Best Apps & Video Player for Xperia Play: Supporting MKV with srt /ssa subs '720p'
I'am an huge fan of Japanese anime and i do prefer watching my movies and series in their native language with subs. Yesterday i was checking the market for the Holy grail and after 4 hours i finally found the solution.
So after installing and checked every player in the market i finally found the only player that can play BD Rip 720p (1280x720) with subs (srt & ssa) function with hardware acceleration.
I tested all the Free and priced application and i can tell for sure that many of those one don't play MKV and need optimization and work on hardware acceleration:
RockPlayer (pro) 1.7.2 : Laggy, don't load subtitles, glitch/pixelation/macroblock depending on the video.
No support for hardware acceleration for Xperia Play use software mode to play the video.
Good Menu and options
Move to SD
Vplayer 0.9.4 (unlocker): Buggy, laggy, don't load subtitles inside MKV incremented, glitch/pixelation/macroblock depending on the video.
No support for hardware acceleration for Xperia Play use software mode to play the video.
Move to SD
Best video Player : Might be the same as above with a different name Not tested...
VLC direct pro: Streaming load movies and video from computer...
Forget about it...
VitalPlayer 1.2.7 (Pro): Play fine with little lag in software mode, don't load subtitles inside MKV. (UTF 8 not supported ?) glitch/pixelation/macroblock depending on the video.
No support for hardware acceleration for Xperia Play use software mode to play the video.
Good option and menu but ugly interface
Move to SD
MvideoPlayer 2.8.2 : This app is weird cause it says that it DOES ONLY PLAY WHAT YOUR PHONE ALREADY SUPPORTS... but to tell you the truth what the purpose of a player if it plays what you have already.
Don't load any MKV on Xperia Play
No support for hardware acceleration for Xperia Play use software mode to play the video.
Good interface.
Move to SD
QQplayer 1.0.152: One of the best player i tested using Software acceleration - in fact this player can play everything i tried with some little lag at starts but really the subtitles are working with some errors on opening in Anime but everything works fine when you are watching the episode.
Many usefull option and simple interface.
No support for hardware acceleration for Xperia Play use software mode to play the video.
Move to SD (really small size)
ArcMedia 1.5 (pro): What! No app2SD! Big! Don't waste my time ! Not tested
MoboPlayer v1.2.145 Free; This player is awesome, great interface can play everything smoothly, Move to SD small size in internal, Thumb support, Ultra great option that permit almost everything. Support Hardware Acceleration for Xperia Play ! No Lag, Subtitle working greatly (multi sub track works) Opening in anime show all the subtitles : lyrics/translation/japanese
1080p: Laggy
Play every Format and accept stream
Best of the Best

And, gotta give you thanks for the heads up on mobo player.
I've been converting all my video files for use with mVideoPlayer. Just tested mobo player with a couple of files (mp4, mkv, wmv & 'video clip'), works a treat, you've saved me a lot of time there.
just what i was looking for, thank for the time spent m8

I was lucky and found Mobo Player in a few minutes. Didn't realise people didn't know about it or i woulda made a mobo player thread ages ago.
Here's a tip for Mobo Player -
If a video file doesn't play, switch to software mode and it will work.
I havn't come across an.avi file that hasn't worked perfectly on my Xperia Play with Mobo Player yet.
It is indeed awesome
cant say I've gotten around to watchning videos on the device apart from BBC iPlayer or YouTube but I'll definitely give it a shot. You never know when you need a video player
Thanks dude I do lots of road trips and this will be perfect, especially since rockplayer doesn't work for me

I don't really have a Play, but seeing Arc and Play are pmuch the same thing - Arc Media Pro is hands down the best media player, MoboPlayer lags when you compare the two
Weird...I tried to play a 720p episode of flight of the conchords...no audio.
Next, 720p episode of South Park...audio, but no video..then force close, leaving my cpu pegged at 100% with no visible process to end. Must Reboot.
well..terrible time with it so far..dunno why it hates me
speedyink i have both mobo and QQ installed i don't have any problem playing my anime episode 720p. but i had an incompatibility once on an episode and used QQ to play it. You should have at least two installed to do the comparison on some files.

