Recently bought my New Google Nexus 7 (2013) from Bestbuy this past Saturday. and I've loved it, and will keep on loving it. but I noticed one small, lonesome, scared, dead pixel around the left hand corner. Normally this wouldn't bother me, but considering I'm still in the 14 day warranty I was wondering should I honestly waste my time, get perhaps a new unit and maybe the new unit could be worse than the one i currently own?
There's absolutley nothing wrong with the current unit I own, besides the Dead Pixel. and was curious if anyone else had the same issue? would you suggest returning it, and actually get what I truly want. or should i just forget about it. I mean it's pretty hard to see, but just knowing that it's that is just killing me. I have OCD and this is not helping it :|
All comments are welcomed.
Also, does anyone else notice a rattle noise coming from the rear, back camera when you tap on it? not to worried about it. but just wondering if it's something TOO worry about.
Well, I would say bring it back to Best Buy, especially since you are still in the return period. That's what it's for! And if the new one is worse than that one, you can return it too!
I stayed in the parking lot of best buy playing with mine until I was satisfied. I exchanged one within an hour of using it. My second one was perfect! No light bleed or any issues!

I think im just going to return mine and see where it takes me from there, im spending $280.00 might as well get something I'm going to love forever. or at least until the battery kapoots.
Mine has a stuck pixel at a corner, not noticed unless looking closely

I've picked up my 32Gb on saturday and haven't looked back to the 16gb. from what I've heard it gets full quick, and when i first looked at my total storage it said I had 25 Gigs left, so I can only imagine what 16Gb had left.
Got mine via Amazon and it had 4 dead pixels, sent it back and my second one is perfect, no dead pixels.
If it had been one dead pixel, I'd probably still send it back for replacement. So I say get a replacement.
I got a dead pixel too
Going to staples tomorrow and exchange it. I got it from staples online.
Can someone recommend the best app for testing pixels, light bleed, touch sensitivity, etc? I remember using them on my 1st gen N7 but I can't remember which ones.

i usually turn brightness all the way up, go into a dark room, google deal pixel test and use any
to check for light bleed use dark black ground and check around edged... rotate other colors to check for dead pixels.. pixels are tiny on this 1080p 7" screen
for multi touch look up multi touch tester on googple play and download the app

How is ASUS warranty for nexus 7 bought from amazon US, shipped to Australia?
If i get any problems, i'll probably just live it i guess, the price you pay for being an early adopter
the problem is that you may return this and then get one with 5 dead pixels and dust under the screen. it may take you 6 exchanges and a headache before you're happy. there's no quality control on these at all so you really have to decide. I have dust under mine and a tiny dead pixel on my 2nd one.. returned the first for a dead pixel. I'm keeping the second.. idc anymore.

I got the last one from Gamestop day before yesterday and found a dead pixel about an inch over the back button. Taking it back as soon as they get some more in stock.

Mine has a dead pixel and Like others said, it's kind of hard to notice as its only 1 and it's not really worth it for me to keep going back and returning it as another one may have bigger problems, it's up to you as it obviously shoyldnt have one so you definitely have a right to get a new one so if you don't mind definitely get a new one, I'm leaving to go back to England tomorrow so don't have the time/patience to get a new one, will probably get it repaired a few months down the line

Well.... found a small dust speck that wouldn't move. I have a dead pixel.
Setup an exchange?
Depends on how much it bugs you, I guess. The 2nd I got (first one had light bleed) has a dead pixel way up in the upper left corner. Never even noticed it until I ran one of those screen test apps. I wish it was perfect, but not worth the hassle to exchange again.

Hey.... hopefully Newegg will not give me to much of an hassle. Going to setup an exchange Monday.
I also had a dead pixel.... in the center of the screen. I exhanged it with Samsung... took about 2 weeks.
Had a dead pixel on mine and exchanged it with Best Buy.
I would not do it.. I may have bad luck but I exchanged mine and the second one was worse

So I picked up my Nexus 7 from GameStop, and I can't express how happy I am about this purchase! I always see everyone complaining about dead pixels, lifted screens, etc. Are there other people out there just as happy as me? I don't see anything wrong with the hardware, and 4.1.1 runs beautifully, couldn't be happier!

It's hard to say, since mine hasn't arrived yet. I'm in Aus, so that's expected.
Most of what I've heard is very positive, though.
I'm happy love it at this price!

