[Q] EFS: failed to mount - Still have IMEI - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
I'm with a big problem here. This happens after I tried to change from TWRP recovery to PhilZ, flashing it in the recovery. When I was flashing the PhilZ, an error appeared on the screen (unable no mount efs, or something like that) and I rebooted the phone.
After rebooting, I saw that it was in the Factory Mode (grey box, with yellow words) and, trying to fix it, I figured out that my EFS folder is empty.
I tried many things that I found here in XDA, but nothing happens because my phone is not mounting the efs folder, so I can't modify the files.
I still have IMEI, I'm able to make phone calls and everything else. My only problem is that the phone is in this Factory Mode and my EFS folder can not be mounted. I tried to make the backup of the folder some times, without success.
I reflashed TWRP and I tried to make a backup of the efs folder on it, but it says that the folder has 0mb and give this message: E: unable to mount '/efs'
So, I found this this app:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2359323
Now I have a backup of the efs folder, made by this app, but I don't know what I am supposed to do to mount the efs partition again.
Can someone help me?
I'm with stock rom, rooted and have busybox installed.
Thank you very much!

That app will not help you at all you might want to try to Odin back to stock and see if that helps it sounds like you're e EFS folder got erased in the process which holds a lot of very important information maybe if you odin back to stock that will help but no guarantees

I'm downloading the stock now, and will try ASAP.
Also, I found that a guy solved this problem in a galaxy Tab 10.1.

After over 24 hours of work, I found the solution. For others with efs mount failure and factory mode/no lock screen issue:
1. After root, install Busybox.
2. If your efs folder is empty like mine was, you can't follow most of the other guides. To fix this, I followed beechlj2's suggestion for Terminal Emulator:
su
mke2fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
mount -w -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
reboot
This forced efs to mount and restored the contents of my efs folder (using the generic imei).
3. Using the pit file android_fastboot_emmc_full_p4_16g_32g.pit and Honeycomb stock, reflash and repartition in Odin. When I rebooted I received another error that data failed to mount, the next step fixes this.
4. Boot into stock recovery and Factory Reset.
I am not an expert. I don't know if this will work for your tablet and I'm not suggesting you follow my steps without expert opinion; that's your decision. This solved the issue for me, I hope it helps.

I tried it in the S4 but I got an error that the terminal was not able to find mke2fs, so probably it is another location on the S4.
Does anyone know something about it?
Thank you!

The efs partitions are not always in the same location on different devices. The mmcbl....is the partition location. You're lucky if it only failed when trying to write to it. Worst case, you permanently bricked your device. I know enough to be dangerous, unfortunately not enough to help you in your situation.

If it we're me, I'd Odin back to stock and hope for the best.

Sorry about the double post, but what if I check re-partition in Odin? Will it do all the partitions again?
Thanks!

Nope. I have already tried on my device. The only thing I can run without any issues at all is Cyanogenmod roms.
Flashing stock firmware just brings factory mode back
You can remove the grey box easy enough by rooting and removing factory test .apk but the lockscreen and power menu are still missing.
It seems rare to be in this situation.
If I find a fix I'll definitely let you know!

He means efs folder. If you flashed the initial cm7 there should be a folder called backup on your SD card. Inside all your IMEI information should be there. Search the forums for more information on this problem. There are SEVERAL other users that have experienced this problem as well as resolved it.

If you look at the very bottom of the first post it's the instructions on how are you going to restore it.
If I were you Id make sure you lost your efs data.
Did you check the /efs folder to see if its empty?
Okay i tried the busybox command and it doesnot work.. i also tried thre others
Is your phone unlocked?
I have some files here which you would just put your efs folder then it will restore it for you. But i really can't remember the exact process.
I tried doing that with linda file manager but it said read only... kinda sucks cuz that would have been easy... anyways.. i have all those files on the root of my sd... i also tried modifying the code by adding /sdacard/ before /nv_data.bin to select were the file is (root of sdcard)
Don't edit anything on your original efs folder.
Ok, i have the files uploaded. But before anything please don't blame me in case whatever happens to your phone. I used this in the past because my IMEI also got screwed. It's your decision whether you're going to use it or not.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/23360211/insert_efs_save.zip
Here's how i remember it.
1. So you there's an efs folder there and you replace that efs folder with your original efs folder. Again, your going to replaced it not put inside it.
2. You have to be rooted of course, and connect your phone while on USB debug.
3. There's a file called in insert efs folder.bat you click it and it's going to show you what to do.
4. Pray that it would work.
Again, please don't blame me. It's your phone so don't do this if you're not comfortable doing it. But hey, you've got nothing to lose.
Wait what rom are you using right now?
Im using cm7 n im gonna try that now
Try to go back to stock first if you're going to try it, back up your efs folder to your computer.
Wait stock as in jfd? And i already have my efs backed up, when i flashed the initial cm7 it backed it up... but if i go stock i can get everything back to normal by just simply doing an odin right? Cuz when i do go back to stock, i plan to just go use simply honey hkney instead...

