I never ask questions like this because I pride myself on knowing everything - or at least being able to piece together an answer. But honestly, I'm tired of searching and trying to make sense out of the data. You are the smartest group of mobile device "All in One" tech types I know. If anyone thinks I am posting this is the wrong place, let me.know.
My Epic Touch 4g is on its last leg from too many experiments. I need to get a new phone tomorrow. It will be either an S4 or an HTC One.
Background info that has me assuming things that may be wrong.
My service is Boost and I've run both Boost and Sprint ROMs with identical functionality.
Boost now sells the s3 with 4gLTE support vs WIMAX. Of my sii
I can't justify leaving Boost if I can help it because I currently pay $40/month for everything including limited "unlimited" data and get great speeds service etc.
On the new phones, I believe most variants have identical hardware including radios and it is controlled by the ROM.
What I need to know...
I assume that I could at least buy the sprint variant of either and activate on Boost. Is that accurate?
Can I buy the Dev version of the HTC or the I9505 S4 and activate it or flash and activate on Boost and still get 4g. If I spend $600 on a phone, I'm not talking about with a donor phone etc. Clean ESN etc...
And finally... What do you guys and girls think about these phones? I've always been a fan of OLED. Are these reviewers on the take, or does the IPS screen really blow away the AMOLED? When I tried both, I immediately thought the LCD suffered from what I would describe as a slower response time... For example, scrolling white boxes on a dark background leaving sort of a white tail behind it... Something I don't see at all on OLED. I am primarily interested the best display and best feel of the swipe. That's all... The rest of the components I'm intimately familiar with. I would prefer the camera on the s4, but that is not as important to me as the display. And not color accuracy... But pleasing. Display display display.
I know that's a lot to ask, so I suggest you all start working on helping me right away. I will remove my pants now and monitor the pub for the flood of answers. General opinions on the phones are welcome as well. I trust you folks more than I trust anyone I've seen review the phones. Except one guy who seemed pretty cool. Ad this one other guy....no... Seriously. I trust you guys the most. And no, it wouldn't be funny to lie to me so I get a crappy phone that won't work on my continent or something. I mean it would be funny... But doing it to me would make it instantly unfunny. Thank you!

Boost will not accept sprint ESN's except for certain older android and feature phones (Examples Samsung Rant and HTC Hero). The only way to get an S4 or HTC One is to flash the phone using a donor phone, by doing this it does not matter the state of the ESN. The only donor phones to my knowledge are 3g phones, we use to be able to flash wimax radio's to a clear account but not is the same for 4g LTE. The S3 is the best phone you can get with 4g LTE at the moment.
Hope this helps

I'm pretty sure this is no longer the case with Sprint MVNOs like Boost. Earlier this year Sprint announced the "Bring Your own Sprint Device" program for MVNOs as part of their green initiative and it is supposed to apply to all Sprint devices with a clean ESN. I was hoping to find someone who has actually done it. If you are 100% certain that it's not possible as of today, please let me know. That would obviously be very important!

I have a Hero currently and would love a faster phone. The EVO is ok but too big for me. I would prefer the Incredible.
I know i can buy one for about $600 price does not matter. However I can not leave sprint. is there anyway known way to get the Incredible to work on sprint with full internet/MMS?
Just to be clear I DONT WANT THE EVO. I want the Incredible. ;-D
Please stay on topic. Im not looking for phone advice.
Thanks in advance!
No. Sprint won't add any ESNs that aren't native to their network.

