Warranty Replacement arrives with MF3 loaded!!! - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hi all,
Over the past week I have been struggling with an inadvertent partial upgrade from MDL -> MF3 (The saga is in several other threads).
It left my phone soft bricked with only Odin mode avaliable. Samsung has not and apparently will not make the MF3 update available via kies.
In the end I made a warranty claim which AT&T honored with no argument or resistance.
The new phone (refurbished) arrived today.
It came with MF3 loaded.
Be aware that they are shipping phones already updated.
I do not know if this is true of the fresh (new) stock or only part of the refurb process...
Keep this in mind when making a warranty claim.
Good luck.

It's really sad to hear this, but thank you for sharing this with everyone. Very useful information when people are considering Warranty replacements right now.
Also, don't lose all hope, because the bounties are increasing, and Verizon apparently just got root again with their latest update. :fingers-crossed:

I have absoulute faith that a hole will be found.
My experience as a developer (started with a TRS-80 model 1 with 4k ram) has taught me that all programs have bugs/holes.
An old proverb taught me by a professor when I declared a program perfect on a PDP-11, written in Oregon Pascal "All programs have at least one bug and can be reduced by one instruction and therefore can be reduced to one instruction that does not work." :-O

because thats what you get as a warranty replacement. a phone only, no back cover or battery. i'm assuming that's what the OP meant when he referenced "refurb"

It was explicitly stated by att rep.
Other than that I can not say.
Is there an indication on the phone label?

You can unroot by following the method in qbking77's video but remember it will not change your modem. If you have the EC05 modem you are good. If you have a leaked GB modem and wish to go to Sprint hope for a lazy tech that won't check your baseband.

Really, you can speak for all of sprint people?
I had to go through Asurion and pay $100 because they wouldn't work with my rooted phone when it had a physical defect un-related to any software issue.
I'll be more than happy to work with you to get my $100 back, other than that don't tell people it's ok.
What was the issue you might ask? My phone stopped communicating with any computer, same as OP. They blamed it on me flashing/rooting and therefore wouldn't work with it.

You must mean after Sprint makes them pay the $100 deductible. We were talking about warranty repairs which of course are considered void on a rooted phone.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
It worked, thanks for the video, getting a new phone in a few days.
I've said this several times, so please take it to heart.
As service and repair technicians, our M&P (methods and procedures) states that rooted and modified phones DO NOT void any sort of warranty. This was just recently changed several months ago. It wast publicly announced for obvious reasons. Manufacturer warranty, I can't speak for that. But if you pay for TEP, being rooted DOES NOT void your TEP extended warranty.
Any sprint rep or tech who tells you otherwise and refers you to asurion is WRONG or MISINFORMED or LAZY. Please tell them and their manager to refer to their phone triage M&P.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
Actually, a point of clarification, our M&P never explicitly states anything regarding warranty, rather they hide that fact in verbage.
It states how to troubleshoot and repair a rooted device, and what "tier" it falls into (a quick fix/a free fix if you have TEP or 35 if you dont/a fix that needs claimed with asurion if you have TEP or screwed if you don't). Rooted devices (so long as there's no liquidd damage or accidental damage) fall into tier 2, which means a free fix at the S&R location if you have TEP or $35 if you don't.
Sooo...put 2 and 2 together..this means (implicitly) that root is does not void the terms of your extended warranty through TEP.

Thank you for that Squishy...it seems a lot of techs didn't get the memo and try to get that $100 deductible. I am sure this info you provided will help a lot of people stuck rooted.

No problem
Well it's to keep their exchange rate down, I imagine. That bit of info doesn't come without forewarning, however. Sprint still strongly discourages it.
For instance, latest rumor I heard here is that if you own a 3D and go through HTC's official unlock method, your ESN is flagged in the system for things regarding free tethering and the like. So there is still risk assumed by rooting.

[Q] Question about Asurion

Has anyone had to return a phone to Asurion that was rooted and they not accept it? Glass was OK but inside cracked and would not light up so could not unroot before sending. Did they try to charge more than the deductible after receiving the phone?
Thanks
Did you try what I told you to do? Hook up the mhl cable to a monitor so you could see the phone screen to triangle away and unroot. I guess not.

Thanks but you had to have told that to someone else. I should have thought of that. I don't know if they will. I just have not heard anything from them so far. It should make no difference to them. It being rooted has no bearing on the problem.
I've sent a lot of phones in for various reasons (clumsy) that were rooted and I have not encountered a problem.

Just make sure when you get it doesn't have the mf3 firmware and don't let the sales person update it for you. If they do don't accept it. When you get it, take the SIM out and root and disable the auto update apps, see other threads for those, or flash a custom Rom

But once they bring the phone out to you and break the seal, isn't it yours no matter what? What can I say to decline the phone if it has the update on it without acting fishy?
What are the odds the update will already be on it? How long ago did it come out?

There's a 30 day remorse period to return a phone with AT&T for any reason. So I wouldn't worry about that.
I'm in the same position. My plan is to ask them to just give me one in the box and not let them touch it til I get home.