Odin plus JFD + the right pit file also check the re-partition. Then root and restore your efs.

No, your not "bricked". If you can get into download or recovery your fine, a bootloop just means you screwed something up and didnt flash correctly or correct roim maybe.
Start over, restock using overcome guide/pack, then flash the correct cm9 via recovery for your model/variant.

No way to avoid stock when "only" CWM recovery is "gone"
Hi all,
the last CW-9 nightly update finally did it... boot loop and CWM recovery can not be selected any more (Vol UP and Power). Download mode (Vol DOWN and Power) works, but I would really hate to restock, because my only nandroid backup and Titanium backups are on the internal SD and that would get formatted in the process.
I looked around for other phones and it seems as if they can simply load an image of CWM 6.xxx via ODIN (I tried fastboot but that did not find my device at all).
I could not find any CWM V6 image as a .tar file anywhere. Anyony have a link?
Does anyone know a simple and fast way to get back my nandroid state WITHOUT restock?
Thanks

Still, does anyone know if I can fix the boot image with Odin ... or Heimdal or whatever?

Yesss Sir, I did read. But maybe you sent the wrong link, because your "answer" (not his) points a an open question. Or how do you read his last sentence "does anybody know how I can go about doing this?" -- As to the heimdall solution, I tried that, only to find that it was unable to write to my internal SD. So, i guess the partition scheme got messed up :crying::crying::crying:
Anyway, I gave up (this time) and restocked. Back to my last accessible data backup from May...:crying:
Should somebody still find a "real" answer, please do respond. Even if the answer should be a clear "it can't be done", so be it. Or ask St. CDESAI to please please make "our" version of CW Reboot.
I sent you the right link for those who messed up their kernel .
If your partition gone bad then no wonder it won't work.
Now you have restocked, you can always start from scratch.

[Q] How to root the S4 with no OS?

So I rarely ever root my android devices. Recently bought an S4 AT&T variant (SGH-i337) and felt to locked, so I rooted. Everything was fine, until I mistakingly deleted the system files. This ended up making me lose root as well. So now my phone won't boot, but I can somehow get into TWRP recovery mode. Problem is its not rooted and I can't flash any rom. I don't have a PC easily accessible. So I would like to know if there is a way to root through command line. I am able to upload files onto the phone via adb. Any help would be much appreciated.
Flash super su-busybox in your recovery. Do you have a nandroid you can flash.
Ps, you don't need to be rooted for twrp. If you have a nandroid that's what I'd flash to get your system back.

Just to make sure I understand you, nandroid is the backup I originally made right? Unfortunately I don't have access to my computer from where I am so I can't get it. I am curious as to how twrp didnt get erased after I stupidly deleted the system. So with the nandroid it shouldn't give me the samsung system warning about unauthorized files right? And I appreciate your input by the way!

Nandroid would be the backup you did in twrp. Usually it would be on your sd card. I'm not sure what you have on your computer. Twrp isn't erased because it's on a different partition than your system partition.
In twrp, do you have any files when you click on restore? Those would be the nandriods

Ahh, yes. I have that, except I backed it up on my computer instead because it took up a lot of room. I won't have access to my computer until friday night. I should be able to push that using adb right, because my phone isn't recognized any other way unfortunately. But thanks for the clarification. I will also try super user again. Not that easy. You'll need to get the stock firmware. I use sammobile.com for firmware. You have to register but it's free. You down load a zip file. Use 7-zip to extract the .tar.md5 file from it. That's what you'll use on Odin. Then follow this guide with the file you downloaded http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652398/url]

Glad it worked. Mdb should be fine. See how it works and if you find you're missing anything try the mdl. Mdl is a little newer. Now make sure you root it and freeze the apks that would update it to mf3

The firmware is the operating system. It's like Windows or Linux.
Umm, that doesnt sound right. Im very familiar with unix, and ive never heard anyone interchangeably call linux a firmware. Online they definitely make that distinction. If you're saying that then its more like a part of the OS or connected to it somehow? If not then I really gotta reevaluate what I think I know lmao.