getting them to register the esn is not an issue.
I would venture to say that if getting sprint to register the esn, your next task would be to flash a sprint prl.
Other than that I would imagine the phone will function with the currently available roms.
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
I would also need mms settings and internet settings and perhaps apn settings. I know nothing about how to do this yet.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Of course it is possible and not really that difficult although it does take a few hours to figure it out.
You will have to google for info and it will be scattered throughout the forums.
Good luck!
So if I copy all the NAM1 Settings with something like QPST from my hero And find a way to get them to use the new ESN/MEID Ill be golden..
I guess its time to talk to the Sprint rep.
Why can't you leave sprint? Might be cheaper to just pay the etf ($250 I think, or less depending on how far you are into it), and get the incredible at $200 on contract with VZ instead of the $600 for the incredible to put on sprint.
Welp
If you can stomach Sprint, then grab an EVO 4G and be done with it.
How I miss the days when you could use other cdma phones in vzw (not that i knew how to do it personally, but what are friends for?). Lucky you if youhave someone who will clear the esn for you. If i had connect like that at Verizon I'd totally have an EVO right now
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
I would Like to Do this also
I want to run an Incredible on sprint also... I am thinking about wiping the Incredible's ESN and replacing it with my Hero's ESN. If I accomplish this then do I also have to flash the PRI on the Incredible ?
Thanks,
Jay
I have an Incredible running flawlessly in Mexico, with Iusacell. It took me probably 5 minutes to get it running, following a Hero guide. You just have to dial ##PROGRAM and input all the changes there, the Incredible has no settings locked down.
I don't know if replacing the MEID(ESN) of the Inc is currently possible, you should check with the CDMA Workshop guys...
Has this been accomplished?
Has this been accomplished yet? I am interested in this as well. Perhaps we can get some steps? I know I don't want to get the EVO for two reasons: 1) the Incredible has an awesome form factor 2) I don't want to pay the extra $10 for 4G when I can't use it/don't need it.
This can be done, like "lamerto" I also have an incredible fully working on the Iusacell network(Mexico) and maybe the most difficult thing to do on this case is activate the meid on sprint(on Iusacell this things are easy) and maybe get the prl (in my case I can even download OTA way)
so the all the rest is a piece of cake, you have a hero, so you only have to read it with qpst, save or just copy all the parameters and then write it to the incredible (even the drivers are the same) and the only thing that is different is the meid (guessing that you're going to use the line that you have on the hero, on the dinc)
that's all this way you can have an incredible working on sprint(maybe you have to copy the mms parameters later, but that can be done even from the phone)

Just watched a demo of the MOTO Atrix dual core....wow the scrolling is horrible. Side by side with the Epic, the differences are HUGE! It's hard not to smile knowing that the EPIC still dominates even dual core offerings.
I noticed it's an ATT "4G" phone, so after going to ATT site and clicking their 4G link, it took me to a map of blue colored coverage, which oddly enough looks EXACTLY like their 3G coverage. Upon further examination, that's EXACTLY what they show you, the 3G coverage. There are but a small handful of cities that actually implement TMOs HSPA+ '4G'. Just like apple, att using their 'full of ****' marketing practices. It's really sad how much $ apple and att has made selling inferior hardware and service for twice that of which I pay for the Epic on Sprint.
I have 2 Epics, with unlimited everything (except the landline 1500min pool), and both phones plans combined is cheaper than 1 iphone with unlimited everything, except the 4GB worth of data. And that's 3G data!
Man that's so sad. I can't believe how many fools there are out there.
Samsung can't get Froyo right to save their life, but even the Eclair Epic is a better choice than the Atrix.

My friend who I have known for 8 years bought the Atrix with the Dock and everything spending $500+. Personally, I would have not invested so much in a device that is not going to easy to make custom kernel's for. Matter of fact, its a locked boot loader which means you are screwed. Even Cyanogen himself said today that he would support the device had it not been for that fact. Still, its kinda cool, but makes developing for it a lot ( LOT ) harder than it should be.
Yet they make the XOOM developer friendly. Go figure, why would they not choose this with the phone? Do we have the provider to blame? Is it what they want for their phone systems, or are we just being put to a test to see how far developers can push the envelope with the newest phones to make custom roms/kernels?

Honestly, I can not stand AT&T. They have the same pricing as Verizon, yet they're inferior (network wise) to Sprint. The only reason they had a chance in the mobile market industry is because of the iPhone (which I still prefer Android over).
Now that Verizon has iPhone, ATT will probably be bought out by another carrier, or something weird.

LOL -- ATT....did someone just defend ATTs service???
Sprint's CLEAR division has LTE in Phoenix running 100Mb down and peak 47Mb uploads.........ATT probably runs their whole network off of one of the LTE connections.
There will always be someone who lives in a dead zone. WiMax ins't there yet, but between Sprint and Verizon's networks, Phoenix couldn't be covered any better. Roms allow for forced roam, which I had on my WinMo 6.5 phone.....and could switch between networks and roam 3G if I had a Sprint issue. It made for the most robust phone I've ever seen anyone in possession of (TP2 was quad band).