True that. Totally prefer in original language. (Although the occasional ParodyDub is fun). As a US person though, besides FanSubs, I also make use of a service called "CrunchyRoll" which has an android app. I suggest US folks try it out. I know it is also available in several other places (minus Japan) and lots of current series are simulcast (well within an hour of broadcast in Japan, and with subtitles) for subscribers and available otherwise after 1 week.
Try Diceplayer 1.3.0
Diceplay finally support Xperia Arc.
Diceplayer can play 720p High + DTS + MKV files with HW Video Acceleration.
ssa/srt/smi external sub + mkv embedded subs

Cifs.co does not work for me. I get a null pointer error when I try to connect to a share.
Trying to figure out how to stream content from my desktop using PS3 Media Server (DLNA Service) to my Kindle Fire running CM9. I have found a couple of apps which will browse the DNLA content from my desktop, but they require a video player to hand off to. I have used a few video players and can't seem to get any them to work, they sit there acting like they're loading content but nothing happens in a few minutes.
Anyone have any suggestions on a setup that would work?

What I do, and it works perfect for me, is that I use two programs. Skifta and MX player. Skifta is what delivers the media, and MX player plays it. You can even use skifta to play your media if you are on another network. They are both free in Google play. If you are looking for a dlna program that would let you download your media from your server, then I would use bubbleupnp.

My Nexus 7 will be here tomorrow but I am disappointed there is no HDMI output like I saw in early photos. I use the port on my Acer to watch movies and view pictures on my TV while traveling. Does Google have any alternate way to do this even using DNLA? I can't find any information on it.
There is not. No HDMI or MHL.
Just, curious as I'm not a developer or programmer, but how hard would it be to make an app to make the N7 dlna or whatever so that we can at least stream to say a ps3 or xbox to watch content on a tv with it?
Possibly the mysterious 4 pin dock connector might be able to do this some day?

I've already posted this a few times..
You can pick up an htc medialinkHD.
Go to the play store and search "medialink" Install an app called Wi-Fi Media by Cavium.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...51bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5iaWFub3IuYW1zY2F2aXVtIl0.
When you open the app, you can choose music or video that's stored on the device.
Then choose the medialink HD as the renderer.
This will not clone the display, you won't be able to play games with it or anything. But it will stream videos or music to the tv wirelessly.

Or wait for VLC to update their app on the Play Store. Works perfectly for music, video, and pictures. Basically it's an Airplay-type functionality that works with any computer running VLC. For those of us that have a PC plugged into the TV it's an awesome tool. I can play any media on the device directly on the TV at full resolution, control how it all plays, and even maximize the display. If they update the VLC app for JellyBean I'd be in love!

Yes, that works to. There are other apps that would work with a ps3 or xbox as well.
The only reason I say to use a medialink is because it's portable. If you're traveling on business it's a little hard to tote around a HTPC, or a ps3 to use in your hotel room. But something that's the size of a business card, and about a half inch thick.. No problem.
But, is there no way for this to be worked into a kernel at any point in the future?
I know they figured it out with Team Win's app for the Evo 4G a long while ago...

I have 3 kids and when we travel I use pbo core media box with a 500gb drive along with 2 headrest monitors in the car. The core is about the size of two sandwiches and is very light. Besides carrying a whole library of stuff it can connect to any TV and play any format. It supports upnp as well so with a small router everyone can stream to the device wirelessly.
I used to use a tablet and convert videos,etc...no more of that. I find cloud services, plex, splash top, etc...more an enough for 99% of my tablet viewing.

so wait...how did Google output the nexus 7 on the big screen at their I/O conference? surely there must be a way...
There's an app called aVia that enables dlna on the nexus 7. Presumably u can have the ps3/Xbox scan for it & stream content. Haven't used the app for that purpose but I know enabling dlna is an option in the settings. I can try & report back if anyone's interested

It has been speculated that the units Google demo'd were modified units to allow for the screen mirroring. In one of the other threads on the HDMI/MHL subject someone posted a link to an article that had pictures of a Nexus 7 with an HDMI port on the bottom left side.
Edit to add: Here is the picture, from The Verge.

