on DI18.

Dropped my HD2 and now it gets horrible reception :/

So an irresponsible night of heavy drinking and dancing led to my phone making a crashing debut on the dance floor. I lost my battery cover, and I figured that's why my reception became so horrible and couldn't get data ANYWHERE.
I got a new cover, and still I get horrible reception. SMS won't work sometimes, I drop calls like made and data is terribly slow (Edge) if it even works at all. Sometimes 3g, gprs, or hpsda (is that right?) will work but only when I'm really close to a cell tower.
Anyone know wtf i did?
Sounds like you damaged the phones radio on the inside when it hit the ground.

Yes... purely on speculation you broke one of the two brass clips that make attachment to the radio antenna on the rear case.
Nothing a quick look inside can't fix...
Good luck..
I like the sounds of that
I'll crack it open tomorrow. THX!!
WOOHOO!!!!
Turns out due to the soft case, i one of the antenna tabs was bend down. Bent it back and voila!
Thx guy! I give you internet wines, 12 internet goats, and i shall dance at your wedding!
Great to hear of your success. Glad my speculation turned out to be a validation.
Awesome
hmm, my gps stopped working a few mths ago when i dropped it, , , hope my repair goes as well as yours! (when i get around to buying a new screen)

[Q] USA t-mobile Connectivity Issues

I'm on T mobile in the usa and I'm using Nand Android, Hyper Droid CM7 2.01. I'am having issues with losing signal in areas I know I have coverage in but only shortly. It randomly goes in and out. I know this is an issue with TmoUSA. I was wondering if anyone in the usa uses a rom that does not have this issue or a solution? Thanks in advance for any help
I haven't noticed it in coredroid v1.6 but higher battery drain and more eye candy. Cymlx and the others were tested and had drops also.

Yes, TMOUSA service drops in NYC area.
I'm glad you posted this question. I'm using Typhoon CM7 MADLDR (always the latest version) and notice a few day ago a radical drop in connectivity on TMOUSA in NYC Metro area. I spent the last couple of days revisiting all the reception points from SD ROM days (verifying APN, Phone setting in "WCDMA Preferred", searching network, etc) with no luck. Now with your post I think it may have been a system problem with TMobile all along.
It seems like the signal does not have as much strength as just a few days ago. I used to get full bars inside a building, but now no service. Out in the street I get random signal drops. Im not getting service in areas I know I used to get service before. I dont think it is ROM related, as it happened before I ugraded to 3.3.8.
Data is also very unreliable. In area's I had "H" or "3G", I'm only getting "E", or nothing.
Anyone hear of system issues with TMobile USA, northeast.
Edit- I've been using 2.15.50.14 Radio since the beginning of Android on my HD2.
I'm getting random drops, MAGDLR 1.13, Hyperdroid GBXv12. Southwest (AZ) I change to 2.15 radio, seems to have help slightly. I don't get complete dropouts of signal as often anymore, but seems unstable, going from 5bars to 2 bars. and constant switching between 3G and Edge.
Let me mention that my original HD2 was fine. My touch screen went out. After about a month to a month and a half of trying to figure it out (swapped, digitizer, didn't work, swapped digitizer+LCD, didn't work, swapped out motherboard, worked) I finally got it working again. I'm not sure if it's the different mother board that's causing my issues or if it just coincidentally coincided with some network issues TMo US's network has been having. (I did restore the phone to all my previous settings and radio ROMs)
I've had this problem for like two months or so. Its definitly my hd2 android cause I'll be around other people on T mobile and they may not have full bars but they with be pull 3g where I'm on E or nothing at all.
I figured out that my bad conectivity issues were caused by hardware problem. I say "were" because I fixed it.
It's a bad antenna connection. I realized I had a similar signal problems on my touch pro, caused by the main board contacts not touching the antenna pads on the back cover. I found pictures of a disassembled HD2 here on XDA and saw the same design. I removed the back of my HD2 and sure enough one of the contacts was bent low and not touching the antenna. I bent it back up, reassembled the HD2, and restored full bars!!
I think the contact was flattened when I dropped my phone.
Trust me, it's a very simple fix. I'll start a thread with instruction and and pictures if anyone wants it. There's an HD2 disassembly video and pictures available here: http://m.pocketnow.com/hardware-1/official-htc-hd2-disassembly-assembly-training-videos-leaked . You only need to take off the back 4 screws and pry off the back with a flat plastic stick .
I'm writing this now on my HD2 connected by T-Mobile whete previously I had no signal.