Their 'enhanced' 3G is quite fast....Got over 5Mb on my sisters Samsung Tab sitting 100ft in front of the tower....2Mb up. Damn't Sprint, unlock our WiMax UPLOAD already.......bandwidth is clearly available up and down, it won't do jack to the network if they let us full duplex. I mean, it's a phone..... I couldn't imagine FB pic uploads swamping the network with just a fraction of the HD YouTube streaming

Almost all store employees are dumb at any carrier.
What counts for sprint and tmobile is that they dont disconnect your service if you dont pay wkthing 2-3 days.I can be 2 weeks late with sprint and not get charged extra and not even have a warning from sprint.
Plus on sprint and tmobile I can download 80gb of movies a month, they dont have data cap.So if you use your phone as your primary internet then tmo and sprint is only choices.
I just wish I dint leave tmobile for sprint because speed was way faster on tmobile, and my promised sprint's 4g never came.

The atrix is a far more powerful device, but the first true dual cores will be powered by omap4 and perhaps 3rd Gen snapdragons or tegra3's. That's when it all really begins.
I'm not sure if this is good or bad.
http://www.businessinsider.com/att-buys-t-mobile-2011-3
On one side I think it's great because it'll allow AT&T to better compete with Verizon and hopefully bring down prices. Right now Verizon has a huge hold on customers because of their fantastic coverage, but after this move AT&T won't be too far behind- maybe even a little ahead.
On the other side it's lowering the number of big players, so it's possible AT&T and Verizon with both decide to jack up their rates together instead of better competing for prices.
No offense but look around for the other 15+ topics about this.
Sent from my Incredible with the XDA Premium App.
I jumped ship at the right time. I couldn't be happier with the service. Never a dropped call, fast consistent data. Att was charging me the same price for what Verizon is and Verizon simply just offers more. I was with att for six years and finally had it. When I called they didn't even want to keep me. I think this is going to push some long time customers on both sides to leave and find a different provider.

Its good and bad.
The Bad:
ATT monopoly has just grown even bigger than it was before.
(from experience) With each take over it does, service quality gets worse
Higher prices on little service
The Good:
More towers
Now has a wider spectrum (frequency 1700 & 2100)
Now tmobile and att devices will truly be interchangeable.
I was going to move to tmoble on the 15th of may when att cuts my service due to me being on the legacy (mmode) network. That sux cause now they are one in the same. Thats BS and Verizon sux in my area as well as Sprint. The two best were... believe it or not Att and T-mobile.
That exact topic is why im typing this from a droid x kb on my dinc. I hate at&t. I hate what they do to thier customers, i especially hate the fact they raped what little sanity the gsm market had in it. T mobile. Once i heard about the buyout i called one of my buddies at verizon and he set me up. Its not all bad. Im on verizon now. No at&t for me.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
To be fair, this is all speculation at this point. It will be quite some time before we find out if AT&T will even be allowed to acquire T-mobile.
Its not speculation, att world never come out with this news if it was not a pretty sure deal. Yes, they do have some hurdles to jump, but I can guarantee att has been talking to various government regulators for quite some time so none of this is a surprise to anyone but us who are on the outside. Unfortunately for tmo customers like me I'll be dealing with the horrible customer service, limited internet, and higher prices that att has to offer in a few months

That would be one hell of a monopoly.
I think its good and bad. The bad now people have only one really ****ty service provider to choose from. The good maybe at&t will realize we need to fix some **** and might actually be something that others can say hey at&t is good. Now that verizon has the iphone at&t has only one edge and thats the atrix. However i guarantee you it wont be long until htc releases an atrix like product on big red.

