Wipe all data

Simple question, I have pictures videos and back ups that don't want deleted when I do a factory reset, do I need to back it up on my PC or????

Depends on what you are talking about if you mean while in a custom recovery then no you don't but if you are unlocking your boot loader or you are using a stock in rooted ROM and are just pressing factory reset from settings then yes you should back up

I would actually LIKE to delete everything when I install a new rom. I have used all the wipe data setting i could find in recovery and I always end up with a bunch of stuff left from the previous rom. Downloads etc.
Is there something I am missing?

Are you talking about the factory reset within Jelly Bean? If so, then that wipes everything as far as I know.

Most (all?) custom recoveries should have some type of option to format sdcard.

In CWM, the wipe data/factory reset option will *not* wipe your virtual sdcard.
You can do a wipe in recovery, and the /sdcard partition will remain intact. I was worried about this before unlocking my bootloader too
However when you unlock your bootloader *all* of your user data will be wiped from your tablet
This includes your apps, setup, homescreens, sdcard, photos. It will be like having a brand new tablet
The downloads folder is on your sdcard. You may be able to edit the updater script or something to wipe the virtual sdcard directory when you flash a rom

I did wonder why there was always stuff left over. I guess in some ways its handy. It just feels like doing an in place upgrade of windows rather than a clean install when theres old data still there.

You also cannot have the $25 credit twice, as in if you bought 2 N7's using the same google account
I had 2 because one was faulty and I only got 1 gift card
Wiping your tablet will not lose your $25 though, thats stored on your google account. You ca use it with any android device hooked up to the same google account.

Or do you just do regular wipe, install then format sd?

Yes, just do the regular wipes first, install the ROM, and then format the sdcard.

They both do pretty much the same thing. Personally, I like TWRP better. CWM seems to be more popular, though. The main thing I like about TWRP is the USB OTG functions, but besides that, CWM works just as well.

Whichever one YOU prefer.

TWRP may be easier simply due to it being touch based unlike CWM which navigates menus with the volume rocker. But as far as functionality, they're essentially the same.

Uhm.... You do realize that there is a touch version of CWM too, right? I guess you didn't. Now you do!

I have used both and twrp is faster and gets better support in my opinion. Twrp works great and when there is a issue with a release it is quickly fixed.

Most important feature of TWRP for me: backup files on OTG-USB!
-> leave more space of /data partition
-> have a 'really' backup ...

I use otg-usb but never saved my back ups to it unless I move it manually how do you get twrp to do it changing the dir path?

There is an option: you can choose to write the backup to internal or external (only if you have connected an USB-stick by OTG).

I switched recently from CWM to TWRP. I hate this stupid blobs in CWM. These are useful for people who backup their device every day. Not for people who want to backup before rom-upgrade.
Especially for the Nexus 7, which has only MTP. Backup of CWM blob-images with MTP? Horror!

OTG USB is not working in TWRP...
ANY SOLUTIONS? I have the latest installed... With jb 4.2 , and it doesn't let me choose external SD USB otg ..
I have otg formated in NTFS , does it have to be in FAT or ExtFat?

Was a fan of CWM until they introduced blobs, makes backing up nandroid images to PC an absolute pain over wi-fi with millions of small files, space isn't freed up from deleting one of the nandroid backups either. TWRP has been excellent so far.

OTG USB has to be Fat or ExFat? Because my OTG USB is formatted in NTFS and it is not working...

As far as I know the format has to be fat/vfat. I was using an ext4 formatted sdcard first and it was neither working with stickmount nor in TWRP. After reformatting to vfat it's working like a charm ...

I switched from CWM to TWRP because I cannot install my payed CWM Touch out of the Rom Manager App after replacing my grouper with a replacement device, it says I have to pay another time (actually I bought it twice, on my Crespo and my Grouper, such as Rom Manager Premium). I do not support such business methods.

Its not tied to your Google account? I hope other apps are not like that. I will get a 32g to replace the 16g OK have and don't want to repay for all apps. I never thought about it till now.

Well, the first time I bought CWM-Touch (on my Crespo) I bought it via Play Store. When I got my first Nexus 7, I had to pay another time, and I grudgingly paid again, this time via PayPal, and I got a message that it would be linked to my gmail-account... Apparently, it wasn't... Unfortunatly, I can't say something to other In-App-purchases.