I was able to get it to see the N7 as a media server but I don't have movies on it yet. Let me know if you are able to stream. Like I said, I don't really use it for this purpose because I have Plex on my WHS2011 box, but could be cool when traveling to family/friend's houses that have either.

Just curious but is anyone able to stream from the Nexus7 with a USB Flash Drive plugged in and navigable to a ps3 or other device?
Hi All,
I realise there is already a huge thread about the MK809II but I wanted to focus specifically on streaming media to it as I had hoped this would be its main use for me.
The first thing I installed was the iPlayer app. I have been quite disappointed with this as the streaming quality is very poor despite setting the app to use the highest quality available and my TV only being 720p to start. The iPlayer website generally works well when using firefox with the Desktop By Default add on. When available I can play the HD streams without any problem and even SD streams are better quality than the app.
4oD was my second installation. This has frustrated me even more. By default this will not play to HDMI out. My MK809II came rooted so I was able to hide the HDMI out from the app as described (I would've posted a link but I'm not allowed! Its easily found by googling). Now the app allows me to start playing a show but sits continually on a black screen with a buffering icon. I have tried instead to download a show, although there aren't many available, this does seem to download a significant proportion of the show but I always get the message 'Download failed'. Over the last couple of days despite not watching anything the app has downloaded over 2Gb of data! I have read that it will also fail to work if the device is rooted, I haven't had a specific warning about this but again tried another app to hide the fact that its rooted and restarted 4oD but the same black screen appears.
So I thought I could get round this by using the web site as I had with iPlayer, this allows me to log in ad browse around but I encounter the same black screen and buffering icon.
I haven't attempted SkyGO yet, I'm not feeling confident of getting anywhere with that if I can get 4oD to work! Nor have I tried ITV or Channel5.
For myself and others as anyone got a setup that works better than this or used other streaming services? Maybe decent quality out the iPlayer app - or anything out of 4oD?
Wanted to start with saying that i've been using Ouya from all my retro needs from 6 months now, the main use for the ouya has been the Xbmc support but i occasionally play FPse, MUPEN and GSNES. I was even brave enough to try the gamestick for a week before returning it to gamestop and using the credit to purchase addiontional Ouya. Recently purchased a mojo and was really looking forward to finding out if the ps1 games would run quicker, if xbmc would run smoother when im jumping around a movie looking for favorite scenes (i use 1080p DTS files that are 10GB+ not those low bitrate YIFY files) and thought it would be awesome if i could finally connect more than one ps3 controller and even an Xbox 360 controller. A huge downfall and prehaps a dealbreaker has been the navigation soft keys that appear in most of my applications, i know this isnt completely mojos fault (i blame you google) but im really hoping they release 4.4 kitkat real soon which adds immersive mode and hides the navigation soft keys when a game or movie thats using full screen. its extremely annoying that the navigation soft keys appear when im trying to watch a 1080p movie using XBMC v13 beta1/beta2, i even went as far as to install the Ouya version of xbmc hoping that would work but it didnt. I found two applications that can hide the navigation soft keys like GMD AutoHide and full!screen but both require root, i will root my device once my usb a to a cable arrives but i feel its insane that i need to root my device just so i can hide some keys that shouldnt be there to begin with (seriously madcatz why did you need those keys visible when the controler had home and back keys). if the experience doesnt improve by using one of those two apps than im going to return the Mojo. Please reply if you have any suggestions that wouldnt require rooting my device to remove the navigation keys.

Thanks for the suggestion but I should have added that all my content is on a synology 1812+ so I can't simply connect it through USB. I guess I could setup a nas connection using ez file manager and have MX player play the files but that is a ridiculous way to play movies. I wanted this box to replace my living room ouya but so far its looking like this box is going back to Amazon.
Rooted the mojo makes the console way better. So I would definitely do that.
I also came from the ouya and honestly would have stuck with it if wasn't for the fact of no play store. I like the mojo since it's basically android and can customize it it to my liking.
Anyway I would highly recommend rooting the mojo and using the play store mod. Then use that app to hide what you want and enjoy just how better the mojo is.

It's odd that xbmc doesn't have a setting for making movies full screen. The Netflix app, Hulu+ app, and quite a few others I use regularly occupy the entire screen during play back.
