Is it possible to downgrade firmware via Odin? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

So I got a second hand GS4, but it's fully updated, and I can't run certain MMI codes to SIM unlock the phone. I think it's because the firmware blocks them. I was wondering if I could downgrade it via Odin. I found a thread containing the UCUAMDB firmware for Odin; would it be okay to flash this? Or would there be problems downgrading?

You cannot downgrade.

I suggest you use the search function because a lot of information has already been posted about the subject that you will need to read and review. You could also look at the "suggested" or "similar post" threads that show up when you are posting a question. You need to know different things for different firmwares and there is also information about things that might go wrong and how to fix them. Good luck.

Gotcha. Sorry about that.

unable to unlock galaxy s4 i337

I searched and see some people are having the same problem as I do.
My problem, I can not get my ATT galaxy S4 SGH-I337 to unlock. I tried the free method. I bought code, two places, got the same code. But no luck on unlocking this bad boy. Anyone figured out how to unlock it yet? What can I do?
you mean SIM unlock, yes? cell un locker.net worked for me, as did free method. i was going overseas, tried free method which worked with t-mob in USA, but wanted the code just to be safe.
You could use the search function and read the threads that are just like yours: "how do I unlock when free version fails" type thing.
Yes it takes a few minutes to review the first few pages of the general and QA forums, or to use the search function, but I promise you that others have already posted solutions that worked for them.

Thanks for all the replies. As I have said, I tried the free ways of unlocking and the buying the code way to unlocking. But still no luck. I can not get it to sim unlock. Anyone having this problem?
Did you try fastgsm.com 15 dollar cable (usb power cord) unlock..worked like a charm for me when I was in the same boat your in

I'm the same boat here bought the code (2 places same code), code will not unlock, now I'm on CM10, but I can not find anywhere that ROM version makes a difference to unlocking did not with teh Atrix and S3 I unlocked. Still kind of stuck, Maybe is it is the F3 modem or something else, really just do not know or understand why I'm encountering issues since other than this thread everyone seems to be having no issues.
Thanks,
ERIC

It works, you missed a step somewhere, try once again. It is the US version you have correct?
Need held unlocking sgh-i337m Telus version
I am new at this. First post ever.
Followed the instructions here to free unlock my phone
Went through the steps twice and did not unlock my device.
So I thought I did something wrong so I went to try one last time. However this time the phone won't allow me past the 1st step.
I enter: *#0011#
Then menu back
Then menu input 1
And at this point the phones restarts. It won't allow me to the full service menu.
Can someone help me please.
The phone is brand new and at one point the was a Samsung update the was downloaded and installed. Don't know if this download changed the system and access to service menu
For some people it fails doing the free method even though they followed it correctly and jt messes up something internally that prevents even the official code from working. The only work around to unlocking it at this stage is via a service called FastGSM from what I've read.

fastgsm cable does not work if your baseband version ends in anything later than ME1. Mine is MF3 and I did not understand this until after I bought the software for USB cable unlock from fastgsm. I have not found any method that will work for me so far.
This is old, but I just want to say that usb cable unlocking worked for me where others failed
Not this one
I spent hours searching forms, for me too non of the free methods worked, until I combined some of them and made a thred, this will work, I just did it myself
I just posted to xda http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48174440#post48174440

Hey everyone... so I have a problem and im not sure if anything will work... so I tried the free unlock method but it didnt work...but then my phone updated to the mf3 baseband... and when I got an unlock code it was denied.. I looked it up and its because I tried the free method... anyone know how I can get back onto mf3... would kies emergency recovery fix anything... quick replies would be appreciated since i just flew to england and need my phone
Afaik, if you try the free unlock too many times the phone permanently locks the ability to unlock it. There is no way to get that ability back.
I only tried the free unlock mode once, but now I can't get it to unlock with the unlock code I have. And I know there is a way if you have the old firmware to fix the problem, but I was wondering if Kies emergency restore would revert it back to the old firmware, or using Odin and a sammobile firmware would fix my issues

Don't listen to other forums. Stick to the real deal Xda att s4 section. There is no way to Odin, kies restore, etc to an older firmware if you took the official MF3 update. As to unlock, you can try fastgsm. They charge $15 via remote PC. Many folks used it since using the free unlock method toasted their unlocked via code method.

[Q] Speaking Of Possibled bricked phones

I may have soft bricked my S4. I was trying to unlock the SIM for it yesterday and stopped due to a problem with getting the MSL so i just continued to use my phone as normal after following these galaxys4root(.)com/galaxy-s4-tutorials/how-to-unlock-sim-on-sprint-galaxy-s4/instructions I got to step 11 and gave up for the day.
I tried to load a different MDL and i kept getting a fail. Now i cant even boot my phone up to the OS.
Any thoughts of even just pointing me in the right direction :|
Im now at firmware upgrade encountered an iussue please select recovery mode in Kies & try again
Ill be using Samsung kies and probably start over
Id still like help on trying to actually sim unlock a SPH L-720 since ive yet to find a newish guide that walks through the downgrade to get the MSL# and such

Sounds like your on 4.3 if that's the case there is no downgrading to anything lower. In case your going to just have to Odin a 4.3 firmware..
Use this:

So i decided to message samsung and they told me go to best buy and have them reflash my OS think they can put it to 4.2.2?

