Google Talk instead of Hangouts? - Nexus 7 (2013) General

Anyone know how to get google talk on these tablets instead of Hangouts? It sounds like it might have to be a root thing, since it doesn't look like you can uninstall Hangouts by default. I imagine the process would involve rooting, removing Hangouts, and then finding the Google Talk apk and installing that.
On my phone, I was able to "uninstall updates" from Hangouts when it replaced Talk and that restored Talk on my phone. However, since Talk was never installed on the Nexus 7 in the first place, there's nothing to roll back to.

Google Talk was replaced by Hangouts, so I'm not really sure what you're trying to do...or at least WHY you're trying to do it.

I'm not even sure if removing hangouts and downloading Talk will work or not. I have a feeling it'll just auto-update to Hangouts anyway.
If you do try it though, I've already got the Talk apk on my dev-host. Even though I've got Hangouts on my original N7, luckily I've still got Talk on my HTC so I'm fine either way

Hangouts is pretty garbage, I preferred being able to see whether people were online/away so I knew if I would get a response if I msged them or not.

Google Framework Services may not support Talk. When I uninstalled the updates to GFS Hangouts forced me to update GFS.

If you have root you can install it with a root explorer. Delete the hangouts apk from system/app and put the talk.apk in that same directory. It worked perfectly when I tried it. I recommend using es file explorer.

It's doable. I have talk 4.2.2 running. For the person who asked why: hangouts is useless, talk was so much better.

I also installed Talk 4.2.2 and it worked fine. I did not have to install any accompanying libraries.

I find Hangouts painfully slow. They didn't improve Talk, they just made it worse

I tried to do what you said, but when I run Talk.apk (the one someone posted above) it just said App not installed. Any idea why? I have root, I already removed Hangouts.apk from system/app.
Also, I noticed that even though I deleted the Hangouts apk from system/app, the app is still in my app drawer and I can run it as if nothing has changed.

I also removed hangout (have cleanrom, chose not to install hangouts) but when I try to install the talk.apk, I get a message saying "App not installed." The only thing you can do is click "done" button. Any help appreciated.

You can't just install the talk.apk file, you need to flash it through recovery

I think you should get used to Hangouts, because they are encouraging all users to use G+. Talk is not being developed and it will remain unsupported.

Ah, recovery. Where is a recovery flashable talk? I downloaded the apk linked earlier in this thread, but didn't see the recovery formatted one.

I would like to know the same. Any of you guys who said you got it working mind chiming in?

Look in my post history for the zip, make sure to read the whole post tho. I don't know if Google search & Gmail disappeared due to the flash or not.

You do know that you'll need to reboot for anything you shove into /system/app to show up, right? That might be what you missed.

You don't need to flash it in recovery. Just mount system as read write and copy it into system/app with es file manager. Then reboot.

It's really easy if you have Titanium Backup.
Find Hangouts in TB, touch and hold on Hangouts until menu appears.
Select Convert to user app.
Now Hangouts can be uninstalled since you just converted it from a system app to a user app...
Tap on Hangouts and then on uninstall.
Now exit and install Talk.apk
You are done.
Edit: Don't forget to turn off auto updates in the Google Play Store settings

I removed Hangouts.apk from system/app, and placed Talk.apk there. I rebooted, and nothing has changed. Hangouts still works and there is no Talk app in my app drawer... What gives?
Edit: After another reboot, Hangouts is now gone. However, Talk still doesn't show up as an app, despite it being in system/app. I've also tried just running the apk but I still get the "App not installed" message.

New Gmail 2.3 Won't Install (WITH FIX)

Gmail 2.3 is in the market now but when I try to install it I get "Package file was not signed correctly."
I'm currently using Gmail 2.2.1. I even found the apk online and tried to install it manually but it just says installation unsuccessful. Anybody else seeing the same problem? Any fix?
FIX:
Here is the easiest fix I could find from within this thread...
Uninstall 2.2.1 with titanium or root explorer, reboot, then install from the market.
Mine installed fine and runs fine... I'm rooted/s-off and installed the deoxed 2.2 leak and running kings #4... (just for reference)
Same here. Installed fine.

Interesting... I have the exact same setup as you right down to the kernel.
I tried rebooting the phone but that didn't help. I guess I could try to do it via adb, but I was just curious if others saw the same problem.
I am running Vitrous 2.7 (gmail 2.2.1) and it will not install from the market.

Same.
Unsure why.
Do we need a zip of the APK to apply or what?
Virtuous 2.7, won't install from the market.
CM6 - won't install from Market .
Package not signed correctly.
virtuous 2.7 - won't install.
"Installation unsuccessful"
EDIT: just saw this from rmk
"I know about it and expected it. The reason this is occurring is because our Gmail version had to be patched to work with Voice Search. I had been considering a new release the past few days anyway so this will act is a nice catalyst.
Since I am here posting, here's what I was thinking (please provide comments/feedback on it):
I want to move more apps back to /system/app. Prior to Virtuous Buddy and/or EZ-Customizer it was compelling to move as many apps as possible to /data/app. At this point, it just adds another place to have to go to remove stock apps. My thought is, it would be easier for you guys to either use Buddy or Customizer for EVERY stock app.
The trigger for this is two-fold. First, I discovered a bug in the /data/app logic which is just becoming increasingly complicated to deal with. And second, if everything is in one place, I can modify the scripts to move disabled apps rather than delete them, so you can easily toggle them off and on via buddy.
Our end result is the same, you can still easily remove everything, it just becomes simplified. I was thinking this next release would be 3.0 (given the magnitude of the change). Following 3.0, every upgrade would be made available as a small patch, like we had from 2.5 to 2.6.
What do you guys think?"
If you are rooted with a custom ROM, use Root Explorer to rename "Gmail.apk" to "Gmail.apb" then REBOOT. You should now be able to install Gmail update from Market.

