When I first rooted my nexus 7 I deleted the google people app because I didnt have a need for it. I recently installed tablet talk and have realised that to get the names of my contacts to syc with the texts I will need to reinstall the app. Does anyone have an apk that will install? Ive been unable to find anything on the web so far.

On the Nexus 7, there are three apps that do that... Contacts, Contacts storage and Google contacts sync. There is no people app.

Did you not do a nandroid backup before messing around removing stuff? You could use TB to extract out of that or use other methods.

You are just looking at the App Drawer... Many times what you see is not what you got...
Now take a file manager and go find that People app... you won't find it.

"People" is the display name of contacts - there is no people.apk.
If you use Google to store your contacts, then you'll need Google contact sync. If you have a Google account, then you need Google account manager. But I'm guessing that that it's already installed or you wouldn't be able to access Play store.
TB does not backup system apps, only their data. You will need to manually copy the contact apks. Then, on your ROM where you don't have people, copy the apks to /system/data, boot into recovery and wipe cache and Dalvik, and reboot. You should have people back again.

I've been bothered by Google Voice not working since I got my Xoom on launch day, but have been using the web portal... Until now.
I loaded up my Droid, backed up Google Voice+settings with Titanium Backup, restored it on my Xoom and it came up without doing the setup, since it already had my account settings installed. It force closed the first time but I noticed an error in the notification area... Error was asking for permission to use that email address as my Google Voice account, I accepted, re-launched Google Voice and success, full app, working as it would on the phone. Gives notifications and everything.
Enjoy!

Latest version of the free TB, whatever version that is...
There's no directory in there that starts with a .(at least, according to ls -a, I don't have Root Explorer on here, using terminal), there is a com.google.android.apps.googlevoice directory with all the subdirectories and such though.
I can't get busy box to install. I'm rooted, but it's saying my NAND is locked or it wasn't able to remount.

But it says file not Installed.
I dismounted system file but still doesn't let me install email.apk.
Thanks for your patience.
I m not familiar with es file explorer
But for root explorer, u just need to copy n paste to systrm/app folder you have to just press on w/r on top once before it.
Then long press on file n change the permission rw r r (just look othet apk there)
You need not to install, once you put file thr is enough.

starting from scratch is not an option.
@ketan:
email.apk is (in samsung roms) only the widget, there are also the "exchange services", which might be also important in this case.
also, which email version to choose (or for us: to provide) depends heavily on the OP's rom! if he is on ICS the GB email.apk wont work, even if he is on AOSP the stock samsung email.apk wont work, due to missing parts in the framework!
@OP:
if a data wipe is not enough (which i doubt, cause i guess the system app from /system/app is missing) you would have to reflash your system partition as well. then it should work again!

Many thanks for your detailed response.
I am running the following:
model #: GT-N7000
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version: N7000XXLA4
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.14-ver.3.2
[email protected] #3
Build number: Rocket-v19-XXLA4-eybee1970
I'm apprehensive about flashing or formatting because I am not very familair with the process.
A friend of mine rooted my device then installed rocket rom for me. I mean I know about it and watched him do it but to do it myself would require a lot of time. Then also I'll have to edit my device to get it to the way I want it... a hassle.
Why cant someone check what .apk files are needed for the exchange server on their device.
I will cross-check mine and the ones that are missing from mine will be added.
Should be as straightforward as that I think.
Thanks guys.

Okay I have got Facebook sync working again in order to do this you must be rooted and using a root explorer to transfer the files.
To begin download the files attached below.
Extract them either to your phone or copy them over to your phone.
Next using root explorer go to data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases
DELETE the file contacts2.db-journal.
Copy the contacts2.db from the extracted file to data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases when asked if you would like to over the file currently there do so.
Make sure the contacts2.db permissions are set to rw-rw---
Restart
After reboot copy ContactsProvider.apk from the extractd zip to system/app and when asked overwrite the current file
Make sure ContactsProvider.apk has permissions set to rw-rw-r--
After reboot load facebook app and sync options should be available and should sync.

If anyone can help me I'll post the zip file with everything going so we can have facebook sync back.
I'm using this guide to help me but its not very clear on the part I'm stuck on. Anyone able to help?
Once I get stock going I'll look at getting other ROM's going that currently don't support it.

You might try downloading a dump from a earlier version of android that supported Facebook Contact Syncing.
Then use a file compare tool like WinMerg to determine the differences and location of where "raw_contacts table: is_restricted" was inserted into supported versions.

Don't be a dummy like me...
If you intend to act stupid (like I did) and attempt this fix even though you aren't running a stock ROM, make sure you back up the ENTIRE "com.android.providers.contacts" directory... not just the files you are overwriting. If things go south, the whole directory can get deleted. I have no idea how this happened, but I assume it's the OS attempting to self-correct instead of exploding entirely.
Wish CyanogenMod would merge this. I would do this fix except for it would be overwritten after flashing a new CM build which happens several times a week.