Exactly why I won't use CDMA. I enjoy having a much broader range of potential devices--especially unbranded devices. And if my phone breaks or I brick it out of momentary stupidity, I can quickly swap it for one of the other phones I have.
What's funny to me about this is they 1900 people will be relocated. I call bs on that. All they will do is have them far away to fire them. The center here (where I used to work) had 700 employee's about 2 years ago. Since the announcement of the AT&T buyout they started firing everyone they could. The same center now has about 200 employees or less. If they're struggling for $$ so bad why aside a bunch of money to pay the executives. T-mobile executives have screwed thousands of employees. I was lucky enough to find a better job before most of this started but I've had a lot of friends to just come in one morning and for no reason walk right back out. The unemployment office here doesn't ask any questions anymore once you say you worked for T-Mobile. They know they're firing everyone. Awful situation if you ask me.

You should look at this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDxJoGv3FLA&feature=channel
And tell me they are the next best choice. If I have have to use it as a phone for data, I pick up my SGS 2 GT9100 on AT&T. If I don't care about if works or not I use my razr for the bit faster data speeds.)
Ok. Most of the team's and members in this community or on xda either know me or have least seen my name. Whether that is my perception or a fact I am hoping you understand the spirit behind this post.
Foe the past 2 years I have either used a vzw gnex or vzw gs3. I loved the support that the gnex had and the almost google experiance of the galaxy nexus.
One thing I always noticed was the amount of roms that the gsm community had over gnex. It became understood that while many devs and teams tried support both only a hand full or two kept with it. the ones that did were very generous and I am grateful f or all your work and time!!!?
So when i was consideringmy next phone it seemed that a gsm phone would be the way to go to get access to the most devs talent.
So I told vzw to go skip!!!$$$$&&:;;;
Now I broke my contract, paid the fee and signed up with tmobile. Now I have this beast of a phone and the first half dozen aosp roms are built but for verizon not a gsm variant,
I am shocked how the switch happened and fast. I am not complaining just wanted to see the community way in on this. Obviously the development is picking up and might balance out. I also am aware that vzw variant came out earlier in US, however over seas gsm g2's have been out for just as long or longer than vzw.
So please give me your thoughts,
Thanks again to all tje devs and teams no matter if u are currently supporting our not!!!!!
Sent from my LG-D801 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I had the VZW GNex for almost 2 years and had it unlocked and rooted on day 1. I can't speak to the number of GSM ROMs available, but there was certainly no shortage of development for the LTE variant. I had 4.3 on it 6 months ago. The G2 just got that yesterday...
Just my opinion, but the root-head needs to consider WAY more than past developer support when deciding on a new device. Device popularity fuels development. Like it or not, VZW phones tend to sway the market pretty heavily. The VZW variant of a given device is bound to be one of the most numerous on the planet. Add to that the fact that the previous VZW Nexus devices started falling off contract last month and you have all those people looking to move forward...and likely intending to stay with VZW.
Last I read, The Nexus 5 wasn't likely to be seen any time soom on VZW...but the big brother (the G2) is already out. That puts the VZW G2 in the bulls eye for hot development.
IMHO...
Thanks for your opinion!

The Toro was probably the most dev supported phone I've ever owned.
Verizon is huge it only figures a great device would get beat dev support.
The worst part about your switch is the substandard network you're now on.
Toro support was good but compared to gsm thread not even close. The network coverage here is better for my home and work. At work 3g sometimes with vzw or nada. Which kills battery. T-Mobile 4g all day, so there is no universal better, that depends on your location. So i had the best network with no data at work all day.

Verizon is huge it only figures a great device would get beat dev support.
The worst part about your switch is the substandard network you're now on.

You mean substandard for where you work/live/play, right? I don't think you'd be dumb enough to suggest that T-Mobile is substandard for everyone, right? Right? I mean, I have 3 lines, unlimited everything, with 30Mbps LTE everywhere that I work/live/play, and I pay 140 dollars a month. I always have service, I always have data, and I don't drop phonecalls. Is that considered substandard to you?
Let me give you a pro tip, that you should follow at all times. Network service is location dependent. I completely understand the need to justify paying 250 dollars for 3 phones with limited data, etc, on VZW by saying at least the network is great, but lets face it. The vast, vast majority of people don't wander too far from home that often. The vast majority of people are not traveling the countryside from coast to coast all year long, and they don't give a rat's behind that bumstick Idaho has LTE coverage on the VZW map. I used to think I needed VZW, I'm glad I broke the spell that they hold over their customers about how every other network is garbage, because it's simply not true.
