[Q] Stock Nexus 4 bad install of 4.3 OTA - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I tried searching for this but came up empty. I have a completely stock Nexus 4, received the OTA push for 4.3. Phone has never been rooted. After going through the install process it showed the android on it's back with a red triangle and said error. After a restart the phone just sits at the Google screen!!! I'm I boned or is there a fix for this? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Not sure what mode I entered, Held vlm down + power. Says Fastboot Mode in red with a big green Start at the top. Options it gives me is Start, restart bootloader, recovery mode, and power off. If I try to enter Recovery mode it says no command. Don't see anything that allows me to reinstall

Ok, found out on the no command screen I can hold power and hit vlm up and it brings me to system recovery with these options. Reboot system, apply update from ADB, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition.
Not sure what to do sadly

Try following step:
1. Press Vol up and down and powerbutton same time to get to the fastboot mode as you mention.
2. Choice Recovery Mode and press power button. If you got luck you will see an android guy with red mark on the screen.
3. Press Vol Up and Power button same time for while don't let go it will pop up a list of option clean the cache and do factory reset, then reboot system.
If this method not working. Then hard method is flash your Nexus 4 with fastboot. Search the forum there few people already post how to flash 4.3 ROM with fastboot

Well, first try, couldn't get my PC to recognize fastboot in adb. Was getting frustrated beyond hell and had to walk away for a bit. Came back about an hour later and for some reason it finally recognized it... Back to the start screen like when I first bought the phone. So far working ok, except for being able to log into my google account... 2-step verification giving me issues now lol. Thank you again for your assistance. Very much appreciated!!:good::good:

I had a similar experience (kind of). I had issues side-loading 4.2.2 -> 4.3 on my N4. After it finished update and rebooted I got a black screen and nothing more. I ran through it and tried to update to 4.3 again, and then it worked.
Even though it worked I've been noticing issues with it. For example, I now can no longer uninstall anything. When I attempt to uninstall any app, the phone reboots. I'm backing up now with Titanium and am about to flash. I was hoping there would be a quick fix here, but such is life. Viva la impatience.

I have same problem my stock 4.2.2 stuck x boot load , did vol up+dwn +power now stuck in "Download Mode" do not unplug the device until the process is complete .

This is what I eventually followed to get mine working. I just did scenario 2 and that worked perfectly for me, so far no issues, just having to get things back to where I had them before. The second link is actually more detailed. Just make sure you follow step by step. I guess i could have not done step D10 but wanted to make sure this route worked for me. Thank you again for those who pointed me in the right direction

I have the exact same problem but not sure how to get my PC to recognize fastboot in adb mode...

FYI if you flash to stock android 4.3 and you have the 16 GB Nexus 4, make sure that after you re-flash you have the full 16 GB and not 8 GB (unless you want to re-setup your phone twice like me). If you get this problem you can wipe cache and data from recovery and voila, all of your free space is back.

If this is what I think it is, I was having the same problem. If I went into Control Panel on my PC and it would say that the driver is failing to load. To fix this I uninstalled the driver, rebooted, reinstalled Google USB Driver from the Android SDK Manager, restarted, and all was well after that.
I really have no explanation for why this fixed it, or it didn't work before, because other than fastboot, everything was working flawlessly with getting my phone to communicate with my PC.