nonpaq,
You could have the answer I'm looking for! I've been posting all over the place looking for knowledgeable input on this exact issue (including here on XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15423321&postcount=20).
As I mentioned in that post, after spending countless hours doing software-related troubleshooting to no avail, it occurred to me that there might be an internal problem with the phone. The problem is-- and quite unbelievably, considering all the other numerous resources for this device-- there isn't a whole lot of hard documentation on the HD2 cellular antenna circuitry. There's a bunch on the GPS lead, Bluetooth, WiFi, etc., but nothing on the main radio. The "official" HTC vids referenced above I've watched over a dozen times--nothing in there. All the HD2 tear-down threads with photos inconveniently ignore this part of the hardware. There's even 1 or 2 threads here on XDA in which I discovered someone erroneously labeled as the Antenna a part which is actually the Camera flash circuit.
I had pretty much exhausted everything and was about to give up, but your post could prove to be the light at the end of the tunnel.
So, before I relegate my phone to the recycling heap or sell it for parts, maybe you can journal the steps from your successful antenna "fix" (and some accompanying photos would truly be magnificent). BTW, I don't need fourteen pages of detail, just fleshing out the major points would do...
Not only would you be helping me immensely, but I've found quite a few others here on the boards with the same problem, therefore a lot of people would benefit from this guidance.
Many thanks in advance!

I live in Dallas and I have been noticing the same thing for the last few months, thinking it was HyperDroid CM7 or maybe the radio 2.15 but I'm hoping this is what the issue for me is too. Will update and post tonight or over the weekend.

Thanks for all the input. I starting to think its a hardware issue like some have mention. I've change many roms, os and, radio to no avail. So that the only thing it could be, and I have dropped my phone a few times. nonpaq if you could please grace us with a simple tutorial, it would be greatly appreciated.
Bump nonpaq help please
I'm sorry I wasn't following this thread, so I didn't realize there was interest. I am on my phone now so I don't have access to photos to upload. Its actually a very easy fix on the HD2 because this phone is so easy to open. I will look for teardown photos to point out the antenna posts, and baring that I will just redo mine and take photos. Stay tuned.

Boosting signal easily

In brief it works.
If you look at Note stuff on ebay like me then perhaps you have seen those signal booster things. Looks like a sticker. Cause it is!
Ok it looks like crap. But I know that putting in an extra antenna could help if its then able to also transmit what it receives. Don't know enough to know for sure...
But for $2.90 I decided to try. It was a small metalic sticker that arrived. Instructions look like they were written 10 years ago for phones with antenna poking out the top.
Having seen teardown pics of the Note I figured out the antenna is on the bottom below the battery. I was at a hilly farm where there is only one tower and positioning is both sensitive and predictable. Perfect for testing.
I put the sticker over the antenna and was surprised to see it dropped the 2 bar HSPA connection to a 2 bar GSM connection. Putting the phone where I could normally get 3 bar HSPA was a 2 bar HSPA. Ok this confirms the sticker does actually affect signal. Now to place it correctly.
The instructions suggest placing behind battery in the same direction as antenna. I don't know if top should face left or right but I put it there.
Signal much better than first test and better than control. Able to get 1 bar in many places which was 0 before.
2 bar HSPA became 3 bar HSPA and 3 bar became often 4 bar :-D
I've ordered some more so I can experiment with orientation and also try multiple stickers.
It was worth $3 !!!

plz post pics when you are finished with testing so we can see exactly where you put the sticker.
I bought one of these myself. from the tutorials Ive seen its seems that it must be placed on the antenna itself. & Notes antenna is placed inside the back case, so it has to be opened by unscrewing all those philips screws inside.

haha that's funny! I got a pack of 25 of those for like 10 euros about 5 years ago. I still have them around in some box. I guess I'll try it some time
measurements with and without please
I'm pretty sure that if you could boost your signal this easily and cheaply then phone manufacturers would just put them in the phone in the first place!
Allow good ol' Jade to bless you with his gospel of sensibility and reason:
It's snake oil folks.
Think about it... I have seen and used these little stickers in the past before, back in the old days. Supposedly they work using harmonic resonance attenuation. However, even if you make the signal appear to be stronger, you have to remember that there is a very big difference between signal strength and signal quality. A strong signal doesn't automatically mean a good signal. If anything, the little thing is creating signal interference which will hurt your overall performance, despite the extra bars.
Besides all of what I just said, don't you think that, if it's so cheap and it improves signal performance so well, Samsung would have included it in its original design?
Go buy a cheap beer with your $3. It'll be better, trust me.

Please... The least you could do before promoting crap is Google it. This has been proved wrong so many times in so many occasions over the years.

[Q] Where is the 3G antenna?

My Nexus 7 3G signal is weaker than before after a RMA screen replacement.
Just curious where the 3G antenna is so maybe I can fix it by myself.
There seem to be 3 antennas on the back cover: Wifi, GPS and probably an NFC antenna(?).
So what about GSM?
I have searched around and found a similar thread but the photo is now dead:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2020248
i am having the same issue. The screen cracked and I sent it to squaretrade for repair. Now the signal is weak and sporatic. Did you ever get this resolve? I think it may be EMI. They are not giving me an easy time becuse the connection still "works".