Koush has stated many times over on G+, that it is a separate purchase per device. An RMA/replacement device, is a new device in the eyes of the app.
You do NOT need to flash touch recovery from the app though, as it is free from his website if you flash via fastboot.
The purchase of touch recovery is NOT indicative of 99.9% of all purchases done through the play store. you keep your play store apps forever tied to your GMAIL account. CWM touch is a completely different thing altogether.

Thanks, I didn't know he explained that on G+.
Maybe he should point it out inside the App before the purchase. I sent him a mail and asked if it is correct that I have to pay another time after I got my replacement device and restored my old device-ID via TitaniumBackup, but I got no answer.
But after some testing, I like TWRP with GooManager a lot more than CWM.

[Q] Nexus 4 model, about storage capacity

Hi, how will I be able to know which variant (8gb or 16 gb) my nexus 4 is?
Before rooting, I think my total storage capacity is 12gb+ (I actually can't remember definitely).
Then I unlocked the bootloader and tried to flash, I was stuck in the X logo, I restarted, then I was stuck in the google logo (unlocked bootloader at this point.) I had backed up my apps and sdcard via adb.
I was stuck, so I downloaded a factory image and reflashed my device. Then I rooted it. I was done. SU installed, and it was rooted. I then reinstalled my app settings via adb again, but not the sdcard.
after sometime, putting music, movies and apps, I noticed that my device only had a total of 5.66GB.
I bought it 2nd hand, BTW.
So what happened? Now, I just want to confirm really how much storage I have so I can get back my money if this was indeed an 8gb version instead of 16gb. Any ideas?

All of the media you put onto your Nexus 4 takes up room. How many movies did you put? How many songs? If you feel that there is something wrong with the amount if storage available, then you can try formatting your SD.
I also remember that there's a bug on 16GB models to only show 8GB.

there is a similar issue that occurs with the nexus 7. i remember it was talked about before in some threads. after flashing the images, did you do a factory reset or clear data in recovery? this seems to have the issue fixed. some units show up as 8gb after a reflash however a reset thru settings or clear data fixes this.

thank you guys... I'm relieved that it is a bug, I hope it is a bug in my case... One question though, do you suggest back up with adb + sdcard or titanium? my previous settings were not backed up using adb cmd (I'm not sure though, since I didn't push back the sd backup)

You can even make a nandroid backup and apply it after the storage fix. Its in the OP of the thread I linked.

16GB phone suddenly only recognizes 8GB??

I accidentally wiped my internal storage and ROM completely from my device.
It was empty. I had to flash images available on the developer site. After managing to transfer files back onto my phone I flashed cm10.1 again.
Now I notice I have only 8GB storage.
Anyone else experience such an issue?

In stock recovery you have to wipe cache and dalvik, if that doesn't fix it do a factory rest to fix it. It may erase even your SD Card so back it up on cloud or pc first to be safe

If you were not lazy or stressed of what happened you could have always referred to our good friend Google. And it took me exactly I second to find the right answer for you. Also I've had the same issue when rooting and installing stock 4.2.2 but it took me also few second to repair the problem. So next time dont be shy and use search or Google

Help.confuse? 8gb or 16gb

My friend gave me his nexus 4 and never told me that the fone was rooted and its capacity..so now im confused, i check the custom recovery installed by pressing power+vol down and some sort of lying android logo shows and ask me what to do and at the bottom of the screen shows 'mako' thing..so now i check the unit how much memory does this phone has after restoring it thru recovery mode..i wipe cache aswell..so now i go straight to the settings and check it but it only shows 5.67gb total internl storage and 2.65gb free of space which is not normal to atleast 8gb nexus 4 has around 6gb less than 7gb internal and 5gb less than 6gb useable space.so the question is, how can i determine whether my fone is 16gb or 8gb even that i already had rooted it and i think he also put a custom rom aswell. i already search it and shows that some other nexus users getting the same problem or error as mine.btw im at kitkat 4.4 update

Only way I know to make sure is to format the data partition.. Can do this in custom recovery or fastboot OEM lock/unlock...warning you will lose all data, so backup.
Sometimes 16GB GB n4's get formatted incorrectly when upgrading os.
16GB should have @12GB free space and 8GB ones @5.7GB.