Please help! Nexus 10 stuck on google X during failed root :(

Hey guys
I tried the one-click root toolkit for mac from android rootz.
Something apparently has gone wrong during the root and I got some error messages and it didn't proceed. Next thing I know the nexus is stuck on google X logo and that's it. It won't load. I tried to recover through the recovery mode a couple of times but now I get the red warning sign when I go into recovery mode. This is only the second day I've had the nexus for. I feel like crying. Please Help
When the red sign appears press the volup down buttons and power button randomly until you get into recovery then factory reset
My 7 and 10 both did that. Just hold power until it turns off, then boot a recovery, wipe everything except system and reboot. It'll come up ok.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk HD
I'm having the same issue. However, the recovery I have installed is the non-functional CWM. So I can't factory reset. (I managed to once before CWM bombed, but it didn't change anything.)
I've tried several options via the toolkit. After fighting with the app all day it's finally wound up just saying it can't find adb? (I have a growing dislike for this app and have since uninstalled it.) Adb is right where it belongs and seems to run fine from cmd.
I also can't seem to flash anything via fastboot for some reason. The device throws "failinvaild id command" and fastboot immediately crashes on my laptop.
I managed to get it unlocked. However, I'm unable to flash anything to straighten it out...
Any help would be great.

Thanks for the info. My situation wasn't quite the same as my CWM was the real issue, which wouldn't run long enough to allow for the factory reset boot-loop solution. Kept at it and managed to get CWM to finish the individual formats/resets one at a time.
With a now bootable device, I'm off to replace the recovery... Thanks again.

Stuck on google logo

Hey guys
i just wiped all my data and tried to reboot my nexus, but now it's been stuck on the google logo for ages...
trying to flash to stock + unroot with nexus toolkit doesn't work, any way to unbrick it?
please help...
do you have fastboot driver installed?
Step 1: Power down your Nexus 4 (hold the power button until it shuts off) before rebooting into fastboot mode. You can do this by holding down the the Volume Down and Power buttons simultaneously.
Step 2: Connect your device to your computer. Open up a terminal or command prompt, and navigate to the folder containing the fastboot program.
Step 3: Type fastboot devices into the command line, and you should then see your device’s ID, which means fastboot is setup correctly.
now go back to Nexus 4 toolkit. Flash back to stock.

Damn it scared me even more then the red light issue that happened to me last month.

not booting after flashing something or modding something is the easiest of all to fix, just reflash the rom(gapps and kernel too if need be), no need to wipe anything. since i test all the trinity kernels before any get released, and pre-kernels, i get many that dont boot my device or bootloop(among some other funky behaviors), reflashing a good kernel always works
I left my phone for a few minutes, and when I picked it up it was bootlooped again, and i had to use fastboot again. What should I do now? Maybe a factory reset would help me. I don't want more unexpected bootloops. :/

Try another rom. You might have downloaded corrupted zips. Also, make sure you flash the things you need first. Eg, flash rom and gapps. Don't restore anything if you're using titanium backup. Try restarting the phone, see if it gets into a bootloop. If it doesn't, then try restoring apps from TB. (if you use TB.)
Hi!
I´ve got a big problem. Today i flashed the new PA version, but it seems that the download had some issue. I could install it but after a while, I wanted to reboot the phone and it got stuck at the Google logo. I can only access fastboot mode and recovery.
So the problem is, i made a full wipe, so i have no rom on the sdcard anymore. Also I am now able to enable the debbuging mode. I tried every toolkit i couzld find, but everyone needs debugging mode enabled. windows doesnt recognize the phone ( it says unkown device). So i tried to install the adb drivers, but nothing happens.
i wanted to try to push a rom with adb on the phone but it says no device found. i am such a noob, i hope some can help me.
thx

OTA Bootloop Help

I have a Verizon LG G2 I tried to flash my backed up stock recovery with Flashify so I could flash the most recent OTA. After accepting the OTA update my phone restarted, tried to install the update, hung at a black screen but was still turned on. If I power it off and back on it shows the LG logo, some white text, then goes to the same black screen. What appears to be happening is that my backup recovery did not restore properly and it's hanging when it tries to go into recovery. It's almost like my recovery partition is blank.
I've tried to follow the instructions to flash back to stock, but I do not believe I'm actually able to get my phone into download mode. When it is plugged into my windows 7 computer with the LG drivers installed it shows up in device manager as QHSUSB_BULK.
Is there any way for me to push a stock recovery, or even a custom recovery to my phone so I can somehow salvage it, or am I permanently bricked?