Anyone know how to get google talk on these tablets instead of Hangouts? It sounds like it might have to be a root thing, since it doesn't look like you can uninstall Hangouts by default. I imagine the process would involve rooting, removing Hangouts, and then finding the Google Talk apk and installing that.
On my phone, I was able to "uninstall updates" from Hangouts when it replaced Talk and that restored Talk on my phone. However, since Talk was never installed on the Nexus 7 in the first place, there's nothing to roll back to.
Google Talk was replaced by Hangouts, so I'm not really sure what you're trying to do...or at least WHY you're trying to do it.
I'm not even sure if removing hangouts and downloading Talk will work or not. I have a feeling it'll just auto-update to Hangouts anyway.
If you do try it though, I've already got the Talk apk on my dev-host. Even though I've got Hangouts on my original N7, luckily I've still got Talk on my HTC so I'm fine either way

Hangouts is pretty garbage, I preferred being able to see whether people were online/away so I knew if I would get a response if I msged them or not.
Google Framework Services may not support Talk. When I uninstalled the updates to GFS Hangouts forced me to update GFS.
If you have root you can install it with a root explorer. Delete the hangouts apk from system/app and put the talk.apk in that same directory. It worked perfectly when I tried it. I recommend using es file explorer.

Also, I noticed that even though I deleted the Hangouts apk from system/app, the app is still in my app drawer and I can run it as if nothing has changed.
I also removed hangout (have cleanrom, chose not to install hangouts) but when I try to install the talk.apk, I get a message saying "App not installed." The only thing you can do is click "done" button. Any help appreciated.
You can't just install the talk.apk file, you need to flash it through recovery
I think you should get used to Hangouts, because they are encouraging all users to use G+. Talk is not being developed and it will remain unsupported.
Ah, recovery. Where is a recovery flashable talk? I downloaded the apk linked earlier in this thread, but didn't see the recovery formatted one.

You do know that you'll need to reboot for anything you shove into /system/app to show up, right? That might be what you missed.
You don't need to flash it in recovery. Just mount system as read write and copy it into system/app with es file manager. Then reboot.

It's really easy if you have Titanium Backup.
Find Hangouts in TB, touch and hold on Hangouts until menu appears.
Select Convert to user app.
Now Hangouts can be uninstalled since you just converted it from a system app to a user app...
Tap on Hangouts and then on uninstall.
Now exit and install Talk.apk
You are done.
Edit: Don't forget to turn off auto updates in the Google Play Store settings

Have you exported your contacts? If not, do that first - to External Card, OK?
Then [Settings] [Apps] scroll over to [All] & down to [Contacts] There are 2 items for Contacts, the 2nd will clear all contacts and you can set up your personal one again then Import your Contacts from extSD - I'd clear Data on both, then set up your account then add other back in and see how you go.
My contacts are backed up at Google.
To clear the user before i do it?

You would be clearing Contacts info on the phone, not in Google. There's clear cache and clear data and the 2 settings - then go back into contacts and import your saved ones and (hopefully) should all be working again.
This is what i get...
Even when the contacts list is empty

By the way.... after i cleared cache and data it's refiling the cache and data again even before i enter any app

OK... more info needed. What is your current ROM? Can you DL Phone Info Samsung from Play and tell us what the details are from there? i.e. BL, Base and PDA?
Before you tried the Sammobile DL, what ROM were you on?
Did Contacts ever work properly or if it did, what was the last thing you changed before you noticed it stopped working?
Are there any other Google/Samsung things not working?
Just got the the phone on ebay few days ago.
All the other things works just fine
Contacts works properly just adding new contact doesn't work
OK... WHERE are your contacts? Go into Contacts and then Settings - Contacts to Display... what does it say?
Try choosing various ones like Device, or SIM card and see if you can add to them?
I removed the contacts before deleteing the cache and data to make sure that same old contact is not making any problem.
they are backed up on Google. .. ive synced them again now.
The problem is only that Contacts is stooped when tring to add new contact
Try putting contacts on device, & show only them, then see if you can add? Maybe its trying to put new contacts direct to Google instead of sync them there?
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Free mobile app
I don't understand what you mean. .. can you tell me what to do?

When you add contacts you get a choice as to where they go. SIM card, Device or Google... You also get a choice in Settings as to which Contacts get displayed. Sometimes when you Display All you get 2 or 3 identical contacts showing. You get rid of the extras by showing ONLY Google or Device or SIM.
So... where are your Contacts? Click on each of the 'Contacts to Display' options and see what you get. If all your contacts are ONLY on Google then maybe yu have an issue with adding contacts directly to Google and instead maybe put your contacts on the phone...