Well here's the thing... I actually signed up with AT&T yesterday. My gf got the S4 and I got the One. I kinda like the S4 better.
So I'm already gonna have to pay a restocking fee. If the S4 has the update, can I even go back to the One? Is it unlimited exchanges as long as you pay the restocking fee?

On the box of the phone it will have the software version printed near the serial number and IMEI on a sticker. Ask the salesperson if you can just check the software version first. Won't even have to open the box, and if you get a cool salesperson you can ask them to specifically look for a phone with the exploitable firmware version.

I'm pretty sure you can exchange all you want.
Also, there's no "acting fishy." You're allowed to root and mod your phone. It voids your warranty, but the sales reps in the store are not going to narc you out on your warranty anyway. I've had discussions with the reps in the store about mods, and modding concerns and it's fine to just tell them that's what you're looking for.
Also, in my experience, AT&T has had no problem servicing and replacing modded phones. They don't seem to care in practice.
Thanks a ton guys! I wasn't thinking, so I just checked the box of my gf's S4 and it's the MDL firmware! She got the red one though, so maybe that stock isn't turning over as fast.
I might get the red one just to be safe haha! I will put a case over it anyway. If she just got hers yesterday and it had MDL, I'm guessing mine would too. I'm going to the same store.
Thanks a ton guys for the fast responses!

You should be good just make sure the baseband ends in MDL and not md3. The sales person shouldn't have an issue with it. Let us know how it goes

I agree with this if you are buying it from a brick and mortar store the sales people wont have a problem with you checking out the phones before purchasing
i too was concerned about the update so i got one (for my daughter) from BestBuy. i asked them to fire it up to make sure it was working and confirm it was MDL before i left the store. first thing i did was remove the sim card, turn off wifi, root it, install TWRP and flashed a rooted MF3 version.
I was only able to return a phone for a different phone once. Maybe other stores allow it but I was only able to once.
Hey guys, here is the update....it worked out great!! When I went into the store, I told the guy that I was torn between the red and white one since my girlfriend got the red one. Even though I knew that I wanted the white. So he said he wasn't even sure they had the red in stock since it's not as popular as the other colors. He went into the back to check.
He came out with a red and white one and put them on the counter and started opening them up to show them to me. I casually looked at each box and they were both MDL! So I told him that I was in a rush and would put the sim in and do all the setup myself. He was cool with it and I left.
As I type this, I already rooted it and am about to flash a ROM. I'm in good shape and on my way! Thanks guys! :good:

I picked up a red one two days ago.
The sales rep told may that all the reds they had in stock were from an older shipment, so they haven't been updated.
Color was not an issue for me since I'm going to wrap the thing in a case anyway.
Sure enough... I now have an MDL GS4 already rooted, TWRP and unlocked.
Now to decide what rom to flash first.

do you have a usb jig? that might boot it into download mode, allowing you to flash MDL via odin.
also, they may not exchange the device if they detect it has been modified.
If it doesn't turn on, they won't see anything that would say it has been modified.

i'm sure this plays a part in carrier's loving opinions on rooting.
i've seen bricked devices shipped to carrier repair centers and customers later billed for the no-longer-warrantied (unofficial/modified) equipment.

Actually they can.
They'll send it back to Samsung who will inspect the returned phone under an RMA from AT&T. Samsung will know right away if it was modified when they run the diagnostic, since they will attempt to refurbish it and resell it.

That's not entirely true. I have purposely hard bricked quite a few devices to see if they could figure it out. Not once have I received anything from Samsung or AT&T stating that the found something or were denying my warranty because they found something. There is nothing that they have that can definitively prove that a user broke their phone if it does not turn on, simply because they cannot pinpoint exactly what made the device fail. They will not give any problems if the OP says that he was doing a software update and the battery died before it finished. I'm not saying it is right. I did it for testing purposes and a theory. Not once have I experienced any repercussions. I might add that I have done it at least a dozen times. So OP would be in he clear.

I went to an AT&T store a few days ago to get a secure element for free (SIM) and received a text survey the next day. I gave the employee a 10 but said I wouldnt recommend at&t to a friend, and everything else I gave low low reviews. They called me several hours later and I let them know why... I am sure it doesnt mean much... but at least they know I think they suck!
The people on the phone tried to help... but didn't really know how to go about getting someone to talk to me about bootloaders... they even recommended me checking out XDA to unlock it... LOL awesome.
I told them that I am perfectly fine with voiding my warranty... so can I please get this flashed to an international version... no idea how to answer something like that... oh well...

Yeah right. I'm sure this thread will be locked. I knew what I was getting when I bought it. I really didn't care as long as I could root.
If flashing and ROMing is that important, get a different phone. The T-Mobile version of the Note 3 is unlocked and will work on AT&T. I prefer AT&T because I get 4G/LTE where I live and in the building where I work.
Very happy with my Note 3 rooted and using Xposed, Wanam, etc. No need for a custom ROM. At least for me anyways.
AT&T has analytics on social media and Web information they collect on what is being said about them. Most large companies do and thought this might get some attention.