Ive looked through a lot too. and its crazy how that would happen i made sure it was rebooting correctly before i took the ota and then when i did the ota bam! only screens i can get to come up are the hardware key control mode and the factory hard reset which both go to white screens after I do them both. every one else probably has not taken the ota.

One difference in what mine is doing and what your phone is doing. I go to a solid black screen not a white screen. It's very hard to tell my phone is even turned on. I'm having to look if the back-light to verify if it's on or not. I can hold my power button for 10 seconds through one LG logo cycle and then it turns off.

I hope someone helps us out. I really cant afford a new one because the warranty is void. I was going back to stock because of all of the little bugs that need to be ironed out in roms. cause kit kat is around the corner hopefully and my problem virtually is the same i might have had my brightness on auto or something prior to that.

Ignore all the message, unplug you phone get ready to type the command, plug it in and immediately press enter to run the command. it took some trial and error, and i had to use this other post to help me out. I actually got fastboot working first, then used this post to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2477595 to get download mode working, and to flash twrp recovery. After that i used this post to run the command line from with twrp. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451696 . I didn't have to flash the factory tot to my phone, but i have that option now because download mode is working. This process will work, there is hope for you getting your phone back. I'm fully recovered. I decided 12B is not worth it in the mean time, but if you want 12B you need to flash the factory tot and then upgrade. There is a way to root 12B, but as of this time you are unable to get Custom Recovery on it.

HEY! I'm on the d801 as well and I've been where you're at a number of times, unfortunately. But I've always gotten out. Here's the conclusion I've reached. Trying to flash directly back to stock without wiping all the partitions first is what makes the RDTool get stuck. It's like the phone runs out of memory and can't host a full Gig+ of data since your last ROM is in the way. Sorry if I'm wrong but I'm only assuming you didn't wipe everything except the Internal storage. The good thing every time this has happened to me is that your recovery partition should be intact. Mine always is, and we're on the same variant. Another thing, booting back into recovery is not impossible. It's all in the timing it takes from the first time you see the LG logo while holding volume - and the power button, but don't let go. What worked for me was to let the phone cycle between off and boot power states twice until the phone is completely off again. You may even notice the LED indicator flash red. Release your keys if the phone stays off and immediately hold the combo down again until the phone tries to boot again just don't let go of the buttons. Once it powers down again, leave the phone alone for a few minutes. Come back and this time get ready to boot into recovery. The combo button press will initiate boot but don't let go until the next time you see the LG logo flash, then quickly release and depress the vol down power up combo and hold. May take a minute longer than usual but the reset menu should pop up thereafter. Tap power 2 more times and you should back into recovery. It's worked every time for me. Let me know if you're good and whether this helped!
Good Luck,

K, now if you're only seeing the blue dots when you attach by USB your phone to PC, then you're not fully in DL mode to process the kdz. You should see a white wheel in the center of the screen when you connect and a viewing mirror near the base of your phone with ROOTED in red directly below that. And you're sure your PC is detecting your phone? You've the drivers installed? Because when RDT tells you to run the tool, you'll see some binary code in the viewing window I spoke of, the white wheel will turn and below it will be shown the COM port to which you're connected and a solid thin red bar will begin to fill a space in the viewer showing you the progress.
Also, be sure when attempting the first steps I gave you to boot into recovery that you are not USB connected. It won't work.
And, try to remember if your phone was well enough charged, should have been at least 80% full. It happened to me once that I couldn't boot recovery and my phone would go to fastboot like yours until I left it alone to charge and then I repeated the stepsvi laid out to get back into recovery. This part is paramount!
Please READ CAREFULLY