Its fair to say that reading XDA around the launch of a new bit of hardware you've bought will make you paranoid as hell.
A lot here sit at home with their forensic kits waitng for their new equipment to arrive then put the thing through an hours inspection at least as soon as they get it. They'll have all the weird test patterns for the screen that XDA have produced along with microscopes and measuring calipers.
In other words, if you want to feel good about your new toy, probably best not to come here for a bit.... It can be the OCD centre of the internet at times.
I might be when mine arrives next month if it is defect-free
I recieved mine in Melbourne, AUS yesterday with the screen completely stuffed - Washed out, burn-in and uneven backlighting!
So no, I am not particularly happy, but if mine was good then I would be VERY happy.

I agree 100%, everyone waiting on their 7 should avoid these forums for a minute... when I was on my way to pick mine up, I was paranoid as hell, couldn't stop thinking about dead pixels, or something.. and I usually have horrible luck when I buy retail products, I always get the defects. I had to return mine due to faults, but I'm still very happy with it! Faults happen, esp on new runs, and historically I've been very lucky with my tech. I'm not happy I have to wait to play with it again, but that'll be outweighed by the replacement arriving fault free. Enjoy yours!

It's a $200 device so you can't expect the screen quality to be like a Pioneer Kuro.... Its a decent screen for the money, but yeah its not HD S+ AMOLED. Its not $800 either.

I admit if there were a few things that were native to the N7 I'd be ALOT happier .( support for flash- I know this is Adobe's main fault, a sd slot , a rear high quality camera, Gorilla Glass instead of CorningĀ® Fit Glass , plastic bezel replaced with a metal one, ) But hey what can you expect with a price just above the $200.00 mark ?
Overall I'm happy so far.
-I'm having some issues with the touch pad/lag in games but I'm now blaming that on immature Tegra drivers .Hoping an update fixes this soon.

Yes your right, SD card is a big one. For the camera, I have an upgrade in march (Verizon) and I plan on getting the best android phone I could get my hands on. But I have the 16gig so I haven't ran into an issue with memory yet. Also gorilla glass would have been lovely, and the metal over plastic of course. But being my first tablet, for only 250$, I could definitely overlook some of these faults!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
I'm not particularly happy. Mine arrived dead, and remained dead even after being left on charge overnight. Reading through these forums, this is the list of faults I've seen.
- Dead on arrival
- Dead after a few hours use
- Light bleeding down side of the screen
- Screen/colour washout
- Yellow tints on the screen
- Image retention lasting minutes
- Dead pixels
- Screen glass bulging
- Creaking screens
- Erratic touch screen / dead zones
- One legged type sound from speakers
- Microphone dead on arrival or failing within days
- Endless NFC force closes on first boot
- Lag
However, I do agree with kitch9's sentiment. I'm guessing only people with faults are posting and I'm hoping there's plenty of perfect devices out there somewhere! It is a human trait to tell more people if you receive bad service, rather than good.
Mines is running perfect and defect free. Always seem like no matter the product, there's always a percentage that has issues or people that has gripes with it. Don't let those mess up your experience with your device. Its a great deal and it performs better than most high end tablets/phones out right now. Its a great deal for the power you get. Very happy to own one.
I'm happy my I/O unit is perfect
Well sort of ie: random crashing (NFC mostly, menu buttons crashed once) flickering, top bar freezing, dead pixels (3 of them), speaker volume sucks. Urgh the glass on this sucks! I have micro scratches already! My 4S and iPad combine don't have as many!
But its all cherry other wise

Picked mine up from Gamestop and it had no faults. I was the only one in my town to pre-order the thing which is surprising. Its because my little Nexy didnt have to share a box with others so he slept unharmed while he was on the plane
Mine is perfect. No lag, no light bleeding that I can see when using, audio works, no screen lifted, battery life is great (first charge last night, and only because I forgot to turn off Dice so it kept the tablet on, doh!).
I love mine. Got a nicely built one , just like my galaxy nexus was. Although we shouldn't be guessing and hoping for products that we are paying for..

There only one way to find out if you are going to get a broken unit. Reading those threads will make you paranoid, people don't make threads about their nexus 7 with no defects.
I think maybe a 20% chance you get a defective tablet.
Without knowing how may units were sold and how many defective units there were no one can answer this accurately. Some things to keep in mind.
1. This forum is full of people that are connoisseurs of electronic devices.
2. The people that are happy with their devices do not complain.
As a sample data point. I know of 7 people that bought the nexus 7. 6 from the playstore and one from Game Stop. None of them have defects. So I would guess the odds are low that you will get a defective device. But with there is an inherent margin of defects in any production run.
People tend to ***** more when something doesn't work than when something does. Don't worry about it. Think of all of us happy owners.