Edit: it is not allowing me to rename by simply long pressing and then clicking rename. Any ideas?
I searched "gmail" in Root Explorer and found /system/app/gmail.apk and tried to rename that but it would not work. Just keeps reverting to .apk even though it says rename successful.
Could I try moving the gmail.apk to another folder and then downloading?

First thing I do every time is change to RW. Would not change it.
Didn't want to pay for root explorer, but this works:reboot into recovery, mount /system, then use the command prompt to move the Gmail.apk. Reboot and download and install from the market.
Setup: DInc running Skyraider 3.0 RC3

I got Google Voice working.

edit: Can probably ignore most of this and use this APK instead:

I've been bothered by Google Voice not working since I got my Xoom on launch day, but have been using the web portal... Until now.
I loaded up my Droid, backed up Google Voice+settings with Titanium Backup, restored it on my Xoom and it came up without doing the setup, since it already had my account settings installed. It force closed the first time but I noticed an error in the notification area... Error was asking for permission to use that email address as my Google Voice account, I accepted, re-launched Google Voice and success, full app, working as it would on the phone. Gives notifications and everything.
Enjoy!

Latest version of the free TB, whatever version that is...
There's no directory in there that starts with a .(at least, according to ls -a, I don't have Root Explorer on here, using terminal), there is a com.google.android.apps.googlevoice directory with all the subdirectories and such though.
I can't get busy box to install. I'm rooted, but it's saying my NAND is locked or it wasn't able to remount.
[edit] nevermind. I guess it didn't like that I was plugged into my computer and didn't have the debug mode on. Strange.

"People" is the display name of contacts - there is no people.apk.
If you use Google to store your contacts, then you'll need Google contact sync. If you have a Google account, then you need Google account manager. But I'm guessing that that it's already installed or you wouldn't be able to access Play store.
TB does not backup system apps, only their data. You will need to manually copy the contact apks. Then, on your ROM where you don't have people, copy the apks to /system/data, boot into recovery and wipe cache and Dalvik, and reboot. You should have people back again.

[MOD] Reactivate Facebook Sync Setting in Stock 4.2.2 [WORKING!]

STOCK 4.2.2 ONLY! ODEX & DEODEXED
Okay I have got Facebook sync working again in order to do this you must be rooted and using a root explorer to transfer the files.
To begin download the files attached below.
Extract them either to your phone or copy them over to your phone.
Next using root explorer go to data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases
DELETE the file contacts2.db-journal.
Copy the contacts2.db from the extracted file to data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases when asked if you would like to over the file currently there do so.
Make sure the contacts2.db permissions are set to rw-rw---
Restart
After reboot copy ContactsProvider.apk from the extractd zip to system/app and when asked overwrite the current file
Make sure ContactsProvider.apk has permissions set to rw-rw-r--
After reboot load facebook app and sync options should be available and should sync.

You might try downloading a dump from a earlier version of android that supported Facebook Contact Syncing.
Then use a file compare tool like WinMerg to determine the differences and location of where "raw_contacts table: is_restricted" was inserted into supported versions.

Don't be a dummy like me...
If you intend to act stupid (like I did) and attempt this fix even though you aren't running a stock ROM, make sure you back up the ENTIRE "com.android.providers.contacts" directory... not just the files you are overwriting. If things go south, the whole directory can get deleted. I have no idea how this happened, but I assume it's the OS attempting to self-correct instead of exploding entirely.
Wish CyanogenMod would merge this. I would do this fix except for it would be overwritten after flashing a new CM build which happens several times a week.

I basically summed up my blog post and posted it here.
I actually just managed to get it to work by only deleting sdcard/Android/data/com.dropbox.android
didn't need root, didn't need to do anything in /data/system
Also didn't need to reinstall Dropbox either, it just worked first time after deleting that one folder

Hmm, that didn't work for me. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact I always check to enable early releases?

delete Dropbox.apk in PlayStore....without Root and download this apk here.
LINK: DOWNLOAD

and work fine...Please do not update the app from PlayStore!!!!!
Deleting /data/system/dropbox fixed it for me. Thanks!
Edit: actually it's force closing again. It did work once though
I'm on a Nexus 7 2013 with Android L and so far none of these solutions have worked The dropbox team really just needs to update their app.

Please reup this apk.
I tried the method in the OP a few times, but it didnt seem to work at first. Then I used QuickPic to upload some photos to dropbox, which worked like a charm. Now for some reason I am able to directly use the dropbox app itself with no problems. Not sure exactly what fixed it though. Kind of weird.

Accepted. It works
Sadly this tutorial didn't work for me.
Still gettin force close every time.
I tried QuickPic and i can access Dropbox with it, but even after that the normal app still crashes
Start QuickPic, send file and then run Dropbox. QuickPic let the background.
Doesn't work either..

I tried this... didn't work It's weird because it had worked once and now it doesn't, I wonder why.
not work on everytime, that wired

i use solid explorer to access my dropbox files
None of the methods above worked for me. So I restored an old Dropbox apk from a backup and it works very well.

I was finding the same, nothing was working to get it fixed, but I could still access files in dropbox from other apps like ES File Explorer. However I really wanted the camera upload feature. I installed this old apk and it appears to be working, but I haven't tested to see if the camera upload is working. Hopefully it is... Thanks for sharing the apk.