BEFORE I connected the phone to the computer. I opened the LG Mobile support tool clicked (Options on the top right).
When the dropped down opened, I clicked the (Upgrade Recovery) option. THEN, is when the prompt opened to ask me what my IMEI is.
Before I entered my IMEI, I connected my phone to the computer in download mode, then proceeded to enter my IMEI and hit OK.
This is when the LG Mobile Support tool SUCCESSFULLY downloaded the latest official LG firmware and installed it.
*** BE AWARE, with the phone connected to the PC, the prompt NEVER appeared to enter my IMEI.
*** But with the phone disconnected, the prompt came up every time. This might be the trick for some people.
*** with the IMEI prompt opened, I then connected the phone , entered the IMEI, then hit OK. BOOM HERPES....
Well I'll polish this up more later. I hope this works for every LG G2 Variant and not just the T-Mobile one (D801)

Sounds good. A full charge can make all the difference. I learnt the hard way! One or more of us will be along should you need further help.
I do hope you get this sorted! I've come back from the brink too many times to not believe you won't.

You are welcome... The first time I did it too my battery was at 28% and I panicked since I got the low battery error.
I could of sworn that my phone officially became a paper weight. My heart dropped.
I'm glad you are up and running with the rest of us!

same problem here and cant find solution ...
I had the same issue. when you press to reset button when the phone boots it should reboot and for a short time go to recovery and try to write some commands, right? if it does like mine did then what i did to fix it was boot up the phone and wait for the page saying encryption unsuccesful to popup and on the computer have the adb reboot recovery ready to go so when you press the reset button and the recovery menu pops up press enter on the computer before it goes away and it should send you to the regular recovery menu. from there you should go back to wipe and press the format data button where you have to type yes to erase everything. let me know how it went.
you will have to reflash the supersu but it should now be working like it should
Flash the latest su and your fine.

Make sure your on charging mode and you have adb debug enabled
send the adb reboot recovery command as soon as the twrp connects to the computer. as soon as you hear it connect to the computer it should work if your drivers are working.

What screen are you stuck in? Do you have adb up and running?
Same as before Encryption unsuccessful. I was able to do the trick, got into two and wiped data. Then rebooted to system and it went right back to that screen. I've tried 100 times or so to get back into twrp with no luck. I hear the computer recognize the device when it goes into twrp for 2 seconds after you click reset. Not sure if that means add is up and running or not.

Had the same problem and could not for the life of me do the adb thing. Someone here stated something that I thought I'd try: Press volume down while plugging in the phone to get into fastboot. In a command window issue "fastboot oem lock" (this will relock the boot) > Let the phone reset and you'll see the "Phone corrupt message" > Plug the phone in again to do a fastboot and issue "fastboot oem unlock" > Take the battery out let the phone boot and BAM-E WHAM success!
btw. I followed the steps here to do the whole root thing with Android . how (google "how to root the v20")
I think the "data" wipe did this and according to this site it's not a necessary step so skip it.
This option works!

I go my T-mobile LG V20 H918 on 11/23/16 and sure enough, I followed the same thread as listed above where it added the step of "data wipe" crap. I was caught in a bootloop, where phone kept bootlooping back to the "reset to factory." The other method of entering the adb command at the right time was more frustrating than anything. (I never got it to work). I spent all day yesterday trying to get this phone working. I re-read (x30) the above thread and on the first attempt it worked. I did not get the "Phone Corrupt Message," but I went ahead and entered the "fastboot oem unlock" and the F#$king phone finally reboot to the setup initial screen. It wiped everything, but having a phone working rather than a nice $800 paperweight, I wanted to kiss SkyHusky for sharing this simple method. YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!
By the way, since I am a glutton for punishment, I followed the steps to root again. After flashing the SuperUser, I rebooted to System. I was at the initial setup screen. My phone is rooted, has TWRP, and SuperUser! As soon as I got the phone working, I went back to TWRP and made a BACKUP!!!!
It is amazing that every time I f-up a phone, I can always come to XDA and get a solution. THANKS GUYS!

No problem!! Also I forgot to add I only rooted afterward and didn't try to install a ROM or anything. I would think you risk danger with some ROMs without that decryption thing turned off. So maybe in the short future there will be better fixes.
