Don't take this offensively... But I want to ask people who don't root their Nexus 7, why don't you? It seems like people who aren't rooted are running into problems more than the people who are rooted.

Even though I have all my phone rooted I never considered rooting the tablet. It runs stable enough, is a nexus device so will be updated to the latest android version which the hardware supports and most importantly Sky Go doesn't work reliably on rooted devices

My example of the tablet not running reliably is the EMMC slow down because fstrim wasn't enabled until 4.3 by default. While rooted, you had the option of manually running fstrim or using an app to do it. Though Sky Go seems like a reason I'd stay away from rooting. Some apps even bar you from using them. I'd probably using OTA Root Keeper and temporarily disable root.

I've never really experienced any slowdown, but strangely enough I was watching an xda video this morning about something related. I have tried OTA Root Keeper and similar apps and Sky Go seemed to detect them. Only way I found to do it was to as you say temp unroot, uninstall super user app etc. Found it too much of a pain.
If I did start experiencing issues like slowdowns etc, I wouldn't hesitate to root. One thing I am missing is per app DPI settings from PA.

Here, maybe try this for bypassing those pesky I have root problems.

Edit : may not work if you are on 4.3 unfortunately.

I did actually use this and it did work on 4.2.2
Only problem is you have to re-authenticate all your root apps. Not a big issue, I suggested to the author that before uninstalling the root app it backed up the data then restored it on reinstalling.

What about using multi-ROM to dual boot a rooted ROM and a bone stock ROM? It would be the best of both worlds and you'd only need a simple reboot to switch back and forth.

I just received my nexus 7 and there's already an update available. I plan on rooting and flashing a custom rom. Should I update or not? I know sometimes an update can cause problems when it comes to rooting and whatnot so I thought I'd ask first.. thanks for any feedback!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Yes update it. I updated to 4.1.1 first then unlocked, then rooted with permanent cwm then flashed touch cwm from rom manager.
Use nexus toolkit though so you can restore stock recovery to flash Amy new updates and root again easily.
Also no harm updating to 4.1.1 and then rooting we have methods set up for that right now.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
You can root it before or after update, you're just updating to 4.1.1, or you can install a ROM that is already there, if you're rooting either way, just go for it right away
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Thanks a lot for your quick responses! Lovin it so far no issues like I've heard about.

This is a nexus device. Unlike other devices you never need to fear an update may break your ability to root.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Judging from the board their really isnt much of a need to atleast not until the OTA update comes out or when custom roms and kernels come out for 4.3.. I mean battery life on 4.3 has been hit or miss, Rooting 4.3 is still buggy and may not work right?
I'll get it when my phones finally get the OTA I can wait to root if need be. Just as I can wait for custom roms and kernels too.

just flash the .33/.83 hybrid radio, download the network app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mangelow.network), select lte/gsm (auto), change your apn from epc.tmobile.com to fast.t-mobile.com and enjoy.
I actually jumped on it right away, but evidently my favorite app (Podkicker Pro) needs tweeking to be compatible with it because it keeps crashing every time i open it. I went back to 4.2.2 for now but once Podkicker is updated, then I'll jump back onto 4.3. My only regret is that I'll miss the original gtalk app. So far, I am NOT a fan of Hangouts.

I jumped. I'll install PA4.3 when its dropped tho. But I really like 4.3 Improvement all around.
Waiting for PA...
Can't help with the fact that I have to sacrifice so many features from custom ROM and kernel for the "upgrade". The android version can wait.
nevermind I was gonna do it but my drivers are messed up or its windows 8 fault but cmd doesnt recognize my Nexus 4 so I'll just wait for the POT update. screw it

I upgraded back when 4.3 first came out and I didn't like it. Two main reasons were that flash absolutely wouldn't work even with adobe flash installed and stock browser installed. I know flash isn't officially supported in jellybean but it works almost flawlessly on 4.2.2 with the right browsers. Couldn't get it working at all on 4.3 and there are a few content sites out there that I enjoy where flash is still required unfortunately. Hopefully flash will eventually be completely consumed by html5. The other main reason was that I couldn't get any type of adblock to function on 4.3 where as on 4.2.2 it works fine. I would like to take advantage of the supposed stability that 4.3 offers but I don't think its worth the cost of having no flash. I guess I could live with having to see adds. Does anyone know if there is a way to get flash working on 4.3?

Btw, "adaway" works great on rooted 4.3, try it.

I want to root my Nexus 4 and install newest CM. One problem is, that there is Android 4.4 update comming soon. So if I root my Nexus and install CM, can I get my phone back to stock and update Android to 4.4?
Yes. You can either flash the 4.4 images, or simply install a 4.4 based custom ROM (the more practical solution my opinion) since you will already have installed a custom recovery.

Has anyone updated to 4.3 official using any of the roms from sammobile? I see the nordic countries 4.3 is available, I normally use either this, the German or Swedish version, I've even used a Hong Kong one before now lol, but with the recent changes Sammy have made regarding knox and location lock etc, I'm a bit dubious to upgrade.
They normally just work, just checking this is still the case before I end up with an expensive paperweight.
There is a thread somewhere by chainfire with a fix to sammys region lock. The lion rom is pretty much stock with nox removed, you just have to use devil's kernel for wifi

Cheers mate. I flashed it the other day haven't got around to posting an update yet.
Yes it has knox, but I'm not going to be rooting this device because I use it for sky and a few other apps that require unrooted.
Impressions are good so far. Everything is smooth and all my apps are working as they were before, including the sky sports app which got an update recently to work with 4.3.
One thing to note though, if you use allshare cast dongle. It has a problem working with 4.3 devices that have been updated. So if you run into this issue the fix is to do a factory reset.
There is a workaround for rooted devices on here, it's in the S4 section.
A bit of a pain having to reset I know but seems to be the only solution for unrooted devices that run into it.

Hi mate
I'm also using the sky go app, and on stock 4.1 I've just been using ota rootkeeper to toggle root when needed. I really need root for the viper audio mod.
I'm just wondering which 4.3 ROM you've got it to work on? With 4.1.2 it NEEDS to be stock ROM and kernel for sky go to work. If I upgrade I want to get a ROM without knox, but any custom ROM won't work.
Please let me know as right I'm sticking to 4.1.2.
Thanks
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
There weren't any custom rom's available for the 7105 that were stock with knox/location lock removed when I last checked (may be different now?). I just used the nordic rom from sammobile.
If there's none available I think you'll need to wait for a dev to rip the rom and remove knox if you don't want it. Unless you have the time and skills to diy I got the skills but not the time, unfortunately
As I said, I'm not bothered about knox at the moment. I was more bothered by location lock, but I've not had any issue so far.

Some apps are funny as to what they decide is a security risk. Sky are so far up Apple's arse they tend to look for anything that's NOT as the manufacturer released as a security issue. It's actually bollocks but try telling them that.
My other Note 2 is rooted and running 4.3 without all the bs. But most of the apps I need simply won't install/run due to idiotic requirements of the app provider. Hence why I have a 2nd note 2 which has been rooted but I had to unroot and reset the flash counter to get these apps to work. Guess Sammy aren't too fussed, they did get 2 sales from me lol