My 8GB unit got here on 8/1 and right off the bat I noticed a light leak all along the left hand side of the screen (portrait), as well as slight screen raise along the left bezel. Still deciding whether to RMA or keep it. 12 days left.
Edit: I hadn't noticed the flicker because I keep it at full brightness. The second I lowered it to about 50%, it started flickering when loading web pages and in a few other spots.
Got mine from the Google play store today and mine is perfect. Give or take a few days to really see how it holds up. Colors look fine, no light leaks, dead pixels or screen displacement. My cousin also ordered his around the same time I did and his is also perfectly fine. Perhaps Google corrected some of the issues when they restocked the 16gbs this past week?

1 - Screen bleed (C60)
2 - Screen lift (C70)
3 - Died/stopped charging (C80)
4 - Screen flicker at low brightness (C90)
Do ASUS do any QC before sending these things out? I love the device (number 3 was great for 6 weeks until it died) but concerned about whether the replacement will break. Are others having similar problems or am I just really unlucky? Getting tempted to cut my losses and get a refund.

Sample testing, probably. They'll pull a device every x number of devices produced and run it through some tests.
It does seem like Asus is letting the QC be done by the end user after the device has left the factory.

I think they all have the low backlight flicker issue however if you disable Prism it stops. This means it's software not hardware and could be addressed by Google someday.

I'll disagree only because people have suggested the same thing to me. I'm waiting for my 3rd device to ship. My first one has a bright spot you see in the middle whenever the phone is held from an angle, like a cluster of stuck pixels. The second had a bad yellow tint and black dust under the screen.
In the past 2 years I've bought 2 Lenovo laptops, an Asus Zenbook, a PSVita, an iPod Touch, a Samsung TV, Nexus One/S/Galaxy, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S3, a Xoom and a Galaxy Tab 10.1.
At NO point have I had to return or exchange a single one of these devices.
I otherwise love the device, but I have no doubt that corners were cut in the manufacturing process to attain the low price.
You are lucky your rma is shipping. This is my first rma with the n4 and they're not even shipping it to me. It's been almost 2 weeks too.
I ordered 4 originally (not for selling, for friends). Mine was the only one with problem (overheating, screen flicker, bad MicroUSB port). The RMA'd device was awesome in every way, but had no functioning Magnometer (so no orientation sensing or compass functionality). Still waiting for the second RMA to get here. Other than that, amazing phone.
My first device had the yellow spot syndrome so I RMA'ed it. Was disappointed to find the replacement had a yellow tint on the display. Was planning on RMAing that too until I found out it could be fixed with software. So I'm now happy with my 2nd n4.

Flashing the Jellytime kernel did it for me. There's also the Nexus 4 Display control that allows you to adjust it without changing kernels (I myself haven't used this but it looks promising).
I'm not sure if either would work if you have a stripe down the side, but it's worth a shot.

Thanks for the suggestions! Did you flash the jellytime kernel itself in the ROM thread, or did you flash the whole ROM along with the kernel? I don't know if there is a difference between the two besides the lack of OC. The kernel didn't fix the issues with me :c I might try the display control.

RMA's are now back ordered as well. Mine just changed to pre-ordered, and the CSR says they are now completely out of devices. I'm gonna say, crap like this contributes, as well as people that fry their phone OCing. OP absolutely has the right to a high quality device. But given the obvious supply issues Google has been having, I don't think it would have hurt to just deal with it for a couple weeks, none of those are deadline issues, and you have a full year to RMA for a manufacturer defect. I have a 3/4 inch tall strip across the center of my screen with no touch response, damn near cripples the device's usability.
Oh well, I guess that just means I get a phone from the third batch, that much less likely to have defects I hope. Or maybe I'll get the OP's refurb'd 1st device, cause I'm not that damned picky.
Again, OP does have the right to a high quality device, but now this kinda crap is screwing over user's with deadline issues.
my RMA was very fast (australia) shipped within 24hours of calling to setup the RMA
My phones earpiece cut out randomly so often i couldn't hear people when they called. the new one is perfect tho.
My old phone rattled and buzzed real loud and the replacement fixed that but it has a yellow tinted screen with clear spots.