Fix for bootbrick

Haven`t seen anyone else mention this here yet so...
Myself and a few others have been affected by this seemingly unsolveable brick.Continous bootloops,Process system errors, loss of EFS folder so no network or WiFi.
I`ve been following this N900T thread as it has been pretty active http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2467001&page=39
A member bakachu posted a fix for the N900T and as i was getting extremely desperate i tried it.It works for me on my N9005
Go to post #350 for the fix and read onwards for confirmations.
Too put it mildly i`m so delighted to have my Note 3 back in working condition

I had problems with adb as the drivers wouldn`t install properly with all the bootloops.I downloaded the latest TWRP 2.6.3.2 and used the Terminal Command in Advanced settings. I made sure i was in root directory then entered mke2fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 Didn`t use the rest of the code.
Went back to the wipe options and did a factory reset.

Sir to understand correctly i should take following step.
1.Flash stock rom from odin.
2. Flash twrp 2.6.3.2 from odin.
3. Go into twrp and in advanced setting used terminal command and then used mke2fs/dev/block/mmcblk0p12.
4. Again in twrp go in wipe option and do factory reset.
My steps are right? What do you mean by root directory? Plese help sir..

Your steps are correct.
When you open Terminal Command you should check what directory is showing below the input box
just go up a level until you reach root directory. (\) Then press select and input the code.

One of the members of that thread was going to write an easy guide so i will leave it to him.
All credit goes to members of that thread and all thanks should be directed there.
I`m just extremely happy to pass the good news around.
Let me know when your phone is working again.

Hi ttav,
many thanks for your report in XDA,
all done what you have post here,
installed my Rom new with all stuff. Then make a backup from this one. Backup works great, i push all on in TWRP Restore and it works in short time (only 1 minute) include "efs".
Backup folder is "data/media/0/TWRP"
I will try a restore
Many regards

Hold off on any restore. Seems like backup/restore of EFS causes problems.
Edit: From a post by bigbiff
I have never tried to restore that partition so that is why I never experienced that issue. We are storing that partition with dd so I am at a loss why it didn't restore properly. When you are doing the mkfs it's wiping the partition. I will have to investigate further.

ok mate, no restore on TWRP, but backup seems to be good.
Just a heads up and probably should have mentioned this earlier
TWRP 2.6.3.2 is not for the N9005. I used it as a tool to get into Terminal Commander so i could input the code that fixed my problem.
As soon as possible i flashed CMW and used that for flashing.
No doubt TWRP will become an extremely useful tool for us but for the moment just hold fire.

At the moment i`m not sure but i guess there will be an app soon.
But for now running the same code restores your IMIE so not going to loose any sleep about it for the moment.
Just bumping this up to add that my device has been working great for 24 hours with this fix.
Confirming that this worked for me as welllll .woohooooooooo

(Help) Lost imei after flashing stock root d801

I have a t-mobile g2 d801, I rooted then backed up my efs with freegee then installed nrg ROM. I decided to see if the restore efs would work so I used freegee to restore it. Then I flashed the latest stock rooted ROM and now I'm getting a reboot about 30 seconds after the Os boots a date my imei is gone. Please help

I can't give you specific help to fix this, but, I can advise that you make an extra backup of your EFS. Copy it off of your phone if possible. If not, just copy it to a different partition on your phone, so you have more than 1 copy in more than 1 place.
If you attempt to return to stock with T-Mobile flashing tool all the data on your phone will be erased. So moving a copy of the EFS backup off your phone is the first thing you want to do. If you can use ADB with the phone you can get a copy of it off your phone.
After that, I'd wait for someone with specific knowledge of this problem to assist you in fixing it. Assuming the backup of your EFS file is good, you will be able to fix your phone.

I'm in the same boat. I have my efs1 and efs2 img files, but no idea what to do with them. Any help is sincerely appreciated.

EDIT: Autoprime listed this method for restoring efs
autoprime said:
If flashable zip wasn't created or to manually restore efs img files run the following commands using adb shell while in recovery:
dd if=/sdcard/EFS_Backup/efs1.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/modemst1
dd if=/sdcard/EFS_Backup/efs2.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/modemst2

I tried that, but still have "0" as my imei. Perhaps this method could work for someone else in this thread?
freegee doesnt work, then you probably lost root
also try when wifi on
contact freegee maker with log. you may have found a bug.
try rooting again