If you were on 4.3 already than even Best Buy won't be able to install 4.2.2. I would save my self the hassle and just odin the MK2 tar file from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2601443 it is the fastest download speed. Then when you go to do the sim unlock, autoprime's thread has a link to an MDC modem only file to flash for the downgrade. You can not downgrade the whole firmware, but you can downgrade just the modem to accomplish the unlock.

[Q] Hi all, I 've been reading for two days now on how to unlock my sprint s4 ....

to use with straight talk, and I just have to bug you all with a few questions.
The basics: I have an active Straight Talk sim card that I want to put in my galaxy S4 that I just purchased (did not know it was Sprint until it was too late). Now, after hours of trying, bricking, unbricking, rooting and getting false hope from the [HOWTO] / [GUIDE] SPH-L720 Domestic SIM Unlock T-Mobile:AT&T:metroPCS:Straighttalk thread (which I assume would be my answer to my problem if not for the fact every attempt at flashing to mf9 bricks my phone because Odin fails everytime), I don't know what to do.
As of right now, my Sprint GS4 has been factory reset to Android V 4.3, baseband version L720VPUEMJA, with the model # SPH-L720. Can I even achieve what I want to do with these parameters and is there anyone out there willing to give me hand?
Thanks for any replies!
First you didn't completely read through the thread, secondly you can't go back so to unlock you need to flash a MDC modem and follow instructions

I mean. I read a lot. I'll be the first to admit I just may not have picked up on something in those 35 pages. Also, i believe I tried to flash my modem through the Odin one-click, but the process would hang when trying to establish the connection. I know the answer is on this forum somewhere, and I can usually follow these type of tech tutorial fairly well, but I'm just stuck. Do you have any specific advice?
If you are on the OTA MJA modem with MJA bootloader with Knox I do not think you can downgrade to any other previous modem without the issues you are describing with bricking and soft bricking.

You wouldn't have a link to that modem file? Maybe I was trying to us the wrong one. I was using "SPH-L720_MDC_Modem.tar.md5", and the program would just stall.

You can downgrade let me find a link
First unlock for international use: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2415587 follow that guide then go over to domestic and get a unactivated sim card to make sure its working I used T-Mobile unlocked it then canceled my sprint contract. Only downside is for aosp ROMs you have to do a couple edits for them to work
And always run Odin as admin

It worked! ...kind of! I can now make calls, which is a HUGE step forward! Thank you so much!
The only thing is that I cannot send/receive multimedia messages, I have tried all the APNs listed at this page http://apn-settings.com/samsung-galaxy-s4-straight-talk-apn-settings/, but none work. Any ideas?

These are my only unlocking options?

OK, I just come across an S4 SGH-i337M running 5.0.1 locked to Bell. Searching Google is fairly mind boggling as everyone has their own method. In my situation, I'm pretty sure I have come to this solid conclusion. Two options only,,
1. Buy unlock code or
2. Downgrade to at least 4.4.2 and use the hidden codes method.
Can #2 be done safely? Some sites say if you do try downgrade from Lollipop to KK, it will brick. What would a safe procedure be if possible.
Thanks

Thanks, seen this but wasn't sure. I assume that flashing back to Lollipop isn't necessary if one chooses to stay at 4.4.2 for a while. Heard some comments about increased battery drainage etc. on Lollipop.
Will try this once the new charge port shows up and I can replace.
The hidden codes method won't work, unfortunately. Let me know if you are successful.
Thanks.

Thanks, will do. Hopefully will be getting to it tonight. Here's one of the confusing things I was talking about. Been doing alot of reading, and in your instructions, you install TWRP to flash SuperSU and such. Then, reading elsewhere, I see this "SAFESTRAP IS THE ONLY RECOVERY WE CAN USE!
Don't even try flashing another one.", posted in a thread about AT&T SGH-I337 model. Well, here it is, halfway down in the second post, bolded in red. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221 Just trying to get things figured out, it's been a couple years since I last played with the Galaxy, just getting back into it now.
The AT&T version of the s4 is the Sgh-i337 and, if it was running stock 5.01, the bootloader would be locked and twrp cannot be used.
The Canadian version of the s4 has the letter "m" at the end of the model number and the bootloader is not locked which allows the installation of twrp and custom ROMs that are not based on a tw kernel.

Thanks, this method seemed to work,,just one problem I overlooked, but I just assumed this phone would work on AWS1700,,wrong lol. I was reading the 141 page thread and there seems to be a few different methods for doing this. With my S3, I only had to flash the NV and run a script on every boot as the nv rewrite would not stick. Is this so as well with the s4 too,,or is there a method to make it a permanent stay. I didn't plan on updating to 5.0.1 quite yet,,but will do if needed. Do you no of a recommended/preferred method for this?
Did you test the phone with another sim card? Hopefully, you will not be prompted to enter a network unlock code.
For AWS, I'm not sure what needs to be done as I am using a Telus s4 on Bell.

It was locked with Bell, my provider is Eastlink,,I finally got the AWS1700 band working, but kept losing it when the phone went to sleep. Updated to the NE1 modem, then had to flash the AWS again and all seems to be working fine. Hopefully it holds up. Thanks for everything.
Glad it is all working. We're all here to help and learn from each other.
