[Q] root through wifi - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any way to root my nexus 7 through WiFi? I am asking because my tablet's USB port is broken. My tablet's boot loader is already unlocked. Thanks in advance.

[Q] Before a root questions

Hi everyone,
I have recently bought myself a Nexus 7 3g(not opened yet) and i want to know what i need to know about before i root it (using Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit v1.6.2). I know to check the usual thing like making sure everything works. But when i root do i need to know such as know the baseband version/ril version (matching pair)? If there is any issues using this method of rooting with recovery installed?
Or is it as easy as Unlock>Root>(Custom Recovery box checked) and to store back to factory default Flash Stock+Unroot>OEM Lock
I saw this in teh forum "When I drop to the command prompt in TWRP, it says "insufficient space" or something similar, and is trying to backup to the /sdcard/media/TWRP directory instead of to the PC. I have an 8GB model w/ about 6GB in use." Is this still an issue? should i be concerned?
Should i grab a copy of this? 4.2.1 (JOP40D) - md5: e5d22e0791ab2f5d470bba77fbd6771d - size: 277.7MB. Should this be matching to mine?
Many Thanks!!!
***Another question is, how to i tell which one i got? a Nakasig or Tilapia
I wouldn't use a kit to root. Its easy to do manually just follow this thread

Thanks for the above post but will any one be able to answer my other questions? Like the difference between Nakasig and Tilapia? Are they the same? I want to install openrecovery-twrp-2.3.3.0-tilapia.img but what happens if my device is the Nakasig model? I havent opened my device yet since i'm waiting for my screen protector.
I want to root root this device but with limited knowledge i'm worried i might brick it.
Its real easy. Its mostly an automated process. Follow the on screen directions. Make sure u have USB debugging checked on in developer settings. Click on the about>build a bunch of times if your developer tab isn't open. YouTube this if needed. Don't know about the other questions

[Q] New to rooting, nexus 10

Hi, I just recently bought a Nexus 10, and this is my first android device so I am new to everything. I am interested in rooting my device, and would like some information about it. How do I install this "CyanogenMod" I keep hearing about? I used the Nexus Root Toolkit to root my device already, do I need to do anything else? Is there some stuff you recommend doing now that I am rooted? Help would be appreciated, thanks!

Well, its always good to see new users interested in rooting. To be honest rooting your device really opens up the world of android and the capabilities that people love about android. So you've already used the toolkit to root? And you've got CWM or TWRP installed?

Many would suggest that you get to know how the stock Android device works and behaves. You want to get acquainted with the true Android flavor before you get in to the good stuff.
I would say play around and enjoy your Nexus 10 how Google intended (Especially if this is your first Android!), and if you aren't 100% satisfied go ahead and root it.
Regardless, if you are intent on rooting you should check out the sticky in the Nexus 10 General section which has all the info laid out for you on how to root (and do many other things!) here:

[Q] USB dongle modem in Nexus 7 without rooting

I have read posts related to attaching pendrive in nexus 7 w/o root. I have also read posts related to running usb dongle modem in nexus 7 with root by PPT Widget. Wanna know any way i can run any usb dongle modem in nexus 7 without rooting?
Thank You.
First, a question....
Is there any reason to not root?
Just wondering.
And to answer your question, I think it may not be possible, because some system files may have to be modified to install drivers/required files.
My opinion, feel free to prove me wrong.
Peace,

The white from the light of the computer makes it hard to follow in some spots, also a lot of ppl prob don't know how to upgrade the Google USB drivers (I know simple but could not so adv ppl could get lost etc).
Overall good videos, my N7(2013) thanks you
I notice people always say to turn usb debugging on but I've done it both my Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 and never turned debugging on for either one and it still works the same.
Won't get my new N7 until September (uk). Just would like to say thanks for the great vids.

Thanks for the vids!
just bought the old N7 32gb for just under $200 last week. Decided that I don't need that much space and would rather have the better hardware so I'm returning the first gen and getting the latest 16gb version! :good:
Not sure if I missed it, but it should be noted that unlocking the bootloader wipes ALL your data!
Has anyone tried this using Clockwork instead of TWRP? Not a big fan of TWRP
EDIT: Never mind found my answer
Thanks for the great vids!
Please delete.
ugh i wanna root/unlock, but i finally set it up how i like it....now i have to wipe it lol so lazy.
That's why you root and unlock right out of the box.

Exactly! As soon as UPS drops it off on Friday night, it is getting unlocked ASAP!
If I just bought a nexus 7 from best buy today, do I have the 2013 version? I assume I do? Also, probably dumb question, but I assume 2013 nexus won't work with nexus 7 roms/kernels?

If you're serious about these questions then yes, it's the new one. You probably should have done your homework before even buying it if you had to ask after you bought it. Best Buy never even carried last years model.
No.. Don't use anything from the original N7 unless you want a nice heavy paper weight.
My suggestion would be to start reading everything on the 2013 model very carefully in these forums before you attempt to flash anything.
I'm not trying to be rude, but the above are how people get in messes. Especially if they have to ask the community what they bought.

Lol I look like an absolute fool. When I bought it I didn't think there was a new one, but after some research, I figured out that I obviously have it haha
I have read through all of the threads regarding root and will root it later tonight. My previous comment made me look like a complete noob, but I assure you I have rooted phones for years and understand the goings on. I was just confused at the time because as I said I didn't know there was a new model, I thought it was a firmware update or something.
I can't wait to see this attract devs that can bring amazing kernels and roms
No No Kernel Optimized Galaxy S3
you mention "fastboot.exe" in the video, but where do we get that? I keep getting "ADB not recognized as a command" when I type the command in the window.
Never mind... I figured it out... I wasn't navigating to the platform-tools folder before opening the command window. I'm now unlocked & rooted

MAxWest Tab 106...Questions

Hi guys got this tablet for basically free. It seems to be a good unit. Android 4.2.2 nice hardware etc. It surprisingly has root access. I enabled the developer options and there was a setting to enable super user...I checked it with root checker app and it verified this. The amazing thing is I plug it into the laptop. and with the usb debugging enabled it ask for the Media option for transferring files...and then it has an install driver option to get the correct drivers in Windows 7. All this being said...I seem to have had better luck then most with these Chinese tablets. It has inputs for about everything one could think of....Is it a samsung or nexus NO. But there might actually be something to work with on this one.
Is it possible to install a custom rom?
Is it possible to flash a custom recovery?
Is 4.3 or 4.4 a possibility.
I know that I can sideload and get to odin with it. Any help ideas or thoughts accepted.