Ill try that one..that 5.7gb shows only in total internal memory and not the free space.and i notice also that theres alot of junks that when i did restore it thru recovery they were still there thats why they keep on eating up my space so i just did manually deleted form their folder using file manager..

When you boot into the bootloader using volume down+power you'll find a couple of informations at the bottom. One line tells you whether its the 8 or 16gb model.
Also some files on your storage (eg backups from recovery) may lead to faulty numbers in the storage section of the phones settings.

No. Software and hardware is the same, they just differ in the capacity of the storage.
Remember that your 8gb get reduced by the space needed for the system. 8gb doesn't mean you have 8gb free for usage. It means you have 8gb minus the OS, cache partitions, data partition. About 5gb should remain for generic storage such as pictures, music, video etc if I'm not mistaken.

Heres what i found..got some screenies with what my bootloader is..anyone can explain what do i have here..im sorry from being noob..i know how to root and put some other custom rom but for this,i dont have any idea..i ask my friend how he rooted this and ask him every details he did but he dont even know how was that, maybe some friend of friends actually do it.im planning reverting back my nexus to stock rom/bootlaoder and like everything good as new..i dont feel the real nexus 4 here and got alot of problems too thats why..

Its hard to tell what the problem is. Did you do anything before the phone got stuck on the bootlogo?
In any case, if you're getting a used phone from someone else you're always better of wiping it completely and setting it up from scratch.

Lol damn dude you formatted everything? You really need to read the stickied posts. They are prerequisite reading.
Anyway, your first screen shot says 8GB.
When you format everything (I assume you formatted each partition), you lose everything stored on it. Everything. The OS is gone.
But all you have to do is install a factory ROM from adb or something similar. Let me go do a quick search and I'll be back.
Also, know that this isn't the phone or OS's fault. You went rogue and started doing stuff you didn't understand the consequences of. It happens, but it's nothing that can't be fixed.
EDIT: Here you go. Read through this guide. I can't reiterate this enough: read carefully and read to understand. This isn't literature class. You need to know what every sentence is telling you to do.
Basic summary: download 4.4.1 ROM for Nexus 4 and make damn sure you download the one for the Nexus 4 (mako). Install Android SDK. Boot into recovery. Specifics on these steps are located in that article. You will need to follow the link on how to sideload. Don't worry if you don't know what these words mean. The link is love. The link is life. It's written such that a young child could do it without assistance from an adult.

This is definitely assigning fault to the wrong party. Root isn't why you reformatted your storage and lost everything. It's because you didn't use Google to search for any of these answers. You could have solved your original problem by simply searching "How to tell nexus 4 8GB or 16GB."
It's possible that the internal storage was improperly formatted during a ROM flash, but it wasn't. I still can't understand what the hell your original post says, but I'm pretty sure you just misinterpreted how much space would be free.
The solution to this is to FIRST acquire the ROM you want and know where it's located in your phone's storage. THEN format the offending partitions or flash a zip or whatever you need to do to fix the problem (I don't know specifics since I've not needed it, but I'm sure I could find it with Google). THEN you flash your 4.4.1 ROM and if you go, never to return.
So in case you run into any problems with your car, I highly recommend against trying to fix it yourself. It doesn't sound like you'd be very successful. If you do, you'll probably end up with a hunk of scrap metal or a far more expensive repair job.

For those people asking what i did was, i use adb flashing tool and required .img file for nexus 4 kitkat 4.4 and voila..anyhows i use this thread the complete guide flashing stock rom and if u want there is also root option tutorials here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312 ..thanks efrant from that wonderful step by step guide..

I'm also a bit confused on what Nexus 4 variant I have. In AnTuTu, I have the following info:
Storage-Internal SD Card; 5503.5/5803.1 MB (5.37/5.66 GB)
In Fastboot Mode, I have the following info:
Product Name- MAKO
Variant- MAKO 16GB
I've tried different "fixes" and my internal storage always ends up with 5.67GBs. So, what am I to believe my phone should have?

I heard there's a bug in nexus kikat update about shrinking storage issues.u better stick to what fastboot details has. U may want to try do a data format and clearing cache to resolve the issue.

ps:dont look anntut
just go to the apps tab in config. it will show used-free (space)
